1. Hawaiian Roll
tempura shrimp, tobiko, cucumber, avocado, sweet sauce, and raw tuna with spicy mayo and a bit of diced green onions on top and tempura flakes surrounding the roll
2. Chirashi (Salad)
cut up pieces of tuna, salmon, another kind of fish (yellowtail?), cooked shrimp, octopus (or is it squid?), tobiko, kaiware sprouts, and thinly sliced cucumber on top of a mound of a lettuce, mint, cilantro mixture and rice, mix-it-yourself with unique and tasty hot sauce
= EXTREMELY DELICIOUS.
(an order of each of the above is a little more than enough for 2 hungries to share... see images posted.)
The listed dishes above: that's what this place is good for, especially during their busy hours (to guarantee the utmost freshness of their food). Go there for anything else, and you may be disappointed.

In detail:
All other rolls (especially the ones without sauce) I've tried are pretty mediocre and bland. I would rather not get their cooked "Japanese" dishes or sashimi platters (less than mediocre, according to those who've ordered them). Do not order their "green tea" (we got it once, and it was not good).
The bottom line is: the taste is all in the sauce (on their rolls), not necessarily in the fish on its own. And the roll that is always THE winner, is the Hawaiian Roll, of course. I can live on this roll!
Service: after having come to this place over 20 times as a UCSD student... and maybe over 30 times total... the service is inconsistent and lacking. Sometimes, the servers are great and helpful. Other times (especially when it's crowded), the servers forget about you for a while, you'll have to somehow get their attention, and your food might take at least 30 minutes to arrive. But I noticed that they aren't too good at seating new customers, no matter what time of day...
Price: Affordable. About $12 a person for the dishes I recommended. Also, there's a 10% off dinner coupon on their website, http://www.gonozomi.com/ :D
Quality of food: About 80% of the time I've gone there, the food is fresh and prepared properly. They don't use the freshest of fish (e.g. Sushi Ota does-- it'd be blasphemous to put sauce on their fish, since they taste amazing just on their own), but if you get my recommended dishes, the fish is usually fine (see next paragraph). But, my friend once had a bad experience with their salmon for a baked salmon roll (it was too greasy and smelly, probably not fresh).
My real gripe is: there have been those few times when the tempura shrimp in the Hawaiian rolls were NOT fresh. And that was quite disappointing. Or the rice and contents of the roll were cold (meaning, they refrigerated the roll.) So, try not to go on a Monday or Tuesday night, right before closing... but instead, deal with the crowd and get there (or take-out) when it's bustling. Friday and Saturday dinners would be good.
Also, this place is not open on Sundays... oh, how sad were the times I craved it on Sundays...
I am addicted and am in withdrawal... I can't live without their Hawaiian rolls and chirashi salad!! They are THAT good. I always plan a trip here when I am visiting SD.

I upped the rating to 5 stars because today I had *THE BEST EVER* experience there. The Hawaiian Roll was incredibly fresh and just soooooo good, I thought I had died and gone to Hawaiian Roll Heaven. And then the chirashi was just as good. :) Ah, you dishes own my soul.

Our group ordered 4 Hawaiian Rolls, which surprised (and maybe disturbed XD) them... so they made us a special non-menu roll... similar to the Hawaiian Roll... but it had lightly fried, thin onions on top... Albacore, tuna, spicy mayo, avacado, crab?, and crunchies (the tempura flakes). Even though I loathe onions, minus them, the roll was GREAT! :) That was sweet of them. read more
