I tried their Turkish Coffee...since that's not something I usually can get anywhere else, why not! It was very strong...I mean I like a coffee that can kick my butt so this definitely did the job, especially without any sweetener. (I drink a very strong black coffee every morning and even I had to then add a little sweetener to this one...it was a good experience though!) They've got unique pastry offerings, including savory ones like the Spinach Twist (which is what I had.) So if you're hungry and don't want something sweet, you've got options here, in addition to the sweet pastry offerings. I liked the Spinach Twist and it filled me up with the coffee for another hour or so of mall-wandering. If you want to try an alternative to the major chain coffee places, definitely give KaFean Koffee a try!

The focaccia was fluffy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, not greasy or overly seasoned. The pistachio cream puff was a pleasant surprise. The filling had a rich, authentic nutty flavor and a natural brown-green color, rather than the artificial taste and bright coloring often found in pistachio desserts. The choux pastry itself was light, airy, and moist, which I really enjoyed. The coffee was also quite good and paired nicely with the pastries. I visited on a weekday afternoon and had no trouble finding street parking or a table to enjoy my food. I'll definitely be back to try more items from their bakery case!

What made the grilled cheese unique was that they added a tomato-based jam/salsa of some kind that really added a nice fresh acidity to balance out the cheese. I also want to try their Virginia location since that recently opened as well. I'm also still waiting on their rainbow/chantilly filled croissant because it had to be the best pastry I've ever eaten. The croissant was flakey and crispy, with a nice soft chocolate middle. Ratio of chocolate to bread was perfect and left me satisfied. It paired great with the earthiness of the hojicha latte, which conveniently is made with oat milk! Lots of dairy-free options if you're into that. One disappointment was when the counter person asked me if I wanted room for cream in my coffee, I said yes and asked if they had nondairy products. She said they had almond and soy. I asked for soy and she returned with my drink. When I went to pay, I saw they charged 79 cents for almond, soy and oatmilk. Ok. Here's the thing. I assume it's on the board and I should have looked, but she also could have mentioned it. Also, charging for these items when they put a little in your coffee leaves me feeling like I'm being abused for not being a dairy person. I get it - it's a pastry shop and the items are buttery and rich from cream. But please - 79 cents for a little soy milk? (I know this isn't uncommon for coffee shops, but it doesn't make it right.). And the coffee ($4.25) was decent - not great. I expected better (richer, more flavorful) coffee from a nice pastry shop like this. Anyway, it's a nice neighborhood place and there's a lot of treats there.
