I decided to order take out from here one night, since I've been wanting to try their food. I got the vegetarian quesadilla, which was great! Food was hot and fresh. The veggies were cooked perfectly and went well together in the wrap. The rice portion was also great and the guacamole was very tasty! One of the best I've ever had, so I'm assuming it's homemade? Great meal for a light dinner! Plus you get chips & salsa too! The only issue I had, is with the waiting area. It was a busy night, so while I was waiting for my order, I kept getting drafted with cold air! The seating area is right near the front door, and people were going in and out the whole time. I think the layout with the host stand and waiting area could be rearranged, so you aren't freezing while waiting for your food. So coming from south Florida I really don't expect much from Mexican food in the Carolina's but I was totally blown away. Located in the new Publix plaza is Nixtamal my new favorite restaurant! We were seated immediately and within seconds given fresh chips and salsa. If you're questioning whether or not you should get the table side guacamole the answer is always yes. Super fresh and tasty perfect amount of everything. We ordered the el jefe which was grilled shrimp, chicken and steak with onions pineapple and cheese. It was the perfect amount to share between two people. Seasoned to absolute perfection so tasty I'm still thinking about it. The drink menu is also amazing we ordered a strawberry mojito and it was one of the best I've ever had. The inside is a cute ambiance with black leather booths and a nice bar area. There's also plenty of seating outside when the weather gets warmer. Service was excellent and we were checked on numerous times. Can't wait to come back here!! read more

I have been to Nixtamal twice. They start you with chips and salsa. They can also do table side guac.. The Birria torta was delicious. The broth was very flavorful and the bread was not soggy which is usually the case for most Birria tacos. The portions were large and great for left overs. The carne asado taco was also a top pick, great flavors. The carnitas was a miss. The flavor was lacking and the meat had dry pieces. Overall it's a great establishment. Great ambiance and service. Why would I give a place with really good food and decent service a 1-star review? Because there's no way to give a zero-star review, that's why. I love the food here, but when I have Mexican I like to have a cold draft beer. $9 for a large draft. $9???? For Mexican beer like Modelo that's not even high quality? Do you think you are in NYC or San Francisco? It's a shame because I live very close and would go there a lot. You'd do well to check out Bigotes, Papas, Cantina etc for a competitive reality check. Very disappointing experience at lunch time. Our server could not have demonstrated less concern for us! The food was mediocre. The lettuce was dark and slimy from being frozen. I ordered hard tacos and my husband ordered carne asada. My tacos were dropped off by someone other than our server, and they were not hard, but soft. No big deal, I'll eat them. We waited to see if our server would follow with the steak. Waited, waited. We both ate one of my tacos. Waited more, finally after 10+ minutes my husband flagged down the server (who never came by and avoided eye contact) and he just said "it's coming." More time goes by, and we finally get it. It was hammered so thin that it looked like a piece of beef jerky. Definitely not worth $17. We're both former food service professionals and are very forgiving and understanding that not every experience is going to be 5-stars. However, this was a combination of lackluster staff, mediocre food, and non existent management. Even the ambiance was meh. We will usually give every place 2-3 chances but this one didn't have a single redeeming quality. read more

My wife and I had to try this new place in town that opened fairly recent. I understand that it might be a franchise or a chain but I'm not entirely sure. The wait staff seemed very friendly. I loved that they made guacamole fresh at your table if you ordered it. I do like this place but I do have a few things that are a bit odd to me as far as this type of restaurant. The queso dip is more of a soup consistency rather than a dip, and the salsa is a bit of the same. Other than that I found the flavors to be fine. Most other places that serve Mexican style foods or some type of fusion are typically over salted which does bring out the flavors but you also contend with the salt. However with this restaurant it seemed as if they didn't over salt their menu which allowed you to actually taste the flavor of the food rather than the salt. I for one appreciate that. Restaurant atmosphere seems very organized and clean and friendly and my wife and I will probably go back and try it again. read more

We went right after they opened. The portions were generous but the flavor was lacking. I had a chimichanga and it was covered liquid queso instead of melted cheese making it soggy. The stuffing was shredded chicken with no seasoning. I'm hoping they get things figured out the longer they're open. I'll give them another chance. read more
