Sitting in stop and go traffic on Shattuck, due to construction, I'm pounding this tofu bahn mi and blasting Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" so loud I can only process the deliciousness of this sando. I used to get a tofu bahn mi 1-2 times a week from nomad when I worked up the street. I miss those times. Now, I consider it the best lunch of the week if I manage to swing by to pick one up when I'm in the neighborhood. Absolutely supreme bahn mi. I was having a major craving for GOOD bahn mi and Nomad Cafe delivered just that with flying colors. I got the spicy chicken and it was so delicious. The flavors were vibrant and the jalapeño was perfectly hot! My friend got the pork chop one and she was also thoroughly impressed. After finding Korean Souel BBQ closed, I wandered into Nomad Cafe a block or so down Shattuck thinking I'd get a sandwich or bagel. . . . wait .. . Vietnamese Sandwiches?!? Banh Mi are all $6 which looks a few bucks cheaper than the regular sandwiches, but they don't come with a side salad standard, which is included with the regular sandwiches (you can add on a side salad for $2.50). Boyfriend absolutely loves this place. He tries to order from here every time we are in the area. I'm not much of a sandwich person, but whenever we do order here I devour the banh mi. What really gets this place 5 stars is the service. We get the Tofu Banh Mi and I'll order the chicken and pork for my family. They can make the Tofu one vegan, which is basically without mayo. Pam F. darling wanted to meet up for coffee and check out this spot on Shattuck and I'm always down to try out a new shindig, as long as it's not notorious for something like shrimp dumplings or crab stroganoff. I walked in and was hit with the three C's I can always appreciate: cozy, cleanly and compact. Sheeny, shiny metal tables took up the floor space and the joint held a number of patrons without being overly crowded; folks sat quietly entranced by whatever dominated their laptop screens, headphones stuck in their ears and coffee mugs plopped down beside them. I made my way to the counter and was greeted by a friendly, smiley gyal who didn't seem bothered by my (typical) indecisive behavior. "Sorry, hold on..." I said, creeping to the right of the counter to get a better glimpse of the hefty chalkboard menu boasting breakfast items, specialty sandwiches and-of course-plenty of coffee concoctions and the usual coffee shop staple bevvies. I ordered an artichoke bagel (artichoke hearts and cream cheese on an everything bagel; though you can get it on any bagel you so choose) and an Americano and took my time looking at the pastries, most of which seemed to come from local bakery Semifreddi's. The bagel was good, as was the Americano. And the coffee date with Pam was fabulous too, making the trip more than worth it. I live right down the street and I'm a huge fan! I knew the previous owner and just like the new owner, they both are hella nice and give great customer service. It also seems like the new owner kept the same staff from the previous owner, which I appreciate on so many levels! Along with the coffee, there is a great food menu. The breakfast sandwiches are on point along with their Banh Mi and turkey sandwiches for lunch. To give a brief history lesson, a few years ago there was a string of coffee shop robberies throughout Berkeley and Oakland where thieves were walking in and stealing people's laptops. Because of Nomad's camera system, they were able to catch the thugs. I say all this to say, you should feel very secure here with your laptop and electronic devices! read more

Got two banh mi with pineapple chicken for our neighborhood walk. These were delicious, warm and very affordable. The chicken was delicious and the pineapple was nice and tangy. Open for pick-up during COVID This is my son's favorite Vietnamese sandwich shop since he was five years old. Still compares every sandwich to Nomad's (which he calls The Gold Standard). He orders the Tofu Bahnmi. I enjoy the Chicken Bahnmi with extra jalapeños. Also, their breakfast croissant sandwich is a family favorite. When I'm outta coffee grounds and don't want to stand in a grocery line outside during social distancing, Nomad has freshly grounded beans to your grinding preference. I used to work down the street from this place. I am not sure what happened. Maybe the pandemic change their whole program. I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk from Nomad and the taste was a bit off. I noticed they were using Kirkland brand oat milk, which I've never seen a cafe use. I'm not sure if it was the specific brand of oat milk or the espresso, but there was a sweetness to the cappuccino that wasn't enjoyable. read more

Nomad is cramped and crowded even on weekdays, and it's hard to find a place to sit. Even harder to find a place to plug in. And it smells like bathroom, which may be due to the fact that the bathroom is located smack in the middle of the seating area (peeeee-ew). It sucks to have to plunge your face into your coffee cup while reading just to avoid the stench. The space isn't much to talk about; there's no real ambiance, although the glass windows are nice. As opposed to the other kind of windows. No, as opposed to cafes where you can't see outside. Thing is, I'd rather go someplace without windows where I can actually a) get a seat, and b) breathe. Side note for those who do not understand the concept of a cafe: While it is a public space, it's RUDE to have loud conversations on your cellphone. For food and coffee, there are better places to head than Nomad cafe. The beans they use are so-so, and the espresso drinks I've ordered usually arrive over-milked or scalded and bitter. The bagels are fine but nothing to write home about. But there are a couple things Nomad definitely has going for it. First, almost any time I have visited, the cafe is silent or nearly so. There is plenty of open seating inside and out, and the ample windowspace floods the whole cafe with natural light. It's rare to struggle to find an outlet, and wifi is free. Although I don't love the wares, I head to Nomad regularly as the perfect place to focus. More pleasant than a library study room, but less distracting than an indie-music-blaring hipster hang, Nomad serves its purpose in the Berkeley/Oakland cafe ecosystem. read more

I dropped by the Nomad Cafe a couple of days ago to treat myself to one of their killer Heartichoke sandwiches. The space was as clean, pleasant, and low-key as always, and most of the tables occupied. But within two bites, I knew something had changed. That "something" was food volume: there were noticeably fewer artichoke hearts in the sandwich (two, maybe two and half) and very little goat cheese. There were lots of sun-dried tomatoes (not adequately softened), and the roll was as fresh and lovely as in past sandwiches, but it clearly wasn't the same item it used to be. The accompanying salad shrank, too, down to a few mixed greens with some minced carrot. The greens were colorful and fresh, but relatively few. Where were the seeds and nuts they used to put in? It used to be a truly impressive side salad. It was obvious that economies were being implemented, and I wondered whether the cafe had changed hands. I see my suspicion confirmed here. Kind of a shame, the way I made the connection. The quality of the food is still good, and the new owners haven't raised prices, but relative to what I used to enjoy here, I'm bumping it down to 3.5 stars. If this were the first meal I'd ever eaten here, I'd have said it was fine, but that's it. The good news is, now I know how to make my own killer Heartichoke sandwich. ;-) read more

I stumbled upon Nomad Cafe while running some errands around the area and thought I should stop by to check it out. I was immediately greeted by a super friendly man who looked like he was the owner. I ordered a Cafe Ole and a Vegan bar and they were both very tasty. I definitely look forward to trying the rest of the menu when I'm in the area again. The only hesitation I have is that it's a small place that doesn't seem to fit too many people and it was a little too crowded for my taste but that shouldn't be a turn off to anyone because you can always enjoy your food to go or sit outside when seats are available. I'll be back because the man at the register was so friendly and welcoming that for me that's the ticket that keeps me coming back to places. Hooray for Nomad Cafe!!! read more

updating my review of 12/06 -- it's been sold, so who knows what will happen now. Plus removing one star because they have plated over all the electrical outlets. Still have cat5 ports for broadband though. But I loved all the outlets so my battery would not run down. I am yelping them from the cafe though, at least internet still works. ********************************************************************** Don't go to the Nomad. Is it bad? No, it's good, very good. I just don't like when it's crowded. It has a good location, parking is easy, and it's clean. The ambiental music is always interesting and good for studying / working / conversing to, and it's played low enough that you can go your own way with your iPod or whatever and it won't bleed into your own personal soundtrack. I especially appreciate that it has ports for a cat-5 connection along with wireless; I think the cables connection's more stable and fast. They do a great job with the coffee, even taught me about the "split-shot Americano" so I can have it at 7pm but get to sleep before 3am. They win awards for their recycling and composting and you can get coffee in a REAL CUP. Amazing. I see the average rating is lower, I'm guessing it's related to either their limited menu (food choices aren't very diverse, nothing that grabs me) or their prices. But for the quality, cleanliness, speed of service and overall experience, I don't think it's out of line. But remember: do not go here. read more

Came here to watch a friend perform her music. It's a cozy set up and is like "Central Perk" for People's Park in Berkeley. Not in the best of neighborhoods, but parking is easy and this cafe is like an oasis of caffeine and vegan food in an otherwise not very commercial district. The cafe was cute and the people working there seemed nice, friendly and happy with working there. I appreciate that they invite musicians to come perform and that the art adorning the walls were all for sale. They sell only vegetarian foods and even the beer was organic. While this isn't en route for anywhere I would go so I don't see myself re-visiting in the near future, - it can definitely be a neighborhood joint and a favorite to many. read more
