I have been here many times for the holiday pop ups and sandwiches in the past. My daughter even got engaged during the holidays here. Recently we have been there 2 weeks in a row. We went the 1st week for Friday fish since they have beer battered, my husband loved it, I found mine to be a bit greasy along with the fries in a puddle of grease. The fried mushrooms were delicious with the homemade ranch. While there we saw a lot of delicious pizzas and knew we needed to come back to try. In the past I have just had whatever was served on the pop up buffet, which was great. So we had to try one of the specialty ones. We opted for the one it has pesto, vodka and marinara sauce and it did not disappoint. We both ate a couple pieces and we still felt like we took 10 lbs of pizza home. It reheated great in the air fryer too. We will be back for more pizza!!!!!!!!! read more

3.5 stars! I had heard that North Star has good pizza from a fellow yelp elite and wanted to check it out! It's right off an exit on 22 and took me about 20 min from the West end of pittsburgh. Not much of a building in winter, with the entrance almost unrecognizable, but there is a mini golf course and tiki bar so I'm sure it's always bumping in summer! The service was fast but the noise level was kind of high for 5:45 on Friday night. The server was kind but she could barely hear us... We ordered 12 wings with their "hot sauce" and a Detroit pizza with pepperoni. The wings were good - not too small and well cooked. I really liked the sauce. The Detroit pizza was topped with a ton of pepperoni (which is good since it was $4 for it as a topping!!!). My biggest complaint was the temperature of the pizza and the greasiness. I know that comes with the territory of Detroit-style but the center of the pizza was warm but not hot and the crust was greasy. Overall I'd give the pizza like a 6/10. Middle of the road. I FINALLY found myself passing by after 4pm, their opening time, so I stopped in for a beer. The Tiki Bar catches the eye right away, some tables with eager diners, and A few people at the bar. As all four frozen concoctions were stone empty, I opted for a Miller Light...bottles only. With nothing to hold my interest at the tiny bar, I asked if I could take my beer inside so I could check it out. Oddly, the whole inside bar was closed this day. Guess there's no point on Tuesdays?? I wandered over to a picnic table and sat down, finding myself next to a...pond? Small. Zero running water, and a shade of green comparable to president trump's failed reflecting pool. Hmmm, I thought, given the proliferation of West Nile-infected mosquitoes around this year, non-moving green water seems a REALLY bad idea. I noticed an orange thing in the water which I thought might be a koi eager to move the water around, but sadly, after 15 minutes of no movement., I had to concede that it was either just an orange thing, or, at best, a koi somehow in suspended animation. I chose not to get closer. There were 2 bartenders, both young, blonde and pretty. A prerequisite for working here? Both were friendly, though. And $5 seemed somewhat high, but I-guess that's for the ambience of the green non-moving pool. Just... less than I'd hoped for. I won't try again. read more

Stopped in for an early dinner on a Wednesday around 4 when they opened. There weren't many diners at first, but by 5pm the place was pretty busy. The inside of the restaurant is nicely renovated with exposed brick and kind of an elevated industrial vibe. The two ladies working were very friendly and prompt with bringing drinks and taking our order. The food came out quickly and hot. The sandwiches were massive. The rolls are thick and toasted. I had to use a fork and knife for the cutlet sandwich because it was just too big to bite! The margherita pizza was the star, honestly, and unexpectedly. The crust was thinner and crispy. The cheese and sauce had great flavor and the fresh basil leaves added a good pop. Will def be back. Beers on draft were $6, also! Great deals here.. very fair prices. read more

If you are going for the ambiance of the traditional pop up, they've got one of the best with multiple photo ops and tons of space for the little ones to run around. The food for the brunch was not that great and while we were there, they never refilled anything when it ran out so we all got one plate. We ate inside the main restaurant, not the pop up and I enjoyed the atmosphere better than I think I would have enjoyed the pop up. Much quieter, fireplace ambiance was warm and cozy. We stopped by for their Christmas pop-up bar, and wow, they go all out! There was a 40 minute wait for dinner, but they had another bar decorated for the holidays that we could have a drink in while we waited for our table. While they were out of some of the holiday beers there, they had some other festive drinks available. Every single area of the walls and ceiling are covered with ornaments and lights in the restaurant area! There was a very family-friendly vibe (at dinner time at least), which was great for us bringing our infant to dinner. Like a Mini Vacay @northstar_tikihut Imperial, PA ~ 30 mins from PGH Go on mini vacation just 30 minutes from the Burgh when you visit North Star Tiki Hut. This is such a fun, kitschy little spot with tons of outdoor seating, sand, faux palm trees, corn hole, & more! It's always a blast here I think their Detroit style pizza is the bomb. Light & fluffy & they don't skimp on the toppings. We went with the white pizza but added pepperoni for the best of both worlds. Ngl, the cocktails are not my favorite, they're just super sweet with artificial ingredients (hello neon red strawberry Marg) but...the price is right & I can always opt for a classic tequila & club soda or crown & Diet Coke rather than cocktails. The overall experience is more than worth it imo! P.S. they have amazing pop-up bars for the holidays here as well! read more

We stumbled upon North Star Restaurant while looking for a place to mini golf, and we are sure glad we did! Currently, restaurants in Allegheny County are only permitted to offer socially distant, outdoor dining. North Star has the PERFECT patio - beachy vibes with an outdoor bar and both covered and uncovered seating. We sat under the pavilion, and we were happy with our decision because it was quite hot! We decided to order a few smaller items from the menu to share. We went with a half Philly cheesesteak, a small traditional pizza, and French fries with cheese. The cheesesteak was enormous with toppings to the brim! It was my favorite part of the meal. The pizza was also good, but we didn't receive it until at least halfway through our meal (we ending up taking most of it home). My only complaint was the service. I understand that most restaurants are currently understaffed due to COVID, but our waitress spent most of her time chatting with two customers on the other side of the patio. She only visited our table a few times, and she was not there to refill our waters when necessary. read more

I've been going to the North Star Tiki Hut for roughly 10 years and it's never been as bad as it is this year. It was once an enjoyable place to go with family, but it's now shifted to an overpriced, gimmick contrivance. The seasonal pop-ups? They were once fun. Now it's force to eat from the buffet or no seating at tables, even if there are many open tables. I'm unsure who really wants to pay that price for a buffet that's essentially served outside in a plywood shed. If the owners get back to the basics, I'm sure they can improve guest experience while still making profit. I'll even accept the $10-12 dollar mixed drinks. I don't take any joy writing a negative review, but you should know before you go. read more

Bad service. Uniformed slow and young staff. Not very personable. Owner sits there and doesn't do much of anything. Clear some damn PAPER plates and refill drinks !!!! Pizza is ok. Wings are ok. I'd stay away from all else. No draft beer. Frozen drinks are very low level. In fact they are terrible. Worse that slushies at a beer store. I'd stay away. Came on a Saturday evening around 7pm. This was one of the first places I have been since being vaccinated and not masking and did feel safe. There are tables at the tiki hut area for you to sit with your group of any size but the staff was very great about sanitizing tables. I was last here a few years ago and the expansion is great. Very Beachy, great for families and also just to get out as an adult. Prices were reasonable especially during everything right now. Service was FANTASTIC. Very fast and very friendly. Couldn't be happier! A few cons, mostly as a person who hasn't dined our in over a year - the silverware on the tables and the paper menus. I woild have preferred New Silverware untouched as well as a plastic menu that could be wiped down. The women's bathroom also could use some work. All in all a nice night out, so happy to be outside and will be back hopefully! read more

Let me start off by saying that the Detroit style pizza gets 5 stars. It is fabulous. Crunchy crust, gooey toppings, everything that you would want in a pizza. I've gotten it 2 or 3 times and loved it. Tonight, however, I decided to try some new things, and I really didn't like them at all, unfortunately. I got cheese fries to start. The cheese sauce is from a bag or can, which I was kind of expecting. The fries themselves have potential to be very good, but they were pretty severely undercooked and unseasoned. I could have easily scarfed this down if the fries were cooked and seasoned properly. I got the Italian hoagie as well. It didn't have a lot of meat on it and didn't seem to be baked as the menu stated. Now that I think of it, I don't remember any cheese at all. I also asked for extra dressing (I love sauce and dressing and am happy to pay for extra) and our server said that they weren't doing substitutions or deletions. Asking for extra dressing is neither a substitution nor a deletion. My friend got the chicken salad. It was a 4/10 at best but it was also not appetizing. We ate about 25% of the food. Our server seemed confused when we said we were done, but she didn't ask if we didn't like our food, if we would like something else, etc. I KNOW the restaurant industry continues to suffer, but this is just basic customer service. I waitressed in the past, and I go out to eat A LOT, so I know how customers should be treated. At the end of the night, we ended up paying (before tip) $50 for 2 cans of beer, 2 rum and cokes, and a few bites of very bad food. I will come back here for the pizza and nice outdoor atmosphere, but that's about it. I hate to leave a bad review, but maybe management will be able to improve things. read more

Very mixed opinions. Came here for dinner and a few drinks with the girls. I ordered the chicken Philly and I really liked it. I wanted a chicken salad but I didn't want to pay 16 dollars for that! I made my first trip to the North Star. I had the western burger and fries. My wife had a half of a sub. Both portions were quite large and tasty. We both enjoyed our meals! Service was very good. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Restaurant isn't much to look at. Interesting draft beer selections as there isn't any domestic options. Definitely a solid option if you like bar food. I'll definitely return to try the wings and tiki hut when the weather breaks. read more

The food isnt great but the drinks and service are terrible. i thought maybe the halloween/ Xmas drinks were just bad bc they're pre made but then I ordered a simple vodka ginger ale and it was equally as bad and tasted off. Visited for the very popular Christmas pop up bar. Checked in with the host he informed us it was a 30-40 minute wait he took our cell phone number and told us we could wait at the inside bar. No big deal we went to the inside bar and enjoyed 2 rounds of drinks. They were running a Christmas pop up drink menu we ordered 2 different drinks off of the menu both were good but pricey and in a very small cup ( $11.68 per drink). 2 rounds of drinks for a party of 3 came to just short of 50 dollars not really a big deal it was a very festive Christmas environment. After about 45 minutes we got the text our table was ready. Went over to the Christmas pop up bar in the tented in outdoor area the place was a full house, very busy. We were seated and our waitress Alane J came promptly and took our drink order. She asked us if we were eating I said yes we'll see some menus. She informed us it was buffet only for the Christmas pop up. Mind you no where was this advertised. We let her know that one of the people in our party had celiacs disease and a buffet wasn't gonna work for us but we would enjoy a few drinks. Alane J came back promptly with our drinks. A few minutes later the host who was wearing a grinch costume (very fitting for what happened next) came to our table and stated that the table was reserved for guests who are eating and asked if we could move to the bar. I took a quick scan of the room around us and noted 2 things. One the bar was completely full, no open seats. I also noted there was no one eating food at any of the tables around us, it was all adults with drinks. Odd because since it was a buffet no one should have been waiting for their food to be brought to them but no one in the immediate vicinity had full or empty plates on their table but we were told the tables were reserved for people who were eating. I explained to the host that we weren't aware it was a buffet and it was not advertised. He fired back with "It's been that way for 3 years!" I said well this is our first time here for the Christmas pop up. I then informed him that my mother walks with a cane and the bar is full and asked him where he would like us to go. I then said we waited 45 minutes for this table and have gotten 3 rounds of drinks and spent nearly 80 dollars. He said I'm sorry you have to move. Alane J our waitress walked by shortly after this I asked her for the tab and told her that the host came by and told us we had to move. At the same time a man was walking by she flagged him over and stated he was one of the owners talk to him about it. At this point there really was nothing more that I wanted other than my tab so we could leave. I explained what happened to him and he walked off. Still here we are waiting for our tab. I flagged down Alane J again and said I still don't have my tab. She rudely responded with give me a few minutes. She came back about 10 minutes later with our tab. Long story short we waited about 45 minutes for a table bought 3 rounds of drinks at roughly 23 dollars a round for 3 people to be treated poorly. We were asked to vacate our table even after I informed the grinch my mother had mobility issues. Will not return to this establishment again. This may have been the first visit to the Christmas pop up but I used to visit frequently during the warmer months when out and about on my motorcycle. read more

Cheap bar food. Over priced. Poor service. None of us were impressed with what we had ordered and our server couldn't be bothered with having to wait on us. Only 3 of the 5 of us ordered food due to the menu not having almost anything vegetarian. (Totally fine that they didn't, but the website says - great vegetarian spot, and it's just not set up that way.) I had asked if they could just leave the meat out of a hoagie and they were not able to accommodate and said sorry they come as they are on the menu. My stepsons had a steak hoagie and a chicken sandwich. There was 1 slice of steak on the hoagie, it was all bread. The chicken sandwich was bland and a bit raw. They both said- it was just ok but I wouldn't get it again and wouldn't come back. Then at the end of our meal, we waited for over 20 min for our waitress to take our card. My husband even went up to the bar and offered to pay there but they would not take it and said our server is in the bathroom. (You can't make this up! ) If you want to go here for a beer and sit outside, with a few people, you may have a totally different experience. Ours was bad enough to not go back. I've been to a lot of places and this, I believe, is only my second poor experience. My suggestion is for this place to reevaluate the customer experience and look at how your staff functions amongst the customers. read more

Food is excellent and the service is good / Friendly and prices are reasonable. The toasted Italian Hoagie is excellent and my favorite along with their pizza . I've heard lore of this magical footlong sandwich. It's called the Penn Lincoln or Penn Lincy as we affectionately call it. There's fries and a special kind of sauce on her that really separates it from the silly regular sandwiches out there. It's truly a fabulous experience.
