Came here for brunch, didn't realize brunch was only on Sundays, which is fine. The menu we were handed was very limited, so I chose the Mayfair salad with shrimp and my friend got the flatbread/soup combo. For a $22 salad, I was expecting something large, not a small side salad. It was doused in dressing and very underwhelming ($22?!??). Came here for Sunday brunch. Several good selections on their menu. My husband had the spicy blood Mary which was fantastic. We ordered eggs Benedict, chorizo Benedict, and Cajun biscuits and gravy to try. The server was prompt with drinks and taking orders. But the food took a while to come out despite the restaurant not being busy at all. Our next table got their food before we did, despite getting here after us. When the food came out, the hollandaise sauce on the eggs Benedict was badly cracked or something. The butter was pooling on the bottom of the plate and the English muffin was soggy (probably soaked up the butter). We had to send it back. The chorizo Benedict was very yummy. The taste is definitely a departure from regular eggs Benedict but in a unique way. The only thing they could have improved upon is making the poached eggs less cooked (more runny). My husband enjoyed the Cajun biscuits and gravy but I didn't care for it. It could have been spicier. Lastly, the replacement eggs Benedict was cooked nicely. The eggs poached pretty perfect. The hollandaise sauce was very basic but at least good in consistency. The English muffins were way too big, which made the diced ham looked tiny. The prices on the brunch menu were very reasonable. With a 20% check in coupon, it came to $28 for all 3 dishes and the drink. The service was good and the staff was apologetic for the first eggs Benedict. I would recommend this place for others to try. The restaurant hopefully will grow and improve. read more

I invited my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and daughter-in-law to lunch at Novellus. We enjoyed the relaxing environment. The music was at the right volume for all to hear each other. The wait staff attentively kept our drinks full. Each of us ordered a different entree, and even with the diverse palates, all ended the meal saying they enjoyed it. Beautiful place, great drink selection for the bourbon connoisseur. Food was very good. Steak was cooked perfect, chef did great with my gals shrimp scampi as well. Waitress seemed over whelmed, we had a slow start but turned into a great night as it picked up. Outdoor patio needs music! We see the speakers but nothing. 4 tables of everyone hearing each others conversations. None the less... We will be back, would love to sit at the bar next time and drop a few bills. Walk in side entrance and owner told us we Came in the wrong door, no greeting: Attempted to use coupon from Yelp site and owner said he didn't know any thing about it and wouldn't honor it when shown. We said we wanted to be seated anyway. After waiting 15 minutes and then watching two sets of customers get seated, arriving after us, we left. Don't know about food but service was awful. Not enough servers and rude owners. Went across street to Louellyns pub and ordered same items we would have at Novellas. Welcoming atmosphere, great service and quality food for less than Novellas. Such a cute spot in St Charles! It had a quaint little vibe...they should dim the lights to make it a bit swankier (they were cafeteria bright...lol). The folks and cocktails were good! We tried the seafood dip and substituted tortilla chips, as a gluten-free option. The server let us know that they have several gluten-free options, if you ask...the owner tries to make sure those options are represented as an alternative. I got a 1/2 wedge and added steak, which was seasoned and chopped perfectly for my salad. I also order the Buffalo chicken pizza. It was really good...crust had a nice crisp and the flavors were delicious. I really liked the pickled red onions. Great service and good food! We tried the Blood & Sand cocktail--such a great presentation! It's a smoked old fashioned (not a true blood and sand cocktail, fyi). They smoked it at the table in a smoker shaped like a stack of books (adorbs)! It was awesome! My first visit to this place. I had brunch with a couple of friends. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! The French toast, was scrumptious. The fresh berries and syrup was just the right sweetness. The charcuterie tray for one was ordered by a friend, which gave it high marks. The chick and waffles looked good. The decor is awesome and we were super excited when we sat down based on that alone. We ordered a bloody Mary and a whisky bacon drink to get started. They asked for the bloody Mary level and after asking about the challenge bloody Mary, the waitress talked me out of that given how hot she said it was (most people pass out or puke she said). So I said I like stuff hi, but not that hot. I grow Carolina reapers in my home garden but use them sparingly for context. She said that the 10 is what most people like me drink then. It was undrinkable and felt like they just added pure capsaicin to it much like they would do with the challenge. Not even a good flavor, just pure capsaicin. My wife's whisky bacon drink had solidified fat (not emulsified like it should be). The bacon quality in it was also subpar. Then, the food came out. The hollandaise sauce was more broken than a mirror with a bat taken to it. The salmon tasted like the cheap stuff out of a can. My wife's breakfast sandwich was fairly pedestrian as well. We ordered pretzel bites with cheese and what we got was not pretzel bites. It was more like rolled up baked dough and the cheese was either from a can or bag! Movie theater has better bestseller bites and want cheese, out lobster crab dip came wa suppose to come with viariry from crackers and bread it came with two pieces of small sliced bread and a few chips! The food we ordered was a chicken sandwich with a salad the salad was good the sandwich was well I've had better from ast food restaurants. I asked for a side of hot sauce when I placed my orders. The food came out with out the side of hot sauce 15 min later they bright it out by than I had a few bites left. We my mother I. Law orders some chicken dish with Brussel sprouts. They forgot about the Brussel sprouts by the time they finally brought the dish out she had already finish her food and that was 20 min after the food came out. We orders two more drinks 15 min later mine came out but my fiancé had to go to the bar and see what was wrong with his dribk. We got told it was not ranged in so he paid for his dribk and came back to the table. We got our check and we notice the server did charges us for my fiancés drink which they never brought out and remember I said we had to walk to the bar to figure what had happened. They did remove that particular dribk of the ticket. Over all the service and food was horrible. We did see a lady with pink hair and an older gentleman with another server hanging out by the bar not sure if they are the managers or owners but they never made an attempt to help there servers they never came to check how our food was. They did however do a good job on standing there talking away! I did notice a party of 4 walk in and the lady with the pink hair told them it would be a wait as they could not seat them for lack of stuff. The party left and the lady with the pink hair went back to stand by the bar to talk with the older gentlemen the bar tender and another sever. They had quite a few. Opened tables. I would recommend to avoid this place. I regret going here so many better paces on Main Street then this place. We will never return! read more

I was recommended to try Novellus for brunch and I'm so glad I did. The staff was super friendly, food was AMAZING, and it was reasonable price. I had the stuffed French toast and I loved it. It is pretty sweet so I wouldn't recommend it if sweet breakfast isn't your thing. Novellus has a fair sized menu from brunch items to lunch to a really nice drink menu. If you're on Main Street it's worth the stop. read more

I visited Novellus for the first time soon after it opened during Covid in 2020. I was hooked. Love the book theme, great location on historic St. Charles' Main Street, nice staff (although one server made some inappropriate comments to me once that my friends did not appreciate - I don't think he meant anything by it - long story), excellent food and drinks! It was so fun to try out little samples from the kitchen too. I brought new friends, family, and coworkers to try it any time I had the chance - mostly to try the pretzel bites, which were this awesome appetizer somewhere in-between a soft pretzel and a biscuit - so good and very different!! I've had lunch, dinner, happy hour, and weekend brunch, and had great experiences - but it was all about those pretzel bites. Unfortunately, the last time I went, which was last year, I was so disappointed to find the menu had been revised - and my pretzel bites, while still on the menu, had been completely changed! Now they are similar to some frozen-thawed-baked pretzel pieces - they don't seem handmade in-house, just something cheap they buy now - not at all like they used to serve. It was enough for me to take a break from Novellus. Bring back the original pretzel bites, and you'll earn that fifth star back! read more

Called ahead about 30 minutes prior to showing up for brunch to get a reservation. They told us that it's walk in only. So, we ubered across town ($43) to be told they have a 25 top that will be there in 30 minutes. We ended up speaking to a bartender that we were told was the manager. He told us tough luck and that they couldn't seat us because their staff and kitchen couldn't handle us all. He finally told us he could only sit us outside. We accepted. At around noon, our waitress told us that the 25 top just showed up and they were getting seated. 10 minutes later, the actual manager (someone that wasn't that bartender) came out and told us we could sit inside due to the large group not showing up. Terrible experience for brunch. Will not be back. Don't appreciate staff lying to me and trying to turn us away because they didn't plan. read more

The printed menu is no longer current. The sandwiches all come on a burnt bun. I chose the French fries as a side. They were cold, small and tasteless so I Requested ketchup. Ketchup came in a small side dressing container. There is no salt or pepper unless requested. My chicken was cold, hard to chew and a big scoop of Mano with onions. McD has better chicken. I was with a group and all orders were small and dry. There was only a couple other tables with customers. There is a long long wait following ordering food and receiving your order. They do appear to have a large drink selection. Drink up here but go to McDonald's for more edible food. read more

Went to brunch with a reservation here. At the end of the brunch we asked to split the check. We have a bigger family so we always have the checks split. We've also all worked in service or still currently work in service. After asking to split the check the server walked away and then we were greeted with someone who is under qualified to manage anything, Joe. He came back to us guns blazing about how he told us they couldn't split the check when we made the reservation (never was told that over the phone), how we were taking servers off of his floor and this and that. He was also basically yelling at us. Before this Joe had been just strutting around here eating food and watching TV. So quite useless, unless you need to split the check I guess. So we started to go off on Joe and he just walked away eventually after being a total ass to everyone. After we left we saw him just leave the store as well. So if we are taking servers off the floor, what are you doing Joe? Just yelling at guests for no reason? Eating and walking around the restaurant? Great management you must have here. We've been here twice and the service has always been great. Love the book theme; nice variety of breakfast and lunch items on weekends. They could use a classic burger on the brunch menu -- we asked for one but they only make one stuffed with cheese. Still, everything we've had there had been "mwah!" I really wanted to like this place. The bartender and the wait person were both terrific. The craft cocktails were delicious but it was all downhill after that. The wine list was quite limited and the food was uninspired. The wedge salads were fine but the rest of the food was uninteresting. Don't get the tempura vegetables. I ended up with soggy zucchini, breaded, fried and cold. The whiskey shrimp were no more than cook shrimp on a piece of toast. All in all disappointing cuisine. read more

We went back because the first time we had such an amazing time at the bar with their craft cocktails but let me tell you, the food was ehhh. The salad was missing an item listed in the description & over dressed, the rice for the poke was cold and hard (like it had been cooked and stored in the fridge), the sauce for the spring rolls tasted like it was maple syrup with spice added to it and the shrimp bruschetta still had the tails on. The ambience is pretty cool but that's where it ended. The waitress was new so I'll give her a pass when she brought the wrong kind of biscuits and gravy to my husband. The food was not good. I'd compare it to frozen, grocery store items they warmed up. We ordered a waffle for my kiddo that came out cold...like refrigerator cold. Absolutely incredible experience eating here for dinner! Our server, Allen, was kind, funny and probably the best server we've had! The owner was also very kind and accommodating to gluten free needs! They have a separate cooking space and can make almost any meal gluten free!
