Definitely not my cup of tea. We bowed up in 8 got a table and had to decide what to get as you have to order at the cash register and take a number. They have a selection noddle bowls and soups and fried rice and other Chinese fare. The food came out fairly fast. I would say the vegetable dishes were the best. The chicken in the dishes have the skin on which might be tradistiinal but not to my tasting. Fairly busy in a Sunday night but again not my cup of tea and likely next time will go to eureka next door. $65 for 4. read more

Been here a few times now and the flavors are just... really tame here. The beef rolls are always rolled haphazardly and lacks sauce. It's about 70% greens and 30% beef and they come out kind of cold every time I order it. Green beans were pretty standard, probably the standout dish. Garlic pork ribs didn't have much meat to them and taste was very simple. I was scooping up the garnish just to get some more flavor in my mouth. Surprised they don't give rice with these entree orders, but it's pretty much a quick service location so I guess not your typical Chinese restaurant expectations. Probably will end up coming back again just because of convenience and there are slim pickings in Irvine to begin with. read more

Yummy food for a good price! We ordered the mala premium beef noodle soup, Yangzhou fried rice, and fatty beef with scallion. Big portions for all orders. Order at the counter and then go find a table. The ambiance is okay, everything is self service (water, extra bowls, utensils, napkins, take out containers). The mala premium beef noodle soup was very flavorful and spicy. The noodle texture was bouncy and chewy. I like to add the dumpling sauce provided on the table to balance out the spice and add more vinegary flavor. The Yangzhou fried rice is seasoned and made well. A reliable order every time. The fatty beef with scallion could have more fatty beef and less scallions. Seems overscallioned, but still tastes good. Overall, would recommend and return to this restaurant for the good food and fair pricing. read more

It was the best, and the worst. This was the first time visiting for us, so let me get the one complaint out of the way. Entering, someone pointed at a table, but No waiter approached us and we figured from the sticker taped to the table you had to scan a code to read the menu, so we did. No one explained that we have to also order through our phone. We had to ask someone, who then brought one paper menu for two people. I have to say I really, really dislike this type of service. I've experienced it one other time with a different corporate chain restaurant. I'm sad to see this is another restaurant chain that has adopted the same impersonal style. It's a pain in the butt to scroll through my phone to look at a menu, and feels devaluing and soulless. Part of a dining experience for me is thumbing through a menu that explains what's in the dishes, and makes them more enticing. This scrolling through your phone thing is the last thing I want to do when I go to dine out. I want to put my phone away and to have a dining experience. It feels very impersonal, and it was. There was no way to make any adjustments to any items, and even the items that contain peanuts said "cannot be made without peanuts". This is a major problem especially for people have allergies. Spicy items said "can only be made spicy". I get the drift. Nothing to bung up the cogs in the assembly line behind the curtain. A restaurant that can't make adjustments to suit their patrons? Hmmm. First time I've ever seen this. That said, The food came out quickly after we ordered on our phone, brought by more impersonal waiters. No one ever seemed to smile or ask how we were. Everything was delicious, however. The hot and sour soup had a tremendous, deep, rich and complex broth with egg and black mushroom. It was spicy and not too sour. It was so dark and complex it tasted like it was made with beef broth, though it said it is "veggie". Yum! Then, the scallion pancake, fabulous! Crispy and onion-y, probably the best scallion pancake I've had since my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco 30 years ago. It was that good. Then came out the pork with fennel pan fried dumplings. They were a simple and delicate masterpiece. The fennel flavor came through perfectly. Sometimes fennel can be overwhelming, but not here. They were delicious and meaty. Lastly, we had the sweet and sour pork ribs. They were in a sweet and sour red sticky sauce, with tons of garlic! Super delicious, though they were very bony. Just be careful of little shards of bone so you don't break a tooth or swallow it. So, would I go back? Yes, I think. Now that I know you have to order everything on your phone, like buying something from Amazon and I shouldn't expect a friendly waiter to greet me, it will be easier, but still impersonal. Something I noticed was that waiters were much more friendly and engaging and even spoken Chinese to customers who appeared Asian. From reading a little blurb about the ownership of this restaurant chain, I learned that's been intentional. If I go there again, I will need to resign myself; but wait, doesn't that mean giving up? Yes, it's a battle I know I won't win. Great food. But terrible impression to leave on a first time patron. Enjoy. read more

I visited Northern Cafe, which is located at UTC in Irvine and is tucked on the side of the plaza! I was thrilled to see that they had two of my favorite Chinese dishes - beef wraps and dumplings! I tried out their juicy lamb dumplings and I gotta say, they were not joking about how juicy it is! The dumpling is filled with some soup and it actually exploded onto my shirt lol! I also liked the beef wraps but I think there was too much green onion for my liking. The waiter was also super friendly. I would definitely revisit. read more

If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese cuisine, look no further than this place. We frequently visit the location on the other side of Irvine (and love it!), but wanted to try this location since it was bigger and the menu was slightly different. We ordered our regular favorites from the other location (stir fried rice cakes with chicken, sautéed bok choy, pan-fried dumplings, pork soup dumplings), and have to say it is consistent at each restaurant...which is a good thing! Everything was delicious. We also ordered the spicy shrimp wontons in chili sauce, steamed egg custard buns and steamed mango buns and they were delicious as well. Different from the other location, you order your food from a kiosk and pay in advance and they will bring everything to your table. The only thing I didn't like is that the kiosk asked for a tip in advance. Other than that, excellent food and service as always. read more

Overall, it can be a bit confusing for first-timers as you pick your seat and then walk up to order. The service is good and the food is delicious. I usually go for the chicken with chili peppers or the lamb with cumin plus an order of dumplings. Definitelty a spot that can satisfy a number of cravings. read more

I came here on a rainy day with a large group. Northern Cafe is located right next to UC Irvine in a plaza, so it's expected to be pretty busy. On a weekday night, we had no wait for such a large group which was great. The restaurant is mainly self-serve, meaning self-seating, self-ordering, self-water stations, and self-serve togo boxes. You grab a seat, head over to the front at the cashier to place your order and pay, then head back to your seat and wait for your food to be brought to your table. It's a different serving style than other Northern Cafe locations I've been to, but probably because it gets so busy with university students coming by so often. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, and it came out within 5-10 minutes of me ordering it which was one of the fastest I've seen. It had a really generous portion, and lots more meat at the bottom of the bowl which I wasn't able to finish because it was such a large portion. The noodles were well done and chewy. It says it's 'mild spice' but wasn't really spicy and just had a small kick which was perfect for my liking. I really enjoyed this and for the price ($12-13) and fast service, I'd say it was pretty worth. Their menu is pretty expansive, from dumplings to noodles to even hot pots and desserts. For the prices at a university it's pretty standard, and honestly one of the better food options with sit-down dining at the plaza. Would recommend if you're looking to have some authentic Chinese comfort food around campus! read more

A great pick anytime you're in the mood for Chinese food in Irvine! Not too formal or fancy, it's more casual actually. The restaurant is beautiful inside and very cozy and welcoming. It's sit down, but you have to actually go and order at the counter before sitting down. It's next to UCI so most of the crowd here are largely students. Food comes out fast and efficiently after you order. Service is friendly and helpful when you ask for anything but it feels more self serve as you get up to grab your own water, napkins, to go boxes, etc. We tried the Szechuan hot pot, beef roll wrap, big chicken plate with noodle, and beef noodle soup. The flavor of the spicy broth in the Szechuan was good and spicy enough to make you sweat. The beef roll is crispy and beef was tender. Chicken plate had a large portion of good as expected and we needed to go boxes to finish. Overall a great experience! So happy to have an authentic Chinese restaurant close by. read more

Such a nice lunch spot when in irvine! They offer dumplings, noodles, rice dishes and hot spot. The service was great and they are very efficient here! Food came out quick regardless of how busy they are! My favorite dishes were the garlic pork and eggplant! The XLB were good too! If you plan on ordering noodles, def try out the Dan Dan noodles! So yummy and filling! Had the perfect amount of sauce. You order at the register, they give you a number and deliver your food to the table. We went on a Saturday lunch time and it was really busy! so i'm an EATER and i was like, "oh pft, these portions can't be that huge..." upon ordering a beef noodle soup, shrimp friend noodles, and spicy wontons; i was already STUFFED with just the beef noodle soup. as someone who typically can eat a bowl of noodles, there was a LOT to get through. all i'm saying is, the portions are not a joke. for my fellow college students, this place is definitely worth the price for the amount and value you're getting. i wouldn't have finished it if i didn't like it! also the lady working the front was very nice and the self seating was interesting but convenient. read more

This is a delicious Chinese restaurant right next to UCI to get all your Chinese food cravings without going far off campus! I love that it's a modern feel food court style as in you pay for the food first and take a number and don't need to pay tip! You get your own water and your own utensils if necessary too. Also appreciate that there is never a long wait every time I'm here as it is a big restaurant with many tables! Lots of yummy dishes to choose from! Definitely a comforting food kind of restaurant. Coming back to try hot pot and other dishes but so far it's pretty good and reasonably priced without all the crazy crowdedness of other dumpling restaurants in OC. read more

Pretty good food. I have only ever ordered through DoorDash and it always satisfies my Chinese food cravings. I recommend their dumplings, wontons and dessert buns. Noodles with chicken- 4/5 noodles were super thick and had good flavor Wontons in chili sauce- 5/5 these taste the same as din tai fungs chili wontons, yum yum yum Juicy pork dumplings- 5/5 juicy, perfect dumplings Orange chicken- 4/5 needed more sauce BBQ pork buns- 2/5 I wouldn't get these again, not like the typical pork buns I was expecting Red bean buns- 5/5 loved these! Custard buns- 4/5 these were good but not as good as the red bean buns Only downside to northern cafe is that they don't provide utensils or toss in a side of rice with your order. Lots of seating. The waiter will seat you but you will order at the counter and pay first. They will serve your food to your table. There is a huge parking lot so that was not an issue. The hot pot was delicious. I liked the meat balls and tofu selection. There are also glass noodles at the bottom of the pot. They give you rice with the dish. The cucumber salad was okay. I wished it had more vinegar taste. The pork wonton in spicy sauce was not good. It has a large cabbage inside that overtook the flavor. Would not order again. The dumplings were good but nothing unique. It's not a bad option. I would want to come back to try other items on their menu. read more

Would recommend for a casual dining with friends and family. Got the beef spicy pot, Thai fusion pot, chongqing crispy chicken, and garlic pork ribs and didn't have any big complaints about any of the dishes and would get again. My top 2 of them were the Thai fusion pot and the garlic pork ribs. The Thai fusion had a unique lemon zest that mixed well with all the seafood in it. The garlic pork ribs had a strong savory flavor with the garlic and green onion as well as being juicy and crispy. Service was quick with serving the food and a little more self serve in general with other aspect such as water and paying at a register which I kinda liked for a more casual dining experience. read more

Joshua is consistently a machine of excellent service every time we come here. He manages to be everywhere at once keeping all things flowing smoothly. My kid choked a little bit on a bite they didn't chew well enough and within seconds he was at the table with a fresh cup of water. He is superb. Also the food is great. And the broth was rather salty. The spicy hot pot was actually good because it really comes with sliced angus beef. I thought would be the same kind of beef for this golden hot pot but nope, totally different. 4 stars for the spicy hot pot and bbq pork buns. 3 stars for the pork wontons. We ordered stir fried string beans, orange chicken, crispy beef, and salt and pepper fish filet. My least favorite was the crispy beef, mostly because it didn't even taste like I was eating much. I probably should have gotten a different beef dish, otherwise everything else was pretty good. They have a robot delivering food to the tables. They do have someone at the front desk area if you have any questions or need hot water for teas.

No one wants to sit at a tiny table in the middle of the aisle when there isn't even enough space to comfortably fit four dishes. We are not complaining simply because we were given a smaller table. The issue is the obvious inconsistency in how the seating was handled. If there is a legitimate seating policy, it should be applied consistently to everyone--not selectively depending on who the customer is.

The Northern Cafe I came to today is right next to UCI. We can have stir-fried dishes, pasta and hot pot, so six of us ordered a large table of dishes. The four big snacks are in the first 100s, and they are also packed. The portions are really sufficient and cost-effective. Although it is a fast food restaurant, the quality is authentic, the food is served super fast, and you can eat it for $20 per person. The service was also very good. Today, my family came to this Chinese restaurant to spend the weekend, and man, it was delicious, just like the real deal Chinese food we used to have back in China. The Cold Skin Noodles, the Golden Soup Beef Hot Pot, and the Spicy Chicken were spot on! Every dish was so generous, like, one plate of chow mein and you're stuffed. And the prices? Super reasonable!
