Wow Jason Knibbs sure can execute. What an amazing meal we had at Nine Ten. We were sooo impressed by the food and service that we cant stop talking about it. We have visited most high end restaurants in town and our usual fave place is Mr A's but seriously not even Mr A's can pull this off. The appetizers,,,awe the appz were unbelieveable. We had the hamachi and the tuna tartar, for entree i had the Macril special and my hubby had the short braised ribs,,, melted in your mouth. And im not a dessert fan but the pine apple ricotta and shaved Cilantro ice dessert was incredible. I did the 3 course pairing and our server Danielle picked out some really good wines for us. She was by the way one of the best servers we've had in a long time. Turns out she's been there for 7 years working with Chef Knibbs, you can imagine she knows her stuff! More like a Five Six. I really wanted to like this place but average is the best I can say. Probably better places for breakfast in the area (The Cottage). The Chiliquiles were great but the salmon eggs Benedict was a bit fishy. The biscuits and gravy were decent. as well. The kids had a fruit plate, scrambled eggs and a cinnamon roll. Pretty hard to screw those up. So I would give the food a good but not "very good". The service was attentive but they made a few errors. Charged for a hot chocolate they didn't bring and served the biscuits and gravy 10 minutes after they served the other dishes which lead me to believe that they just didn't get the order placed. They did comp us a Mimosa. With so many other great places, probably won't be back here. read more

Came here with my boyfriend after a nice time at the museum. Food was wonderful. Chefs appetizer was spot on. Duck was very flavorful. I recommend the 3 course dinner with wine pairings for $75. Server was friendly and checked on us frequently. Overall very pleased with this place. read more

The six courses were each paired with complimentary wines by the knowledgeable, friendly, and informative sommelier Chris.. presentation was great and the selections were varied and delicious. This is a striking building in Lajolla, sit outside enjoy people watching so we decided to have a drink at the bar. The drink was very good, but the service was very slow. I think it's because the bartender night have been a waitress too but very slow. This is a Part of a hotel property and my brief encounter to get attention with the hostess gave a quick look inside which is very nice. I loved this place. You must try it when you are not concerned about how much you are dropping on one single meal. Atmosphere: your standard nice hotel restaurant. Nothing to write home about. Service: great, very attentive, and even funny... I made some stupid remark about the rhubarb on my dessert and got extremely embarrassed when the waiter overheard me. But luckily for me he didn't snob me, which I deserved, and thought it was funny too. He got a nice tip. Food: I've been trying to get all my friends that gave up on Prospect St dinning to go here. Seriously, it is great. I had the lobster risotto to start, which was perfectly cooked. Not mushy, not runny, not sticky, just well cooked and very good seasoning. I followed it with the swordfish, which was the absolute highlight of my week (I know how that sounds....). It was grilled with just the right amount of butter and served with some interesting bean foam that enhanced its flavor quite well, and some brocollini. My friend's halibut was very well cooked too, no dry and overcooked like you get at most places. Desserts: that gets its own category because I normally don't get dessert but after seeing white chocolate mousse and honey crepes I just had to order it. Fantastic! Wine: it was the middle of the week. I had a very forgettable glass of wine. I definitely recommend this place. read more

Sooo so good! We had scallops with risotto as our appetizer, Alaskan Halibut and New York steak for entrees - everything was prepared so well, it was delicious. It was cool that the restaurant gave free samples (tuna tartare and some sort of cookie dessert thing) during the dinner on the house. =) The only complaint I personally have is that I thought the tables were really really cramped together. I felt like I didn't really have any room or privacy to myself. Also, definitely dress up a bit because it IS situated in freaking downtown La Jolla - the crowd is kind of old, uppity, and ritzy... we were the youngest one there, haha. Other than that, the decor was cute, the service was decent, and the food was amazing. It's a great place for an intimate date. It's also a bit pricey but it's tooootally worth it. Sesational dinner on Sunday night to start restaurant week! Hope all of our other choices turn out this good. Service - impeccable Food - amuse bouche tuna tartar served in chilled spoons - so citrusy and bursting with flavor. Anticipation begins and we were not let down. Grilled calamari on fresh and tartly dressed mixed greens. The slivers of preserved lemons paired with the slightly tandoori tasting nuggets of octopus was a winner. The lobster ravioli was perfect. A generous size for both appetizers. For the entrees, we had the duck, rich and gamey, with al dente farro, and the scallops. Only thing is that all the little sides with the scallops leaned toward sweet. Would have been nice to have something salty in there to contrast with the sweetness from the scallops themselves. Desserts - kaffir lime panna cotta - sublime, and the hazlenut cake. Cake was delicious though I personally would have liked it warm. We had the wine pairings and enjoyed all except for the white that came with the panna cotta. It was way too sweet to go with a creamy non fruit or nut dessert. Would have been nice if sommelier could have checked preferences. All in all wonderful. Would go again. read more

We are locals with a toddler. Going out to dinner without the little one is a special occasion. Nine-ten was a special occasion that lived up in every way. The valet was easy and inexpensive, staff- friendly and welcoming the bar was fun and relaxing- he perfect way to set the tone for the evening. Our server was a real professional. She helped us make the best choices for our tastes. The food and wine pairing was truly perfect. The menu was small... a delight to choose from. Everything we ordered we loved. Love love love the crab scallop pasta! People who know me, know that I can resist pasta and breads, BUT, I could not resist this pasta! AMAZING! Each bite resulted in me passionately shutting my eyes in pure and complete enjoyment! This dish is exquisite! I know I probably paid for it in calories, but well worth it! We also enjoyed the lamb and halibut! Both also well done, but just not as breathtaking as the pasta! The service and ambiance was warm and romantic..loved this place! Sunday brunch following our Waverunner adventure... a Bloody Mary never tasted so good! The 2 of us were seated out on the back porch - a quiet, picturesque setting overlooking the ocean and one of the hotel pools. It got a little less quiet & picturesque once a family and their noisy kids found the pool, but whatever. The Bloody Mary cured a lot of ills :-) My boyfriend immediately zeroed in on the Short-rib Hash. This dish was hash on the swanky side - tender shredded short ribs in a saucy red-wine reduction mingled with cubed potatoes and roasted onion. The poached eggs on top were really well-cooked and not super-runny, which is just the way I like them. He was also able to get some melted cheddar on top that added another layer of flavor to an already flavorful dish. Getting everything in one bite was delicious! My Smoked Salmon BLT was also tasty, but definitely needed salt. The salmon didn't taste very "smoked" so I'm glad the bacon was on there. It was a great, crunchy addition to the sandwich. The 2 bucks to upgrade to truffle fries on the side were well-spent - they were nicely crispy and dusted with parmesan and herbs. The side of aioli I asked for was clearly housemade, and the whole-grain mustard mixed in was a nice touch. Every bit of that aioli got mopped up by both fries *and* sandwich! Service was up and down (the cocktail menu doesn't list brunch cocktails; it took some time to get a coffee refill and I was never asked if I wanted another cocktail; we had 2 different servers *plus* the waterboy) so the review is really only 3 stars. But the setting deserves its own star so I'm rounding up. Would love to come back for happy hour at sunset! read more

Food was good. Not bad, not great. The biggest complete was with the check. I have a restaurant "passport" card that gets you discounts at certain restaurants. When I got the bill I gave them my passport card and my credit card. When I got the check back to sign I noticed the total had barely changed. I looked at the check and they did remove the cost of one of the entries BUT then added a $19 service charge, so it almost negated any savings. It seemed like a pretty bs thing to do. I still tip based off the original price, and to add a service fee AFTER they give you a discount is pointless. Don't give the discount in the first place. read more

This is one of the top restaurants in San Diego. They have a real chef with really fantastic food that is perfectly executed. They also have a Sommelier to help with wine pairings. Also the wines are very well chosen and you can select a $20-30 bottle and it will be great. Their fish is fantastic and the chef always has something interesting to try gratis between courses. Last time we were there we had a lobster bisque that was pretty amazing. Service is perfect, but for the price it should be. They also have a bar where you can order from the same kitchen for a lot less, but still have the quality. read more

I came here with my wife for the 4 course Valentine's Dinner. The staff was outstanding and the food was unbelievable! The waiter made excellent suggestions for the wine pairings. I had the tuna tartar (just melted in my mouth), lobster (wow!), lamb (mmmm) and the chocolate bomb. All the sauces went extremely well with the courses. This was a stop on our San Diego Burger Tour. OMG the hamburger was amazing! I know it was expensive but it was so worth it! It was perfectly cooked, extremely juicy and had a great aioli sauce that complemented the meal. It was served with a pickled cucumber, carrot, and onion. I despise pickles! If they touch my bread I am dissatisfied, but I ate these and I loved them! I chose the truffle fries and my husband chose the organic salad. Salad was just a salad and tasted as it should and the fries were good. I'd get the salad the second time around because the burger was really big and filling. The burgers we $14 plus $2 for cheese, and an extra $2 for truffle fries. We'll definitely be back. I cannot wait to try some of the other menu items. read more

Impeccable service: check! Original dishes: check! Great atsmophere: check! Nine-Ten is a fantastic restaurant! I've been here twice - once for restaurant week and another for breakfast. Both times were very memorable as far as dishes were concerned. The prices are typical of La Jolla but the quality of the food and the variety makes the price worth it. Dinner Highlight: Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly! Lots of other reviewers rave about this dish and for good reason. The pork belly just melts in your mouth, it's so tender. The thin layer of gelatin that covers the pork belly provides some added flavor and a little spicy jolt. Definitely a must try! They also have a huge selection of wines and the staff is super helpful when you ask for a good pairing. Breakfast Highlight: Salmon Benedict When I see the word salmon, my mouth automatically starts to salivate. I LOVE salmon so I when I saw this on the menu I had to try it. The dish was well portioned, the quality of the salmon was great and while other restaurants put too much hollandaise sauce, the amount of sauce was just right. While the food is definitely the high point of this restaurant, I must comment on the service. I was extremely impressed by the service here, especially on my last visit. I came here on a Sunday morning with a group of 15. We had placed a reservation a few days before but when we checked in with the hostess, she did not have our reservation. Great, I thought, so much for breakfast here! I was ready to recommend to my group that we go somewhere else because I thought there'd be no way they could accommodate us without us having to wait forever. Have you ever been around 15 hungry women?? It's not a pretty sight. However, after the hostess spoke with the manager, they actually offered us a private room! While we waited for them to prepare the room, we were offered complimentary coffee and before we knew it we were sitting at our table. With a group of 15, I am sometimes hesitant to ask for separate checks but when we did, the waitress was more than willing to provide separate checks and didn't come off inconvenienced at all. The bf and I came here for the first time. We each had the 3-course menu. For appetizers we had hamachi sashimi and jamaican jerk pork belly and they were amazing! Bf loves his beef short ribs entree! I had swordfish and it was cooked very well. All the dishes had great flavors! Very seldom do I give a 5=star review and this place truly deserved it. We opted for their 3-course menu so that we could have more control over what to order and we're glad we did. The Hamachi and Pork Belly appetizers were spot-on. Perfect combination of texture and flavors. I ordered their scallops - 3 big perfectly-cooked orbs were delivered to me. There's so many things going on that dish - and this in a good way: a picked what I think was slivers of caulifower (I may be wrong) that added the perfect acidity; some toasted grains that added texture and many more. My friend ordered the black cod and this was heavenly (we shared). I can come back to this restaurant just for this. My other friend's braised beef was so flavorful and melt-in-you-mouth tender. We of course had their half-baked chocolate cake - this was also good but somehow this didn't hit me the way our entrees did. We had the 5 course chef's choice menu. My wife had the paired wine and I opted for a whiskey based cocktail and some beers with my meal. EVERYTHING was awesome! Some of my favorites were the Hamachi, duck, halibut, lamb, New York steak. I can't wait to return. Walked in on Christmas morning for breakfast and the first thing one of the waiters at reception says is "wow its crazy today with all the people coming" not a very welcoming comment to hear first up. Visited Nine-Ten on 9-10-2015 and had excellent food and service again. We visited during a special extended hours Happy Hours time and since we just wanted a light meal we ate in the bar area. Director of Food and Beverage and Sommelier Summer Haines noticed we were short one chair and arranged for one to be brought to us. She then made sure our orders were placed as it was very crowded in the bar. We had the house red and white wines which were excellent, in particular the white which was a blend of 3 grape varieties. Rhonda had the appetizer Lamb meatballs with a pine-nut/mellow tomato sauce, with toast. Very nicely done. I had the Short Rib Panini appetizer with Truffle fries. Took my sister to breakfast at Nine-Ten before I took her to the airport. I had the eggs benedict here once before and thought the hollandaise was outstanding. This time the sauce was really good but not as good as the first time, when I recall there was a little kick to it. The service was good albeit a little slow even though there were only a few tables occupied. We ate indoors because it was cold outside, but the front patio is nice when it's warm and the back patio has a very nice ocean view. read more

I usually seem to be anti-establishment. I tend to either not eat at the same place I stay, or am more critical of that eating establishment. That being said (and true) Nine-Ten was delightful. Fresh ingredients, most locally sourced, well prepared and great service. A nice but not overwhelming drink menu and good variety of deserts to top it all off. Price was on par for the area.
