Our server Nate, was fabulous!!!!! I brought my grandma and my three kids to have dinner, a little unsure about how my experience would be, as I had only been to eat here for business lunches. Nate was great with my kids taking their order directly from them, bringing my grandma and I new drinks when our first one getting low, and being so prompt on getting everything we needed to us. He was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. His service, along with the general manager and assistant manager, Jose taking the time to make their rounds made our experience a magnificent one. On top of the service was theeeee Great Food: The seafood fettuccine was amazing, and their fresh bread and olive oil dip was like no other I have ever had!!! I will bring every family member that visits me here to eat!!! No one should miss this! I had the displeasure of eating at not your average joes the other day. Not only did we receive terrible service, our meals were almost inedible. The gluten free items are horrible as they admitted that they pre cook the chicken separately. The chicken was dry and rubbery; my daughter was unable to even cut it. The worst part is that everyone who ordered chicken at our table became ill with stomach issues after our meal. :( not fun... the only redeeming quality was their sorbet sadly... will never dine at below average joes again... it was great when they opened, but now the second really bad meal in a row... no thank you... read more

Stopped in for lunch a couple weeks ago and had the Octoberfest menu. The Sauerbraten was highly recommended by several NYAJ people and lived up to the hype. It was fantastic. The whole meal was made better by the attention and service delivered by our waiter Dutch. I'll request his section every time I visit! Amazing experience tonight - great food (chicken dumplings, scallops with coconut grits, jambalaya and peanut butter ice cream pie) plus over-the-top service from Luke! Sat outside, ordered a burger and asked for "ultra crispy fries" Service really slow, and when food came out, fries were limp and soggy. Asked for crispy fries, and was told they would bring out another order. They did, but by the time I got it, I was done with the burger. All in all: mediocre food and poor service at Reston prices. I've been to this location once before, this time I brought along my friend, whos birthday we celebrated. Previously I sat at the bar and had a great time, so I made sure we did that again. We sat down just in time to enjoy the last couple minutes of happy hour, and I was happy to see my previous Bartender Lorianne, or as she refers to herself - La! She greeted us with a huge smile, introduced herself a got us settled with cocktails immediately. There was another bartender who's name I don't recall, however they were extremely attentive to all the guest at the bar, and seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing, the energy was contagious. They even introduced us to the couple next to us, who seem to be their regulars. I absolutely loved this, as it's nothing I've experienced at a bar before. As always the food was delicious and the drinks on point, but the atmosphere and genuine hospitality is what will make us come back again. We came here on my husband's birthday and the service and the food were 100% on point! We went on half-price bottle of wine night which is Wednesdays and that was a fun special that we added to the meal! They gave us extra bread and gluten-free bread and a separate dipping sauce to go! Last evening, I had a terrible experience with this restaurant. I ordered two appetizers on the menu for take-out. The first order was an ahi tuna wonton. The second order was Caribbean Cajun chicken strips that were black and extremely spicy. I spent $30 for appetizers that were horrible. The menu did not have prices, that was huge mistake as well. Not sure the vibe here. Don't come here if you're looking to watch sports. I've been here three times - ncaa tourney, early baseball season, and Wednesday before the nfl season started. On all three occasions I witnessed replays of sports while live games were on (recently redskins replay of a preseason game while Mlb playoff hunt had a couple nationally televised games - I'm a skins fan but cmon - don't need to see jay grudens naturally disappointed face 6 nights after the last preseason game for no reason). During the ncaa tourney there were live games not on that were not played here, and early baseball season sportscenter was on half the TVs while the nationals were on the other half. All 30 mlb teams played that night and several games nationally televised, to include another local team, the orioles. The bar was crowded every time but seemed as if it were just people in town for work looking to go out with co-workers and converse. I guess NYAJ's doesn't advertise as a sports bar but based off the setup seems like a missed opportunity. No neighborhood feel here. Food is good, bread is delicious. But beer selection appears to be unchanged in my 7 months of living across the street. I guess visitors to the town center keep it busy enough that nothing needs to change. read more

NYAJ in Reston is a nice restaurant with some unique menu choices, however we dont come too often because we feel the prices are simply too expensive for what you get. The food is tasty but your portions are on the smaller size and with the semi-recent price hike, just not worth it in my eyes. Service was ok with some hits and some misses. 1) no straws given/had to ask. (wasnt sure if they had a no straw policy or what.) 2) appetizer brought out but there were not any appetizer plates brought with it and they had already cleared our bread and plates from the bread. Had to ask for appetizer plates - cant eat the lettuce wraps without an app plate. 3) Lettuce wraps appetizer had a lot of "filler" with the noodles and slaw, but only 5 LITTLE slivers of seasoned chicken. 4) I had the sirloin tips and they were tasty and plated well for presentation, but for the price I paid 5 LITTLE chunks of meat left me dissapointed and wishing for more. 5) Hubs had the scallop and enjoyed them (again a little pricey though) 6) Peanut Butter Thang for dessert is always fabulous. 7) Told the server before we ordered, that we had a coupon and gave him the code/info. He wrote it down. Then brought the bill without the discount taken off so we had to flag him down again and tell him and he went to have it removed. 8) Refills on drinks were spot on and they came by without us having to ask, so that was a plus. To sum up, we are not sure if/when we will go back as the price was just a little too high for what you get. Glad we had a coupon though or we might not ever return. read more

Had a great dinner at NYAJ's tonight. Even though it was busy, we had attentive service and all 5 of us enjoyed our meals. Good food at a reasonable price. Caesar was our server and he was great! Today was my first time here. I was highly disappointed. My server gave me a water with food floating in it, he then caught it before I could say anything which was good but then replaced it with a cup with food stuck to it because it wasn't cleaned properly. He then took our order brought the food out and didn't come back for 40 minutes to check on us. The food was disgusting. I wanted to trade it in for something else but by the time the waiter came back I was completely over it. Another server did walk by and asked how everything was and my fiancé let them know we didn't like it he simply said "okay" and kept it moving. The waiter finally came back asked if we wanted boxes because the food was untouched we said no he asked if we were sure and again we said we were unhappy. No "I'm sorry to hear that" no acknowledgement what so ever. I get every dish isn't for everyone but the fact that my complaint wasn't acknowledged just blew my mind read more

Not your average joe was pretty average. We were there on Father's Day Sunday. Their Ahi Tuna appetizer was ok but I wouldn't recommend their Chicken Dumplings. Their Mamosa tasted good but I got a headache after only two (either bad champagne or it could just be me). The male bartender was GREAT. Very friendly and service oriented. The blond female bartender on the other hand wasn't. She looked like she didn't want to be there and it showed in her service and overall demeanor. I've been here three times now since they opened. First was a happy hour with some ballet moms. Excellent food and service. Second time with my kids in the general seating area. Once again, great service. Food was fantastic. Tonight my daughter and I popped in before ballet. Sat in the bar to get happy hour prices. They have lots of booths and tables so you don't need to sit near the bar. She had sliders at a very reasonable $6. She only ate 2, so we boxed one up to take home. They are big meaty sliders. I had the butternut flatbread. OMG. Amazing. And took half of it home. It's the size of a large flatbread. I think it was $6. It was delish. Best part was our server Gwen. Super kind. My daughter and I are trying to do what we can to decrease our global impact and asked not to use our straws. Gwen replied, "I hate giving straws!" And she took them back. I know this is no big deal to many, but Gwen resonated goodness and I like that. She was also an excellent server. Thanks Gwen!! read more

While the food was good and the happy hour prices were great, we really had a poor experience due to them stuffing us into the restaurant like sardines! We were so squished next to the neighboring tables that in order to leave or use the restroom, both you and the people sitting next to you had to move the table. Both tables next to us rotated out while we were having dinner which meant that each time we had to move our table to the right or the left for there to be space for the person to leave and the new person to sit down. Yuck! We will not be going back unless we ask for a specific table with some proper space around it. read more

I chose the restaurant because vegan/vegetarian options are clearly labeled on the menu. My friend and I both ordered the spaghetti squash bolognese, and I asked for mine to be vegan. Both had cheese on them when they were brought out by the food runner, so mine was taken back. It did take quite some time to receive the replacement dish and my friend had almost finished her meal by the time I started eating, so that's the only reason for the minus one star. The meals were delicious, and I appreciated the fact that the menu offered actual plant based options for entrees. The alcoholic beverages were also wonderful (the pineapple pain killer tastes amazing and could be dangerous!) I'd also like to give kudos to our sweet waiter, Marco. He was dealing with a very difficult table next to us and was nothing but courteous, kind, and professional to the two ladies. Both of their meals ended up being comped by the manager, and yet they still stiffed him on a tip. I inquired about it after they left, and my friend and I told him that was inexcusable and he didn't deserve such rudeness. He was so appreciative of our understanding that he even offered us a free dessert - which we were unfortunately too stuffed to accept - but we appreciated the gesture. Went there for the first time tonight. They weren't busy, as it was 4:30, but the staff were still keeping busy getting ready for tonight. We were promptly greeted, and they asked our preference on table. The first server to our table wasn't our actual server, but he wanted to make sure we got our drinks. Elizabeth came out shortly after with bread. When she realized it was our first time, she explained the menu and their philosophy of using fresh ingredients and made to order. She was really great! We got Ramen (no egg because my boyfriend is weird) and the Haddock. It came out quickly and was excellent. I loved the fish, and even sans egg, the Ramen was delicious. All in all, it was a great experience and we loved Elizabeth. We will definitely be back. read more

Great food; friendly but slow and error-prone service. Management - PLEASE train your servers and manager on how to use your mobile app (more on that later). We've been to the Reston NYAJ's six times in person and have ordered takeout three times. In almost all cases, we were very pleased with the food - flavorful and diverse menu choices. Favorites include Thai Chicken Wraps, Buffalo Chicken Pizza, Tuna Wontons, some of the special/seasonal entrees, several of the salads...and of course the bread and cheese. On one take-out occasion a burger was extremely over-cooked, but otherwise we've been very happy with the food and that keeps us coming back. We have had two servers who were awesome, and I regret not learning their names. Fast, accurate, attentive without being overbearing, made great recommendations, etc. Regretfully, the servers and host/hostess on our other four dine-in and three takeout experiences all seemed new and not well-trained. They were all friendly and polite, but generally inattentive and slow in taking orders, refills, drink orders, etc. Three times we have experienced significant errors in our order (wrong types of pizza brought to table, etc). I understand that as a new restaurant there will be a bit of a learning curve, but would expect better service on the basics at least. One thing that could significantly help with the servicing issues is NYAJ's super-awesome mobile app. The app allows dine-in customers to see their orders as it is entered (and perhaps catch an incorrect entry), order food and drink refills (helpful for a busy wait staff), pay with Apple Pay and easily split checks with others at the table. It also has a takeout order capability. The very first time we used the app for dine-in, it was amazing. Our server knew exactly what to do with it and we loved the digital interface with a in-person experience. On our five following trips, none of the servers knew how to use it. I would patiently explain that they needed to enter my four digit code into their system, as it says in the app. Twice the servers did enter it eventually after I asked, but in both cases they didn't notice when we ordered additional bar drinks from the app. Three other times, the staff just never entered the code. The worst was on our last visit, on July 16 at 4:30 PM - we sat in a bar booth and had a young female server with a thin fabric headwrap. I asked the server directly three times to enter the code, and each time she told me she would. She never even wrote it down and basically just ignored my requests. I even left the app open, with the code showing, on the edge of the table so that she could see it every time she came to the table. When she brought the paper bill, she said she could enter the code now, as she had asked her manager about it and the manager said there was not need to enter it earlier in the meal (which is totally incorrect - the great value in the app is being able to order and view your order on your mobile device throughout the meal). This server was slow in taking our order, refilling drinks, etc, and the mobile app would have made things easier for her, ironically. So please please please - Reston managers - please train your teams on the this great app. It's frustrating as a customer to have this cool tool available but not usable due to lack of training. I've commented on that frustration four times in your end-of-meal surveys, but have seen no progress. My advice to customers - try NYAJ because the food and atmosphere are great for the price point...but bring your patience in anticipation of the uncoordinated service experience. read more

Service here gets an A+ but the food gets a solid C. I really, really, REALLY wanted to love this place. Not Your Average Joe's seemed like a great restaurant addition to the Reston area. They also have a nice selection of gluten free options. There are only so many restaurants around here and it gets boring eating the same stuff all of the time. I've dined in and ordered out at this restaurant. If you want to dine in, download their no waiting app. They will not take reservations on the phone but you can use the app. If you don't, expect to wait 1-2 hours to finally be seated. With a wait like that, you'd expect the food to be phenomenal... You should prepare yourself to be disappointed. At my dine in experience, I ordered a chicken sandwich. It wasn't hot when it arrived and was unfortunately, a bit cold. I did not want to complain because the restaurant was so busy. The flavor was also a bit bland. I don't know if it needed more aioli or what, but something was definitely missing. I like my food to be flavorful and the sandwich was definitely lacking. The other people I dined with also thought their food was so-so. All in all, a mediocre dining experience. Props to the waiter though. He did a great job. My dining out experience is definitely the most disappointing of the two. I ordered online and had a scheduled pick up time. I arrived on time but the order was not ready. I waited for a while but didn't mind so much because I knew that they were crazy busy. Once my order was handed over, I drove home so my family and I could enjoy dinner. Upon arriving home, I discover that my meal that is NOT supposed to have cucumbers, has several cucumbers in it. :o( Also, the expensive carrot cake I ordered was itty bitty. Somebody gave me the infant size version. The carrot cake is delicious but I don't feel like I was given the regular size, especially at $7.50 a slice. Bonus - the carrot cake is actually gluten free and delicious! Anyway, there was nothing wrong with the other orders, but I was also told that their food was only so-so. I was hungry, annoyed, and frustrated so I called and spoke with the manager. I know hungry people can be a pain in the ass to deal with... So I did try to be as nice as possible. Anyway, the manager rocks. She was very pleasant and worked on my issue. Her efforts are very much appreciated it. I feel like Not Your Average Joe's is overpriced for he quality of food that you get. I think they need a new head chef because their food (with the exception of dessert) is very mediocre. I think they have the potential to be great but they need to make some changes. I'll be back... But most likely only for dessert. read more

Have been here a few times. Bread and dip that comes out first is PHENOMENAL! You'll want to take some home (they actually have it for sale!) Menu just recently changed and now NO LONGER SHOWS CALORIES - which I don't like. Beware of the salads, most of them have more calories than the main dishes. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Reston and my family usually eats here once a month or every other month. The food is always exquisite and the service tops in the area. We have never had a bad meal or experience here. The quality to price ratio is perfect and you can tell from the management down they care about customer satisfaction. For my recent birthday dinner we received out best service yet. Eric Y was on top of everything and quickly won over our temperamental 4 year old which is not easy, and as he received more customers we never got lost, was a wonderful experience. read more
