Bummed cause I was really looking forward to trying this place. It was busy but not totally packed. We came in and no one greeted us we waited for them to point us to the only empty table. They said they'd bring us water but didn't. We sat staring at each other for about 10-15 minutes with no menus or water or any other greeting or excuse. Another couple entered 20 minutes after us they got a greeting with a smile with menus and water right away. I guess we looked poor. Or not old and white enough. I've eaten here twice now and would give it a 3.5 if yelp allowed for .5 ratings. The good: the Nem Kao/Nam Khao and Lao Spicy Sausage are fantastic and the highlights of the menu imo. Highly recommended. The so-so: The Tangy Tamarind, Salt-n-pepa, and Hot Passion tenders. The tangy tamarind was good, but not as flavorful as I would have hoped, and the hot passion had a good flavor but was marred by the fact of being cloyingly sweet. The Salt-n-pepa was the best of the 3, but part of the problem is that the tenders are very large. They are white meat, so all the flavor is in the crispy exterior, and since they are a large size, you get bites that consist mostly of bland white meat. I imagine that the wing version of these are much better, and I'll have to try those next time. The bad: Salted Egg yolk rib bites. These are fried rib bites and so when you bite into them, you're mostly biting into bone, and it's hard to know where the actual meat is, and the majority of the pieces have very little meat on them, though a smaller amount have a lot more. As far as the flavor, it wasn't particularly appealing or unappealing, just kinda whatever. I did appreciate the large slices of jalapeno in them though, but that was the best thing about it. All in all, I do like this place and the Lao dishes especially are awesome and highly recommended. I would just avoid the tenders and the rib bites. read more

Look no further as there's another great wing spot opening up in town. This place is a branch of Nom Nom (from downtown Vancouver). We came to the soft opening, ready to eat and try some wings. We ordered a good selection of wings to share - Salt n Pepper, Satay, Nom Nom, and their Habenero Passion wings. We also ordered a couple of classic dishes - Nem Kao and Lao's Spicy Sausage. The wings were cooked perfectly, and all had a unique flavor to them that were memorable. The Habenero Passion was a great combo. It was sweet and refreshing and had a slight heat to it (I think it could be spicier). I also enjoyed the Salt and Pepper wings as the flavor was balanced and enjoyable. My friends liked the Satay style wings - they enjoyed that satay sauce a bit too much. I also liked the popcorn chicken - its seasoned very well and not overpowering with the spices. The classic Nem Kao and Spicy Sausage are perfect, saving me a trip to downtown Vancouver. It is still a soft opening, and they do not have their beverages or liquor at this time, but will eventually get it. read more

Was very excited to try Nom Nom wings, but unfortunately I never made it to the food. Immediately got off to a bad start, their door is badly splintered and when we opened it to walk in I was stabbed in the hand and my finger was cut open. As we entered into the restaurant there were two people behind the bar and one told us they would be right with us. We then stood there awkwardly in the doorway for several minutes, my finger lightly bleeding, before one of them came over and told us we could sit wherever we like. So not really sure why they didn't just tell us that in the first place. We sat down and waited over 10 minutes where no one ever came back over to us or brought us menus or even acknowledged our existence. No water, no napkins, no nothing. They were only moderately busy, but we were just completely ignored. I kept trying to make eye contact with either of the two servers and succeeded once or twice, so we were apparently not forgotten just ignored. Seemed like a lot of people were wrapping up their meals as both the waiters were dropping lots of checks, would have been pretty easy to just drop a menu as they walked by us repeatedly. Finally after 10 plus minutes another couple came in and was seated by one of the waiters and given menus immediately, so at that point we got up and left. We took my bleeding hand and our business to Deschutes instead, which always has excellent service. If you are thinking of eating here I recommend you do the same. read more

Folks, this restaurant is a sleeper. By that I mean, it deserves far more recognition in the restaurant paradise that we call Portland. Four of us went for an early dinner today before a dance performance. We must've ordered easily half the menu and not one dish missed the mark. Wings are the featured item but honestly, the small plates are the stars. Let me see if I can list the outstanding dishes: charred cabbage, which tasted much better than it sounds, charred cauliflower, fish sauce wings, tempura maitake mushroom, curry noodles with beef, Lao sausage, braised carrots, crab fried rice , the best little fried eggrolls, and for dessert, feather-light beignets with strawberry sauce. The dishes were beautifully spiced, and the sauces for the vegetables were on point. We did not sample the cocktails, but they looked wonderful. The interior is a cozy vibe in a decades-old Pearl district building. Service was friendly and helpful. One of the better meals I've had in quite a while! Nom Nom has a nice setup on the interior, however doesn't scream at me in comparison to similar styled restaurants. Additionally, the experience in which I had with 3-5 other friends was less than ideal. We each made a purchase of a single entree and waited quite a long amount of time for our food to be prepared and served to us. While the staff was friendly, we were unsure as to why we'd waited so long given the fact that the restaurant was quite slow. Nonetheless, once the food arrived, we were happy. The flavors are there, the rave is true.
