Love this place. In the heart of Little Italy, San Diego-pretty much under the sign. Valet parking, so don't worry if you're driving. Wonderful atmosphere with superb service and food. Try the gnocchi-pillow soft with amazing pesto. read more

2/17/2025 - Where Caprese Meets Chemistry Went to Nonna's in Little Italy for a cute afternoon day date--and let's just say, the vibes were as fresh as the mozzarella. We grabbed an outdoor table because nothing says "potential soulmate" like sweating slightly in the San Diego sun while trying to eat bruschetta gracefully. Speaking of, that bruschetta? Crunchy, juicy, and 100% worth the tomato avalanche on my lap. The caprese salad came through with creamy mozzarella and basil so fresh I swear it whispered "ciao bella" on the plate. Between bites and awkward flirty eye contact, we people-watched, sipped on some good wine, and debated whether it was too soon to share dessert (it wasn't but we didn't -- leave something for next time). Verdict: Nonna's is the kind of place where a first date can turn into a second--and maybe even into "we have a regular spot now." I've never been to Italy before, but if I had to guess I'd say the food is something similar to here. So delicious and flavorful. My 2 adult kids and I were able to share because the portions are generous. We ordered the ravioli bolognese, pizza and bruschetta. It was the best I've ever eaten. The server was super helpful and attentive, he made suggestions and was kind. Loved the decor inside and how it was an indoor and outdoor restaurant. We will be back for more since we'll be visiting my son in the Navy often. read more

We took my nephew to this place for his birthday. I wouldn`t have picked it out myself, but my mom really wanted to go, so we ended up here on an August Saturday around 4 p.m. for an early dinner. Parking was doable, but I can definitely see it being a problem an hour or so later than we arrived. We did meter parking one street down from the restaurant. If you find meter parking, you are good to go because 2 hours is only $5. We checked in for our reservation(you want one on a weekend or evening because this place does fill up) and at first the hostess tried to sit us at an outside table, in the sun, right by the street. We said no(politely) and that we wanted to sit inside. We waited a few minutes, but we got an inside table. I do wish the inside was not open to the outside because of flies and in August, it is sweaty, but what can ya do? Water was brought quickly. We had our order taken quite quickly as well. Wait wasn't too long for the food or drink. They don`t give you complimentary bread, which is sort of a let down. My mom and nephew both ordered Italian sodas - one peach and one strawberry, I believe. They were good. I ordered a prosecco. Came in a little bottle with a glass. Glass was spotty. Not a big deal, but if you are picky about that stuff, be aware. Food came out within 15 minutes. My mom and I ordered the Rucola salad with salmon. Really good. Salmon was a wee salty, but I didn`t mind. Salad fixings and dressing were really tasty. I would get that again, for sure. My nephew got the Gamberi Fra Diavolo and he said it was good. Finished it all. He is a teenage boy who likes to eat, though., so who knows. It looked appetizing enough. We ordered a Caprese pizza to go. That was quite delicious. Crust was nice and thin, not floppy. The flavor was really nice. Would get that to go in the future. We also visited the desserts counter and took cannoli and zeppoles home. Both were pretty delicious. My mom really enjoyed the cannoli and how crisp the shell was. All in all, an okay time. My one real issue is that they need more staff. We did not have anyone check on us once the entire time we were eating. We had to flag someone down to order the to go pizza and get the check. I think I would get pizza takeout from here and maybe get some dessert, but not worth another sit down dinner for me. read more

Walked in for a light bite and the calamari was the favorite out of the Antipasto Misto. It was perfect for two who do not want to eat too heavy. Definitely a bit of an upscale feel once inside and will return to try their pasta. Service was kind and this place seems great for groups, dates, or any sort of celebrations. read more

No complimentary bread is included. Reportedly, Barbusa is a sister restaurant, and I really recommend that you go there instead for their amazing food. This restaurant had a nice ambiance, and the service was friendly, but the food was just okay. Their housemade marinara is quite good. It seems to have a much creamier flavor and less acidity compared to the usual marinara. The marinara was likely my favorite part of the meal. - Calamari $16.95: Not seasoned enough. You were required to either dip in marinara or add some salt/pepper from the shakers set out on the table. - Bruschetta $11.95: The overwhelming flavor was raw garlic. It needed a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or something to cut the garlic flavor. I couldn't taste the tomato, and I was not sure if it was supermarket quality tomato (and therefore more bland) or if the garlic had just drowned out my ability to taste any other flavors. The eggplant bruschetta at Barbusa was executed much better. - Arancini $13.95: I practically drank the marinara, it was so delicious and creamy. The arancini was fine (crispy exterior, pillowy interior) although surprisingly tepid in temperature. - Gnocco frito $12.95: This was deep fried cheese. I think it would be impossible to dislike such a dish, but it wouldn't necessarily lure me back on future occasions. -Tortelloni funghi $21.95: The sauce was surprisingly watery considering that the dish was served on a large flat plate. However, it was decently creamy with a very very subtle mushroom flavor. The cheese tortelloni was cooked nicely, but (and this is a reading comprehension fail on my part) I had really been hoping for some minced mushroom within the tortellini. There just wasn't enough FUNGHI in the tortelloni funghi. There is a large dessert display case that was irresistible...but I resisted because no prices were displayed anywhere, & I didn't want to risk accidentally purchasing an overpriced cannoli or scoop of gelato. I did street parking about a half mile away after circling around a few times. The parking situation here is really quite terrible. So make sure you aim to show up at least 15 min early compared to your reservation time. read more

I was visiting San Diego for the weekend and I took the trolly ride with my sister and stopped at little Italy for lunch. We were really hungry and didn't know what restaurants were the best but looked on yelp and saw that this was a really good place for Italian food. We got a table for two and they seated us outside which was nice because it eas a good day for it. We were sitting right next to a pole/sign which kind of blocked out view but was a good seat. We ordered a caprese appetizer to share as well as the Pappardelle. These were so good and would definitely come back to eat again. read more

Food was great; our server was rude, rushed, forgetful, and most of the time just missing. Sat at an outside table, had to flag our server down, like 3 times...once for Parmesan cheese he never brought, once for sprite that tasted like soda water that he never replaced and a 3rd time because the bill was wrong. We are not high maintenance people. My 2 sons and husband had the sunday sauce and meatballs, i had the shrimp pasta, we shared focaccia, all delish. Went there with my 2 daughters last night. Food was amazing!!! The pizza was literally the best pizza I've ever had! No kids menu but they let my 11 year old get a 1/2 portion of pasta with meatballs and she said it was incredible; and only charged us half price as well. Highly recommend!!! read more

The service was splendid. We felt well taken care of and attentive to, especially by our server Ana. She checked in if we wanted extra toppings like chilly flakes and how we enjoyed the food. The food itself was amazing, we ordered pappardelle and the chicken parmesan. We were glad to have outdoor seatings too. Additionally, another worker rearranged the umbrella stand on his own so we would have more shade. Thank you! read more

We had an amazing meal- calamari, gnocchi al pesto, and chicken piccata! All was SO good but the marinara sauce for the calamari actually took the cake. It tasted house made and was so creamy! I'd come back solely for the marinara sauce and I don't normally even like marinara! I'm somewhat surprised by the subpar reviews below! What a pleasant surprise this delightful eatery was for our group of about twelve. Appetizers were creative and tasty. My Carbonara was outstanding: fettuccine instead of spaghetti...pancetta, onions and cream...not "classic" but it sure was delicious. For dessert they brought out a massive tray of desserts and treats from their bakery...wow! The service was so friendly and attentive especially with our big crowd. Food: linguine vongole, focaccia, pasta pomodoro, lava cake, crème brûlée. Another delicious meal just like we remembered from one year ago when we came the first time. The lava cake was OUTSTANDING. The best I've ever tasted - better than Roy's Restaurant. This is a must get. It was crazy moist and light and the chocolate inside was extremely high quality gourmet chocolate. Will make sure to get this every time! Service: this time we had a reservation so we sat inside close to the dessert case. Our service was speedy fast! I think we were in and out in like 20 minutes! Wonderful!!!! Each pasta I've tried was actually pretty delicious. The prices are affordable as well. Personal favorite was this short rib parpadelle-- meat was sooo tender and sauce was tasty! The tortellini was sooo good as well with the truffle taste. It was in the Main Street of little Italy so I thought it wouldn't be best quality but everything was 10/10!! Service was great and quick! Came here with a friend for a quick bite, since none of us were very hungry, we got the antipasto misto. The antipasto misto is a good size to share if you have a few people in your group. We only had two people in our party and could not finish it. Their wine by the glass list is very limited, though still has some decent choices. We arrived around 11:30, and it was not too busy, but it quickly became full (with others waiting) once 12:00 hit. We sat inside, where the ambiance is an open floor plan with a rustic vibe. Service can be a little slow, but you still do not get the feeling you are forgotten. I would come back again to try one of their main dishes or some of their many delicious looking desserts. read more

Walked in around 745pm on a weekend and got a table inside right away. Should have been a red flag??? Anyway the Hostess was nice and friendly. Server was straight to the point, not rude but not friendly. Just doing his job and not going above and beyond. The food here is not the vibe for Little Italy- go elsewhere. Doesn't taste homemade and doesn't taste authentic. Caesar salad was over dressed and the dressing tasted straight out of a bottle. Thin, and very vinegary... The pasta dishes were edible, but again nothing to write home about. The final let down was dessert... Canoli didn't have great flavor, crème brûlée didn't hit the spot... I don't know, I've had some amazing Italian food throughout the country and I will never be back here because it's just not anything special very generic tasting. This restaurant was excellent. Service was great, and they made my pasta to order because I was craving vodka pasta and they didn't have it on the menu. We did have to sit at the outside table on the street which does take away from the vibe a bit but the food was worth it. Noticed a line in front of this place growing fast and decided to drop in for dinner. Some of the best Italian food I've ever tried, especially for the price. This place isn't about jacking up prices like most establishments are. They have nice patio seating with secret garden ambiance. Server looked like he likes to eat and provided great recommendations. Definitely try the lasagna, it was amazing. The rigatoni palermitana is really good too, can't beat the sauce. Make sure you leave room for dessert, get the pistachio cannoli as advised by the server. read more

Parking is a challenge. Take a Lyft or park 3 blocks away. The service was nice. The waitstaff were nice and smiled. The food was good but overpriced. The inside of the restaurant was beautiful and the restroom was clean. Enjoy the food Super Mario! read more

Ugh it makes me so upset to even say this because Nonna's used to be one of my favorite Italian restaurants in San Diego. Im not entirely too sure what changed, but it wasn't the same at all. Portion was a lot smaller but the price increased, food was Luke warm, there wasn't really any flavoring. Chunks of raw cold tomatoes. Absolutely loved our entrees and wine! Came in here last minute on a packed night so service was a bit lacking but it had unexpectedly rained which seemed to cause some chaos with outside seating so it was understandable. Forgot to take a photo but we also got the salsiccia pizza which was alright. The crust and sauce were delicious but the sausage was just alright - the flavor was underwhelming. Overall i'd say definitely give this place a try and afterwards pop over to the dessert counter! The pistachio cannoli was phenomenal. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch with a girl friend before she dropped me off at the airport. It was a Tuesday around 11:30 and while parking was not great it wasn't absolute teash, the restaurant was open and we got seated immediately. Drinks and food came out quickly. Service was great. We decided to split a Rucola salad (argula, shaved fennel, carmalized pine nuts, Parmesan, avocado, lemon olive oil) and the fusilli boscaiola (chicken, mushrooms, vodka sauce). Splitting the dishes left us feeling full but not stuffed and bloated. I'd be happy to stop in again for lunch before traveling. read more

If Pasta Could Hug You, This Place Would Walking into this Italian restaurant felt less like entering a business and more like being adopted by a very loving Italian family who insist you eat more. From the second we sat down, the service was so warm and welcoming that I half-expected someone to ask how my nonna is doing (even though I don't have one). The homemade pasta? Life-changing. Each bite tasted like it had been handcrafted with love, patience, and possibly a secret passed down through generations. The pizza had that perfect balance of crispy crust and melty, dreamy cheese that makes you pause mid-conversation just to appreciate it. And the seafood--fresh, flavorful, and clearly not messing around. It tasted like it went straight from the ocean to the plate with a quick stop to be seasoned perfectly. Now let's talk dessert, because WOW. These weren't just desserts, they were grand finales. Not a stranger to visiting Nonna. Came with party of 4 people. We decided to sit outside so we could eat, chat and people watch lol For appetizer we ordered the FOCACCIA Bread to start (yummy) I ordered RIGATONI PALERMITANA and the Sicilian Paloma cocktail . The Rigatoni Palermitana was delicious and flavorful (would recommend ). Also the Sicilian Paloma was surprisingly yummy ( I love a good Paloma and can be judgey on how my Paloma is made lol). so good I ordered a second round. Nonna is definitely a fan favorite of restaurants to try, worth a visit! The only thing I would recommend is having the cocktail menu out. I had to look at the online menu to find it. read more

Our first meal in California. We landed and was starving (especially with the time difference). This was the closest restaurant to our hotel and looks great in the area. We had explore and decided Nonna would be perfect as we wanted comfort food. We were warmly greeted and seated outside (cold) but luckily there was a heating lamp at our table. Only that one side was warm. We had bottle of water on the table while we decided on dinner. Our waiter was kind and recommended a few dishes (Short rib was one of them) and told us about the specials. Lots of yummy options. We all chose pasta with a salad to share. Very yummy. My partner was not offered cheese for his pasta. The manager was mulling about the host stand and looked right at us several times after I had finished my cocktail with no acknowledgement or offer for me to order another drink. So while the food was good the service defiantly left something to be desired. I will say that the server for the table next to us (Melanie/Melody?) seemed lovely and happy to be at work with her table.

The good news: the food is very good and reasonably priced. I have been there multiple times. The bad news: as a solo diner, I requested a table, but was denied even during slow times. I was told I could sit at the bar and order the same food. There were no seats at the bar because fans were watching the Padres baseball game which would be on for at least another hour. I returned several minutes later to see if by some chance there was a seat at the bar, and there was not. Meanwhile, as I was leaving I saw a pretty blonde lady sitting at a table by herself. I asked if she was dining alone, and she said yes! I asked if I could join her, explaining what happened, and she politely declined which is certainly understandable and OK with me. I wished her a nice meal, but could not understand why this attractive blonde was allowed to dine alone there while I was not. I left disappointed and had dinner somewhere else which was very good with larger portions (nearby Petrini's, where I was happily given a table, and this restaurant is rated higher than Nonna's on Yelp). Petrini's was a real find with comparable prices, and I plan to return there instead of Nonna's and maybe bring groups of people as I am affiliated with many groups in San Diego. I was glad I went there and also received a nice thank you for my patronage on the way out. So, Nonna's good food, good prices, bad service. I had been there before and the service was hit or miss. Extremely disappointing. I am from Boston and was invited to Nonna's for my sister-in-law's birthday dinner. The waiter was very cordial and accommodating however, after placing our order and waiting for approximately a half hour they completely forgot to bring our appetizer and brought our entrees. When we explained that we had not received our appetizer yet they brought our meals back to the kitchen and told us that they were for another table and it was a mistake that our appetizers were on their way. After finishing the appetizer the original meals were then served cold, crusty, and dried out. After explaining our discontent to the waiter in regards to my sister-in-law's meal it was taken away and we were told they would make her a fresh one. The meal was then returned to her burnt and even more dried out and crusty than the original. To top it off they completely disregarded the Birthday at the table which was part of the reservation. I had a rather mixed experience at Nonna. Arriving around 5:30pm on a Thursday, before the dinner rush, the seating process was smooth and efficient. However, from there, the experience took a dip. Despite the restaurant not being particularly busy at that time, there were some glaring service issues. I found myself waiting for over 15 minutes to place my order, even as I observed my waitress attending to other guests who had arrived after me. The quick turnaround of our dishes, which I suspect was an attempt to placate my evident displeasure, unfortunately backfired. Both the rigatoni and carbonara came across as rushed: undercooked, tough, and lacking the depth of flavor one would expect from such dishes. On a more positive note, upon reheating the leftovers at home, I found the true potential of Nonna's cooking. The flavors melded well, and the pasta was significantly better. The ambiance was cozy, fitting for a spot like Nonna. But the service experience cast a shadow over what could have been a delightful dinner. With more consistent service and attention to detail, Nonna could truly shine. For now, it remains a place of untapped potential. read more

I love going to Little Italy and always have an amazing experience, but sadly this restaurant left a lot to be desired this time around. I was so disappointed at receiving a cold pizza, and right after being lied to by our server. It turns out they forgot our appetizer, the anti pasto misto, and instead started to bring our food out. We mentioned that we didn't have our appetizer yet and was told by our server that the food was for a different table and our appetizer should be coming out soon. That was a lie since the food was never taken to another table. It took a long time, maybe another 20 minutes, and they finally brought our appetizer out, so by the time our actual entrees came out they were cold. They even told us they would make another dish all over again since it was cold, and they lied again, they reheated it and brought it back a bit burnt. I was extremely disappointed at the quality and temperature of the food, but mostly at being lied to. I did bring this to the attention of our server in hopes they correct this type of behavior. read more

However, my satisfaction took a hit when I received the bill. To my surprise, I was charged twice, $9.95 each, for bringing my own baby food for my 9-month-old. While I understand that some establishments may have corkage fees or charges for outside food, it feels unfair to apply this to baby food. It's not a luxury choice; it's a necessity for parents with young children. I appreciate good service and understand the need for certain policies, but this caught me off guard and left a bit of a bitter taste in an otherwise delightful meal. I hope the restaurant considers revisiting their policy regarding charges for baby food brought in by parents. It would undoubtedly enhance the overall customer experience and make it more family-friendly. Nonna in Little Italy is a true culinary delight and a must-visit if you're in the area! The location is absolutely lovely, right near the iconic Little Italy sign, adding charm to the experience. While the restaurant blends in with the rest of the area, making it easy to miss, it's well worth keeping an eye out for. The seating options include both indoor and outdoor areas; while the inside was busy during our visit, we opted for outdoor seating--and it turned out to be the better choice. With the sunset as a backdrop, the ambiance was magical. We started with the gnocco fritto, which was absolutely to die for--the cheese was so smooth and delightful that we devoured it within minutes of it arriving (no chance for photos). The pollo parmigiana was another standout, easily one of the best dishes I've had in a long time, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The food was outstanding, but what truly made our visit unforgettable was our waiter, Jesus. Jesus was warm, attentive, and had the kind of genuine hospitality that made us feel like family. He knew the menu inside and out, made spot-on recommendations, and had impeccable timing throughout the meal. We randomly stumbled upon this Italian restaurant while exploring Little Italy. Suffice to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch based on the 4 stars we rated it! The pizzas were divine with a flaky crust upon a bed of soft, melty cheese. The tomatoes on the basil pizza were to die for and an explosion of fresh flavors in our mouths. Their pasta dishes were also so unique and made up of fresh, tangy ingredients. The staff were excellent as well and we went based off their recommendations for our dishes. The only downside was the non dairy and gluten free pasta we ordered for my dietary restrictions. There was nothing special about it and it felt rather flat compared to the other dishes. Overall though, a fantastic place and especially worth it for the money you're paying. read more

I was excited to return to Nonna after a great first visit, especially to celebrate my brother's 21st. The food and ambiance were just as good as I remembered, with delicious dishes and a cozy, elevated vibe. Unfortunately, the service really missed the mark this time. Our server, Olga, seemed irritated from the start. Her tone was short, she rolled her eyes a few times, and when we asked about splitting the bill, she dropped some pens on the table and walked away without saying a word. It made the whole experience feel tense and unwelcoming. I understand everyone can have a rough day, but that level of attitude just wasn't called for. My family and I have been coming here for over 7years.. my three son growing up eating in this restaurant. But today that we were waiting for a table, my 5 year old autistic son had a breakdown.. it broke my heart hearing not only people talking about him and the hostess girl right outside but also owner.. hearing them say how to discipline my son and how we as parents dont know how to control him. Heart breaking hearing "my mom would grab the shoe and smack us".. "i would carry him and walk away". May God give you the knowledgeand and not be ignorant. We will not go again. While exploring the Italian neighborhood, I checked out a few nearby restaurants, but none really stood out. However, as soon as I approached Nona, I felt an immediate difference. The service was fantastic--we were seated right away, and our food arrived quickly. I ordered the lasagna, and I have to say, it's now in my top three! My companion had the pepperoni pizza, which was equally impressive. The fresh mozzarella was delicious, and the crust had the perfect balance of thickness and crunch. Every bite was memorable, making it the highlight of our meal. The Penne Bolognese was a letdown, as the meat sauce had a slightly burnt taste. The Burrata was rich, creamy, buttery, and exactly what you'd hope for. The restaurant was very busy, and it took more than 35 minutes for our entrées to arrive. By the time they reached the table, the dishes were only lukewarm, making it seem as though they had been sitting for a while before being served. I can't help but miss the old days. Back then, Buon Appetito felt cozier, with limited indoor seating and the small bar immediately to your right as you walked in. The food and service were consistently exceptional, making every visit feel special. While the restaurant still serves some excellent dishes, I hope it can recapture the warmth and attention to detail that made us fall in love with.

Jacob was our server, he greeted us, told us the specials, and asked if we had questions or would like to start with a drink. We ordered drinks while we decided on dinner. We have a standing rule when there are meatballs on an appetizer menu we have to order them. We are happy we did, they came out in a wonderful sauce, and they were tender and flavorful. As we looked at the menu selections a woman at the table next to us said, "This is the best lasagna I've ever had" and that solidified my wife's choice. I decided on the fettuccine alfredo. While waiting for our entrees, Jacob brought out some amazing bread that seems like it was grilled slightly with butter, it was great while waiting. Our entrees arrived and they looked amazing. The lasagna was beautiful, fresh, cooked to perfection and flavored beautifully. My fettuccine was cooked perfect al dente and obviously tossed in olive oil and garlic before placing it on the sauce. Reading the reviews that say there isn't enough sauce is incorrect in my opinion. The balance of the perfectly cooked pasta, tossed in flavorful oil and garlic allows you to put just the right amount of sauce without losing the other flavors. If you want a large bowl of sauce and some noodle, just go to Olive Garden. We finished the night off with some limoncello cake (amazing) and walked back to our hotel room after everybody wished us a wonderful evening. How could we not go back after that experience? So we did. Once again we made reservations on OpenTable and walked down to Vinarius from our hotel. Jacob and Giuseppe among others recognized us from the previous night and warmly welcomed us. Jacob said he was working a different section, and Paula would be our server. At first we were disappointed, until we met Paula. She was so full of energy and happiness that it was infectious. We started with drinks and this time Caesar salads for an appetizer. You can tell when a salad is fresh, the dressing house made and croutons that definitely didn't come out of a bag. I'm pretty sure they were made in a similar fashion to the bread the night before. Paula, Jacob and the gentleman who refills water were attentive and fun. There was a running joke that my wife could get her water refilled before the gentleman made it to our table. It just made the evening that much more fun. We both ordered the Margarita pizza for our entree. We LOVE pizza, we make it fresh at home and appreciate a great pizza. This pizza was so simple, fresh and perfectly baked. The crust was crisp, soft and flavorful in the middle and topped with a simple tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil. We ordered another limoncello cake and shots to finish off the night. We asked Jacob if anybody there was related, he said no, but they feel like family. That is obvious. We then pulled Giuseppe aside and asked if he was the manager, and he said yes. We told him how great everything from service to the food was. Everybody there is genuine, and wanting to make your experience special and amazing. As we were leaving Giuseppe thanked us again, shook our hands and gave us each a hug. Everybody once again wished us a great night and trip back home the next day.
