After decades of living in Bellevue, experiences like this remind me of why I don't miss living here. Seattle City Light shuttered their stores, and for good reason. Unlike the 80's or even the 90's you got more choices than Pay N Pak, for home improvement. From Eagle to Lowes and Home Depot, you can find just about all the lighting you would desire. I had about 30 minutes before a medical appointment across the street, so I decided to pull in to see what they offered for outside dusk to dawn lighting. I have three lights that were on my house when I bought it 16 years ago. A very nice-looking light, that I actually found while shopping at Costco about 11 years ago, so I am going to assumed they carried them for years. LED lights don't last forever, and one of the lights is flickering a lot and another is starting to flicker, so I decided it was time to replace all three. I didn't see any lights that met the description, so I asked one of the people up front and he confirmed, they don't keep those lights in stock. What kind of lighting store are you, when you don't keep all kinds of lighting in stock? Truth be told, I think the lighting section at my local Lowes is larger than this store, but if your goal is to put on a glossy show for Bellevue, I don't have faith in your ability to stay in business. He offered to show me lighting online, but I can do that myself and guess what, I'm checking Amazon, before I look at your site. I did see a fixture I liked while I was there, it was a light with a sign for your house number. It was also $1,300. You must be nuts, it was cool looking, but you could put that on sale for $350 and I'm still not buying it. All of this stuff is made overseas and the fact that you are selling it for a 10x markup might make you believe it's worth it, but I suspect contractors that drive up prices and people that believe they are too good for commercial lighting like Home Depot are the ones shopping here. I guess when you are next door to Albert Lee, you can get away with that, but my ex tried to talk me into getting appliances there and I told her, why would I pay $3,500 for a fridge Costco sells for $2,200. Her reply, because the neighbors shop there. I got the fridge and got rid of the girl. Well, only a fool pays retail and regardless of how nice the staff was, I refuse to overpay. I got 3 lights from Amazon for a total of $120. I don't think I saw a single light here for that price and I'd suspect if I returned, which I won't. I'd find the light I bought on Amazon for $40 here for at least $350. read more

Stopped in twice to get one of their salespeople (aka lighting designers). Both times, we provided our list of items we needed and asked them to double check our configurations. Probably $5,000 in fixtures and accessories for a whole house remodel. We gave them a printed list with room by room details. Both times we were told that they would look over the list and get back to us. After a couple days, both times I tried to follow up via telephone. Left messages. Two visits, two calls, no followup from them. I tried. I really did. We had a good experience with them in 2013 on our last project but they are a dried up shell of their former self. read more

While looking for a floor lamp for my place in West Hollywood, I came across North Coast Lighting's website. There are plenty of options on their website, but I wanted some design help and advise. I called the Bellevue, WA showroom and spoke to Texiera. She was wonderful and made me feel like I had all of her attention for just a single lamp. She was knowledgeable and made a few suggestions after asking me questions about my place and my style. I ended up ordering a tripod studio light, which has become a statement piece when people come over. The lamp came in about a week, it was no Amazon prime 2-day delivery, but I'll take the personal attention and expertise over amazon any day. Plus on Amazon it can be hit and miss when you order something that could have been returned. A few months later, my ceiling fan's glass broke. I wasn't sure if North Coast could help me, but I called anyways. They walked me through potential replacement parts and options. I decided to go with a new fan since it was about 10 years old. Texiera recommend a three blade Modern forms fan. When I placed the order I was told it may take up to 4 weeks to receive our fan. We got it in less than a week. Our handy man came and put it together without any problems. I've gotten plenty of compliments on my fan and floor lamp in a short time. I wish they had a showroom in Southern California. I call Texiera because she is an expert when it comes to lighting and she has a background in interior design which I liked. Plus she is patient with my many questions. Where customer service goes to die. Why can't business owners use legitimate feedback from Yelp to improve their customers' experience? We arrived five minutes after opening on a Saturday morning to ensure that we could get help finding sconces for a lighting project in our living room. None of the three employees ever left the front desk area to show us options. More surprisingly, they couldn't answer our questions about comparing lumens and wattage. It was as if they didn't want the business (or perhaps don't welcome individuals who wish to purchase lighting for small projects). About a year ago I happened to be looking for light for a vaulted ceilings. I talked to Tony Kunz at the front desk. He listened to my problem. He found a set of remodel cans that would work perfectly. I shopped around and his prices were very competitive with other online stores. When our project was a go, I called and asked Tony to order the lights. A day or so latter, Tony called and said the lights were not available for some time. He then found some lights that would work for our project. They looked even better. I had Tony order them and they got shipped to my door within 3 days. They look outstanding for our application. We ended up with one defective light out of 16 we installed. I called Tony about the problem. He has the problem solved in two phone calls. His attention to customer service is TOP NOTCH. Purchased a large number of sconces and fixtures at the showroom. the staff there is helpful and polite. The selection is the best for high end lighting in Bellevue. So why the rating of 1 star. As with the reviewer Eric M. the nightmare starts after the purchase at the store. They have a new policy that customers have to pick up all merchandise in the Warehouse before this you picked items up in the store and it was a decent shopping experience if overpriced. But the Warehouse is another story. I ordered a single very expensive cabinet handle for $36. They said it had to ship from the manufactuer in LA. I thought nothing of it at the time. Six weeks later they called me saying it was in the Warehouse. I spent the next hour trying to find the warehouse which is very artfully concealed in a series of warehouses with separate drive ways and the only sign was for North Coast Electric - which is a different company in a different warehouse strip. The warehouse has no sign except a very small one over the door Even when you know where it is you can't find it - they make no effort at all to allow customers to find it seeming content to make that as hard as possible - its like they worked to conceal it. So I go in and three people are crowded in a waiting room so small that you its like you are in an elevator with the other customers. they were ALL complaining that they couldn't find the place and while waiting the single staff guy fielded two calls from lost customers who were also trying to find the warehouse. Then half an hour later when they finally finished with the poor guys in front of me (couldn't find their stuff, spent forever looking through unfiiled papers), they told me that I owed $18 freight. The handle weighed maybe three ounces, took six weeks to get here from LA, they made me come to their Warehouse to pick it up and then wanted to charge me half the price of the handle fro the privilege of spending an hour picking it up from their warehouse!!!! Even the warehouse guy was embarssed so after half an hour more on the phone they waived the frieght charge. I will never go back there again. Its a nightmare! read more

I had an excellent experience at North Coast Lighting. Their staff is helpful and friendly from the showroom in Bellevue to the Warehouse - which is about 2 miles away. The lighting is reasonably priced, and the people were very helpful. I expected to go into a lighting design store and pay 3X what I did. I actually expected to only go in for design ideas, but I ended up purchasing two beautiful fixtures. With verbal directions (they asked if I needed them written down) and GPS it was very easy to find. Its by the Ballet company and it is indeed in a group of warehouses but I did not find it hidden. I was willing to drive the two miles to the warehouse, if thats the reason I saved so much. I loved that they carry much more than your everyday, big box store designs. There are some very cool and different designs for living/bathroom/dining/outdoor and I found the prices, even on the outrageous designs that I wish I had a space for, to be very reasonable. Sure, there are some very high end pieces, but for the most part its very reasonable. read more

I found the North Coast Lighting website and saw lots of great light fixtures, but there was so many it was impossible for me to decide. So I called the Bellevue showroom and was fortunate to speak with Texiera. She was very kind and extremely knowledgeable. She had me take pictures of the dining area and send them to her and she was able to pick out the perfect light for me. Within a week of our first conversation, I had a beautiful new light! I special ordered light fixtures at the cost of $25,000.00 for my exterior. North Coast Lighting was well aware these fixtures were going on the exterior when I purchased them. The lights fell apart and dropped to the ground 3 times. North Coast lighting's manufacturer Meyda fixed the lights those 3 times. On the fourth failure North Coast Lighting told me these lights should not be outside and told me the only solution is to purchase the same fixtures to replace the original ones. WHAT? When I tried to discuss some kind of compensation for their part in what they say was an error to purchase these lights for the exterior, North Coast Lighting had their Los Angeles attorney email me to say they would not do anything. No customer service. Buyers be aware there are better lighting stores. read more

If "lighting is the jewelry of your home" then North Coast Lighting is Tiffany's (with better prices). My husband and I walked in with a photo of a gorgeous chandelier we saw at a boutique hotel (but couldn't afford) and their sales staff pulled out catalogues to help us find a perfect (and affordable!) knock-off. Most sales people wouldn't take the time to help you spend less! Thank you for your help Cara (and her coworker with the red hair)! Shipping was free, the chandelier arrived on our doorstep less than two weeks later, and now my dining room makes people say "wow!". I am writing this mainly because what I went through over the last year may save someone some time and money. About a year ago, I made a very large order from this store. Our sales person, Chris Austin, was very helpful and I had no complaints. Don't get me wrong. I really like this store.. I have found some nice things there. The saga began after most of the lighting, and the two fans had been installed. All three speeds on one of the fans worked, and I realized after several months that only the lowest speed worked on the other ceiling fan. (It was not high on my priority list as I had recently moved, and there was a bunch of other chaos going on in my life.) So, eventually I got around to calling NCL and a woman told me that I would have to find an electrician to repair it. So, I called my electrician. He said, can you find the manual? Of course, I could not. So, I went to North Coast lighting and someone there printed off the manual for me. Without even looking at the manual, my electrician eventually decided that he had no idea how to repair it. So, I eventually called the manufacturer, Casablanca, and they told me that the fan was no longer under warrantee. I begged. They wouldn't budge. Then I called NCL back. Chris answered the phone. He at least tried calling the manufacturer on my behalf. They still wouldn't budge. However he did come up with the name of an electrician in the area who carries Casablanca parts and some ideas as to what could be wrong with it. I called the Casablanca electrician, MGM Electronics at (253) 752-9826. He happened to be in the area and came the same day. He simply pulled the chain on the fan which changed the speed of the fan so that the wall switch could read all three speeds... and it worked. So, if your Casablanca fan doesn't work on all three speeds, try climbing up on a ladder and pulling the chain. I thought it would be nice if NCL at least covered the trip charge. No one has offered to so far. I also thought it would be nice if someone at NCL knew a bit more about the products they sell. read more

Jeff helped me out and he was beyond helpful and knowledgeable and answered all my questions about lighting. Nice showroom and decent number of options to select from. Price seemed very competitive with what you could find on-line, but of course you can see an example first which is really helpful. Customer service? Not so great. In store, I initially got a rude response for not making an appointment, and then got help but little in the way of value add (helping me coordinate fixtures, for example) and was seated down with a pile of catalogs. After the order was placed, very low transparency on the status of order, multiple phone calls for follow-up, one order was never placed, and it took longer than I would have expected. Feedback: customers typically find value in a showroom because they are having a hard time navigating the gazillion options on-line, and might be ready to pay more for that service. But it has to come with really exceptional customer service. That would be both in the storeroom (help me - I'm not a designer!) and on the ordering/fulfillment front. read more

Great customer service from Jason Karel, Chrissy Anderson and the North Coast team. We did a 'to the studs' remodel of a 3100 square feet. They provided excellent lighting design recommendations and service including CAD drawings for the electrical contractor. All of the recessed and surface fixtures were delivered promptly. Pros: Good selection, friendly staff (for the most part), decent prices. Cons: Lack of follow-up, will-call pickup at different location I purchased two exterior garage lights which had to be custom ordered from the manufacturer. I was told to expect a call when they arrived at the warehouse. About 3 weeks went by and nothing......I finally called the store to get an update and was told an associate would check on the order and call me back. Couple of days go by and nothing so I call again. I was able to get an associate to check while I was on the phone and voila, it had arrived! I drove to the warehouse and was surprised (not really) to find out the order had been there for a while. No matter, all is good now, I have my lights. Not so fast.....I get home only to discover that one of them has a large scratch....back to the store. This part of the process went fairly smoothly, they took the damaged light and ordered a replacement, no problem. Once more I was told to expect a call when it arrived.....not falling for that again. I let a few days pass before calling to find out that it had shipped and was due to arrive by the end of the week, yeah! End of the week comes, I call to confirm it has arrived and was told they would have to check and call me back......sigh.....I asked for the tracking number hoping to avoid the run around......you guessed it.....they will have to call back. I'm super impressed with North Coast Lighting. Their customer service is exceptional. I placed a large order via amazon. Prior to placing the order, I called customer service. They helped me determine the right lighting components for my application. When Amazon said my order had been delivered but I had only received half of it, they investigated immediately, followed up quickly, and advised me the remaining items would be delivered later in the day. Everything arrived perfectly. When my electrician arrived to install them, I learned he had previously wired the rooms for low voltage lighting (due to a miss-communication on my part). So the line voltage lighting I ordered from North Coast would not work. I submitted a return request through Amazon and North Coast approved it within minutes. I called customer service and asked if I could personally return the items (I live in the Seattle area) and they gave me the option of either shipping it back or dropping it off. They were very gracious about the situation considering the return was due to my miss-communication. I need several fixtures for my upper floor in the near future and will definitely shop North Coast lighting. A big shout-out to both Ladd and Ryan who helped with placing and returning the items. read more

I ordered a chandelier from North Coast Lighting via Amazon. It turned out to be a discontinued item, and the last one they had in their inventory was hanging in their showroom. They sold me the chandelier at a 40% discount and shipped it out right away. After receiving the chandelier, it wasn't what i expected and I decided to return it. I felt bad returning it after all the effort taken to remove it from their showroom, box it up and ship it out. But Ladd was very gracious and responsive. He immediately contacted the shipping company for the return. I wasn't charged for the shipping or for a restocking fee. The customer service was outstanding. We're going to keep our old chandelier for now, but when we're in the market for lighting again, I'll try North Coast first. read more
