Northgate is a good place to come to if you need Latino foods. They have everything from tamal supplies to Argentinean yerba mate. This is not the best Northgate in terms of size though. I do not really like their fruit section. Their pears for example can be small, ugly looking and not half as tasty as at Ralph's. They don't necessarily have deals on things like cilantro and Mexican limes which you can likely get cheaper at Food 4 Less. The pan dulce is pretty good here and getting it here can save you an extra trip to an actual panaderia. The rotisserie chicken is not as good as it used to be but it still has a good price. The thing I like most about Northgate is the fact they sell thinly sliced chicken breasts for a very good price. You cannot find this at Food 4 Less and they are soooo much more expensive at Ralph's it's not even funny. What I don't like is that the last time I went the packages were runny beyond belief and I got my hands all sticky with chicken juice. There was no way to check the packages without getting it all over my fingers. When I got to the cashier she didn't have anything on hand to wipe my hands with. What a mess! Northgate is a fiesta! They always play good rancheras, which are Mexican traditional tunes. They are like mariachi music but with far more emphasis on the singing. Parking can be hell but usually, if you are patient you can eventually find a spot in front of the market. The lines at the cashier are usually long. Others call this place Gonzalez Market because it says so under the Northgate sign. Confusing but either way, this place has great mexican food selection. Their produce section is pretty good and very affordable. Comparable to the price I'd get from H Mart except of course their selection is geared more for hispanic cooking. They have a pastry area towards the East side of the store, together with the fresh produce section. Drinks and chips are more towards the middle, meat section is on the West side. You'll also find their Carniceria in the same section. I say, get the chicharon in prepacked bags, cook it in green salsa and add some veggies if you want. Or you can eat it with tortillas. I came her for one thing... Creomulsion. It is the most vile cough syrup you can think of, but it works. A co-worker told me they had it, so I trekked on over because this sinus infection is killing me. Anyhow, I've been to other Northgate markets and they all seem to be the same. I like that I can come here for my Hispanic food items that I can't find at Ralph's or Stater Brothers. You know, the specialized stuff Abuelita tells you about. For this visit, I was saddened to find that they didn't have my Creomulsion when I looked for it. Not to waste a trip, I noticed they had some amazing looking carnitas in the deli section. I took 2 lbs. home. And since I was there, I opted to check out the fruit. One thing I have noticed is that fruit and spices are way cheaper at places like Northgate. I've paid upward of $1 a lime at traditional chain stores. Here, you can get 2 lbs. of limes for $1. So, I have my carnitas, I have my fruit, I get to the checkout and lo and behold I see it. The beloved "all of the good stuff" cabinet. You know the one. It's in front of the store... under lock and key. You know, the meds, the booze. And there it is... my beloved foul-smelling Creomulsion. I buy my items and I'm off to stop my cough and stuff my face full of pork. Heh heh... PS: For those wondering, Creomulsion smells like a mix of melted tires and motor oil. But the results are worth it. read more

This is the store where you will find all those yummy Mexican items, that if you're Mexican they are a must have...you will find a wide selection of fresh produce and fruits that are at peak and super fresh. From their carniceria where you are sure to find many fresh cuts of meat especially their carne asada to their bakery where they have fresh pan dulce and bolillos throughout the day you can't go wrong with a visit to this store. When it comes to fresh fish, I do my shopping at 99 Ranch Market. When it comes to fresh meat, I go to Stater Bros or Costco. When it comes to fresh produce, I shop at Northgate Gonzalez Super Market in Pico Rivera (but I also like Amapola Market in Downey and Super King in Los Angeles & Anaheim). The fresh fruits and vegetables at Northgate are excellent in both price and quality. When it comes to staples like onions, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, apples, summer fruits, etc., Northgate can save you a lot of money over the course of months or years. And Northgate carries an extensive and diverse selection of fresh veggies for a comparatively smaller market--stuff like Brussel sprouts, leeks, and all kinds of fresh herbs, all at reasonable prices. If you don't do much home cooking, this might not be a big deal, but for those of us who do it's a very big consideration. Their bakery is also quite good. We've ordered our share of tres leches birthday cakes over the years, and have never been disappointed. Oh, and check out the Northgate house brand tortilla strips (always on display near the west entrance). Dirt cheap, and very good! read more

This particular Northgate Market has back to back traffic inside & out! With that being said, it is worth the wait in the Deli section if you have to take a ticket & wait for your number to be called in order to get your food for take out. They have a variety of pre made dishes, meats, seafood, salsas & other goodies that are all tasty & seasoned just right. This particular location seems to be a lil older & smaller then the other ones I've been into. The regular lines are fast, all checkers opened. Your wait is mostly in the Deli section. The Bakery is also smaller then other locations but all the Desserts are Delicious! Prices are reasonable on everything! I LOVE THERE RICE PUDDING!!! read more

I came to this Northgate Market because they will prepare tamale masa with Grapeseed Oil. We wanted to be a little healthier this Christmas season. I came in about a week before I needed the masa to order it. I was a little concerned because I speak Spanglish but the guy I was trying to speak to in Spanish was quick to let me know he spoke English. I ordered the masa and was told I had to first buy the oil and then give it to them. I bought 4 one liter bottles. Prior to picking up my order they called me to confirm. When I arrived it was ready. They only used 2 of the bottles of oil so I was able to return the other two and get a refund. The masa was excellent and the tamales came out delicious. Everyone I interacted with was so kind, helpful and friendly. I will be back!!! read more

This is a busy but very authentic Mexican grocery store. The employees are friendly and seem to try to help. Most are bilingual. Love the deli have used it many times. Very rude employees at this market. I don't know how the poor people in the local area put up with this treatment. Im sure the managers at this store put up with the behavior because they are also rude and not concerned with customer service. Employees wander about the store and no one asks you if you need assistance. The store is dirty and the produce is definitely past its peak. Employees at the back of the store are hanging out joking while the floor next to the dairy products is dirty and sticky. We tried to get service at the bakery dept. but no one even made eye contact. I finally had enough and forced the young guy behind the counter to talk to me. He said I had to wait for the lady. WTF is going on here! Then they make you stand in the grocery line to pay and bring the receipt back to the bakery. Good luck trying to get someone to take the receipt. Im not sure what the problem is because they have plenty of employees in the back by the sewer smell talking about their weekend and flirting with each other. How can a business be run like this. Where are the owners? The guy in the produce department told me I could not use my phone to take pictures. I told him I was not taking pictures I was actually getting directions to the party I was going to. He told me security would kick me out. I have no clue as to what kind of training these people are receiving or if customer service plays any role in it but maybe it should. I realize that the people in the neighborhood use this store because of the Mexican items they sell that remind us of our homeland but do we need to put up with 50 loose shopping carts all over the parking lot that no one is concerned about and ding up our cars. Or the sewage smell at the back of the store. No customer service. How about putting more employees at the meat department on a holiday to help with the obvious rush that is inevitable. I have been to markets in Uruguay, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Belize and all across the united states and have never had such a negative experience as the last two times I have supported this business. So I went to north gate for some meat because I heard good things. I'm willing to pay a little extra for good meat and marination. Anyway I proceeded to buy marinated carne asada and marinated chicken breast. So I go home cook the food expecting the world for the amount I pay. And I have to say it was quite distasting. The lack of taste on both meats was shocking! It looked good and smelled good but the fact that it didn't taste like ANYTHING got me pretty heated since I bought a lot. I have a question for the manager of this Pico Rivera store, why do your cashiers not bag items? I always bring my own bags and every time I do I have to bag my own items, do your cashiers understand that people are loosing their jobs due to self check out! I have to say that I came in to the store because I saw a post on social media that indicated that Santa Claus was present and there would be photo opportunities. When I arrived I found out that we were too late. Since I was there I thought I would get some good food to go. It had good and bad reviews but since I was there I felt like giving them a try. The guy behind the counter was very persuasive in selling the hot food. So I decided to get their family meal special. I asked for their red sauce but got a ranchero sauce, I don't like that. I also got a made to order guacamole, the price where the lady was making the guacamole read one thing and charged a different price at the check out, another thing I don't like. Now the food, it was tasty and I would recommend their chicken, birria and carnitas. The guacamole was good but it had jalapeños in it, I asked for no jalapeños, one more thing I dislike. So all in all this is why I will only give 3 stars because I dislike it when you think you have what you ordered and get home to find out you don't. read more

I've never heard of this chain of markets before today. There's 30 locations spread around SoCal. They've even got their own Northgate store-brand items. From dairy products to chicharones! Recommended by some of my husband's co-workers, we visited the Pico Rivera store to check it out. Strolling around: Mexican jello-style desserts- The rice pudding was calling out to me. Hot deli counter- everything you need to pick up for lunch or dinner. Cooked meats- Those grilled whole chickens looked sooo good. Cold deli counter- Salads, salsas, guacamole Tortillas- Must be made in-store or nearby. Hot & steamy in the packages. Meat counter- Quality looked really good. (This is where I sent my husband back outside to get a cart) Marinaded meat counter- Big variety. Bought a chicken fajita mix for tonight. Packaged meats- The cuts looked good. Prices were okay. Produce- Quality was good enough. I'm picky about produce. Prices were good! Here's where I picked up the most items. Bakery- Be still my diabetic heart! Nothing for me but my husband went crazy in the pan dulce display. Telera & bolillo rolls too. Canned & dry goods- Prices were so-so. I was going to pick up menudo but it was way more expensive than what I usually spend. There were some good ad specials that we happily took advantage of. I usually do my shopping here when I need something quick and don't want to stop at Aldi since Northgate tends to have high prices on most items. Today, I picked up some Minute Maid lemonade drinks for home, I read the label as I always do to make sure I'm getting the required amount for the sale price. The label clearly read must purchase 3. Many labels were on the shelf, it was pretty much filled and didn't think think to read each one. When I checked out the cashier informed me that I had to purchase 5 for the sale price. I let her know, that the labels say 3 and that I could go and take a picture of it because she must honor that price since it's clearly labeled for the same item. A manager was standing there and went to the aisle and brought back the label and it said 5. I went back to check and they had taken down all of the labels and left about 3-4 when originally there was at least 10! He must have pulled the labels so that they didn't have to honor the price. This is very dishonest, as I would have gladly picked up the 5 items if it would have said that. I have to say, that recently most of the cashiers are not very attentive or friendly and I have seen them ignore customers in line while they purchase items from people who come in to sell things to them. read more

I used to dread coming here because of the lack of parking, outdated look, and the lack of products, however, it is quickly becoming one of my favorite markets. They are remodeling and have added a bigger selection of organic foods, fruits, and vegetables. The aisles are easier to navigate and I can't help but admiring the new design of the store. Went in running late for work at 7:30 am., just to buy cooked beans. Everyone seemed to be working in slow motion. I stood there behind the counter waiting for someone to help me while everyone just looked away. Finally I asked a lady who was stocking the salsas if anyone was available to help me, she said someone will help soon! Finally a lady came from the back to help. Then only one cashier was opened. Because the Northgate Supermarket doesn't spend its money on advertisements the place offers lower prices for its produce, meats, and other goods at the store. They also have fresh made Salsas each day, fresh cooked Carnitas (shredded pork meat), Barbacoa de Res (beef in red mild spicy stew), and other traditional dishes too. Not too mention fresh bread and pastries as well! The parking gets crowded, so try to go either in the early afternoon of later in the evening. read more

I have noticed that in the few times that I frequent this store, that the majority of the employees seem miserable. I at times will greet an employee, and get nothing back ( except the what do you want face ). In today's visit to the store, I headed to the produce department where I found the majority of the fruit overpriced and bruised. It seemed as if the majority of the fruit and vegetables were being mistreated. I immediately get my answer when I hear the crashing of apples being dumped onto a display by an employee. this was a new disgruntled face that i have not seen before in this store. Im giving 3 stars because of the asada. One of the worst i tasted. It was ranchera at 6.99 a pound. My mom taught me not to throw away food but i couldn't finish this meat. The seasoning was salty and very chewy. I just bought it because we didnt want to drive to pastors on Beverly but next time i will definatly take the drive. It's very tough to make this review because I've always ignored bad attitudes and bad service but today I'm just about done. This place especially the kitchen area, the lady that I ordered some "aguachiles" from pretty much poured me about 5 shrimps and the rest being lemon juice really I want lemon juice for dinner. I tell her this is only juice, I can't take this home like this, could you take some juice out and add more shrimp she says no i can't, In my mind I'm like WTF!, and I say I can't take this like this could you please remove the juice she does it then does the opposite gives me a bunch of shrimp but no juice, really I had to get the manager which but I don't like spotlight so I courteously ask another person if they can help me, they do. This guy tries to tell me a tutorial of how to pour shrimp so I tell him I'm not trying to work here I just want my shrimp he goes on to say if I want more juice I have to get another ticket for the juice.
