By far, the best market/bodega in the area, including on San Pablo in Emeryville! Staff is always super friendly, but my favorite thing about it is that it has a lot of really Great products. Great wine selection, tons of natural drinks, and beverages that I want like kombucha or cold pressed juices, there's also a meat market and lots of cold beer. They always have everything I want in a pinch when I don't want to have to go to a bigger store and the prices are very reasonable. UPDATED REVIEW: I've gone to this place for a long while. It's normally good. One major issue came up, but thankfully, the kind people are the store found a solution so things can be better. North Side Supermarket has limited parking nearby. at the left section is an entire fresh meat counter. at the center back is the beers and refrigerated goods. there's probably wine in the aisles. not sure if hard liquor is available. didn't look. in the center are snacks, convenience items and groceries. at the front order there may be cigs. didn't look. drink: "Allagash white" belgian style wheat beer (4.50 with tax/deposit) 5.2% ALC. -didn't see many kinds of six packs, singles just a dozen or so. limited choice. -not liking this kind of belgium beer. maybe it's the coriander and curacao orange peel additions.... -didn't see many known brands of beers in singles area. doubtful repeat... read more

This little market has what every corner store traditionally carries a meat counter, fresh produce, a decent amount of basic essentials, and of course a litter of conventional spirits. The workers are generally friendly and the front counter accepts everyday tender. My favorite part of the store is the meat market. Bring cash, debit or EBT only. This is not where you go for organic or cage-free or free-range, there's no grass fed or prime cuts, this is chock full of conventional poultry (chicken and turkey), and pork and beef that's generally frozen or nearly frozen. They make low-end sandwiches which have things uncommon to most California delis, like spicy hog head cheese, hot links, liverwurst, and bologna. No frills, but if you need a fix of neck bones, pig feet, or salt pork stop here. They even have meat packages at reduced prices. read more

Disregard reviews from 2008. For context, in 2008 Obama had just been elected POTUS and the housing bubble had just burst. That being said, it's 2022 and you gotta LOVE this place. It's got solid selection of basic food items as well as beer and liqueur. Staff is super friendly and is not only respectful but respected by the community. Now the best part...The butcher? Amazing! Seriously, it's always busy and there's good reason. They carry chicken, turkey, pork and beef for like half what fancy places charge. I've had lots of cuts and varieties and never had a bad experience. I'd wager they move through stock faster than Whole foods does. lastly, their sandos for $6 are the best. Hella simple (in the best way) and always hit the spot. They just raised the price from $5. Amazing. Love it! I live nearby and North side is much preferred to the Hoodstar Pak N' Save on San Pablo. I've been a long time customer of this store bc I want to support local businesses, despite their being wildly overpriced. Unfortunately they don't show the same concern towards customers. Only a few days ago I spent $90 on their BBQ package, yet today their security guard began yelling at me for sitting in front of the store for less than 5 min bc I was feeling faint after riding my bike there, where I planned to shop and buy all my groceries. Instead, I was humiliated in front of my girlfriend for being a disabled person who needed to sit down for 5 min before beginning my shopping. Never going back there again! read more

They have a number of vegan items that make this a handy nearby market for quick grocery runs for our vegan household. We often get Hodu tofu, hummus and carrots, veggie burgers, kombucha, vegan chili beans. If you live in the neighborhood and just need that one ingredient to make your meal complete (or ran out of onions at the wrong time), it's well worth checking here before going all the way to Safeway or Berkeley Bowl - they just might have what you're missing. Although I'm from Fremont, I was in the area on Friday for an event. Being that it was pretty warm outside, my friend and I went inside for a drink. We each grabbed a bottle of water. Once at the register, my friend realized that he left his wallet in the car. So I said to the clerk: "I'll put the bottles back in the refrigerator and we'll pay for them when we come back with his wallet.". The clerk then replied with something to the effect of: "Don't worry about it, it's hot outside. You can have them.". Y'know I thought we (Southerners) were funny but the reviews on Yelp are so odd... This is the best corner stores I've seen in Oakland by far. They're owned by the same people who own the laundromat, so whenever you have an issue over there you can simply cross the street and problem is solved. They have a pretty decent selection albeit at "convenience prices". They have a meat market that makes a okay 2.50 sandwich, that becomes pretty good when you realised you've got 15minutes till the bus comes and no lunch to take to work or school. One of the clerks gave me grief about buying beer until I got a California ID but everyone's friendly. The owners listened when I asked for soda that has plain sugar in it, so if you see a Mexican Pepsi/Coke/7up, then you're welcome ^-^ Also alot of Oakland corner stores confuse me, they're in places where there are low-income people, starving artists and students, and yet most of them don't take food stamps. But this store does. As far as the "element" goes. I repeat: I thought Southerners were funny but hey if POC make your nervous than maybe you should not be in Oakland. My fave story is the woman who assumed I was going to ask her for change because I was standing outside of the store, I was waiting for a ride. Two days later we're at the laundromat across the street and we discover we're both from Suburbs of the Deep South, Prep school/ college grads who are down our luck. What's this? One star for the fact that after 7 years of hoping... the beer selection FINALLY offered something besides 40 ozs., King Cobra and Bud Light. 2007 marked the year they offered Fat Tire & Sierra Nevada. What took them so long?! Beer, booze, cigarettes, blunt wraps, testosterone drinks and garbage snacks are pretty much all they really have to offer. Obviously, the epitome of ghetto offerings seems to never wear thin outside the Northside. Just ask the sidewalk strewn with a trail leftovers. The place is huge and packed with packaged crap. But, shelf Life isn't exactly taken seriously here, either. It's not really a food market unless you live off of expired Hamburger Helper and Top Ramen. Or you need an MSG blast from Doritos. It's true, too, that there's a crows nest, rifle lookout right above the front door and not to mention the young, miserable looking boy doomed to a life servicing drug dealers and alcoholics all day. This place needs to clean up BIG TIME. Sketchy dudes, coke dealing, boom cars... somehow always granted passage. Kinda puts a damper on a changing environment. What year are we in? What neighborhood is this? Although: The meat market is run & owned by a separate family, who are very nice, granted that meat is some shifty looking stuff. Is the chicken supposed to be yellow? The super basic 'sub' sandwich is good for hangovers or hot weather sustenance. It's cheap, fast and like I said, they are nice folks. Northside Market, what can I say? Well its a whole lot better then it use to be. They have re-modeled the place in the last year or so and it is so much easier on the eyes now. And yes, they have finally gotten rid of that make shift guard booth they use to have right above the entrance to the store and removed the "old guy" and have install security cameras instead. Still a lot of shady people scramblin around but in all reality there are a lot of shady people everywhere you go, don't fool yourself in to think that there's not. I have always liked the fact that big city's like Oakland have corner markets that make it easier & convenient for the community to go to the corner market and get something quick. Now I didn't say cheap cuz these corner markets tend to be high priced. Of course always an abundance of beer, liquor, cigarettes, swishers, and loud talking people. There is a meat market in the back of the store, which offers various meat packages for fairly decent prices. When you buy a meat package they usually throw in a free bag of potatoes about 6-8 potatoes which helps out anyone in these trying times. Anyway, if you ain't from around there and you're not use to the big city tude you better know how to get your game face on if you need to go to this corner market especially at night and even more so on Friday & Saturday especially during the summer. read more

One hot October weekday, I'm off from work and need a little milk for my cereal. Cooper goes on the leash, and I head out to the North Side, the little market I've driven by a hundred times. En route, I'm stopped by a hoodlum in a beater who asks me if I had a boyfriend. "Yup," I say, move on. In the store, some other guy asks me to give him a birthday hug, and even shows me his license to prove it's not a bogus request. On a separate occasion, somebody asks if I wanna buy some "purple," and, especially since I don't know what that is (pot, right?), I respectfully decline. On the plus side, North Side has super-friendly staff and a full meat counter. It has major issues with expiration dates, though, so purchase your milk warily. And if you're a girl, I wouldn't recommend walking here without some serious attitude, a pit bull, or both. read more

Solid little corner mart around the corner from my house. The folks who run it are really nice, and they have some fundamental pantry and fresh food items for those days when you forget something at the grocery store but you don't want to make the special trip out to your local grocer's again. The produce isn't top notch (it's a corner market after all), but it works in a pinch! They also have standard beers for late night runs; nothin' fancy, just what you'd expect from a corner mart. If you have a problem with the locals because perhaps you are scared of black folks (as in they "makes me a little nervous" and "At least she doesn't ask for change, right?"... seriously?!), or you think this is some sort of risque "'hood" experience, then do yourself (and me, and my neighbors) a favor and just go somewhere else. read more

If you like basic types of meat and poultry, this place is for you. I'm sick of going to a meat market that has less than quality products. I gave this place a try several times and they usually don't have what I want. The steaks are whack, the rib selection is poor. And I can never get everything I want(seafood, poultry besides CHICKEN,other types of pork and steak that is not paper thin!) I have vowed to myself to find a better meat market that carries all types of meats, not just chicken and pork. People in this area also like other things you know. They need to step it up. I guess my standards are too high for this place, sorry but I do have to eat it. They are lucky to get one star. read more

A good stop when you're too buzzed to drive (bike or car) to Pac n' Save. 3 stars for the convenience. NOT for the overpriced junk they sell there. The meat looks like it has been from a pig or cow when Clinton was in his 1st term. One good thing is that you can buy a bottle of Barefoot wine for a buck more than other places. Oh- 2 good things.
