I was super excited to find this small restaurant but it was a bit disappointing. It is nice enough but also a bit weird. My favorite Mexican dish is chili relleno and this one was just off. It's not like the egg white batter dipped ones that I love. It's more like a chili stuffed with cheese inside of a tasteless, flat omelette. The high point was the beans and rice. Those were excellent. My daughter had the veggie lettuce wraps and I would definitely recommend them. They were not seasoned but just add a bit of salt and it turns it from C to an A. I had lunch here and, unfortunately, the service was terrible. I always try to give places the benefit of the doubt, but this experience was beyond disappointing. I ordered the shrimp nachos, but they brought me shrimp tacos instead. To make matters worse, all of my friends received their meals first and were already halfway done eating before my incorrect order even arrived. After I pointed out the mistake, I had to wait even longer for the meal I originally ordered. What really surprised me was that there was no apology, no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, and I was still charged full price. I've been here a few times now and my favorite thing is the jamaica. They make it in house and it's some of the best I've had. I enjoy the cafe de olla as well. If you get the chilequiles or enchiladas, get the green sauce instead of red. It's much better (in my opinion). Loving this small family business Located on the 10 freeway city of banning !! I ordered the tamale plate which came with tamale of your choice with the Chile Verde sauce on top rice and beans. O Boy was it deliciously flavorful. I also enjoyed a cup of café de Olla, which is always made fresh daily just like my grandma used to make. Posole Menudo and Albondigas are several soup dishes that are offered, I would make sure to call ahead and see which soups are available. We had never tried their tamales before, but I'm so glad we did--they did not disappoint! We ordered the half dozen tamales with two each of the chicken, pork, and cheese & jalapeño, with verde salsa and salsa macha. The tamales were HUGE--super tasty and very filling. We also ordered the Cookie Butter Latte with oat milk, and honestly, it was one of the best lattes I've had in a long time. The ribeye, I ordered it rare but was overcooked and salty, even after politely sending it back the first time (and I never send plates back). With the ribeye breakfast being $33, I expected much better quality. The latte and cappuccino we ordered were lukewarm and overpriced for the size serving. The fresh corn tortillas were placed directly onto the plate and were cold in no time. Fresh tortillas are normally kept in a holder or wrapped in foil to keep them warm. The owner of the restaurant seems more interested in getting herself out there and known but right now she's only being known for bad food and bad service. The staff is very pushy. The owner lady is not welcoming at all and talks down to any other business owner that's not part of her "circle" Unless she knows you personally she is not welcoming or friendly! My husband & I decided to try this place only based on the pics posted on Yelp. They looked great, so why not. We did not read reviews so we can have an open mind. I ordered their red & green chilaquiles, came with beans & some chopped potatoes. I have no complaints, it was delicious- although the green sauce was my favorite. The red had a little too much comino (cumin) flavor for my liking. Loved the fresh chopped onions, it added a great layer of flavor. My husband ordered their chorizo plate that comes with chopped potatoes & homemade tortillas. He said it did not disappoint. Although he would have preferred some beans. They have a TV that showed pics of a lot of their food & we were excited to return to try them out. They also had music playing and sounded nice. The ambiance was nice, and appreciated the table in the center of the place having a bunch of individual baked goods for sale. We picked 2 to go even though it was a little hard to choose because it all looked great. Oh also our waitress came out to our vehicle & offered us a freshly baked (from that morning) piece of coffee cake. That was so nice of her & we appreciated it very much. Now the reason we aren't giving them 5 stars. Not a deal breaker because we still want to return but their prices are way too high to come as often as we would like. So to make it clear, everything we ordered for 2 people came to $77. (It included the 3% fee for paying w/ a CC & tip). I just wished my husband would have asked for a receipt so I could have known the cost (specifically) of everything like the 2 baked goods & if they charged for the second refill of the cafecito my husband asked for. I mean if one cost $4.75 you would think refills would be included. But dang, that's insane. So all in all, we want to return & try almost everything on their menu. We tried this place because it had really good reviews but after visiting, we won't be going back. We ordered a half a dozen of tamales and they were really cold and dry. They were not good at all. Our drinks had more ice than anything, and the cup was too small for the price. We also felt the servers were "too pushy" and kept offering to order other things on the menu instead of being more pleasant. She even asked us to leave a review to support their women owned business. There's a difference between good service and pushing customers into consuming more. I don't mind paying a lot if the drinks or food are amazing, but in this cafe I saw it as an overpriced restaurant that is not worth it, and the owners trying to get you to order more.
