this is for the Beaverton location. giving this a 2 star because they have a great selection of stuff But the skinny guy who's in his late 40's is just plain RUDE. We have been in this store 3 times 2 of these times we encountered this same guy and both times he was rude. We are new to hockey and skating we know very little. So we go in to get skates the first time and the guy acted like we were an inconvenience and made a rude comment to my son about the shoes he was wearing they were crocs. Why he made the comment is beyond me it had nothing to do with what we were there for. But the whole time we were there he just had a p*$$ a**attitude like we were an inconvenience to him. Mind you no one else was in the store.... So we bought what we needed which was over $200 spent there. 2nd time we went there to get his skates sharpened like his skate coach told him to go in after class so we did and there were some teens working and they were very nice and said that they didn't have time at the moment but to come back another time so we said oh ok no problem we will come back next week before his class. Come back for the 3rd time and this skinny late 40's guy was there standing at the cash register doing absolutely nothing. I said hi do you have time to sharpen some skates? He looked at me said no. I said ok so when will you have time. He said well I have 15 sets to do which will take about an hour. I said oh ok so we could come back at 6:30? He said No. I said uh ok So like do I need to reserve a time. He said no it's first come first serve we don't reserve spots..... ok then And I left. Why would he tell me it would be about an hour to get those other skates done but when I said I would come back at 6:30 which would be 1.5 hours later he tells me no. Freaking rude no help and still have no idea how their system works because we are new, we live over an hour n a half away and he was no help with when we can get them done. We will never step foot in that store again. And being new to this we have a lot of money coming out of our pockets in the near futures but I guess we will now find some where else to support. Mind you there was another person Behind the counter just standing there shoving her face with candy so you can't tell me he couldn't be working on the skates that were there already. Not like they were busy or short staffed because no one was in the store and they were just standing around. read more

I will start by saying that this review is for the Sherwood location. Very important backstory for contrast. The Beaverton location is rough. It's very small and I think they have a lot on their plates over there. I had so many rude interactions at that location that I was worried that I was going to have to do all of my hockey shopping online. I bought shin guards there for about $100 and a Bauer hockey helmet for about $180. I was grateful for the shred of time that the helmet guy offered to me, he genuinely crammed me in while it was busy so he gets 5 stars. My goal was to slowly accumulate enough gear to play some hockey. I originally wanted to play roller hockey and had invested in most of the gear. I even have Marsblade R1 elite level skates and I practice multiple times per week. I was about to sign up for roller hockey at Indoor Goals when I found out that they are closing. So... I decided ok fine, I'll make the best of it. Ice hockey it is, I've wanted to do this for 20 years. So, I found some used skates that were in awesome shape and decided that I'd get a Superfeet hockey footbed, some new laces, some new rivets to replace the rusty ones, and a skate sharpening. Back in the day, they were pro level skates that retailed for about $600. They are old Nike Bauers that look sweet in a vintage way and I figured they could handle a few sessions of ice while I saved up for real skates. The guys at the Beaverton shop seemed like they were absolutely disgusted at my skates, one guy with longer dark hair actually rolled his eyes at me and practically barked at me for the rest of the interaction. I shrugged it off. I needed them sharpened and the nearest rink (Sherwood) was 30 minutes away. He growled at me that I'd have to leave them overnight. Cool, no problem. I came back the next day, and this shorter guy with a buzz cut at the counter kind of spat the words "why do you want these rerivited?" I said because they were rusty, and I just want to get started with some beer league hockey and can't afford a lot right now. He chastised me for wanting them to be rerivited and then also told me that I needed to buy new holders because my holders would "shatter the moment they came into contact with ice." He then sort of smugly said that I would have to wait another day to have them sharpened. The whole interaction was so awful (again) that I went out to my car to decide what to do. I wanted to cry out of frustration because I am so sick of this town and of how few resources there are for the sports that I love. Right then and there I decided that I was going to march back into that hockey shop and get my skates back and drive 30 minutes down to Sherwood. Even though the same company owns both of these shops, the difference is night and day. A guy with a beard at the Sherwood store was so stinkin helpful and awesome that I ended up spending $300 on the sharpening, hockey pants, a chest protector, a green biscuit, a towel, practice Jersey, and I even bought new gloves to replace my other ones that are falling apart. He was just incredible. Absolutely 5 stars. Because of him I feel like I have a pro shop that I can go to. I was so genuinely upset that the two places to get hockey stuff by my house are so awful that I was really questioning if I should just not play hockey at all. I grew up in Detroit, Michigan-- hockey town. I always thought hockey people were humble and welcoming. That was my experience growing up. The guys in my class would beg me to play with them. They were amazing. Now decades later, as an adult, I almost thought I'd made a huge mistake picking hockey. If I have to battle my way through a bunch of elitist snobs to do something I love, If every interaction is a fight, if places are closing down, if the outdoor hockey rink in Beaverton is cracking up and has no nets, maybe I should just call it and just go to the gym. But thanks to that awesome dude at the Sherwood ice arena, I am stoked to keep at it and maybe finally get some real playing time! Thanks dude !!! I appreciate you so much! Awesome little hockey/skating shop! Phill is fantastic and great at fitting you for skates and gear, and finding the right set for your budget. Bought all my sons and I player gear there, and figure skates for my daughter. He's also the best to find the right hallow for sharpening skates. I'm very particular when it comes to my goalie skates and Phill helped me find the perfect one! read more

This store is attached to the Sherwood Ice Arena and we visit every time we are in the area. The staff is reasonably accommodating and did a particularly nice job helping us choose the helmet. The guys at this location are extremely nice and helpful to the point that you don't mind paying a little extra because you feel that they are working with you to get you the best gear for what you can afford, without feeling like they are pressuring you to buy the latest and greatest equipment. Their other location in Beaverton, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has had issues with Jesse. I have been having issues with my skates for a while and while trying to figure out why, he was extremely unhelpful, to the point with one other customer in the store, he would be "unable to help me until tomorrow at the earliest" simply to fit me for my skates. Literally taking my foot measurements. Went to the Sherwood location explained the issue I was having and they took the time to not only fit me for skates, to which mine are about a size too big, to sharpening my current skates to help until I can afford to get new ones. Took mine put them right into the sharpener ahead of every other pair there, and their knowledge of how to sharpen blades after I told them the issues was amazing. Even though I still need a new pair of skates, the way they took care of mine has helped tremendously. I highly doubt that Beaverton would have even gone as above and beyond for me. read more

Both Jim and Phil are extremely knowledgeable and truly want to take care of you as if you are family. They won't sell you what you don't need or doesn't fit correctly which is so critical when it comes to fitting skates or most other gear. We moved to Oregon 5 years ago, and this is the only place we will go to purchase our son's equipment. We will never shop online again. The best in the business! Phil is super knowledgeable about what we need, and what skate will best fit our son. He asks solid questions during the process to make sure we are getting the right ones. We have never felt rushed even when it is busy. Phil makes you feel like you are the only customer in the store even when there are several people waiting to be fitted for skates. Beyond helpful and the equipment is reasonably priced. We have always appreciated Phil's integrity and honesty. He won't sell you something you do not need, or try to upsell to something more expensive. read more

Came here on the recommendation from my coach at the Lloyd Center Rink. This is supposed to be a good location for getting new figure-skates fitted and older skates repaired/sharpened/stretched. I came in here because I've had my figure skates for nearly 9 years and they recently started feeling overwhelmingly painful. Turns out the ball of my food has widened over the years. It might be time to get new skates soon, but until then, NWSA did a great job stretching open the toe box and allowing my feet the space they need to continue skating without so much pain. Quick service, very friendly. The only thing that sucks is that this location is very far from the city and there is not much to do in the area while you kill time. It takes roughly an hour or two to let the skates sit on the stretching machine so plan accordingly. read more

NW Skate Authorities is about the only place (besides Play It Again Sports...yuck) to purchase ice hockey equipment. But the brothers who own and run the store do not abuse this fact. They run a great shop and make sure that customer service is always apart of the purchase and experience. While you may find cheaper prices online ($10-$20 cheaper for current product) the customer service they provide post-purchase is well worth buying from them. I've purchased 2 pairs of skates (they tend to last me 4+ years), countless sticks, helmet, protective gear...etc. from them. They take care of you and make you realize price isn't always everything. They have fixed a lot of my gear for free and have helped me with skate pain/fitting 3-6 months after purchase. While sometimes an online clearance price just can't be beat. . .I buy 90% of my gear from NSA. It's important to me to support local business, but also support shops who go out of their way to take care of their customers. Even if one of their two shops (Sherwood & Beaverton) are not necessarily close to you....it's well worth the travel time. read more
