They didnt have any explanation of what the dishes are nor prices so i just asked what was good and they gave me a few options - so i went for the grilled fish and cassava couscous m. When the food was ready they told me it was $18 (seems like thats the price of most of the dishes), for a minute i was like damnn that expensive, until i saw the serving size - it was a big whole fish with a few different sauces garnished with onions and tomatoes, and a big tin of couscous. $18 will feed 2-3 people!! I get the feeling that they just moved locations as they were busy cooking for deliveries with phone continuing to ring. Anyway its a great addition to the neighborhood and i am excited to try the okra stew with fufu.

I'll be honest--I was a bit disappointed that the flavors weren't more distinctly Algerian, and the fries weren't quite the authentic taste I was hoping for. On paper, it felt a little basic. But then there was a tiny cup of some magical dipping sauce that completely elevated the whole platter and saved it from being ordinary. That sauce alone made the dish memorable. We also ordered the hummus side, which was quite good, and the roasted eggplant. I was surprised to discover it was basically just perfectly roasted eggplant drizzled with high-quality olive oil--not the baba ganoush I was expecting--but it was delicious nonetheless. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and might actually try recreating it at home. What really clinched the experience for me, though, was the server. She made us feel like we had stepped into her home and she was our hostess. I don't know if she's the owner, but her warm smile and friendly demeanor made me wish we could spend the whole afternoon there listening to her life story. The portion size was great. The fish with the peppers, tomatoes and onions was fresh and good. The issue was service. The service seemed like they had trouble following up, splitting a check evenly with 3 credit cards, bringing out all the food. The restaurant was not busy. This could be more of a take out place.

Sylla is a good Ivorian restaurant that had a few misses at the plate on a recent Sunday afternoon…read moreafter church. I was among the first persons dining in at Sylla approaching 1PM, so service for the day was commencing, primarily with takeout orders, but I was the first to sit down and had my pick of where to sit. There is a bar area on the back left area closest to the kitchen with bar stools, but I do not think they have a liquor license. I sat in the front by the window. All the tables are stainless steel hightops, bringing a contemporary and streamlined aesthetic. Very nice. I sat down and ordered the fried red snapper to get the crispness desired, but it can be order grilled. It comes with the raw onions and tomatoes, which typically accompany Ivorian food. I also ordered the attieke as my side dish, which looks like couscous, but made with cassava. The red states very good, flavorful and crisp. It's a bit bony, but good knife and fork skills can handle it well. The attieke comes with a bouillon cube, which is to be crushed and sprinkled carefully over the attieke, being careful not to overdo it with the saltiness. The ginger lemonade and the bissap were not available, so I ordered a coke. I had to wait on a glass of ice water, because the dishes had not come out of the dishwasher yet. I ordered the rest to go: savory kedjenou guinea fowl stew with veggies and brown rice as the side (they gave me white rice in error); peanut stew with chicken as the protein and a foutou ball properly in saran wrap; and the gigot lamb shank (it came one bone as opposed to two). The kedjenou is good, but there was not a lot of meat left on the guinea fowl's bones. The guinea fowl is very much like chicken. The broth was very rich, but it was not too oily. The broth was; however, too salty and the white rice helped to absorb and buffer the saltiness. Perhaps this is the level of seasoning the Ivorians use, but it was a bit much for my palate. The peanut stew was excellent. Here, the chef, who is the wife of the husband and wife team, whipped up that peanut stew to a level of smooth creaminess I had not experienced with this stew before. The chicken in it was more plentiful than the guinea fowl in the kedjenou and the sliced foutou was the perfect accompaniment for the peanut stew. This gets a high rec from me. When I ordered the gigot, I asked him if it comes as a two bone order as I have had at New Ivoire and as it is served at other restaurants. I was disappointed to see it was only one shank bone at home and I was so disappointed, because he, the husband, said it comes as a two bone order. I asked, because the price point of $25 at Sylla is lower than the $33 at New Ivoire and other places. Well at Sylla, you'll have to spend $50 for what New Ivoire seves at a considerably lower rate. It was still very good at Sylla and is probably the best of all the dishes I ordered at Sylla. The fries were also good as an accompaniment to the lamb shank, whose ultra savory and rich fat marbling was especially punctuated with and cut across by the acidic onions and tomatoes. Really, that combo lights up my palate and is the highlight of all I had from Sylla. Don't expect service in the way you would at other restaurants. The Ivorians apparently don't operate that way. I had to go to the bar to order my takeout. After the service of the fish and attieke, he never returned, except to bring a glass of ice water after it had come out of the washer. He was not rude or unwelcoming, but service has apparently a different interpretation at Ivorian restaurants and one must adjust expectations. The bathroom, by the way, was very clean. It's all the way in the back right behind the brick wall with the flatscreen. 3.5 stars, but could be better if not for the missed opportunities.
