Gyros
Douglas H.

Great food, great prices, huge portions, crazy fast, friendly. There was so much meat on the gyro I had to eat half of it with a fork before I could pick it up.

Gyro Sandwich

Overall the food was just ok, the gyro meat is only cooked in the spit. The fries could use some salt, and if you ask for extra sauce, they charge you for the extra condiments. Not bad if you are in a hurry and want to try something not so expensive and fast. The gyro was overpowering with to many raw onions, and the tomatoes were a bit mushy.

Just love everything about this Nicky's. Gyros with the best sauce. The fries are always piping hot. Get a combo great deal. The portions are generous. Leftovers for sure . The owners and staff are very friendly. Have great memories also. Remembered our order better than we did. And we go there about maybe 5 times a year. So friendly and old school. Thank you and wish you continued success.

Had a big baby (double cheeseburger) and a polish from here, both with ketchup and grilled onions. Total came out to be around 5.50 or so. The polish was OK, but not the best I've had. It seemed a little small and not up to the same level as the polishes at Jim's original or Johnny's. The bun had poppy seeds on it, which is a plus. The big baby was a winner, though. Nice soft bun, flavorful meat. There are three booths and a counter by the window. I was in and out within four minutes. This place is not open on Sundays. If you're in the neighborhood, this place is worth stopping by, but don't go out of your way to eat here. P.S. This place has no relation to the Nicky's on 58th and Kedzie. Apparently there are a lot of "Nicky's" out there.

Beef with Sweet Peppers - Dipped

Finally got around to trying this place out. Ordered a big baby, beef with sweet peppers - dipped, gyro and 2 large fries. I had the gyro. Decent size and the meat was flavorful. Pita was a bit thinner and harder than most places. My guy had the beef and I took a bite (not a big Italian Beef fan) and thought it was too salty. He thought it was a bit salty and he likes salty food. Fries were meh! I've definitely had better. My sister had the big baby and she said nothing special this place. It was quick though. I'll come back for a quick meal if I'm in the mood.

Food is descent, but it's def no Georgies (if u grew up in lil village you will know exactly what we mean lol) place is always clean. Service is fast and workers are always pleasant. It seems there's a lot of regulars so that's a good sign. Idk but I always felt the big baby is so blah, in every Nicky's location actually and this one is no diff. Gyro is a must try , they def don't skimp on the sauce which is awesome! (Seriously if ur not a big fan of it ask for light sauce) and their fries, although thin and not much to look at, are actually good w the perfect amount of crunch! The fried mushrooms are also good and the tom toms are huge! Everything always seems fresh and they're open late so that's always a plus. Also their prices won't break the bank and portions are good. 5$ minimum to charge it.

I can see this place getting really busy, very popular. Ordered the Chicago dog, first time trying. It was amazing! Loved all the toppings. If you're really hungry order two. I asked for extra sport peppers... and they never made it into the bag. The peppers that did survive then launched itself onto the ground after my first bite, never to be seen again. A lone pepper remained. A true Chicago casualty. I ordered ahead for pickup at 12:15, and while it was ready on time, I think it had been sitting for a bit because everything was cold by the time I got back. The fries had good flavor but had sadly crossed over into soggy territory. The sauces were tasty (and generously portioned), but paying $1 each bruised my sauce-loving heart just a little. One thing that genuinely surprised me was the seating. The inside is tiny, and almost all of the seating is outdoors. It had me wondering... what exactly happens here in a Chicago January? Do we all just huddle around our hot dogs for warmth? Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, it just didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe I caught them on an off day, because I can definitely see the potential.

A LOCAL CLASSIC! I…read moreloved this spot so much I ended up coming back twice. It has that classic late night comfort food vibe and feels like one of those staple spots you have to try at least once. First night I ordered a polish hot dog with everything on it and a fish sandwich w/ extra grilled onions. Super cool that your order comes with fries and I added a cheese cup both times. In my opinion the fries were mid the first go around, but second time they were better. Definitely tasted better dipped in cheese. They were kinda airy in texture, if that makes sense. Polish hot dog was around a 6.5-7/10 for me. It did taste better warmed up the next day. What I was most obsessed with was the double cheeseburger and fish sandwich! both were easily a 10/10. Super good prices and worth the money. Also, the chile peppers were sooo bomb and hotter than I expected ! I wanted to eat them all, but they were packing some serious heat! The lemon Italian ice is where it's at, make sure to order one! You can also mix it with strawberry, but both times people recommended the lemon and now I see why. The line gets super active and busy past 10-11pm, but during the daytime it's way less crowded. Even when it gets packed the line moves pretty quick. They stay open late and close at 1am which is nice.

The smell of caramelized onions hits pretty much immediately as you approach the window. No line…read moremidday. We were served quickly and got the polish sausage that comes with fries. Both were nice and hot. Fries were crispy and that first snap into the juicy sausage was worth the trip. No seating, so be prepared to eat in your car and get a bit messy. Also be warned the peppers are legitimately spicy, those serranos had my partner sweating. Glad I tried it, but not something I'd eat all the time, great late night drinking kind of food.

It was almost 11pm (they're open until 2am on Fridays.) and there were at least a dozen other vehicles in their drive-in stalls. Ordered their specialties, a Superdawg and Whoopskidawg with Superfries, Chocolate Super Malt and Black Kows. Service was fast and friendly at 11pm on a Friday. We were eating in our rental car in apx 10 min. It was cool to eat outside on a warm July night in a classic, 1950s style drive-in. The food was excellent, flavorful and fresh. I normally avoid krinkle cut fries because they are usually frozen and mushy or mealy. Not Superfries. These fresh cut fries were practically fried mashed potatoes. We loved them! The drinks were perfect. The Black Kows is basically a root beer float and served with an extra root beer "sidecar." Our only complaints were about errors with the garnishes. We specifically said we wanted all the garnishes on both dawgs and they only gave us the standard grilled onions on the Whoopskidawg and forgot the sport peppers on the Superdawg. Otherwise we loved everything. We might go back next week (before we fly home) because I really want to try their Whoopercheesie Burger and maybe a Supersundae. (Menu Descriptions/Prices) Superdawg Not a wiener - not a frankfurter - not a red hot - but our exclusive... Superdawg™. On a poppy seed bun, we tenderly place the loveliest, juiciest creation of pure beef hot dog (no pork, no veal, no cereal, no filler), formally dressed with all the trimmings, escorted by our often imitated, but never equaled, Superfries™. Served with all the trimmings - golden mustard, tangy piccalilli, kosher dill pickle, chopped Spanish onions and a memorable hot pepper. $9.30 Whoopskidawg Our char-broiled version of a Romanian, Hungarian, Polish sausage; basted in our special sauce, and served on a Whoopskiroll™, with grilled onion and a pickle. $12.05 Superfries For extra pleasure an extra measure of Superfries™. $4.35 or $6.95 - Try 'em with cheese! Supermalts and Supershakes A full pint of smooth creamy refreshment so thick we put straws in them only to prove that you can't draw them through. (We will gladly thin them down, if you prefer them that way.) Flavors: double rich chocolate, mellow vanilla, real-fruit strawberry or pineapple. $5.80 - Regular $7.10 - Large Black Kows A beverage--a dessert--a snack. Chunks of ice cream floating in a foamy sea of root beer. You can drink it. You can eat it. You can do both at once. $6.20

The staff is famously surly, and that's clearly part of the experience, so if you know that going in it adds to the fun. It's more playful than serious and definitely gives the place its own character. I also thought it was cool how they give out free dogs after Bears wins. That kind of generosity and local spirit makes it feel like a true neighborhood staple. Definitely a memorable stop and one of those places that feels uniquely Chicago.
