Nippon Cha is a zen oasis in a sea of sports bars and drinking spots along Bell Blvd. Yes, Japanese cuisine existed on Bell for a while mainly in the form of sushi spots (such as my long time fav, Mickey's Place), but there is something that feels different, perhaps elevated, about THIS restaurant on THIS stretch in Queens. The menu is vast, so it leads me to believe they can't get everything perfect (they don't), but of the things I tried the good far outshines the mediocre. The Takoyaki, are crisp, fried balls with a creamy center with tender octopus pieces inside. They were covered with a large mound of bonito flakes. I really enjoyed this opening snack. Popcorn chicken was as crisp outside and tender inside as you would expect - well done with good flavor. I did not try the Yuzu Tebasaki (Japanese fried chicken wings in yuzu and lemon sauce), but it sounds and looks amazing - next time! For my main meal I went with the Unatama Set - Eel with boiled egg in tentsuyu sauce. Served with salad, miso soup, rice, egg custard and pumpkin. I truly enjoyed this since it felt very brunch like with the savory sweet egg and eel served in a little cast iron pan was fantastic with the sticky rice. The simple green salad had a well balanced dressing, not your typical cloying carrot/ginger crap seen in most japanese/sushi spots. The pumpkin was served cold with ginger pieces. The egg custard was perfectly silky smooth, with mushroom and shrimp buried inside. The miso soup was the only miss - it tasted a bit bland or off somehow. The entire set was a nice compliment of flavors and textures that left me truly satisfied. Took me a while to come here, but whenever I heard the Nippon Cha name it was always in the same sentence with ramen, which is what nearly all of the rest of my party of 8 had in one form or another. All seemed satisfied with their choices, but since they are Yelpers I am sure you will hear it directly from them. I had Matcha Yuzu Lemonade, which was very refreshing, but as expected the citrus obliterates any matcha flavor you may be expecting. Their free house tea is excellent. Service is also excellent and friendly! Don't sleep on the Black Label Donut popup (usually Sundays) that is sold in a little closet, which feels a bit like an explicit drug deal - those donuts will make you feel great and get you high! I have been to Nippon Cha a few times and it has been decent every time! My favorite things here are hands down, the drinks! Matcha Yuzu Lemonade is BOMB here! Tochucha Yuzu Lemonade and Matcha Lattes are good too. For the food, I had the Spicy Tuna Donburi which is tochucha rice with spicy tuna, avocado, and soft-boiled egg. Finally getting around to reviewing this place. So I've been hearing about this place for awhile and was excited to finally give it a shot. We were greeted and seated very quickly. The menu had a good amount of choices and I was excited to see all their speciality drink options. We ended up getting a ramen bowl and the tuna donburi. I wanted to get more food but unfortunately we got full fairly quickly. They had some awesome drink options and we got one of the yuzu and the matcha, i definitely liked the yuzu drink more - tart and refreshing. I also had to get a dessert. The matcha tirimisu was handmade by the chef, who came out and actually spent some time teaching me about the process for making it. I definitely appreciated and welcomed the time and effort he took to do that. Overall I definitely enjoyed my time eating here. It was a very pleasant experience. This updated review is long overdue. Since the last time I wrote my first review till now, Nippon Cha has changed a lot! I would have to say the thing that improved the most is the customer service. Two years ago, things were spotty and inconsistent. But now, once you come in, you get a warm, friendly greeting, and throughout your stay, tea and water refills are consistent and service is improved a lot overall. Quality of food has improved as well! Their ramen is hands down, some of the best in Queens! You have your choice of the regular ramen noodles or there's now the new tea noodles. There's a few soup bases to choose from; my favorite is the tochucha tea soup base. Regardless of soup base, it's never oily and the flavor is just right. And best of all, their ramen noodles are made in house! Portion size is generous as well. When you stop by, be sure to get their Matcha Yuzu Lemonade! It's amazingly refreshing, with just a hint of matcha and will leave you wanting another one! I believe there's also an alcoholic version of that too..with sake or soju..lol (But don't quote me on that). Some of my favorite appetizers are the yuzu fried chicken, the takoyaki and the grilled squid. You can't go wrong with any of them. Been here twice so far and the food is overall pretty good and you can tell they use quality ingredients. The first time, I got the Uni Ikura over chilled tochucha ramen noodles and it tasted great and refreshing, perfect on a hot day! There is not a lot of uni in it, but ikura was plentiful and I still felt like I got my money's worth. Everything went well together! My boyfriend enjoyed his tempura soba set a lot. My second visit, I opted for their spicy tuna don. Personally for me, everything on this dish was a little too creamy and heavy together with nothing to combat the heaviness. The runny egg yolk, with the large pieces of avocado and the creamy tuna made it difficult to finish and I kind of wish there was a little acidity in the rice, or some texture in the dish to distract from that. I ordered their food on 11/6/23 via DoorDash delivery and it was disappointing and expensive. The oyakodon chicken and egg didn't have much flavor or sauce. It was mostly rice. This was the same for the ribeye donburi which was said to be popular. The ribeye was overcooked so it was hard to eat. It had so much rice. It was a boring dish. The rice had a weird, moist texture for both dishes. I felt it was not worth the value. The spicy miso ramen didn't have much depth, flavor, or umami. This is a review of their takeout/delivery service. I ordered their pork miso ramen noodle soup and iced matcha latte with soy milk. Delivery service was quick and despite having my meal sit unattended for an hour, the contents were still warm to touch and the latte cold. To me, this is a testament to how fast and fresh the food is prepared and sent out. The dry items were separated from the miso soup, iced latte outside the package. After nuking the miso soup and pouring it in, I went to town. The soup was tasty, the meat was tender, the vegetables were crunchy and the egg was perfectly boiled. The three O's....overrated, overhyped, overpriced. Started off with their fry baby octopus that was delicious but for $8 I probably wouldn't order it again. Then, they brought out our ramen, tochucha and negi ramen both with the tea noodles. The tochucha soup base was not my type of soup. Yes it was different and unique but I preferred the negi ramen. The texture of the tea noodles were good. Lastly, they were backed up so our drinks came last. Matcha latte and tochucha cappuccino. The matcha wasn't whipped perfectly so I had to constantly stir the lumps of green tea powder to let r dissolve. I came here a total of 2 times, my first experience was pleasant and the ramen was great. However, the octopus balls were hot on the outside and frozen and cold on the inside. That really killed the experience the first time, but with pretty decent ramen, I ignored the bad experience with the frozen octopus balls. My mother in law found hair in her ramen and I found hair in my extra ramen. That is just nasty. Who appeared to be the boss did offer 20% off as an apology, but 20%???? Shouldn't you just not charge for the disgusting ramen? They were really apologetic and did give us 2 free desserts as an apology, which did taste good. But the fact that there was hair in the food, not just once but twice. There was hair on 2 different orders! This was during a slow time of the day also, there was only 2 other tables. For them to have hair in 2 separate orders makes me worried and question their quality of their ramen and cleanliness. The ramen tasted good, but finding hair on 2 separate orders was unacceptable. Very cute outdoor seating during COVID. The staff were all very friendly and let us sit down to wait even though we were just getting take-out. My friends ordered a hot Matcha latte and a cold Matcha Yuzu Lemonade. The matcha latte is butter itself so you can adjust sugar based on how much you want to add. We liked the matcha yuzu lemonade although it was pretty sour. My Matcha Latte Float was also not very sweet. Even with the ice cream melted in, it was very matcha-y and milky. Nothing really stood out as a "wow a must order again", among the 4 dishes I ordered. The ramen was solid but the soup lacked depth. The Tochucha porridge was not porridge at all but served with super dry, what seemed like, day old rice with soup hastily ladled on top of it. Although I have to say the seafood in the dish was abundant and fresh. The curry sauce for the katsu curry was very thin and watery. Had the choice of noodles or rice to be served with the Uni Ikura bowl and opted for their signature noodle which were cooked perfectly. This place specializes in that extra healthy grade Matcha that is so good for you. One of those bookmarks that I always wanted to get to (will we all ever get to visit all of our bookmarks? Time will tell!). Located on busy Bell Blvd, but Google makes you approach east of Bell which is great to avoid traffic. Municipal parking east of Bell. Beautiful decor, and polite and helpful waitresses here. The temperature outside was dropping quickly so no alcohol, just delicious brown tea. The Takoyaki and grilled octopus were delicious appetizers. Everyone ordered Ramen. Most soup bases are pork, one or two chicken, and one tea based for my vegan friends out there. Edit Nov 2023- Unfortunately I'll have to severely downgrade my rating. Reasons: ordered broiled eel over rice -the scales were not cleaned properly (almost choked on the scales). Same with the broiled salmon over rice (not scaled\cleaned properly) and the eel and egg over rice (separate dish from the first). I understand everyone has off days but after paying over $120 for the whole order and having to discard it because of the problems I just couldn't just leave it like that. A real shame too because the food was amazing originally and one of the best in the area. Came here to celebrate my best friend's birthday!! We arrived at around 1pm for lunch on a Sunday and even though it was a full house, we didn't have to wait long for a table for 2. Being a restaurant that's decorated entirely with wood, I can see how they're trying to emulate restaurants in Japan and create a zen environment. However, their intention is foiled by the fact that it's a small and popular restaurant so instead of eating in a tranquil setting, you're literally going to be inches away from the tables next to you and overhearing all of their conversations. It took a while for the servers to notice us and take our order, completely understandable on such a busy day, but after that, service was impeccable and they came by on several occasions to check up on us and to refill our waters. In terms of the food, we started off with the Japanese fried chicken (tatsuta age) and the Japanese fried chicken wings in yuzu sauce. Both were excellent appetizers! I would say I liked the wings in yuzu sauce more mainly because of the citrusy yuzu sauce. Making a mental note to myself to buy a bottle the next time I go grocery shopping. I also got the tonkatsu ramen with their signature tochucha noodles. I didn't find their tonkatsu broth to be as flavorful as those I've had at other ramen shops in the city but the texture of their tochucha noodles was on point. Pork belly was good. Aside from the crowdedness and noise level, which again is due to their popularity and small space, I pretty much enjoyed everything else about this restaurant. If we had went during an off-time, I'm sure the dining experience would've been perfection. I've been coming here & ordering delivery for many years (since they opened!). Ordered food via DoorDash as I do a couple of times a week from here. I got the ribeye don & I always request for it to be well done. Not only was it not well done, it looked like they took leftovers from a few other plays & threw it into the bowl. There was double the amount of meat (cooked 3 different ways- burnt, medium & almost rare). There was also double the amount of rice. A few of the pieces looked so gross- very fatty pieces that look like they sat there too long (it was solid white- not the typical whiteish jelly looking fat). We went on a Saturday around 7:30 pm during pandemic time while only outdoor dining was allowed. 2 blocks of Bell blvd were blocked for traffic during weekends. I love how extensive the menu is, this makes me want to come back to try something else. I got the tori kara miso chicken ($14) with tonchucha tea noodles (additional $1). The tea noodles didnt make a difference because the broth overwhelmed the subtle tea flavor of the noodles, so I would suggest not getting the special noodles unless you're having the bowl with the tea broth. The chicken cha shu was also interesting, as I've normally had pork cha shu. Although it was tender, I dont think I'll have this dish again. Pretty solid Japanese option deeper in Queens. I haven't really found anything else comparable to the tea houses in Manhattan. The atmosphere is relatively calm and the restaurant is well put together. I've come here a few times, in the afternoon and evening, and never had any issues with seating. However, if you're coming here by car, it can be difficult finding parking closeby on or around Bell Boulevard depending on the time of day. Overall, I've had a pleasant experience, after trying both the ramen and teas. The Takoyaki was a tasty starter and definitely better than many other takoyakis I've tried elsewhere. I usually opt for the Chicken Shio ramen and I'm glad that the broth is not overly salty! Portion sizes aren't the largest (yay for portion control), but I've always left feeling satisfied to full. I've had the Iced and Hot Matcha Lattes with soy milk (happy to see dairy-free alternatives). The hot latte was quite strong, but the cold latte was slightly diluted probably due ice. This place is bomb! My cousins who live in Bayside come here often, and they insisted that we try this place. We came in a large group and ordered a bunch of desserts and drinks. I got the yuzu lemonade with the check-in offer, and even though it was just a free drink, I was blown away. It was so good and the yuzu taste so strong that I might make the trek to Bayside just for it. The Nippon Cha parfait which contains several scoops of ice cream, jelly, mochi, and red bean, was really good. The tochucha ice cream is a real standout. The tea taste in all their ice creams is really strong, which is what I look for in a tea flavored ice cream. I often forget how much I love tea. I'm not talking about Lipton here (or any other mass bagged junk). I used to take the time to purchase, steep, get the correct temperature and brew all of my loose leaf tea in the proper vestibule. It's a delicate art, and time slows down to accommodate it. We came for Ramen, but the tea at Nippon Cha stood out to me. My old friends, sencha, genmaicha, hojicha and, of course, matcha were gleaming at me on the menu. The staff procures iced varietals of them all, creating the drinks perfectly with attention to detail. Who knew genmaicha can taste and toasty and flavorful iced (as opposed to hot)? Nippon Cha knew. They know a lot more about fine tea then I do, but are eager to share the deets and sell you a bag to take home. Now that I have you thinking of toasty tea, let's get back to the Ramen. On the last page of their extensive menu you'll find cute photos of all the dishes. There was variety: Pork/Chicken broths, miso broths, tea noodles custom made for the shop... etc. The chicken ramen (a seasonal special?) was everything you could hope for, except the chicken pieces themselves.. which were slimy and rubbery. Eurgh, I could only endure one and a half (of 2!). Noodles, broth, etc were all wonderful and savory. I also dipped my spoon into the tonkotsu ramen and found a great creamy broth as well without any saltiness. In comparison, Instant ramen tastes like poverty and desperation (or just plain laziness) compared to the warm, hearty bowls of noodles you'll find here. Servers were a tad wishy-washy but was polite and got the job done. I am on a personal mission to both explore Asian food more, and try all the restaurants on Bell Blvd. There's so much variety that it can be intimidating sometimes to try a new Asian spot, but I am glad I tried this spot. They start by serving you tea or water. Then you order off the menu which can be found by scanning a QR code at the table. Lately I've been trying to eat more seafood. The seafood options were limited here but what I did try was really good. I ordered the Seafood Yaki Soba and my friend ordered a chicken ramen. We shared french fries. The food is absolutely incredible as well as the atmosphere but please be prepared to give a HEFTY tip to avoid an attitude from the servers. I cannot say the same for all the service staff, but the one I had today had a particularly bad attitude when she realized that I couldn't tip any higher than what I offered, even going as far to question me about it. I would have absolutely given a much greater tip if it was in my budget, but unfortunately it was not. Please consider eating there, the food is top notch, but keep the tipping in mind! read more

We visited here when they first opened last year. The menu back them was limited, but tasty. We decided to stop by today since it was chilly and needed some ramen to help warm up. There was a wait, but were seated right away because we didn't mind sitting at the bar. Don't let the wait deter you. Service is fast and you get seated fairly quickly. The first thing we noticed was how much the menu grew! There is a ton of choices. I really liked the fact that you can also customize your ramen. We were offered tea and were impressed by how tasty it is. We're not familiar with tochucha tea, but they use it extensively throughout their menu. We decided to share the spicy tuna donburi for appetizer and then got a tonkatsu don, shoyu ramen, tochucha ramen, and nigi ramen. We liked sitting at the bar because we got to watch our server, Justin, make drinks and desserts. The spicy tuna donburi was so delicious. The rice is their special tochucha rice which is rice steeped with tochucha tea. It gave the dish a nice earthiness. The spicy tuna was quite spicy, but the runny egg and avocado cooled it down. The nice surprise was that they added yuzu. It added a nice brightness. I didn't get to try the tonkatsu don, shoyu ramen, or nigi ramen but all looked yummy and were good sizes. The tonkatsu don and spicy tuna donburi came with miso soup. At first, they brought out a tochucha ramen with tofu. Our waiter, Justin, realized the mistake and quickly switched the order. He also insisted that he give us some yuzu lemonade on the house since I had to wait a few minutes. The lemonade and tochucha ramen were both amazing. The lemonade is so refreshing and a great combination of tart and sweet. The ramen was so delicious. I'm a big critic when it comes to ramen noodles. I'm happy to say that the tochucha noodles were a perfect texture. They had a bite, but chewy. The tochucha also added a great flavor to the broth. The pork was also perfectly seasoned and tender. The only complaint I would have is that the broth was on the tad salty side and not hot enough. But I would definitely order this again! For dessert, we tried the matcha and tochucha (I told you there was a lot of it on the menu!) ice cream. Both were a great finish to the meal, but the tochucha was really good. It was an upgraded green tea ice cream. We were so happy with our meal, especially since Justin was such an awesome waiter. We can't wait to come back now that it's ramen weather! read more
