Well ... I really hate to post bad reviews...but when you are a regular at a restaurant and have given them a LOT of $$$ and are treated as badly as we were, you would not be happy. Called in and talked to Trish ... Asked if we could get a seat near the fireplace around 6:30pm. Trish said that shouldn't be a problem ...and said "the later the better" I said ok great, I'll call back and confirm. I called back 5 minutes later and said we'll be there at 6:45, she said "Great see you then". Showed up at 6:50 with a new business partner and was told "sorry we can't seat you near the fireplace and you'll have to wait 30 minutes." I asked the young boy at the host stand if Trish was there and he said yes ... I told him she had agreed on having us in at 6:45. All of this is just bad ... But what happened next was what brought this review. The young man came back and said Trish said "I never told him that"! You embarrassed me in front of a new business partner ... I went with my best friend! We both got burgers. She got the Gearhead and I got the Gunslinger. I loved all the fresh jalapeños mine came with. If you don't like spicy I would not recommend this one for you. But the burgers were thick and delicious. The fries were also good. The staff was very nice. My husband and I bought a just pay half coupon for this restaurant and decided to use it this past weekend. I have been here one other time but this was my husband's first experience and he is a tough food critic. There was no wait to be seated and our waitress appeared quickly to take our drink order. Nothing fancy for drinks, water and Diet Coke. There was music playing from a tv; oldies and my husband knew a lot of the songs. He seemed to enjoy this a lot. We decided on the spinach dip appetizer which was delicious; served with fried pita bread. I ordered the Cobb salad with chicken and he ordered a specialty burger with fries. The portions are huge. Had the pleasure of going here for the first time for Valentines Day. We had a group of 4 and sat in Jefferson Room. Nice private room with just us 4 so it was nice to be able to talk and visit. We had: 1-Mussels-they were good, it was a creamy Borbon sauce, think I like the garlic sauce better 1- Fried Risotto Balls-very good 2- Filets that were excellent and cooked perfectly 1- blackened Salmon, very good 1- crabcake-best I've had in PA (comparable to Ocean City , MD). Desserts we had Chocolate Cake and Tiramisu - both EXCELLENT Staff was very busy, working hard running around but was still very friendly. My sister and I tried Brick and Barrel for the first time tonight! The building itself has a cute and quaint historic charm to it. It kind of reminded me of the Downtown Charleston area restaurants (minus the beach/bay). It was the perfect night to sit outside on their patio (if only I could have a glass of wine, lol). I'm happy to say we did not leave hungry! We shared the large pretzel with beer cheese to start. We both followed that with burgers and specialty fries. My sister enjoyed a couple new cocktails outside our usual box( I'm jealous, haha). I'll definitely have to stop back post-delivery for the Caramel Bourbon . The restaurant is beautiful!! I can't wait to come back and sit on the patio. The server we had was lovely. She was very attentive and quick to clear plates. Additionally, she refilled glasses swiftly as well. I appreciated that. The food was insanely good. I joked that it was too good the be located in the suburbs. No one had complaints about the food. I'm already craving the food again, and I went to dinner yesterday lol. The one negative I could think of is that there wasn't a lot of people in the restaurant, yet the food took a long time. We had a groupon for $20 off our meal. First off, none of the entrees had prices noted on the menu. To avoid appearing "tacky and cheap" we did not inquire -- our fault. We both got the crab cake dinner with two sides. Can't be that much -- maybe $30/each? Well, 2 dinners with 2 pepsi's = $100.00!!! While the crab cakes were small, they were delicious; the green beans/mushrooms were wilted and cold and the mashed potatoes were dry; the mac and cheese was like boxed Velveeta. Although the atmosphere was nice. So take off $20 for the groupon, and the bill was $80; plus a $20 tip so we are back to $100. Definitely didn't want to spend $42.00 each on a dinner. If you go there, just get the pizza, or even soup or salad or both. You'll be much more satisfied. read more

Yeah this is an easy call for five stars. We thought the food was super good. I got a margharita pizza with pepperoni and spicy sauce and it was amazing. My wife got a chicken salad and my son the burger with bacon jam. Everything was tasty and the service was good. I visited Brick & Barrel Cross Keys for the first time during Pittsburgh Restaurant Week, and despite its immense popularity, I was seated immediately--no wait at all. That alone was a great start. I ordered The Barnyard Burger, their specialty duck fat fries, and what a bourbon hot chocolate from their seasonal special drinks menu. Simply put, this was the best burger I have ever had. Everything about it--from the quality of the meat to the toppings and the way it was cooked--was phenomenal. I enjoyed it so much that I returned just a week later to try another burger, The Gunslinger, along with regular fries and the Spinach Artichoke Dip appetizer. Once again, I was not disappointed--the flavors were outstanding, and everything was cooked to perfection. Of all the restaurants I visited during Restaurant Week, this was by far the best experience. The food was great, the service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere, an experience all on its own, really made it stand out, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I hosted a an annual Christmas party here and the space was pretty good for the 22 people we had. It is upstairs so it is not handicap accessible for this private room. We ordered a buffet style catering, and everything turned out good except for the chicken marsala and the chicken piccata, they taste exactly the same. The sauce was too water down. They provided one waitress and although she did a good job, the group was not getting drinks fast enough. I had made this reservation for months prior but the food was no prepare in a timely fashion. There was also a confusing about the room rental and the deposit, but it was all taken care of at the end. The space was nicely decorated for Christmas, which made my job a little easier, and the staff that I encountered was very friendly. read more

Brick and Barrel restaurant is located inside an old house that has a really lovely appearance and atmosphere. The current menu lists appetizers such as French onion soup, spinach artichoke dip, wings, and salads; entrees such as burgers, pizzas, salmon, and chicken; and sides such as duck-fat fries and bourbon-bacon cheese fries. The menu also has an extensive list of alcoholic drinks. Please see my attached photos for the menus. On a Saturday afternoon, my husband and I stopped by to eat lunch. We stood at a hostess stand for a few minutes until an employee noticed us. I felt thankful that tables were available. Our waitress was very timely and polite throughout the service, and she brought us drink refills. Here are my reviews for our foods: Short-rib poutine - $16 - 4 stars - The French fries were crispy and were covered in a flavorful gravy and some cheese curd. The short rib tasted good but could have been more tender and shredded more. Surf 'n turf - $41 - 4 stars - The filet mignon was small and looked to be approximately 4 ounces, and it was cooked medium as I had requested. The crab cake was a decent size and contained a decent amount of crab meat. My sides were mashed potatoes and my choice of brussels sprouts. Pittbull pizza - $19 - 4 stars - This pizza had six slices, and its meat toppings were ham, sausage, bacon, and pepperoni. My husband ate this pizza and described it as "good." Cozy place in a house type atmosphere. The bourbon selection is good. The food is also well prepared. Waitress asked our names and remembered them correctly which is surprising given how uncommon mine is pronounced. My snobbiness is about French onion soup as usual- theirs is sherry forward.... not something I usually look for, I like spices. Parking is haphazard and is on a dark street. It's also pricey with the lowest alcoholic drink $8.50 (beer) $10 (wine) and goes up and up. Finally, the waitress was a bit difficult about our bill (we had two waitresses, as we asked for our tab one said our meal&drinks were paid for by the group and another chased us down us as we were leaving and was super uncomfortable and embarrassing). Stopped here for dinner as family - there were six of us - and overall enjoyed the meal. They They have an extensive bourbon list and a variety of cocktails using said bourbon. So, if that's your thing, look no further! They also have a good menu, which they add some specials to as well. We tried two of their pizzas: a nice crust with a variety of options for toppings. We also tried some of their sandwiches: filet, motherclucker, mushroom burger, and delbene. All good, but I think the motherclucker was the standout. It was a really nice piece of breaded chicken paired well with the chipotle-lime sauce and served with hot and crispy french fries. Their outdoor patio is nice and service was good. B&B takes the top seat in the best al fresco dining experiences. I have only ever ate outside here, and loved every minute of enjoying the sunset by the fountain, flowers, firepit, and hanging lights. It's not just for looks, though. though the menu makes for a tough decision, I didn't regret ordering the Dark Forest pizza which was loaded and fed me for a few days! The drinks, also plenty to choose from, are fun and uniquely crafted with unconventional flavor combinations, although they disappear quick. There is something for everyone here. I make a point to stop here when in the area, or before a concert at Hartwood Acres. What a gem! read more

Along Dorseyville Road in the Fox Chapel area sits the beautiful old Cross Keys inn, dating back to 1850. It's a beautiful setting for Brick & Barrel Cross Keys-a casual but upscale American restaurant with creative twists on classic pizza and burgers. They also advertise an extensive collection of bourbons, and they do not disappoint. Upon entering, there is a cozy small bar to the left with exposed brick and lanterns on the walls. The bourbon collection helps decorate with a huge and sparkling display. To the right is a small dining area with the first of a few fireplaces that make Brick & Barrel the perfect stop on a chilly evening. The main dining room sits in the back with a pretty view of the trees and patio outside. There are private rooms upstairs. We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. Todd had an Old Fashioned with a recommended mid-priced bourbon. It was pretty and warm and satisfying on the cold and snowy evening. I had a classic martini, just the right dry for me. The sandwiches were delicious. Todd had the "Mother Clucker", a fried chicken sandwich with pepper jack, bacon jam and a surprising chipotle lime aioli. The flavors really complimented each other. The fries were beer battered , crisp and hot. I enjoyed the Shrooming Burger. It was a perfect medium with truffled mushrooms, Swiss cheese and horseradish aioli. The sandwich and sides prices reflect the upscale part of "casual and upscale" but weren't unreasonable for the creativity and quality. Entree selections are market price and include chops, steaks, salmon and crab cakes. While the weather is still cold and dreary, make a point to try Brick & Barrel, Cross Keys. Great first experience at Brick and Barrel! This a historic building in Fox Chapel that has been renovated into a cozy restaurant. It was a nice night, so we were very lucky to sit outside on their cute patio! This is a hidden gem! We started with the spinach and artichoke dip that my parents raved about. They were right - it was heavy and creamy. Such a treat. I would definitely order this again. I had the dry rose and my dad enjoyed his Old Fashioned. There are not a lot of vegetarian or pescatarian options on the menu (besides all of the pizzas of course). I went with the mussels appetizer as my meal. They were in a bourbon cream sauce and I thought that was really unique for mussels. OMG they were great. The little pita points to dip in it are fried I think. It was so rich! The star of the dinner was the side of mushroom risotto my mom got with her chicken dish. Highly recommend! The waitress asked if she wanted spinach, cheese, or mushroom in the risotto. I suggested mushroom since I knew her chicken came in a leek sauce. There was definitely truffles in the risotto too. We all raved about it. My parents also said they are known for their burgers. We got dessert and the cannoli cake was good, but not amazing. The skyliner cake had white and chocolate cream and was a huge slice. However ours had a weird taste like cologne. There was some chemical taste that we couldn't get past. It was not good. Overall we had a nice outdoor dinner here. The restaurant was very busy even on a Wednesday. We went using a Groupon. the meal was worth what we spent using the Groupon but I would definitely not go there and pay full price. THey were out of the first three or four items I wanted. When I asked for another item, the srver thought they had it but came back to say that they had just sold their last one. I looked at the menu again and decided on a pizza that supposedly had wild mushrooms. Since I have been mushrooming for decades, I asked the server about they type of wild mushrooms. It took her a couple of trips to the kitchen but it turned out that the "wild" mushrooms were button mushrooms from Phillips. When I got my pizza, they were clearly your basic Agaricus bisporus-the mushrooms you can get cheap at any supermarket. My pizza was otherwise fairly good with a crisp crust. However my husband's pizza was unevenly heated in their pizza oven such that one half was undercooked. read more

They are learning restaurant manners and everyone was so nice there and treated them like little adults. They also had coloring placemats and the hugest kids meal pizzas you've ever seen! Maybe the pizzas are good but the table next to us complained. No plan to return especially for the prices. Came here last night for a birthday dinner. We had a private room upstairs which was actually very nice and good amount of privacy! I love how they had a little of everything on the menu. Half of our party got the twin filets and the other half got pizza! We started with a pretzel (my favorite), the short rib poutine and fried risotto balls. All empty plates within minutes. I got the ceasar side salad and "The Pittbull Pizza." Both good but I could only get through 2 1/2 pieces of the pizza so I did bring the rest home. I discovered this place due to coworkers and has lead to two excellent meals. The staff was beyond nice, and did a great job of answering questions and being friendly even though they were clearly busy. The short rib poutine is worth the trip alone. It boarder on almost being too salty, but I thought this was excellent. The short rib is tasty and tender, and the French fries are the best I've ever had. They have a light crunchiness on the outside and are just really light on the inside. The artichoke and spinach dip was excellent. They don't skimp on the artichoke or spinach, and they serve it with fried pita that match up very well. The fried risotto balls were also tasty, but I think it was outshined by the actual risotto I had served with a steak. The giant pretzel was a pleasant surprise as while it's pretty large, it wasn't as heavy as it appears. They also served it with a generous portion of cheese, which I think most pretzel fans can appreciate. The chicken wings were cooked nicely, were a decent size, and the meat was juicy and tasty under nicely fried skin. The Mac and cheese can be served as an app or a side, and they offer add-ons like bacon, short rib, and I believe crab. That was a table favorite as it was creamy, the pasta was nicely cooked, and it avoided that salty flavor that Mac and cheese can sometimes have. The fondue burger was cooked perfectly and tasted great. I felt like the bun wasn't a good match when I saw it, but when I bit into it, the bun was pretty light and matched well with the burger and cheese. We shared some pizza (The little Miss Figgy and Garden of Eden), and we all enjoyed those. They are decent sized pizza served on a thin crust, and while I don't think I'd go here just for pizza, we felt like they're solid menu items that none of us would be disappointed on. The steak of the week was a NY Strip, and they cooked it to a nice medium rare and seated the outside perfectly. It came with roasted asparagus that was tasty, and a bacon risotto that has been as good as any risotto I've ever had. I tried some of the pork chop and it was easily the most tender chop I've had. It came out grilled nicely, seasoned well, and was served with a chutney that went very well with it. The only thing that wasn't perfect was my Wife ordering a chocolate lava cake. The bottom of the cake got burned, but everything outside of the bottom was great and it definitely hasn't cancelled out all of the good food and good service. The building itself is also pretty interesting as it was built in 1850 and used to be an inn. When you walk inside and head towards the host podium, they have a wooden board attached to the wall holding old keys and that was something neat to see. I'd recommend this place any time and definitely hope to go back again sometime soon. read more
