I since had an HVAC company come out for something else and mentioned I had to change the heater recently. I told him what I paid and he said that was honestly a good price. Excalibur seemed honest and helpful and they were able to come out first thing the next morning and get my heater replaced. They did a good job and the new unit looks better installed than the original. They also gave me advice on how to maintain it and what maintenance I could do myself to descale it etc so it doesn't break again. Overall happy either way the service even though overall it was expensive it was still less than other quotes I got.

The shower spout was repaired that day. For the toilet flange, I was told it needed to be replaced & repositioned and I needed a new toilet. I was quoted $3583 and told it would take 3-4 hours to completed. Based on the scope of work, it seemed to be a reasonable estimate. When the plumber arrive the following week to do the work, it took 1.5 hours. I inquired about a reduction in price since it took less than half the time. I was told no. Not feeling comfortable with that, I reached out asking what the hourly rate was. Instead of answering my question, I was told that some plumbers are more efficient and I wouldn't be charged more if it took longer etc etc. I was given an option to discuss the details of the estimate via email. I then received a phone call about my concerns. I was told they would look at a $1088 charge and get back to me the next day. 2 days later I received a voicemail that I was overcharged and would receive a $585 refund. Still no explanation for what & no breakdown of charges. Now I wonder what else was I overcharged for? What is the hourly rate? How can the plumber that gave the estimate be so wrong about the time the work would take?

It only occurred when the weather was hot. Basically, only summer afternoons. We had PG&E come out repeatedly and they could not find the source. We spoke with plumbers and other heater repair companies. All of them told us that it was not our heater; that we were wrong about the inconsistency of the smell. That gas leaks are only consistent and would not happen only when it was hot. We were told that we must be wrong. We felt like we were going crazy. Until we called Bay Area Water Heaters and Dave came out (with a whole crew). He took the time to inspect our heater and said yes, this slight gas smell on hot days is something he had heard of. It was likely due to an old valve within the control panel. He walked us through our options but ultimately suggested replacing the entire heater. His team was able to do the job right then and there and at a reasonable rate. It was completed within the hour. And sure enough, no more gas smell in our garage. I understand that cancellations impact a schedule, so I remained completely calm and polite throughout the conversation and paid their full cancellation fee immediately without hesitation or dispute. Despite complying with their policy right away, the owner became hostile. He lost his temper, raised his voice, and berated me for how much the cancellation hurt his business. A cancellation fee is meant to cover lost time--it is not a license to yell at and lecture paying customers who are speaking respectfully. Handling ordinary business interactions with this level of aggression and emotional volatility is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise against dealing with an owner who treats customers this way.
