This would have been an enthusiastic 4 Star review if Nicola's Pizza and Mexican Eatery had just told me they were out of avocados or used a different one. Nicola's is a small, very casual, Mexican/pizza/grinder restaurant with a few inside tables and a takeout business. It shares a building with a convenience store. I ordered sopes with pastor for workday lunch takeout. The pastor costs extra, but the sopes come topped with beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and queso fresco or a similar cheese. And avocado slices. When I got home and lifted the styrofoam takeout container out of the plastic bag, I noticed that the container was really heavy. When I opened it, I saw why. There were three pleasingly dense corn sopes that were like savory corn cakes, taking up most of the bottom of the container. They were generously stacked with toppings. When I took my first bite, I hadn't noticed the condition of the avocados yet. I did notice that the avocado tasted past prime though. Then I looked, and saw that there were discolored sections on each of the three avocado slices that topped each of the three sopes. I like to cook. I use avocados. I have cut into that avocado before. There is no mistaking the condition of that avocado after you cut it and turn it open. As soon as I see it, I throw it away. On more than one occasion, I've had to abandon plans to make guacamole because all of the avocados were like that. I get it. It stinks. But if you're a restaurant, you can't serve avocados that are discolored like that. I removed the avocado slices and powered through. Perception or reality, the sight of the avocados made me question the freshness of the rest of the vegetable toppings too. On the positive side, the corn sopes were very good. The pastor was flavorful, was properly cooked and had good moisture. If not for the avocado slices, this would have been a good meal, and I'm not surprised that people have good experiences at Nicola's. However, it's hard to forgive visibly discolored avocado slices used in a meal. There's a conscious choice that goes into serving an ingredient that is visibly past prime. That's why I've got to score this experience Two Stars. read more

Heard people love or hate this place, so we decided to give a shot. Ordered crunchy beef,chicken,steak and carnitas tacos and a medium pepperoni pizza. Surprised that tacos are sold individually and not 3 to an order. Picked up and took them home. The gang said the sauce was OK not bad, not great, the crust was like most comments said it had a frozen pizza pattern, it was serviceable. The tacos were an awesome, well proportioned, fresh ingredients and worth the trip. read more

First experience here on a Saturday afternoon between lunch and dinner- surprised by the crowd coming in for takeout at that time. Had a beef taco salad, hubby had two tacos. Loved the tomatillo salsa that came with the tacos, wished my salad had a little more seasoning but I realize you cater to the crowds. People next booth over had a pizza that looked great - that might be the next visit- there absolutely will be more ! Service was not good at all in fact the teenage girl working in the front was of like no help at all.. the only thing on the menu in store is the Mexican food side.. anything else you have to guess or as she said "go online".. so unprofessional. I just wanted a grinder and instead of saying what automatically come on it I told her what I wanted and when had a chance to look at the menu realized that exactly how I ordered it is how it comes.. she didn't ask hot or cold and when I got the sandwich it's hot.. not how I wanted it but ok.. crazy that I will NEVER go back there again even if the sandwich is good. read more

This place pretty much goes BACK, At least the burritos do. My bf and I always eat burgers and pizza so we decided to switch it up. We got the ground beef and steak burritos. The beef burrito was delicious, the meat portion was plentiful as they were not stingy. Everything fell into place. The steak burrito was even BETTER, the steak was perfectly seasoned. Perfectly cooked- so well cooked I could enjoy it with my braces. There was alot of steak which was a relief considering it was so good. The reason I give this place 4 stars is because the rice in the burrito could've have more flavor...whether it be a hint of seasoning or some lime. But the burrito was THICC but stayed together. The prices were more than fair, 9/10 I would highly recommend here The burritos come with mild (green) and spicy (red) salsa. UPDATE: Just had the tacos, the chicken and steak tacos are okay... But the beef tacos were delicious! UPDATE 2: The quesadillas are very good! The actual location doesn't really have alot of seating. Really good! I did find the chicken a little bland, so maybe don't get that, but it was nbd as their sauces are so good, it makes up for it. We also got nachos (not pictured) that were decent. We got this as takeout in May FYI. I think it's a good value for your price and they're a small business so definitely support! Will try the pizza next! read more

This place is near our home and we have ordered sporadically from here. Today we went in and intentionally ordered different things we were craving : hard a&soft shell steak tacos, honey bbq wings,cheeseburger grinder and a cheese quesadilla. All very yummy, plentiful and good timing from ordering to receiving food. Only thing I'd suggest is a cheesier but sturdy tortilla Quesadilla per my moms suggestion but she still enjoyed the three included toppings. Such a great find down the road from us! I never would have thought to check this place out if it weren't for the great yelp reviews. The first time we went here we ordered take out and the second we ordered in. Both are great and efficient options. My husband and I can say with 110% confidence that we never had a better quesadilla! Wow! Seriously it was gigantic and LOADED with cheese and chicken. We also got a side of pico de Gallo and sour cream which was a delicious addition to the entree. I wish I remembered to take a picture of it but it was gone in minutes! So good! On a previous visit we ordered a calzone and a steak burrito for my dad. The calzone was so good! But the marinara wasn't the best. I would stick towards the Mexican entrees but the pizza could be good we never tried it though. However, my dad LOVED his steak burrito. We will definitely be returning! read more

Hands down the best Mexican food in the area. I'm very particular about Mexican food, since being from Texas and CT does not have much to choose from when it comes to authentic Mexican food. Best delivery place by far in my area. I actually live within walking distance however still get the delivery, lol. I've gotten there pizza slices when I was drinking a little bit and they were pretty good so I decided to give the Mexican food a try. The pizza is actually really good - for the area really good nevertheless delivery - can't go wrong. It's thin crust, good chew good toppings pretty cheap. On to the Mexican. Hands down best Mexican in the area. I got their crunchy tacos they came fully loaded , hot , delicious. 10/10 would buy again. Got the quesadilla - 10/10 would buy again. It's not greasy or unhealthy tasting like Azteca - and on top of it all they deliver. All of their sides - salsa verde , sour cream , pico de gallo are homemade and awesome . I can't wait to order a burrito. Omg! If I could give 10 stars I would! I just ordered doordash and am really impressed ! I ordered a chicken ceasar wrap and an el pastor crunchy taco and everything was packed with flavor. What really surprised me was how amazing the crunchy taco was. Looks like they fry their own corn tortillas so the shell was thick and still super crunchy after being delivered!! Shame on me for taking so long to try this place. I live less then a 5 min walk from this amazing place. I haven't tried the pizza or the Italian section of the menu but the Mexican is fantastic. We ordered a taco salad and a steak cutlet torta sandwich... The salad was huge. Loaded with a avocado lettuce cheese and seasoned non greasy hamburger. My fav was my sandwich. Something different and new to my taste buds.... The roll was buttered and toasted and loaded with onion cheese avocado fresh cut tomato and a nice steak cutlet. The tacos were expensive without having much on them. The soft taco came with meet and something on top, not a soft taco. The burrito was okay but nothing to write home about. By far the best Mexican I have ever had. The crunchy beef tacos are incredible. Fully stuffed and an amazing crunchy shell which I think might be deep fried. This seems to be more of a take-out than sit in restaurant, though they do have a couple tables. If you are a fan of Mexican, you must give this place a shot, much better than any others in the Newington area. The Al Pastor sandwich is also great (marinated pork, avocado, cheese, peppers) on an amazing warm bread. Great fast service with great flavor. I had two slices today. I walked in at noon. It was fairly busy. There were about 6 other walkin orders placed with in 2 mins of mine. I got my slices with in 5 mins, hot and ready to go. The slices are large, thin NY style pizza. I think this is the second best slice in Newington , only second to Stretch, on Main Street. This place is my f a v o r i t e in the area. Any time someone asks me for a restaurant recommendation, this is it. My dad took me here the day before I left for a study abroad semester and I couldn't stop thinking about it for the next six months. I come here almost weekly and every time the food is delicious--I even came for valentine's day with my boyfriend. My stand-by's are the chicken empanadas, chorizo torta, and crunchy chicken tacos. A few other options I've tried are the taco salad, which has a delicious, almost sweet taco shell that works perfectly with the lettuce, avocado, meats, and other toppings, as well as the Mariachi burrito. There is another review farther down by Mickey Z. I found was quite accurate. It was FREEZING COLD IN THE PLACE! I got a Burrito and My wife got a small pizza. The food took FOREVER to arrive. Maybe 45 minutes! When it did arrive, the burrito was full of fatty white meat which tasted horrible, and the pizza had puddles of grease so large, you could see your reflection in it. When I told the waitress about the food she made several snotty remarks to me, which was stunning because I had went out of my way to be nice to her! I Will NEVER be back... Disappointing read more

Not sure why the poor reviews. They are the only place I know that does Mexican and Pizza. Prices are reasonable and the food is pretty good. The interior is clean and i've never had to wait more than 20 minutes for my food. I've had both pizza and Mexican and both were good. There is also a convenience store next door which is convenient to shop in while waiting for your food. read more
