My go to dessert store is Menchie's and when I saw that they were closed, I decided to give Nirvanaah which is just across the street a try to satisfy my sugar craving. I remember trying them in the mall from a long time ago since when they have closed that location. I like Indian ice cream because they are extra creamy. You go to Nirvanaah not to try their regular flavored ice cream but to try their Indian flavors. They have a wide variety of them including many that I have never seen before. I got to try falooda, butterscotch and settled on the gajar halwa (carrot) which was very good. Ok so you go in and ask for the best kulfi falooda and the guy there says he is the best at them. You go hum let's see and the guy true to his word makes a great falooda. I have been to this place before and the falooda is good but not great well last Sunday was awesome. The young man told us about his half moon bay party the night before while making it. I had such high expectations with this place and I am beyond disappointed. My friends, colleagues and neighbours have been raving about Nirvanaah since forever. Finally on a Sunday afternoon I went to give it a try. Certain things that turned me off were the weird smell when you walk in and everything looks so shabby and unhygienic It's a ice cream place it should be cute, nicely decorated or at least well maintained. But Nirvanaah was a mess. The men behind the counter were looking so no interested in entertaining the customers. I tried two of there ice creams - Casata - I am a fan on casata and I was really disappointed. The flavours were off, the cake at the bottom was soggy and didn't tasted fresh. Meetha Pan - It was ok, good for one time try. Overall, I don't think I will come back to this place again. Nothing about this place impressed me. Based on the ice cream labels (on notebook and other papers)-- with handwriting that is different on each and all really faded looking, the cups of half melted ice cream sitting in the freezers, the broken freezers, possible(?) splats of ice cream on the wall, and breaking down freezer (one piece had come unhinged), and stale air in the shop, this is one place you'll want to avoid. I can't comment on how authentic the flavors were, but the Alphonso mango I had was decently tasty They had several unique flavors like rose (I tried it, it wasn't too floral), saffron pistachio (maybe I'm not accustomed the taste, but it was sort of plastic-y to me), and blue mango. So many unique flavors and the best way to to beat the heat! You can really taste the fresh ingredients in their flavors, even in the weird ones like Chikoo flavor! The server was also super nice as I shamelessly sampled 4 flavors. By far, blue mango was the best! So unique and just the right hint of mango lassi flavor, yum! My husband and I fell in love with Falooda milkshakes in Texas several years back and haven't been able to find them anywhere else. We were so excited to try out Nirvanaah because we were told they had them. They had lots of delicious unconventional ice cream flavors that they sampled for us. We didn't know the differences between their traditional falooda or the second one. The shop clerk recommended the first one which turned out to be a kulfi ice cream topped with noodles and frozen basil seeds and covered in condensed milk. Amazing! Really glad we got it and tried something new. The frozen basil seeds offered great texture with each bite. The second one turned out to the be milk shake one we were looking for, so we'll definitely be back. read more

Impressive selection of flavors with several Indian options (saffron pistachio, blue mango, rose, etc). The gentleman working the counter was extraordinarily kind. He offered countless samples of different flavors. Due to this kindness, I felt too uncomfortable to decline making a purchase. I ordered a single scoop of pistachio and I couldn't eat it. I am a certified ice cream addict and am staunchly against wasting food but I actually ended up throwing this away because I couldn't eat it. The ice cream just doesn't taste very good, the flavor is mediocre, the texture is icey, and it leaves an unpleasant milky coating/taste in your mouth and throat. Horrible service. Ice creams were not labeled correctly per the employee. He could not tell me what the specialty ice creams were when I asked nor did he offer a sample since he could not describe them. Another customer finally told me it was a fruit ice cream. The server seemed totally confused when my husband asked for a single scoop. My husband pointed to size. My son wanted a nirvanaah sundae, but was told there was no chocolate. We pointed and asked for a chocolate shake. The employee made something pink. He argued that it was what we ordered. Whatever it was, it was terrible. The remade chocolate shake was syrup and milk with very little if any ice cream. Apparently, the miscommunication continued as the server asked if we wanted ice cream?? In addition, the store was not very sanitary. The worker did wear gloves though. Perhaps this place has good speciality flavors but the employees should know what they are selling. I have to agree with the previous reviewers who commented on the pricing. I've eaten a lot of scoops of ice cream, from supermarket types to ones branding themselves as premium. It doesn't make me an expert on ice cream, but it makes me an expert on scoop sizes! :) The scoops here are small for the price, even taking into account the specialty flavors. I wish I'd read the reviews on the strange ice cream tax before we went. Two scoops in a small cup came out to $5.99! The odd thing is that as we went in, my friend said "Oh, two scoops for $5.49, hope it's good" so now I'm wondering if it was a $0.50 tax since I didn't get a photograph of the price board to reference. In any case, they do get stars for the very polite employee who was staffing the store. Young, but had good customer service skills. This review is specifically for the car break-ins in the parking lot. We went into the ice cream store to get a ice cream, and came out less than 15 mins, and our car was broken into. We had a bag in the car and unfortunately both our phones were in the car. The worst part was neither nirvana or chat Bhavan have cameras nor do they care about the break-ins. There are a ton of different ice cream flavors here. They have the classics, as well as some unique flavors. There are a few I would need to Google to find out what they are. I ended up with the sugar-free rose ice cream. I enjoyed it; it had a very light and sweet taste, and I definitely didn't feel like I hated myself for eating it after. I'm sure this place would be good if you didn't want to feel rushed trying out all the flavors, but there was a line of people who came in behind us and I didn't want to be "that person." I've been wanting to come here for a while Bc I heard they have Cassata ice cream-something I haven't ever found in America! I was really excited to finally try it and I really did enjoy it. I do have to say that the bread on the cassata was very dry but overall was good and reminded me of summer nights in India :) There are tons of other unique flavors here like chikoo and paan. It's funny what happens when you date someone - you start eating things you wouldn't normally eat. For example, I'm not a big fan of sweets and before I met Sandy, I rarely got urges to eat ice cream. But since compromise is a big part of a relationship I just go with the flow in this department. Plus, it doesn't hurt to try new places. In fact, I welcome it! Sandy and I stumbled on Nirvanaah last week. It was almost by mistake. Well, not really. It's because Menchie's was closed when we showed up. So we Yelped nearby spots and saw that Nirvanaah! was only a couple blocks away AND they open later (11:30-10:30pm Mon-Sun). Nestled in a tiny strip mall between Chaat Bhavan and a Starbucks, this place often gets overlooked. It's also right next to a great breakfast joint, Country Way. However, when you roll into the parking lot, you'll notice Nirvanaah's bright pink sign almost immediately. First thing is first. The staff is 100% amazing. During our first visit, there was only one guy working there. He took his time and let us sample 10 different flavors. You'll most likely have to do this on your first visit because they have a lot of flavors you've probably never had before. Flavors like malai kulfi, saffron pistachio, sitaphal, black currant, rose petal and a ton of other exotic flavors. Don't be turned off if you're not adventurous. They also have your everyday favorites like vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate, etc. One of the best things about their ice cream is that they're 100% vegetarian with no added eggs and all natural ingredients. That takes a lot of the guilt out of their ice cream but trust me, they don't sacrifice on flavor! MALAI KULFI ~ 4.5 stars: I had no idea what this flavor was so I had to try it. Damn! I'm glad I did. It's creamy, rich and not too sweet. You get a strong hint of cardamom which really adds great flavor. If you're like me and don't have a sweet tooth in your body, get this! You won't be disappointed. This is by far my FAVORITE flavor. MANGO POMEGRANATE ~ 4 stars: I love mangoes. I love pomegranates. Put them together and I'm doubling up on the love. If you want something sweeter and less rich, go with this. It was a great compliment to the malai kulfi because the refreshing fruit flavors cut into the richness. FERRERO ROCHE ~ 4 stars: You know those hazelnut wafer chocolate covered ball sized treats wrapped in gold tin foil? Yeah, those are Ferrero Roches. This is Sandy's favorite. I tried a bit and man, it tasted amazing - just like the actual chocolate truffles. If you like chocolate with a hint of hazelnut, get this. You'll love it. We sampled a ton of other flavors and went back a second time, but these were my favorite. I can't really say much about anything else but DO go and DO sample a ton of flavors. Just a heads up. For three scoops of ice cream, I usually pay over $9. So that's a tad on the pricey side if you ask me but hey, it's okay to splurge once in a while. especially if it's GOOD. Nirvana is a state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self. I'd say the name is fitting, but I can't help but desire or want MORE ice cream after each cup! read more

I wouldn't call it the nirvana or the ecstasy for ice cream lovers, but it sure is damn interesting! This Indian Ice Cream specialty has a few conventional flavors (I'm partial to Butterscotch-Vanilla), but they also have the Kwai Beetlenut (which is better than actual Indian beetlenut), Mitha Pan, Halwasan, Rajbhog, and a few curious others. Bonus for being open pretty late at night but most Indian restaurants/place get really busy later at night so I am not surprised at their hours being pretty accommodating. They have a very wide variety of flavors and the "Flavor of the Month" was Alfonso Mango which is infamous for being the best mango on the planet! hahaha But in its ice cream form at Nirvanaah! it was pretty disappointing. Most of the flavors I tried just didn't appeal to me not because they didn't taste good but because the quality of ice cream was pretty poor. They didn't have gulab jamun and only one pistachio! :( Eventually we settled on the Custard Apple flavor which is pretty light but I loved the tiny chunks of apple! Since our experience here was pretty average and the ice cream here isn't anything special other than the fact that they have interesting flavors I would give it 3 stars. HOWEVER the pricing here is insane. I mean $2.99 for a tiny pretty much child size cup of ice cream and then after tax is $3.79!?? Ugh, why is there even tax? Aren't we buying ice cream?? Maybe I am spoiled by John's Ice Cream in Berkeley and Sweet Cup in Milpitas but both of those places give huge scoops of delicious for just $1-$2 even. And IMO the exotic assortment of flavors doesn't matter if the quality isn't there ESPECIALLY is your going to charge as much as Nirvanaah! does. And if you really want unique and exotic just head to Tara's in Oakland/Berkeley they have the BEST selection of unique ice cream that is QUALITY. P.S. We bought some of their ice cream to bring home- the butterscotch and the meetha paan. I personally loved the butterscotch. It tasted fresh and it suited my sweet tooth! I am not a fan of paan, so keep that in mind. I didn't like the paan ice cream, but only because it tasted just like paan. In fact, I think they ground up paan and mixed it in with cream. Everyone else who tried the paan ice cream loved it, though. It wasn't too sweet. This is a solid ice cream place if you want Indian varieties! Whoa...since when did Fremont offer a kulfi/ice cream one stop trendy shop?! I met my friend here late last night and we both tried their kulfi; I tried their malai kulfi and my friend had mango kulfi. The man behind the counter was sweet and wanted to make sure that we were well apprised of our decision to have kulfi, and proceeded to explain that the kulfi was cut up in slices. I was envisioning the divinity of a cake kulfi slice, and started to get really excited! When it was handed over, it was in fact kulfi cubes! Very cute and considerate, as kulfi, as y'all know can be hard to maneuver if it's not on a stick. I tried some of my friend's mango kulfi and he tried some of mine, and we both agreed that it was definitely tip top kulfi. My friends and I were playing billiards on a regular weeknight in Milpitas. When they were sick of me whooping their behinds, they figured...lets go get some ice cream. It was their best shot at leveling the playing field that fateful night. One glance at the screen of my phone, and I knew this was going to be a challenge. The time was 11:48pm. Where does one get good ice cream at this hour? Safeway? No-way! So I did what any smart & good looking young Indian male would do. I googled Nirvanaah and gave them a call. To my surprise, a sweet and friendly voice answered my call. It was Jayashree. This was the conversation: Jayashree: Hello. Nirvahaah Me: Hi. What time do you guys close? Jayashree: 10:30. Sorry sir. We are already closed. Me: (sad and hearbroken voice) Really? So I can't any ice cream? Jayashree: How far are you? Let me just say at this point that the phone was on speaker. And I swear that I saw my friend doing cartwheels. Or it could just have been my sugar low making me hallucinate. Coz let me tell you, this guy's body type...well...lets just say that it isn't built for severe athletic movements. He tried to do a hop once and had to file for short term disability. We jumped in our cars and drove as quickly as we could (within the speed limit of course - .in case you re reading this Mr. law enforcement). Went in on a rainy Sunday. My first visit. Needed to buy some treat for a friend in a nursing home who likes frozen yoghurt. Other potential customers were milling about. All of India descent. I was not. Said hello to the server behind the counter. No reply. She was busy moving back and forth. Perhaps she did not hear. I excused the no response. She remained busying herself "back and forth". No interaction to ask what I wanted. I left after a few minutes of being ignored and went to Yoghurtland up the street on Mowry. Much more positive experience and interaction. I refuse to spend my money at places that offer dreadful service when I have a choice. I thought their falooda in a cup was great! With rose syrup and malai kulfi icecream And basil seeds(I think?). Yummmm You can't choose your own icecream flavors for the falooda. It's pretty good the way it is so I wouldnt change anything about it. They give you a really slight discount( 5% I think) for liking their fb page. Nice, little shop with cutesy chairs and a counter to enjoy your icecream. They have some little chairs for kids too but the adult chairs could be more comfy. read more
