4.5* I love this neighborhood pizza place, the sourdough crust is really nice and the pizzas are very filling without being too greasy or heavy. The toppings are always good quality and I like the bi-weekly changing, creative menu. My only criticism is that their slices are totally randomly sized, sometime you get lucky and get larger slices, sometimes you get tiny ones. I wish they cut their pizzas so that the slices are more similar in size. I guess to avoid that, I should just buy whole pizzas in the future :) Staff is very friendly and always up for giving good recommendations. read more

Nick's saved the day yesterday. After playing softball for hours, we were ravenous and ready to consume any kind of pizza, no standards as long as it was edible. Fortunately we had an ounce of energy left to spend a minute researching nearby locations and happened upon Nick's. I called them up and ordered 3 pies and they were ready within 20 minutes on a Sunday night. The prices were reasonable, the sourdough crust was excellent - chewy in a good way and not at all bland - and they even had large cookies, 4 for $7. These tided us over while we waited a few minutes for the pizzas to be ready. One might be skeptical, thinking that any pizza will warrant high praise from the hungry. This is a fair point, but my third, most cognizant slice was just as good, if not better, than the first. The initial cookies had also provided me with enough glucose to retain some level of thoughtfulness and consideration while eating the first couple slices. And out of ~8 people with fairly discerning pizza palates, there were no complaints. I'll certainly be back to order more 'zahs and try their sourdough bread when I'm in the area. read more

I don't often give 5 stars, but they deserved it. My first time ordering from them. We got the combo. A perfect pizza. Well developed crispy thin crust (I tend to be a thick crust guy) and delicious toppings. I have nothing negative to say except that, guys, a bialy is a type of bagel. I asked my husband to get a couple of bagels if they had anything I like, and he was told it wasn't a bagel...yes it is. Well, next time for sure. Oakland has a ton of great bake shops and pizzas, so another great spot has to stand out. Nick's does that. Their sourdough pizza is great (all their baked goods are good) but their onion tart pizza is something I could eat multiple times a week. That moody with bad personality on top of being sick with the flu girl working counter will negatively impact this business. If you are so sick that your customer interaction is grumpy and you are coughing everywhere and then touching my pizza you should not be working. Honestly I should have just canceled my order from what I experienced and saw but my hunger won. The poor man before me got his pizza packed directly after she wiped snot from her nose with her bare hands.. no washing just putting snot all over his bag of pizza slices. She must of think that a customer is doing her a favor and one hopes that the owner lets her know that she's got the wrong idea. The thing is, handling cash and handling food on top of spreading the sickness should be a no no. The pizza maker behind her don't have the balls to tell her, but she should not be opening the oven and taking the pizzas out with her dirty hands. Ordered several pizza's from here for a big group. The staff was extremely friendly. I like that they change up the menu regularly and experiment with new combinations of toppings. I was able to get a couple pies with fig and goat cheese, which were a huge hit.The classic spinach and mushroom was also a favorite of mine. Their pizzas are relatively thin (which I like), but maintain a good crispiness to support the weight of some of the toppings. I am a fan of a softer crust though, but still tasty. Giving it 1 star for the crust, which is well done, however not real "sourdough", as claimed. All that said, their crust is done well, in a new york style. Rare to find around here. The pizza sauce is terrible. Low quality tomatoes and uncooked at that. In the world of pizza, the only times it is appropriate to used an uncooked tomato sauce as a base is if those tomatoes are are very high quality (think "san marzano") or if your oven is at 800 degrees. Using low quality, uncooked tomatoes is misguided and the pizza loses several points for the sauce at Nick's. To their benefit, there is very little on it to begin with. The only reason I know more about to sauce is because I asked for a side of it. Needless to say, I tried one bite and returned it (they actually charge for it). Next the toppings. Where to begin... I got the mushroom spinach pie and the spinach was spread over the entire pie's surface, with almost no detectable seasoning. What? Not even salt? The crimini mushrooms were half big pieces and half little pieces, almost all pieces only PARTIALLY COOKED!! Again, they opted for what I can only assume is the lazy route, and put unseasoned, uncooked mushrooms on a pizza. Not only are uncooked mushrooms not very easily digestible, they don't taste good either. If you want good quality pizza made with quality ingredients in the area, check out Lucia's Pizzaolo, PIQ, Boot and Shoe Service or Emilia's(just a few blocks from Nick's). This place is not worth its 4 stars. Go elsewhere. read more

The food is very good. Ordered ahead and it was ready right on time. Nothing like warm fresh pizza to bite into. The ingredients were well balanced to boot. It's nice to find a good pizza place for sure. Outside seating is all they have so we took it go as the weather was uncertain but that's a small price to pay for good food. I was out on a neighborhood stroll with my 8 week old son and my dog when hunger pangs started to kick in. I left the house without my wallet, but saw that I had stashed some cash inside the stroller caddy. I figured I had just enough to get a slice and a salad around the corner at Nicks. I tied the dog up outside and wheeled in my stroller. As I'm ordering, I realize that I may be a few cents short. I am, in fact, $0.51 short of the total. The cashier looks over to the manager (who I believe is Nick himself) and the manager gives a look that signals NO DEAL. I ask if I can Venmo or use Apple Pay (because of course I have my phone and not my wallet). Nope. I ask if I can give my credit card number without the actual card. Nope. After some time, the manager comes around the counter and says that I need to bring the difference back later, and tells the cashier to make out an IOU. An IOU. For $0.51. From a woman towing an 8 week old baby and a 50 lb dog. Now you might be asking, why not just get either the slice or the salad since you didn't have the funds for both? That's a legit question. The answer is, dammit, I need both! I've been in the house all day long with this (awesome) kid and this (also awesome) dog, and I wasn't going to go another day eating cold food or stuffing Raisin Bran down my throat as I breastfeed. As I'm walking home, slice and quinoa salad in hand, a wave of humiliation rolls over me as I think of an IOU with my name on it hanging up at my neighborhood pizza joint. So when I get home, I get in the car and drive back to Nick's to pay my debt. I am fully prepared to give them a piece of my mind, but when I walk in (tugging along the baby in the carseat), I lose it. I start to cry (like, real tears) at the fact that these people made a regular customer with a new baby come back and pay 50 cents owed for lunch. The manager (Nick?) apologizes and says he didn't realize it was such a small amount. I counter with, "What would have been an acceptable amount to make me come back?" I think he said $1. Ok. So I pay $2, tell them to keep the change, and then storm out of there. Like an old lady, I yell, "You ought to be ashamed of yourself!" And they should. I come in there often, tip at least $1 per slice, and still got treated like shit. From now on, I'm making my own damn quinoa salad (Yeah right, like I have time for that with an 8 week old). My fiance and I stopped by Nick's when we were in the Berkeley area last weekend. We ordered two slices of cheese pizza and got a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. The slices came out pretty fast and were tasty. Sourdough gives it a unique flavor and the crust is excellent. This pizza is also a pretty great deal at $2.50 (I think) a slice which is a very good value. We will come back when we are in the neighborhood when we are looking for a quick bite to eat. read more

I always come to Nick's knowing I'll get delicious, unique pizza with vegetables (and sometimes fruits!) that are obviously made with love and care. I know I'll always get consistency, knowing that my favorite ranch dipping sauce is there in the window, and that I'll be able to make my favorite drink (ice tea, lemonade, hibiscus tea). And I know I'll always see something fresh and different in the fridge, like their strawberry shortcake for example. This was the perfect treat and something I'll definitely be looking out for when I come again. This is also such a family friendly place, is consistently clean, with ample seating and really friendly and professional staff. Best of all, it is bike friendly!!! It has a casual vibe, but doesn't have that rude hipster service that I've experienced at many places in Oakland unfortunately. I can't wait to return to Nick's. I tried the Olive & Herbs, and a special of the day that had mortadella on it. They get the balance just right. For some, what goes on top is the key but for me it's the crust. The autumn salad with arugula, persimmon, pomegranate was delicious too. It's about as casual here as you can get, in a good way. When I gobble down a slice I think I'm eating a New York City slice, but then I get to the crust and savor the West Coast / Bay Area / Oakland sourdough goodness. Vegan options! Their crust is great, simple sourdough, vegan, with the right combination of chewy and crispy. Several specials that change every few days, and they offer VEGAN versions of about half. The vegan options are also about 20% CHEAPER, which is how it should be, but seemingly never is, anywhere else. Cheese is expensive, and taking it out of any given dish should be less expensive, what a novel concept! Takeout is the way to go here; there are only about 10 seats inside, and a small table outside with a couple seats. Their dough is available to buy, and it makes for delicious pizza at home. They also had a vegan dessert on the board last time I was there, chocolate mousse, but I haven't tried it. Kind of an odd location on Shattuck near Alcatraz, not much parking as it is street only, in a mixed-zoning area that is mostly residential close by. This is a great, small, locally-owned, queer-owned, vegan-inclusive pizza joint that deserves all the business they can handle. read more

Terrible. We need dairy free but got told by the disinterested indifferent counter cashier they do not make modifications to any pizza. No additions and no subtractions. Oh and no vegan cheese option. This left only one option - the vegan mushroom, spinach, garlic pizza. No they won't add pepperoni to it. It sounded ok still so we ordered it. It was terrible. Dry. Over cooked garlic. Undercooked mushrooms. Inedible really. We each managed a slice in the spirit of effort and hunger - but we abandoned the rest of the $20 pizza as a lost cause. If you enjoy one of their standard offerings with cheese and no modifications at all then you might have a different experience. But we won't be going back. Ever. read more

The owner sent me a message explaining the situation and everything added up. I can understand that a restaurant prefers customers not order through 3rd party couriers, like Postmates, as it may compromise the quality of their food. It began the usual way, deciding which pizza place to cross of my list. Let us get the bottom line out of the way, right away: Nick's is among the best pizza you will ever eat on the East Bay. I want to draw a distinction between two rivals in my mind: Blue Bird and Nick's. Why are they rivals? Earlier this year, I was crossing another East Bay pizza joint of my list and discovered the tantalizing catalyst of sourdough in pizza crust (http://www.yelp.com/biz/bluebird-pizzeria-san-leandro?hrid=DEol0H76TuINYETgqvy-FQ&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) ). Blue Bird pizza's crust led me to Nick's because I was determined to find all the pizza places that blended sourdough with pizza crust. This so-called "Oakland style" of pizza intrigued me. Anyway, Nick's pizza is a small shop in "North Oakland"/Berkeley and is very unassuming from the outside--we are talking four tables small. It opened in 2012 and from what I gather the owner was inspired by the crust at Arizmendi Bakery; however, he added his own twist. The pizza options seem to rotate based on the pizza maker's whimsy and usually span six to eight varieties (side note: I zoomed in a picture I took and saw some scribbles on a whiteboard about pizza combination brainstorms...how cool is that). I discovered that the ingredients are locally sourced, organic, and hormone free whenever possible. The pizza is standout delicious. Specifically, we got the roasted mushroom pie (mixed roasted mushrooms, asiago cheese, carmelized onions, mozzarella, and garlic-thyme oil; 24$) and more classic pepperoni pie (22$). Once the pizza arrives, you will get the idea that you are in for something amazing. There is a great char along the edge of the crust. I was taken back to New Haven and New York with this pizza. You will notice the crust tending toward the crispy side, with a lack of volume of sauce--this is very different compared to Blue Bird where you have a more chewy crust with overflowing sauce. The crispiness in Nick's crust stems from the addition of olive oil to the dough. However, Blue Bird has a stronger sourdough element in its crust. The toppings here at Nick's were pretty stellar on the pies we ordered. The pepperoni is nitrate free--impressive! Mushrooms usually aren't my favorite thing but the pizza was scrumptious, almost like a marsala-like taste. There was little greasiness, even on the pepperoni pie (Blue Bird's was a bit on the greasy side). Happily, the pizza leftovers were not oily at all and the crust held up very well--I'm guessing this has to do with the austere sauce. I admit I might have delayed the writing of this review because I selfishly wanted to keep the traffic down here at Nick's pizza. However, after discovering that the owner had an offshoot of Nick's that closed down after only seven months (i.e. Nick and Aron's in Temescal), I think the place deserves praise and recognition. It would be hard to pick a favorite between Nick's and Blue Bird because the pizzas are very different. That's OK! Options and rivalries are good for everyone, think Microsoft and Apple; BMW and Mercedes--you get the picture. I dare say, this "Oakland style" is the closest I have come to New Haven apizza outside of Connecticut; high praise indeed. read more

My bestie and I went here for work lunch cuz I needed "comforty" food. It's close to our workplace in Emeryville. The vibe is super chill. They have house music bumping but it's not too loud. Bonus! The neighborhood is relaxed too so you can find parking easily. But about the food! We ordered a classic spinach and mushroom pizza. It comes with tomato sauce, roasted garlic, and mozzarella. The crust is killer! It's a thin crust style but the dough is simultaneously chewy and crunchy and holds all the juicy toppings superbly. We didn't wait long for our pie, only about 10 of the 15 minutes they said it would take. And the staff is friendly and smiley. I'm coming back soon for sure. read more

Not as exciting as I'd hoped it be. The sourdough crust was delicious, and the options were unique. Yet here's why I knocked off 2 stars: 1) The toppings are sparse. Adding so few of each item made for a pretty bland pizza. 2) Even though each pizza is made & cooked when ordered, they don't allow for any adjustments. Even if you'd only like to omit a topping. Which would then save them money. Strange, if you ask me. There's nothing particularly bad about the pizza, but with so many other options, Nick's didn't leave me longing for more. I am amazed this place is still operating. So done with this place. I have a newborn baby and the grandma is visiting. After a long day with the baby she mentions pizza. Though I had previous bad experiences with Nick's in the past, I thought I should give them another chance. After several phone calls of no one answering the phone, I went to Grub Hub. I order a pizza with eggplant, the guy calls me 45 minutes later and says he has no eggplant, and what do I want to do. After realizing options are very limited for a vegetarian style pizza with tomato sauce (I gotta have tomato sauce), I then request a half pepperoni and half regular cheese pizza with basil, and he says, "sorry, no substitutions." I couldn't believe it. Here I am starving, already waited 45 minutes, you then tell me you can't serve what I ordered from your menu, and then you deny a simple substitution to make things right? I could understand not allowing substitutions at the onset, but you should go the extra mile for the customer if you run out of ingredients and wait so long to notify the customer. So you're pizza is not that good. It's really salty and usually burnt. I wanted to love it, but your customer service is seriously lacking. Folks, this place just doesn't have it's act together. If you want to experience excellent customer service and good pizza, I would recommend Emilia's Pizza (located just down the street from Nick's), or go to Bobby G's and get a nice microbrew to go with it. Both places have consistent quality pizza, and friendly customer service. You're nothing without your customers, and these places know this. Apparently Nick's thinks it is my privilege to eat there. Well, it's not. I see you have a good following, but you won't last if you operate this way. I should mention that I called Grub Hub, who after calling Nick's, apologized for their terrible service, and gave me $5. They stated Nick's was unapologetic and unwilling to do anything. read more

Wow what a surprise find! Me and my buddy were walking in the neighborhood and wanted something quick, and Nick's was the perfect fit. Thin-sliced potato on mozzarella cheese and pesto sauce was as good as I imagined. Mushroom and spinach was classic. The vibe was also very cool and down-to-earth. Will definitely revisit soon. I am typically a passive user of Yelp. I prefer to sit I the din our cyber community and, as I do much in real life, disappear into the wallpaper. However, Nick's pizza has so dramatically touched my soul that, for the first time, I must publicly call out to the pizza Gods and thank them for their bountiful blessings bestowed upon this man of many talents. To my cold home were delivered two warm pizzas, half an hour before expected. The delivery person smiled as she handed over the boxes with requested designs, a unicorn and an attempt at a TARDIS. Note: no points were docked for a lack of sci-fi knowledge. Inside these boxes of glory were two of the most creative pizzas I have ever feasted my senses upon. A maple glazed Brussels sprouts seductress winked at me, almost as if she could hear my mouth water. Beside her, a classy eggplant delight made me doubt my own sanity. What is Oakland-style pizza anyway? Rude style. Trust me, I wanted to like you Nick's! They would not customize a pizza to meet our dietary restrictions. We do not eat lactose, but we do eat meat. They claimed that they could not make a vegan pizza with meat or take cheese off of a meat pizza. I wanted to order an entire pie, so you lost $28 there and all the other cash I may have spent over the years had you been able to accommodate us. I drive by Nick's several times a week and never noticed it until... My Bro and I were starving after a long work day. We were having a debate about what to eat. Feeling a bit beat down by our week we had settled on ordering delivery pizza at home. At the exact same moment both my brother and I saw the Nick's Pizza sign (heavenly glow and all). We looked at one another and said "Let's go!" Apparently the foodie and parking gods had conspired to make this moment possible. We parked right outside and walked in. There is only 4 or 5 tables and some outdoor seating. The menu is very simple cheese, pepperoni and their specialty pizza (slice or whole pizza). Being new to this we ordered a slice of cheese, a slice of pepperoni, a slice of the specialty which was Heirloom Tomato and Pesto, a spinach salad, and a strawberry shortcake. The pepperoni and cheese were nothing special just regular thin pizza served on yummy sourdough crust. The specialty pizza however was amazing, the heirloom tomatoes were just perfect and the pesto was phenomenal, like give me a bowl full with some pasta phenomenal. So after comprehensive taste testing we made the decision to order a full pie of the specialty to take home. We waited for our pizza and munched on some salad and our strawberry shortcake, while jamming to some serious tunes playing on the boom box. Both were yummy but the shortcake proved to be the real crowd pleaser. Even my Bro who hates desserts loved it. I agree with my fellow yelpers Nick's is giving Cheeseboard some stiff competition. Just had the amazing goat cheese, apple, bacon pizza. I was eating a left over slice from the pie I picked up earlier while walking on 24th Street in the city.
