The best part of this business was the car return process. It was remarkably easy: I drove in, handed over the keys, and received the receipt in my email. The car itself was in excellent condition - clean, smooth-running, and with only a few thousand miles on the odometer. However, they do need to work on their customer service, particularly regarding the pushy upselling of extra charges. Upon arrival, the facility appeared very clean, with several staff members actively cleaning. When I reached the front of the long line, I saw a staff member,walking with a towel in the back of the room who waved with the towel towards the line. I assumed it was for the cleaning personnel, but it turned out that's how he was calling the next customer, which was me. He requested a $300 deposit. I asked what the deposit was for since I already pre-paid the car. To which he replied: "Do you know that maintaining a car is expensive? What if you damage it? What if you leave food? What if you bring pets inside?" There was a long list of What Ifs of my potential damages to the car. I booked the car through my credit card, which covers Loss Damage Waiver. I was not let decline it. And I was strongly pushed for a full coverage because: "What if you crash this car? What if you crash somebody else's car?" And another long list of What Ifs. Like most car rentals, they suggested returning the car with an empty tank and offered to handle the tolls, both of which I declined. This led to yet another series of 'what if' warnings about what I could do wrong. Then the car... He asked me what kind of car I drive at home. Which is a small car. Easy to guess, that I am not comfortable driving big cars and based on that he wanted to give me a pickup truck. He motivated it with a coming up freeze and me needing to drive something sturdy. I requested a smaller car. There was another fee for upgrading. The car was not much smaller. He made it sound like Denver and Boulder didn't have any roads and I needed only a 4-wheel drive to survive. And on top of that, their receipt and the actual charge on my credit card didn't match. This business advertises low rates and hits you for double the cost of your rental in additional hidden predatory fees. They will charge you for shuttles you never took, tolls you never hit, "taxes" with no context and more. The reps there are truly trained in predatory behavior, before and after your rental. Avoid them at all cost, it will happen to you too. I personally only saw back $105 of my $300 deposit due to "refueling" which they verbally told me not to do because I had "already paid for it." It only takes one bad employee to sour the law. Victoria at the exit gate sits back with her feet kicked up while I get in my car and drive toward the exit. As I inch up to the exit gate she slams her hand into the back of my car. When I rolled down the window as if to say oh my God what happened, she says contract as if she's thoroughly angry with me. I handed her the contract in very politely said, gosh you guys need some signs. She pointed outward. I said what are you pointing at she said, the exit sign. And if she said it as if I were either visually impaired or unable to read. The problem wasn't that I could not find the exit, the problem was that there are no instructions to stop and wait for Victoria to get her feet off the counter and come greet me at the exit. When I asked Victoria, please go get your boss, she walked back into the building, sat down, and mumbled something under her breath after pointing at the building. I said go get your boss. She said he's inside go to the front. Then as I pull away she mumbles something else sarcastically. I backed up and asked her, excuse me? She said, I said sorry for showing you the exit. The good news is, I went inside and talked to Isaiah her boss. He was very helpful and very friendly, but nonetheless, he's got a disgruntled employee making final contact with his customers. I'm about to do some research on paying Highway toll in the Denver area. They charged me $11 a day for a toll pass. The rental agent indicated that without paying $11 a day, it is $30 per toll. Taking my father on his first vacation in 10 years, this is how it started; with being physically assaulted when an employee attacked me while I was 20 feet away taking a picture of the inside of the building for "YELP" tried to take my cellphone with force and aggressively attempting to rip my phone out of my hands- while using his other hand to push on me, WHY? Apparently for taking a picture ( the first picture, of the inside is the one he ran at me directly after) which , he jumped across his desk while talking to another customer ‍ to bullrush me, forcibly trying to break it for taking a picture (that just for context he never asked me not to or said anything that would make me think something like this would happen). Other customers were telling me to call the police, but I didn't want my trip to start off this way. When a manager came outside (an older guy with white hair 6'1) came out and was unapologetic, telling me I'm justified to call the police over what happened, but he refused to take any responsibility for his employee, he also said that he thinks it would be best for us to leave because his employee was becoming more agitated with us outside and I think the manager was worried the employee would have another violent outburst (which apparently is not uncommon for him I learned through other car rental places by the airport that know about this man's behavior). After going to another car rental company, they ALL knew this guy and were telling others "hey come listen to what "Sky" did this time". Advising me that behavior from him like that isn't uncommon or surprising. Someone like that doesn't belong at a job like this, a job which requires a positive attitude, not taking it personally when you don't want all the "Up-sales" which apparently is where he makes his money and taking his anger and frustration out on customers is far from the appropriate way to handle yourself. From now on I will never ignore so many bad reviews anymore just because they are cheaper. A $300 deposit for a prepay already paid for, & another $200 in up-sales saying "it's basically required" when it's absolutely not.. I saw all the terrible reviews and said to myself "it can't be THAT bad" ..... IT IS... It sure is. they lure you in with the "appearance" of better prices until the super aggressive employees try to up-sale things I wasn't aware existed & when saying "no thanks" il use my insurance; I was told "your obviously not too bright because you should" I was practically speechless, I replied "I guess I'm just not too bright" when the interaction starts getting a lot more awkward, The employee with the beard (pictured on the right) actually physically assaulted me , the reason; taking a picture of the inside for other customers (like we do here on yelp) He immediately jumped up and rushed me grabbing my wrist and trying forcibly take my phone. Luckily a few people got him away from me, I asked for the manager and he then bulrushes a second time , this time for intimidation by Puffing his chest out and bumping me. I went outside and the manager came out. Here's how you know management is the root problem by condoning this type of behavior. Employees voided from any admonishment, which shows in how unapologetic, advised me to call the police on his employee because he agreed that there were multiple different counts of assault, through violence, intimidation/threats , spitting , and intent. When I got to the place they told me the insurance was going to be over 700 dollars! That is insane. The staff member that was checking me out was very rude also. I would first like to point out that my customer service experience was wonderful as was the vehicle considering some of the experiences i have had. But now, the reason for the 1 star. I made a reservation online for 2 days, for the amount of 237.60. Upon arrival there was quite busy and the workers were working very hard finding cars due to them being one of the few companies that had rentals available or coming in. My customer service rep, asked me to use the card that I had on file which seems pretty typical to ensure that the ID and card name match and also hold the deposit. IWhat I feel was not properly explained is that I was now being charged an extra 244.74. In that 244.74 I understood that I added toll road access. I was offered an upgrade due to AWD being recommend. These were two things that I did accept. However, using my own insurance was not offered and I was charged for that. I was also charged with additional charges AP surcharge, vehicle license fee and sales tax. By not having this explained to me properly I ended up paying a total amount which I would have not agreed with which was close to 500 dollars plus 300 dollar hold. Also, after looking at the contract that was sent to me, those are not my initials. There was also an issue receiving the car due to another car being listed on my receipt which I feels may have had something to do with it being upgraded. Again I feel the customer service rep did a phenomenal job, he wasn't pushy like I've read about others experiences, but my experience with what wasn't explained was terrible and has caused some financial concerns once the account was checked and I'm charge for 200+ more dollars. read more

I visited their website once I got to my hotel and the same Doge Ram that is advertised on their website for the Denver location was showing $73.66 a day. I called their office to let them know there was an error and we were billed twice and the woman on the phone became very defensive. She cut me off and said I agreed to it and I told her that was not what I was told and that their Website reflected a lower rate and we were essentially charged for two rentals. She said I was charged twice because I picked up the vehicle an hour early. I told her I was not informed about this and after looking at the contract it does not show that either. She became very angry and said I should have asked and to ask for a manager when I drop off the vehicle and hung on me. STAY AWAY!! This establishment runs on fraud! The Better Business Bureau gives them an "F" grade. My reservation price was doubled based on lies the counterperson told me in order to induce me to sign a new contract. That contract didnt even spell out the terms. Firstly, he lied about the vehicle. Then he lied about requiring payment for use of highways. Finally, he lied to me about the amount the upgrade would cost me. Found good rate online for full-size car from NU. Counter sales person became unfriendly once it became apparent I was declining all additional items. NU sales model clearly based on offering low initial rate and then tacking on as much as they can. Finally when I had declined everything new, counter sales person said "We don't have any cars like the one you reserved. You can get a pickup truck or a minivan." The worse experience ever. I recently had a terrible experience with NU rental car Upon arrival, I had to wait two hours to pick up my car. When I finally got it, the car was malfunctioning and I had to wait another hour to get a replacement. To make matters worse, I was charged an extra $300 without my knowledge. All the friction and stress you expect from car rental, amplified. Renter beware! Good: Reasonable pricing online, and timely shuttle pickup from airport arrivals. Also good (added after trip ended): 1. I am surprised by the thoroughness of the response to this review. I feel that Nu has hired a professional to help improve their online presence, but it is unclear from the response whether the professional is empowered to influence the business such that their practices change. Hearing the customer is definitely a good step. Hope the business is now set up to be responsive to the voice of the customer :) 2. Car return process was swift and seamless. Not so good: 1. They try to upsell you all kinds of insurance. While this is industry norm in the US, I found the 'loss of use' provision particularly galling. If there is damage to the car, you not only have to pay to have the damage fixed, you will also need to pay for NU car's inability to make money from the vehicle while it is being fixed. The agent told me that this charge is much higher than the per-day rate I was paying. And, if you think worst-case-scenario, there is no incentive for Nu car to try to fix the vehicle swiftly (after all, they are making more by the car not being in service). Re. response from NU on this point -- it is less about clear communication, more about the fairness of the loss-of-use provision. Charging me more for loss of use than the price you are renting it to me for seems predatory. And, that too with no maximum on time (Nu could take a year to fix the car, and keep charging me...). 2. They ask if you 'know' the area. Chances are - you do not. Then they will offer to rent you a tool pass at $12/day. The catch - they will charge you $12 a day whether you go on a toll road or not. Scare tactic when you decline -- they charge $30 per occurrence were you to take a tool road, for each time you do take a toll road. This is in addition to the toll charge (which will be relatively small). Fortunately I had somebody local give me advice -- decline this. Just avoid toll roads and HOV lanes. End-of-multi-week-trip: I never had to use a toll road in the DEN metro area, and am glad I did not fall for this. Just avoid HOV lanes. Re. Nu response on this point -- the issue is not feeling pressured, the issue is taking advantage of information asymmetry. IF your agent told people that you only need this toll pass for HOV lanes/speed-pass lanes, but you can get anywhere without using them (my lived experience), do you want to purchase it for $12/day, that would be honest, and totally OK. 3. My car had several areas which were damaged. I took a video. Their process does not give you an opportunity to report these (most rental agencies give you a form where you mark damage before you leave the lot). Re Nu response to this point -- this is a huge plus. I wish I knew about it so I would not have made my own video. It decreases friction, and y'all should publicize this technology :) 4. My car came without a spare tire; there was also no windshield cleaning fluid.... 5. Agent told me my car (higher end) was not available, would I be willing to take a lower class vehicle now (with no cost reduction)? Or, I could wait for 20-30 minutes till my car was ready....Basically, since upsell did not work, their approach is to try to improve profit margins by reducing their costs. I did not bite. Surprise....my car was ready. Tips: 1. If your flight is late, and you end up picking your car up later than you booked it for, Nu will still hold you to the originally booked time. See image for what I experienced. This seems fair insofar as they are holding the car from your booking time (in theory). It is not in line with the larger car rental companies, where the clock starts ticking at actual pick up time. 2. It does take a good amount of time to get from the off-airport location to the airport, so budget (at least) an additional 30-45 mins from when you will drop-off to when you want to be at the terminal. 3. There is a 7-11 gas station a few hundred feed before you get to the Nu rental drop off location. A good place to tank up before you return the car. read more

Upon arrival off airport, lines were long, and the teaser rate backed up by high pressure sales for all sorts of add-ons. This is a business model built on attracting infrequent rental car users and squeezing them for extra fees, with no intention of receiving repeat business or creating any sort of brand loyalty. I would add that they take advantage of the fact that you are from out of state and "sell" you on all the toll roads you should prepay, which there were none. In addition they say that their gas is cheaper, which verbally they state a lower price. That said, when we returned our vehicle with over 1/4 tank of gas, they charged us for a full tank. we used nu car rentals and had a ok experience. It was the cheapest option. When we arrived at Skyharbor Phoenix we found out that NU car rental was not on the airport property. You have to walk some distance and take a bus shuttle. Once arriving the area was rundown and the building very dingy and dark looking. We were pressured to do several selections we did'nt want. Things weren't explained while they tried to add extra charges. They should notify people that they are not at Sky harbor apt. It adds a lot of extra time. Overall they were friendly read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. The worst rental car experience I've ever had. My family flew over 7,000 miles to come to Denver for vacation. We wanted to rent the car and go explore Colorado and maybe surrounding states. Well, NU prevents you from going to a lot of states and state/national parks. But, they won't tell you that when you sign the contract. They charge 20 cents a mile if you go on toll road, certain national parks, or cross into another state. That's 20 cents for every mile you drive the whole trip. I returned the car and they didn't want to take the car back and were extremely rude to my family and I. They want to take your money and then steal everything else you have. This place is affordable, but it's the sly rental car companies that are most costly in the end... read more

They're cheap, about 50% less than Costco travel. It's downhill from there. Waited 20 min for shuttle. When our bus arrived at the rental office, there were already 15 families in line for pickup. 3 agents. And every one had a problem. Return was quick. Then waited 20min for a bus. Which unloaded its passengers then pulled away, leaving all the waiting passengers angry and confused. Returned about 10 min later. Treated to "praise the lord" music on the shuttle ride. I contacted Nu car to let them know I was going to be a no-show, and they replied with a confirmation of the refund. 9/4/25 - Response from NU Car after they responded to my review asking me to contact them, they don't care. They say I signed the contract even though I was lied to and charges stand. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. To say they are the Spirit Airlines of car rental is giving them too much credit. I rented in July for supposedly $8.49 per day . . . I paid a total of $377.93 not counting the pre-paid fuel. I told them I would take the lowest option for damage waiver, turns out they didn't do the lowest, it was $53.66 PER DAY and they refuse to refund the difference of the lower damage waiver option. They also then lump all the taxes and fees based on the total on top of it. So it is even more expensive. They also told me that I could take the toll option or not. I ended up needing the toll and rather than just passing on the toll cost with an upcharge, they charged $90 DOLLARS in admin fees. This is in addition to the $295.56 I paid, and the actual $23 in tolls. I called about this issue and their customer service laughed, yelled at me and hung up on me. I would urge you to not fall for their "low prices" because every dime of a discount and MUCH more is piled back on your rental in every single way they can nickel and dime you. Also, ask for your receipt IN PERSON, they don't tell you your final cost when you drop off the car and say they will email you, HOURS later you will get your inflated bill to which they hope you will be traveling and can't do much about it. HAHA they are worse than I thought. I just realized the agent LIED about the pre-paid fuel. I was told I would only be charged for the amount of fuel I used. 100% a LIE they charge you for a whole tank. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. It is a giant scam and they spend more time trying to scam you than help you. We pre-paid for a car rental through Priceline to include insurance. Once we arrived, they demanded another $1000 to drive it off the lot. They told us the insurance we had doesn't cover the vehicle and that they needed a $500 deposit to rent the car. The customer service employee was so rude and exuded an "I couldn't care less" attitude. After I refused the additional insurance, the customer service agent just became hostile. After being treated terribly and with their clear lack of actual desire to help, I just called Priceline and cancelled. I was able to get a car from Hertz for almost the same price and didn't have to deal with the horrendous treatment and feeling like I was being robbed trying to get something I already paid for. We recently rented a car here for our trip to Denver for Christmas/new years time.we found a great last minute deal for a rental for the week. Plus it was at the airport area which is perfect for the way home to catch our flight. The rental process was relatively easy. It took them a bit to find our reservation and the customer service skills were a bit lacking which made us want to hurry out. The cat didn't seem like a midsize but they claimed it was. It's a SCAMM!!!! I booked my rental online through my Capital One travel and thought I got a good price for 5 days at $180 (their mystery car super saver special). When I got to NU Car Rental, the lady said that the discount car does not have a large engine so it would be better for me to upgrade, and the upgraded price would only be $150 for the 5 days I rented the car, then the add-on was the toll and the prepaid gas. The total then would be @ $300.00, in which about half of it is taxes and fees (about the price of what I originally paid of $180). It was not told to me that I had already paid the taxes and fees, and since I upgraded, I would have to pay the taxes and fees again, so my grand total for renting this vehicle at NU Car Rental was the original price I paid of $180+$320 for upgrading, equaling $500.00. She kept saying all car rental places charge this much for taxes and fees and I have never paid this much for taxes and fees at any other car rental in my life! So I went from booking a vehicle online with them for $180 to end up paying $500.00, and they did not care when I called them and told them the lady did not explain that I would be paying double taxes and fees since this would be considered a new transaction. He just kept saying did you read your agreement and no we cannot do anything for you, you should have read your agreement. I am going to write a complaint to the BBB. So save yourself the money, time and hassle and never use this car rental place!!!!! read more
