Josh the bartender is an absolute angel and this bar is fantastic. Completely different vibe from the other LGBTQ+ bars in the area and such a refreshing change. Drinks are cheap and fantastic, karaoke is fun. I couldn't recommend it more. read more

09.16.24: I just heard through the grapevine that there is a class action suit against Nu Towne saloon, and I really hope that it goes through because Michael is a terrible person and he is not very good as a manager of that place. I do love the staff that worked there, Joey, Mitchell all and even his husband Bill, but Michael is a pure piece of I'll leave it to your imagination July 2024:I truly love this place, but lately I'm not sure what is happening with the music and the Touch Tunes. When I check the TT it works fine, however when a group of us show up, it's turned off. Almost feel intentional, but I'm not sure. If you're coming to play music, I would shy away. Just my opinion, Update: 06.07.24: Came for Friday HH and the music system has changed. It is now AMI. I'm good with that, however once you sign up for it, the system won't let you play any music. It has been shut off from within playing 50's/60's music only. The TV system suggests to upload AMI and que your songs. You can't. Music is a huge piece of why we go to bars, and this will eventually keep me personally away. Maybe they don't care, it's okay. I can spend elsewhere, as will my friend. 06.16.24: So, once again there is an issue with the music. The owners, whom I care for installed a new music system AMI that offers video. I was personally playing a song that my friends were watching and the music is as interrupted by one owner without finishing the video. I said something to Michael and he stated they change it at 3:00 PM to his 80's music. I love 80's music, but why have a new system and we can't play it. I've downloaded my stars to one, for I can't do any lower. read more

My fiance and I are from Florida and we travel all over the US for work. We have been to many gay bars and this has been the most accepting of our kind (blknlez) each and EVERY staff member has made us feel like family. All the boys have treated very well during our time here and we will be sad to leave! We got to participate in many game nights, free food and even WON the NUTOWN OLYMPICS!!! This place is awesome! Eclectic decor and very friendly staff and owners... makes you wanna come back. This is the oldest gay bar in AZ but it's really an everyone bar, so welcoming! Can't believe that I've been in Phoenix all these years and didn't try this bar until today. Housed in a long narrow building across the street from the Tovrea Castle grounds, the bar is unpretentious, full of fun kitschy and antique decor, the bartenders give you generous liquor pours, the drinks are inexpensive, the clientele is diverse and friendly; even during this first visit of mine, I didn't feel like an outsider. I was new to phoenix in December. we decided to go out and had never been there before. Well, let me tell you, after 10 min in the door, we were on a barstool, and the bar tender knew we were a new face. He made us feel so comfortable, and we went back a second time . This time, we were introduced to the owners Michael and Bill. They made us feel like family! A gem of the Valley. Amazing gay dive bar with plenty of LGBTQ Americana decor throughout. Very friendly staff, pleasant service, loud music; events include (but aren't limited to) karaoke Thursday/Sunday nights, Tuesday darts night, and go-go boys on Wednesdays. Some of the bartenders claim they are heterosexual and chase after more gay men then the gays...maybe it's the.money being thrown at him but he doesn't acknowledge other African Americans and will not wait on us. The new management/owners are supper friendly but employee Z needs to be shown the door. Ron and Scott are the best people/bartenders there and now there are some new workers who still look past you instead of saying we will be right with you. As being a regular and spend so.much money on music and brews 60+ a night on some cases i would like.a bit more respect especially when the back.patio is as segregated as a prison yard. There are also.some very alienating regulars and some are darn right discriminatory...also a criminal element at 11pm . I love nutowne and I hope it lives on but as a future gay elder it should be a bit more respectful of people read more

The sign on the door says something about expect warm beer and bad service, and they did not disappoint. I was there late on a Thursday afternoon and the only patron in the bar. The bartender, who must rely only on good looks rather than personality or bartending skills, spent their entire time texting on their phone. The apparent "new owner" came in a walked by several times without so much as a "hello." I attempted to make light conversation a couple of times only to get the minimal responses in return. Not friendly, not welcoming, and not worth going back again. But then I guess I was warned by the sign on the door. Congratulations, you win! I went to this place twice during a recent visit to Phoenix. The first time was 5:00 on a Wednesday before a friend flew out of PHX. They were having a 2 for $5 deal, for which my friend's ginger whiskey qualified. I didn't get a taste but she reported the drink was super strong after every sip. I believed her. I'm 32 and I was, I think, the youngest person in this bar, but there were only about 5 other people. The second visit was at 11 pm on Friday. A diverse crowd--mostly men--rendered me no longer the youngest in the bar. They had a super handsome DJ playing, and he had quite the playlist going over throw back jams as well as some newer stuff. The bar wasn't full so it was easy to hold a conversation. I love the garage-themed decor; a bartender told me the license plate collection has grown over the years from customer contributions. If I make it back I'm hoping to make a contribution. read more

It's a bar so expect to find drinkers, some of them never go home, some go every day, some once a week and some like me that have been enjoying this place for 25 years! Nutown has always been that friendly place to grab an Ice Cold Beer on the Cheap, It's always been the closest bar to ASU Main, It has always been that place with the best holiday decorations, and yes it's a great place to cruise. What is NEW at Nu Towne is a bright new refreshed interior, uniform clad ultra freindly bartenders, and a renewed sence of community pride. It's busy on the weekends especially Sunday afternoons, so if you go on off hours bring your own party or expect to be welcomed into conversation with the regulars and bartenders, shoot some pool, or you might just get cruised Hungry? It's next to Honey Bears BBQ, The bartenders will fix you a corn dog, and on Sundays enjoy excellent grub on the patio. Well, i broke down after 5 years and being 61 now and went to this bar. Just wanted to see people like me and not into being picked up. The bartender was very nice and no attitude. I felt comfortable and safe unlike the 70's when I first came out. I loved the videos and reminded me how fascinated I was with MTV when it came out in the 70's or was it 80's. I stayed about two hours and left at 11pm. It was Labor Day weekend. What I didn't get is the place only had a few men there at 11pm. Not sure why or if it was related to the holiday weekend. The back room with the stop sign on it look amusing, but I didn't go back there. I have a feeling that's where the love making goes on, but no big deal for me. I liked the bar. Just wish I saw more people. Not into the bar scene or the most popular place to be seen, so this was fine for me. I did notice mostly older men so that made me at ease. Stop by there for a drink. I think it is or may be one of the oldest bars around. No pretense or games. read more

It was a Monday…read morenight and thought it might be dead and didn't think to look to see that there might be special karaoke nights. Walked in and noticed a number of people wearing bondage dog masks. Ok -- then karaoke started and everyone's names were preceeded by "pup" -- the host said it was kinki-oke. By the time we scanned the QR code and found a song it was already hours long -- we went out into the main part of the fairly small bar area and got a drink but then ended up leaving because it was going to be way too long -- plus we didn't really fit the theme -- oh well, the karaoke looked good -- there is a stage (I don't like when everyone sits at their seats) -- so maybe I will be back on a different night, when I check the theme, haha.
