Let's get serious, here. You're eating in an airport. This isn't a question of how Nonna ranks against its sister (second cousin?) restaurants across the city, because it's not even close. In terms of airport food, however, it beats the hell out of most everything else in Mitchell International, and is as representative of fine dining in Milwaukee as Rick Bayless' Torta Frontera in ORD or Todd English's Bonfire in BOS. I can guarantee you're not going to see the famous chefs anywhere near these kitchens, but with the amount of participation the Bartolottas put into the creation of Nonna, including menu inputs and staff training, I was willing to put up with the hassle of having my privates fondled a second time by TSA to visit Concourse D and grab a table. I don't know if other airports are contractually prevented from serving nothing but the most generic brands of beer and wine, but it was nice to see Spotted Cow on the menu as well as several selections of wine by the glass. I was disappointed by the Caprese salad because the small balls of mozza, cherry tomatoes, and basil chiffonade were dumped on top of iceberg lettuce and served in a bowl. I was also disappointed by the concept of pork bucatini - any serious Italian restaurant should know the heavy red sauces are not traditionally served with long, extruded pastas - but the flavor was nice, with a large amount of ground pork and bits of a kinda-spicy pork sausage. The noodles were a nice al dente, too. The Bartolotta boys have done a lot for fine dining in this city, and Nonna is doing something similar for a quickly-expanding airport. As someone who has had way too many Quiznos subs and - God forbid - Chilis Too in his traveling lifetime, I welcome this attempt at upscale airport dining. read more

Strange but true. The Milwaukee food scene can be somewhat of a surprise. There is some great stuff if you know where to look. General Mitchell Airport? Oh yeah. Situated in Concourse D (the Midwest Terminal), you find Nonna's...which is owned by the Bartolotta Restaurant group..which is like the Italian mafia of great restaurants in the Milwaukee area...Lake Park Bistro, Mr. B's, etc.. First off, when arriving at a typical airport and expecting to dine, you do need to lower your standards a bit. So my expectations were along the lines of a powdered eggs and frozen homefries type of breakfast. Lo and behold, you are in for a surprise...picture french toast using brioche bread, quiches that are made from scratch and breakfast paninis cooked to perfection. Oh wait, there is even a full bar with top shelf liquor, a departure board in the restaurant to check on your flight and at the to-go counter, they serve several different flavors of gellato! Wha, wha what? Breakfast is probably the single most under appreciated meal in the airport dining scene, so for a restaurant to blow me away at breakfast, let alone in an airport, is somewhat of an accomplishment in my book. To make it a truly balanced review, I do say that I would have had to have sampled the lunch / dinner menu, but come on, who has all day to spend at an airport, or who really wants to? Bottom line, this addition to the airport is fantastic and I hope it thrives here. Already having Alterra coffee nearly replace all the Starbucks here is also a great change for the better. My pizza was awesome. Way better than I was expecting from an airport restaurant. Pizza here is made essentially in the New Haven style, for those of you pizza freaks...except no coal-fired oven. Anyway, this means the bottom crust is thin and slightly chewy, and the outer crust is thicker and crunchy. I LOVE New Haven pizza and this came pretty damn close. Service was prompt and prices fair. I can't wait to go back for another pizza! read more

Breakfast here is always excellent. The tomato and basil sandwich is good, but they were a bit light on the fresh basil - one leaf per sandwich half. Also, the sandwich was cold? I thought the insides of a panini would be hot, or at least warm? But, as it's very good food, I'll be there again, for sure - especially for the breakfast! read more

Came here with the team for a last lunch in Milwaukee before going home. Most of us ordered the pizza, but I ordered the pesto penne pasta with a side of garlic knots. The garlic knots were dry, I would skip those. The pasta was good, but I would have liked more mushrooms. The service was spotty, but I think there was only 1 waiter. My water stayed empty for a while, and their choices of beers are extremly limited. Overall pretty much what I would expect from an airport restaurant. read more

When in General Mitchell Airport, especially when waiting for an early flight, there aren't that many options, and sit-down-and-they-bring-it-to-you service in an airport is expensive. So bearing that in mind, my breakfast was hot and well-prepared, and the server assisting me was polite, attentive, and kept my coffee cup full. I've got been in the Mitchell airport before an afternoon flight, so I can't speak t their lunch or dinner service. read more

Nonna's is participating in deceitful business practices. When I approached the bar I ordered a Miller Lite Draft, the bartender asked: '16 or 20oz'? Naturally I ordered a 20oz to maximize my airport drinking money. Then I noticed that the price of a 16oz Miller Lite was $4.95 (pretty good price!) but the 20oz was $6.95! This means the consumer is paying more per ounce for the 20oz draft beer than the 16 ounce draft beer. Proof: $4.95 / 16oz = .31/oz ; $6.95 / 20oz = .35/oz. I asked the supervisor why this counter intuitive pricing structure exists and he politely replied "prices are what they are". I suppose a business can charge whatever the consumer is willing to pay but I thought this was the age of business ethics. Oh well! read more

This trip was my first visit to MKE's concourse D and I have to say it is severely lacking in food options. I believe there are three sit down choices, including Johnny Rockets, Usinger's (they share a seating area) and Nonna's. I was waiting on a two hours plane delay and Nonna's seemed the nicest, with it's own restaurant-seating and bar. It's safe to say I wouldn't normally pay $14+tip for a sandwich and soda, so here goes the it's great "for an airport restaurant." The service was attentive but not overbearing and the food was fresh and hot (rosemary potatoes as a side to panini's was a nice touch!). read more

I am writing this two days after I ate there, May 15 at 5:30 PM, I ordered their steak and arugula salad with lemon oil and I am sorry to say, forgot what cheese they had on it, but here it is two days later and I am craving the salad and online looking to see if any of the other Bartolotta restaurants have this. The steak was perfect, $ 22.00's but it was perfect as far as taste and I would order it again. Service was pretty good considering it was packed, no open seats. Had a drink and some soup before catching an evening flight. I hate to bag on these places and all. I get it it's an airport. But a 15 dollar short old fashioned please. I settled on a Coors light instead. Bout half the price. Soup was good tomatoe basil with some parmesan cheese on top. Cup price 5 dollars. All of the food looks good, but I wouldn't know because I've been here for 30 minutes and still haven't gotten my drink. There are only two servers and quite a few tables ( about 30 2-4 tops) so perhaps they need to have better staffing? I ordered a cocktail and it was ok. I asked for tequila with club soda and a splash of lemonade, but I don't think their was any club soda at all. Not a huge deal for me, but not what I asked for. The limes were atrocious, especially for a $12 drink ( I know, I know, airport prices). The server was very pleasant and apologetic about the wait so I dont want to blame it all on her, seems like a management issue to me. Impressive for an airport restaurant. Full bar. Plenty of tables. Menu includes pastas, pizzas, paninis, and chicken/salmon w/ veggies. Reasonable prices for the quality & amount of food you get. I ordered the chicken dish with sauteed spinach & mushroom (can't remember the name on the menu) - the server let me know that this would take about 10-15 mins to cook; chicken was cooked perfectly, sauteed spinach & mushroom were delicious! Overall, a great dish and quite honestly the quality & taste surprised me coming from an airport restaurant's kitchen. My coworker ordered the chicken panini - delicious as well! the roasted potatoes on the side were so flavorful and yummy. read more

Awful experience today at this place. The wait staff didn't seem to have any sense of urgency and we had to quickly get the food to go. When we were getting the food I noted that the chicken salad wasn't right. Also the appetizer had come out early before the rest of the food. The waitress blamed me for not ordering the right salad. We got a partial refund, but honestly this place is awful and I will never return, nor will I recommend it to others. To top it off we had to throw away the pasta dish before getting on plane (uneaten) because it was leaking all over. read more

We stopped here for dinner recently, on our way out of town. It was by far the best airport food we've had, and we travel a fair amount. We split the bucatini with pork ragu and it was very flavorful, as well cooked perfectly al dente. Our server was very friendly, and brought our pasta out already split between two plates for us. Our only complaint was that the pork ragu was distributed unevenly between the two plates, but we took care of that without any issues. If you're at Mitchell and looking for a sit-down meal, it's definitely worth a detour into Concourse D to eat here. read more

This place will rip you off! A colleague and I stopped for dinner here before our flight home. The kitchen was slow, the food was overpriced and underwhelming, and the wine was outrageously expensive. Be warned, they list two glass sizes on the menu. If you don't tell them what size you want they will give you the 8oz glass at ~$20. The menu is intentionally deceptive. Be careful! My wife and I stopped there once our flight got delayed. I'm holding strong on a New Years resolution to lose weight so I was just stopping for the Miller 64. I did get a bit hungry and wanted to look at the menu. With an Italian theme I was not expecting a ton, if any, options for me to choose from. I did settle on the margherita pizza and expecting for it to be covered with cheese and calories. I was absolutely astonished what came out. It was a thin crispy crust with just a little bit of cheese and fresh basil! I was so excited! It was absolutely delicious! I will absolutely be stopping back on my next visit to Mitchell! read more

Excellent food for an airport, but I had an unlucky experience with the service. I had the shrimp penne pasta. I would've given it 2 stars given the service experience, but the surprisingly good food bumps it up to 3 stars. I walked in, and a helpful server, Aaron, said I could just seat myself, so I did. The restaurant was half empty with plenty of servers to go around. Unfortunately, I seemed to pick a bad table, because I look around and no one seems to be bringing me a menu. I wait a little longer, looking around at the idle servers, and no one is coming. Then, I realized, maybe this isn't a full service restaurant... one of those "order at the cashier and wait for your food" places, so I walk up to grab my own menu, and the same helpful server tells me he informed my server and he should be coming. Well, my unhelpful server Craig came by, took my order, and disappeared again. Another server, Brian, attended to me and refilled my glass and brought my food. Both Aaron and Brian checked on me throughout my meal to make sure everything was fine. Craig was no where to be found. When I finished my meal, Craig came back and brought me my check. No refill. But Aaron noticed, and came by. What's the point of keeping Craig around? Beats me, but I would've been a happy camper if only I was lucky enough to sit at anyone else's table. read more

I am always hesitant to grab a bite to eat at airport restaurants because I feel as though they use the fact that the pickings are slim resulting im mediocre service. This was not the case! The gentlemen who waited on us was polite and attentive. The drinks he made were delicious! Maybe one of the best bloody Mary's I have ever had! (Loaded blood Mary with titos vodka and hickory liquid smoke) it tasted like smoked Bbq in a glass! We order the breakfast pizza to split between my husband and I. Plenty enough. The crust was perfectly crisp! The only reason for a 4 instead of 5 star rating is due to the atmosphere.. It's an Italian atmosphere that doesn't necessarily seem fitting for the airport travels. And although the blood Mary was delicious and I'm aware of overpriced cocktails but have to admit that $15 is a bit steep. Otherwise, best choice for our preflight breakfast!! read more

Eating is one of my favorite parts of the travel experience. Similar to not having enough women's restrooms at many venues (you'd think someone would figure that shit out by now) this place was equally disappointing. When people are in an airport, typically they're traveling. Not always, but typically. Knowing that, you'd assume that restaurants have a sense of urgency in helping purple enjoy their meal AND getting to their gate on time. Well, many of us remember from a teacher in our youth "You should never assume because you'll make...." egg-zactly! If I had a dime for every time I heard the server say "Sorry for the wait" to everyone about everything, I'd be able to buy this restaurant. Change your tune or you will continue to lose customers. Hi I just tried to buy something at your restaurant nonna bartollotas at the mke airport on Sunday may 29. There was a woman sitting in a black shirt at a table with a cup of coffee but she was the only one in the restaurant. I didn't want to be presumptive or rude so I walked over and asked if she worked there, and would have been embarrassed if she hadn't. She responded in a very rude tone yes what can I do for you. Like super super rude and sarcastic as if she was upset that I was trying to patronize the restaurant. I asked "are you ok?" Cuz maybe she was having a bad morning. She again repeated super rudely "what can I do for you?!" At this point I was so turned off that I said "nothing if you're going to talk to me in that tone. She started raising her voice rudely with attitude saying "have a nice day" basically with her tone saying "get out of here I'm glad you're leaving" on the way out I said "I was going to buy something but you're giving me attitude, you should get a job you actually want." I then asked her name and she refused to give me her name and said she wouldn't. I asked why she wouldn't give me her name if she thought she was providing good service to which she then loudly said sarcastically "have a nice day" again with the tone of get out of here. I was very offended and told the woman working at the to go counter that the other woman was super rude to me. She heard the end of it and can vouch. I eat out a TON and travel a TON and tip well and am a happy person. This was the rudest I have been treated by a service worker in the past 5 years easily which is why I am taking the time to write this because I think your organization should know how this employee is treating customers in your establishment. She lost you a sale and furthermore I will never patronize any of your establishments unless somebody takes the time and energy to let me know how this was resolved. I'm an energy person and this was very very negative rude energy on an important day for me when all I wanted was to spend money with your business. I had an hour to kill before my flight and I wanted a boozy drink and some food to get me through the afternoon. Despite my disgust with all (the exception being Ristorante) Bartolotta locations, it somehow seemed better than a muffin at starbucks. I sat at the bar, and I asked for a gin and tonic. She offered a double and I agreed. Imagine my shock when I saw a $12.99 cocktail charged for top-shelf gin on my bill at the end of my meal - isn't that something most bartenders would ASK before pouring? I assumed I had a rail cocktail, and am glad I didn't order a second. I asked for a side of caesar salad as the salads listed were all entree portions. My salad came quickly, and I soon understood why... seemed like it'd been pre-made or mis-made and I was the lucky one to be delivered the brown saggy lettuce and warm dressing. It was a ton of hearts so I picked around and quickly gave up. My pizza was delivered quickly after, and it was a decent size. I got the Four Seasons which was described as coming with black olives, mushrooms, artichoke, and prosciutto. I opted for no shrooms. I was very surprised that the pizza had kalamata olives and not black - HUGE flavor difference between the two, black being much milder and kalamata being quite strong. Either way, I prefer kalamata so I was not angry. I ate the pizza, and it was okay... until about 45 minutes later when my chest was on FIRE. This pizza gave me the worst heartburn! On the flight later my mom mentioned she was hungry and I offered her the last of my pizza - mentioned I didn't care too much for it. She ate it - and joined the pain-train for the rest of the afternoon. Prices were WAY to high for the quality of brown lettuce, warm dressing and mis-communicated ingredients. The horrible pain I was in later just topped off the poor experience. Don't "trick" me into ordering something more expensive because you carry an expensive name - not appreciated. read more

I can't comment on the food as it never arrived. I have pretty low expectations for airport restaurants as a business traveler. Often they are short staffed and it is what it is, but this was over the top poor service. After self seating I waited 20 min for a server to finally make eye contact after being repeatedly walk past and ignored. As I looked around the restaurant I was not alone so patience was warranted. I ordered a cheese pizza and proceeded to wait 25 minutes and a gentleman who ordered after me received the exact same pizza. As my flight began to board I had to cancel my order that when I walked past the pizza area appeared to have never been started. When I paid for my $24 glass of mark west I mentioned to the server that they needed help she responded with "I think we are in good shape". I should have walked down the hall to usingers. My advice if you want to eat here give yourself over an hour minimum before your flight. read more
