This is a good, solid, 3.5 star roast beef sandwich joint. I came here because 1. I live in Beverly and 2. People magazine said it was the best sandwich in Massachusetts. FALSE. It's the best ROAST BEEF sandwich in Beverly, maybe Bev/Salem. But it is NOT the best sandwich in Massachusetts, let alone north shore, shit, not even Beverly. With the advent of Flip the Bird and their chicken sandwiches, there isn't a better sandwich of any style in town. Although, I'll give honorable mention to the grilled shwarma wraps at Back East. Also, the tortas (Mexican pressed "panini" style sammies for you newbies) at La Victoria Taqueria are much better than the simple roast beef sandwiches at Nick's. And if you want a more traditional "American" sandwich, I can think of like 5 in Boston alone that are much better than Nick's. Kind of bland not much flavor to much mayo, maybe the house sauce would have been a better choice. Onion rings were made pretty fresh also not very flavorful. Clean place staff is working hard at this place lots of traffic in this place so something here must be good. You just can't get roast beef like this anywhere else! A regional delight! Did a large beef with sauce and mayo, with horseradish on the side. Phenomenal. Soft, pillowy bun; beef cooked just right and piled on nicely; and good ratio of sauce and toppings to sandwich. And that creamy horseradish? Near perfection. Did an order of fries, too but next time I'd skip on those. Brother got super beef three way on onion roll with tomato and horseradish plus side of mozzarella sticks. The mozz sticks (which he happily shared) were the real mvp to the meal-- very, very good. At the end of the day, you really can't go wrong. Placed a phone order and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. If you don't know you now have to wait in line to pickup take out orders. Waited in line for another 10 minutes to find out that my order plus 6 other phone orders were still hand written on the counter and not even given to the kitchen staff yet. They apologized and started to "ring" my order in but they couldn't even read the hand written phone order so I told them what I ordered again. 5 minutes later my sandwich comes out and sits on the counter, they forgot about the rest of the order and 10 minutes later the rest of the order comes out. They apologized but let me leave with a soggy mess of a sandwich 45 minutes later. Nick's really needs to get with the times, who still does takeout orders over the phone and hand writes them down? There have been plenty of restaurants that have nailed the takeout experience during Covid with the help of online apps, Nick's is not one of them. read more

I heard good things about this roast beef place through the years but never ventured out of my way to get here until today ... This is a small roast beef establishment not too far off of Rt. 128 in Beverly. While parking has alot to be desired, the menu was more than adequate for a roast beef establishment. One of the things that I liked was that they offer a "roast beef plate". This included fries, onion rings a large roast beef sandwich and a salad. The roast beef sandwich had a toasted bun - a good start. They loaded the plate with shoestring fries and included a reasonable amount of onion rings. All of these things were much appreciated! The shoe string fries had a nice crisp taste - I usually like thicker cut fries but they must clean their oil frequently because as I got to the end, I really craved more. The onion rings also were crisp but I probably wouldn't order them separately if I had to do it based on this being just okay. The salad seemed to be there to make you feel better about getting some greens or veggies while you pigged out on roast beef and fried food :) The roast beef sandwich itself was okay - while good in texture and thickness, there wasn't a true beefy and savory taste. I intentionally asked for the horseradish, bbq sauce and mayo to be on the side so I could taste the naked roast beef. I then put the condiments on. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad but it also wasn't so good that I would drive to Beverly just to grab a roast beef sandwich from this establishment. The staff was very nice and the place was clean. Everyone has there preference - just like some people like Greek Pizzerias and others like Italian Pizzerias. I personally like Harrison's Roast Beef over Nick's Roast Beef. I understand! I mean, this is the best freshly sliced roast beef I've ever tasted. So tender and rare, it melts in your mouth. The Boston area has more than its share of roast beef sandwich places. The rest of country should be so lucky. That the best of them is in North Beverly is truly a mystery.
