Beef stew with beans and jollof
    Anna L.

Cute, small African restaurant with food on steam trays. It is also halal. The owner is very sweet and friendly. She offered me samples. I ended up getting the beef stew, jollof, and a chicken dish that I didn't remember the name of. Might have been yassa. The food wasn't that spicy although the flavor of the chicken with onions has a really strong mustard flavor. The pounded yam helps mellow out the flavor. The jollof was grainy. I enjoyed the beef stew. The food was ok, but I had better.

Ate here today for dinner by myself after work. This was definitely my first time eating West African food feeling curious about what to choose and eat for the first time. I had brought and tried the egusi soup and had a side of garri (mashed cassava) that it tasted quite good and had a strong spice taste to make it tasty. The service was also phenomenal and extremely friendly that the person who was working in the store name was Beatrice. She was also super nice, welcoming and chill to explain to me what each dishes taste and look like and how it's cooked from scratch. I couldn't agree more and I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Joloff rice, egusi stew with chicken. About half the portion saving rest for tomorrow.

The ladies at the store were busy cooking in 90 degree weather and I was so impressed with the flavors. The chef made me a sampler of what she was cooking and everything we so good. I figure if they can stand the heat and make it, the least I can do is have stew during the NYC heatwave. well worth it. I will be back to try other things.

This recent newly opened restaurant is worth a try. Delicious African food. It is a very small take-out store. The food is prepped and ready to order. They have a few main options, about 4 daily, and a few sides, about 3 or can choose a bread. I tried the red stew with chicken. This is my fav. Very flavorful and a bit spicy. Great with the jollof rice side, also my fav. Also had the okra dish. It is good if you like okra. The melon seed dish is good also. It is a bit more mild than the flavors of the red stew. Good with rice or garri. Garri has an interesting chewy texture, more so than a potato. I tried a bit of everything to learn about the foods also. There are a bunch of baked goods to choose from. These are from an Italian bakery in Astoria and very tasty. My fav is the apple turnover. Crust is baked well. The elephant ears cookie is very good - crispy and flaky. It is about $2-3/ea for the baked goods. The owner is very nice and friendly. She took the time to explain the different dishes and answer quite a few questions about the foods. Price is very reasonable. About $8/ea for the mains. Would definitely go back. Also good to help small businesses especially at this time.

The lady behind the counter was INCREDIBLY nice, a very rare trait for almost any eatery. She shows interest the things you talk about with her. I was allowed to sample a few of the items on the steam table before making my order which was great. All of the food that I ordered had amazing texture, nice flavor, and paired well together. The place itself does not have anywhere to sit, but one can easily walk to a nearby park or bench to eat the food as I did. There is a variety of things to buy that are not hot foods waiting to be eaten along the walls inside. Will definitely be coming here again the next time I am craving west African food!

How wonderful to have this take-out only spot in Astoria/Dutch Kills. I recently went on a rainy night for a meal that would give me energy. I eat soups/stews year-round. The portion for the price and quality is great. We ordered egusi with salmon and yassa. We ordered garri and fonio for the sides and what you order is based on preference. There are vegetarian options as you can see from the attached menu. It's a small menu for now and I hope they can find a way to add some seasonal variety so I can try more soups/stews. They also have coffee and baked goods (from a bakery in Ditmars) if you find yourself in the area and need breakfast.

Went to Nneji for pick up. Liked the menu and the food. The packaging of the food was incredible as well. Very good prices and portions. I had Yassa with Fonio and also the classic Garri with Egusi soup (Ofe Egusi in Igbo). It was a solid mix of West African dishes and there more on the menu to get/try. Cannot wait to go back again for some more.

I ordered the chicken platter: sliced chicken breast, pan-fried, with French fries and a simple salad of lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers dressed in olive oil and vinegar. I'll be honest--I was a bit disappointed that the flavors weren't more distinctly Algerian, and the fries weren't quite the authentic taste I was hoping for. On paper, it felt a little basic. But then there was a tiny cup of some magical dipping sauce that completely elevated the whole platter and saved it from being ordinary. That sauce alone made the dish memorable. We also ordered the hummus side, which was quite good, and the roasted eggplant. I was surprised to discover it was basically just perfectly roasted eggplant drizzled with high-quality olive oil--not the baba ganoush I was expecting--but it was delicious nonetheless. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and might actually try recreating it at home. What really clinched the experience for me, though, was the server. She made us feel like we had stepped into her home and she was our hostess. I don't know if she's the owner, but her warm smile and friendly demeanor made me wish we could spend the whole afternoon there listening to her life story. I'd absolutely go back--especially to try the desserts, which we sadly didn't have time for because we had to rush out the door to catch our Uber.

The portion size was great. The fish with the peppers, tomatoes and onions was fresh and good. The issue was service. The service seemed like they had trouble following up, splitting a check evenly with 3 credit cards, bringing out all the food. The restaurant was not busy. This could be more of a take out place.

I was among the first persons dining in at Sylla approaching 1PM, so service for the day was commencing, primarily with takeout orders, but I was the first to sit down and had my pick of where to sit. There is a bar area on the back left area closest to the kitchen with bar stools, but I do not think they have a liquor license. I sat in the front by the window. All the tables are stainless steel hightops, bringing a contemporary and streamlined aesthetic. Very nice. I sat down and ordered the fried red snapper to get the crispness desired, but it can be order grilled. It comes with the raw onions and tomatoes, which typically accompany Ivorian food. I also ordered the attieke as my side dish, which looks like couscous, but made with cassava. The red states very good, flavorful and crisp. It's a bit bony, but good knife and fork skills can handle it well. The attieke comes with a bouillon cube, which is to be crushed and sprinkled carefully over the attieke, being careful not to overdo it with the saltiness. The ginger lemonade and the bissap were not available, so I ordered a coke. I had to wait on a glass of ice water, because the dishes had not come out of the dishwasher yet. I ordered the rest to go: savory kedjenou guinea fowl stew with veggies and brown rice as the side (they gave me white rice in error); peanut stew with chicken as the protein and a foutou ball properly in saran wrap; and the gigot lamb shank (it came one bone as opposed to two). The kedjenou is good, but there was not a lot of meat left on the guinea fowl's bones. The guinea fowl is very much like chicken. The broth was very rich, but it was not too oily. The broth was; however, too salty and the white rice helped to absorb and buffer the saltiness. Perhaps this is the level of seasoning the Ivorians use, but it was a bit much for my palate. The peanut stew was excellent. Here, the chef, who is the wife of the husband and wife team, whipped up that peanut stew to a level of smooth creaminess I had not experienced with this stew before. The chicken in it was more plentiful than the guinea fowl in the kedjenou and the sliced foutou was the perfect accompaniment for the peanut stew. This gets a high rec from me. When I ordered the gigot, I asked him if it comes as a two bone order as I have had at New Ivoire and as it is served at other restaurants. I was disappointed to see it was only one shank bone at home and I was so disappointed, because he, the husband, said it comes as a two bone order. I asked, because the price point of $25 at Sylla is lower than the $33 at New Ivoire and other places. Well at Sylla, you'll have to spend $50 for what New Ivoire seves at a considerably lower rate. It was still very good at Sylla and is probably the best of all the dishes I ordered at Sylla. The fries were also good as an accompaniment to the lamb shank, whose ultra savory and rich fat marbling was especially punctuated with and cut across by the acidic onions and tomatoes. Really, that combo lights up my palate and is the highlight of all I had from Sylla. Don't expect service in the way you would at other restaurants. The Ivorians apparently don't operate that way. I had to go to the bar to order my takeout. After the service of the fish and attieke, he never returned, except to bring a glass of ice water after it had come out of the washer. He was not rude or unwelcoming, but service has apparently a different interpretation at Ivorian restaurants and one must adjust expectations. The bathroom, by the way, was very clean. It's all the way in the back right behind the brick wall with the flatscreen. 3.5 stars, but could be better if not for the missed opportunities.
