If you're in the mood for home-y chai, this is the spot to hit up. I was anxious that the different flavors would be syrup based, but amazingly, each cup is brewed with fresh ingredients. The steaming technique is unconventional, but it surprisingly yields a balanced, delicious and customizable cup of chai. The tea flavor is somewhat lighter than what you'd get from boiling it, but I find it refreshing and it allows the other spices to really come through and deliver the bold flavor that is necessary in a cup of chai. I combined the ginger and cardamom and it was excellent. The ginger has a delicate punch without it knocking you out. The cardamom level is perfect and is not at all bitter or soapy. There's a person on here who gave this place 2 stars because he burnt his own tongue from drinking hot chai and that's just so funny and silly to me, I hope his ego is feeling better. With the musical vibe and local chai shop, this place was offering the full experience. It is located in the corner of the plaza towards the far end, parking on a weekend could be difficult. We visited on a Saturday evening and the place was buzzing with people, trying to get a seat or place the order. It is a self service location with order being placed at the front, and calling your name when it's ready. We ordered the bun maska, a veggie burger, and a chai. For years, our Chandni Chowk routine was simple: khaana jo bhi ho, the last stop had to be Chaiwalla for their fennel chai. It had that unmistakable saunf flavor - fragrant, comforting, and genuinely unlike any other chai around. As a Mumbaikar, I don't say this lightly: that cup was the perfect ending. We returned today after a few months, and sadly, the fennel chai tasted like regular masala doodh chai. There was no fennel flavour at all, even by the last sip. Thinking the first cup might have been a mix-up, I ordered a second one - but it tasted exactly the same. When two cups tell the same story, something has clearly changed. I sincerely hope the owner personally tastes the fennel chai being served now and checks what has happened to the original recipe. Came here for brunch. It's one of my boyfriend's favorite places to get some coffee. He recommended me to try this restaurant because they have their own version of instant noodles. I know that it's a bit counterintuitive to order instant noodles at a restaurant but it's one of my indulgent treats. Can never go wrong with it and they make it super piping hot here. My boyfriend go this coffee and I got a cardamom chai, I believe. Lots of refreshing spices. Also comes out piping hot. Had to wait for quite awhile until it cooled down, but pretty good once it was. I got their Paneer Maggi. Comes in a pretty decently large to go container with the soup it was boiled in and lots of chunks of paneer and lots of cut carrots and green bell pepper and corn. I'm not the biggest fan of bell pepper so I sort of ate around this and my boyfriend killed it. It's made from Maggi instant noodles as the name implies. Decent junky snack food. I had heard about this place, but visited recently with friends. After dinner we felt like having the tea in the earthen glass and hence we came here. It's a very busy place and I was surprised that this is open till late night or almost 24/7 this is open. They have many different types of tea and it's interesting how the flavours come close to based on which tea you have ordered. All you need is a good cup of chai on a Friday evening. I went by the ETA stated on the Bites app, but by the time I arrived the chai was already cold. The manager was kind enough to make a fresh one, which I appreciated but this second attempt came out extremely hot and actually burnt my tongue. Once that happens, the entire experience just falls apart. I ordered a ginger + cardamom chai and specifically requested mild ginger. That request clearly wasn't followed - the ginger was overpowering and harsh. Their heating technique is like a coffee shop - fast heat/steam boil and it affects the flavor/ balance of the chai in a big way. With just half a cup of their regular size, I ended up with tongue burn, bitterness, and that gut-ruining acidity that stays with you long after you're done. With thousands of chai options in the Bay Area, this shop really needs to tighten up on consistency. It seems like Chai Wala is trying to do too much without mastering the basics. After anticipating this chai for over an hour on a Friday evening, the result was disappointing. Sometimes, sticking to basics and honoring the simplicity of chai is all that's needed. You order at the kiosk and pick up the items at the pick up window. We ordered the Ginger Chai and Bun Maska. The Ginger Chai was warm and not too sweet, more the bitter side, which made it delicious and perfect to drink on a cold night! The Bun Maska was also pretty good combination to dip into the Chai. The buttery bun with the slight sweetness from the tutti frutti made it a good combination! This place (and the plaza) is a good late night hang out spot, as the stores here stay open late into the night. Getting parking on the weekend was tough and lines were flowing out of the restaurant. Both front and back door were left open for ventilation which created windy interiors. Despite the self ordering kiosks the store was crazy busy. The order was coming out in parts and its self service so u will be going multiple times to the pick up area to grab stuff. The chais were okay, I wasn't too impressed. The tandoori paneer was way too spicy to eat. I selected less spicy, and the mildest possible but none of us could even eat it. They serve different types of chai, and if you ask, you can even get it served in a kullad (clay cup) for an extra $1, which adds a nice traditional touch. Second visit (in two days!) and this time I tried some food. Ordered the Mumbai sandwich ( since I'm from Mumbai) and was curious how the Maggi (Indian noodles) would taste. Both of them hit the spot like what!!! The sandwich as absolutely perfect in taste and texture and the portion was very generous. The maggi was yummy, I think they added more of the tastemaker masala that we Indians love so much. What a treat! Finally tried the Chaiwala shop. It can get pretty crowded. There are a few tables but pretty cramped area so do not expect starbucks vibe where you work on your laptop and sip your drink. This is more of a get your order and enjoy elsewhere kind of place (unless you like it cramped and loud). We ordered the refresher for kids (Watermelon flavor). We forgot to ask them to not add the Indian spice (black salt). That ruined the drink for the kids. I had the Kadak chai and it was just ok. Nothing special. It was very very hot and I burnt my tongue but thats my mistake for not realizing that they serve it that hot. I also ordered the Mumbai sandwich which was very good. I suggest getting this one if you plan visit this place. For Chai, you should go to the store next door (Deccan Morsels). They have Irani tea which is much better tasting IMO. read more

I won't lie, a friend told me she tried it out and the tea was too strong for her. When I went with family, we ordered 3 kadak chai, and 2 bun maska. The service was rapid, and the quality was excellent as well. The chai is a bit strong so if you drink doodh pati or don't prefer strong chai- I'd recommend getting something else from the menu. I've also tried their rose chai which I found is similar to kadak with a faint essence of rose. I think they use the same formula for the different chai's they offer. I have tried their butterscotch milkshake as well and if you like chocolate with a peanuty hit you'd like it. The ambience is well- depending on what day and time you go. I went once on a weekend in the evening and there is music, the place can get crowded and loud- so if you get overwhelmed easily come earlier. Overall 10/10 read more

I've come by for their rose chai a few times. I love it! Fragrant, very hot and they will make the hot version without sugar and with alternative milk. I do wish they would offer a ceramic mug or fill my own cup. Often I don't buy drinks in shops if I have to use a disposable cup and lid.
