The chips and salsa were super good!! The chilles rellenos sooo good! Not super oily and the sauce is on the side so they aren't soggy either. I got the cheese ones and I was not disappointed. You can pick to get one or an order of two. I did two and was so happy and full!!! The beans and rice are really good too. I usually never eat the beans when I go out bc they usually don't have much flavor. These were great. The guac was good too! My family got the asada, chilaquiles with steak, and my mom got some ribs. I wish I remembered the name better! Everyone loved their dish and my bf loooved the complimentary dessert. The asada and chilaquiles looked pretty good from my seat... I'm not a ribs person. Our whole experience was great. The tips are cash only so make sure to bring cash. I will definitely come back to try other dishes I saw on the menu. Also they made my son a mini crib out of chairs. Yes!!! Our dinner was amaaazing! When seated, you are greeted with a complimentary Flauta de Papa, with all the fixin's (queso fresco, crema, and salsa) and Chips and salsa of course! We all ordered the Burrito Dinner' comes with rice and refried beans and let me tell you those beans tasted just like grandmas refried beans! Huge burrito with carne asada! Sooo so good! I love that with every meal here you get a bunch of stuff free: boiled, seasoned pork topped with a corn tortilla, four salsas and pico de gallo with fresh tortilla chips, and rice pudding. They have a myriad of things on their menu, ranging from Tex-Mex classics like tacos and burritos to breakfast specialties like chilaquiles and even some seafood! I had a steak burrito dinner which came with a side of rice and refried beans. The steak was tender and seasoned very well, but the sour cream came drizzled on the outside which wasn't ideal for me but I'm sure they could've put it on the side had I asked. The homemade salsas and pico de gallo they serve are AWESOME. My father has also had food catered from here for his office parties and it's even good catered! My absolute favorite restaurant in Chicago for Mexican food. It's a ways to get to, but the food and service is well worth it. I went for lunch and they immediately sat us and brought drinks, chips and salsa, and tacos to our table. The waitress spoke to us in Spanish, which added to the ambience. She was very friendly and prompt. The food came out quickly and was delicious. I ordered a beef burrito with rice and refried beans. Oh, yeah! First of all they bring you five different salsas with the traditional pre-Mexican meal's chips and salsa. That alone drives it up a star. Then there's a piece of marinated pork with a crispy tortilla and a little bit of beans. Then the food you actually order, and just when you think there's no way you could possibly eat another bite . . . they hit you with strawberries and cream to finish off the meal. Eating at Nuevo Leon may have spoiled me for all future Mexican restaurants because I'll just be wondering "what only one kind of salsa?" and "You know what would be the perfect ending to this meal? Then I asked for a side of carne asada meat and the waitress said she couldn't bring me that. I got this place recommended by a friend of mine. I was reluctant since it is very hard to find a place so far from Monterrey -where I'm from- with the same taste and flavor. I have visited some other joints that claim to have the same taste and I have been disappointed so many times that I was not very convinced but still...I had to try it. Suffice to say I was tempted to order another meal from their menu after I ate the machacado con huevos rancheros and the tacos sabinas. The only reason the place gets a three star the service(both times). The first time we went the waiter didn't check on our time when the food came and also during this pandemic he touch our straws with his bare hands. The lady at the cash register was more attentive to our table then our waiter. So big ups to the lady. The second time we asked the host which she was very nice the first AND second time. This time we go and new person and not sure if it was because she was busy or something else but her vibes was just as worst as the first time. Large resto with booths along the walls and tables in the middle, the tables and chairs are worn from years of use.. don't expect anything extravagant here! Just like the 18th Street location, they start you out with 4 salsas, carrots and peppers & a small complimentary appetizer. The menu is large and covers all kinds of Mexican specialties.. and then some! I always get either the carne asada or tacos de sabina. The carne asada is killer served on a piping hot skillet with grilled onions, grilled jalapeno, potatoes, refried beans loaded with probably lard & guacamole! Every element of the dish has tons of authentic flavor, don't miss that onion...trust me. All dishes served with HOMEMADE Tortillas as well, flour or corn and are simply to die for! Mains were massive. I had a bowl of menudo - it was not quite as good as the Pilsen kitchen's, but the tripe was tender and the soup was well-seasoned albeit greasier and not spicy enough. I'm from out of state and have always lived within close range of some of the best Mexican food. However, this place completely blew my mind. I visited Chicago as a tourist and we picked this place just going off of Yelp. We were greeted with SUCH KIND employees and seated right away in comfortable chairs. Within 5 minutes they brought a little appetizer, I think it was like a very small pork chop in tomato broth with a small tortilla. I looked around and thought someone on my party knew the owner or something. Nope. I later saw on Yelp this is just their amazing customer service to give a small appetizer on the house. Wow!!! Some Mexican places here think they're bougie and even charge for chips and salsa. They should learn from this place! The food itself was incredible and tasted 100% authentic and homemade. I just made the mistake of ordering the wrong type of chilaquiles. I didn't notice I ordered the ones without salsa. Bummer! But that was my fault since the menu is clear. But even so, it was absolutely delicious. I also tried the chicken soup which tasted just like my mom's homemade caldo. None of the cheap fideos or canned crap. True, made from scratch, authentic soup. Everyone loved their dish in my group. Afterward, they brought out a free dessert as well. I mean...WHAT?! It was 3 strawberries with crema. Small yet hit the spot. What kind of restaurant gives you a free small appetizer and a free small dessert?! It is just brilliant and amazing service. I finally made it out west to this great establishment......serving Amazing authentic Mexican food in the heart of little village. We were greeted as soon as we walked and in and told to sit anywhere we'd like. Within two minutes we had four different salsas(all tasted amazing), chips and water. One minute later we were greeted with complimentary Mexican style pork and bean appetizer w/ tortilla. As an appetizer we ordered quesadillas Raul(AMAZING!)every dish just kept getting better and better......My girlfriend ordered enchiladas Suizas w/chicken and green salsa(not too spicy just perfect) the dish was served with rice and beans. I ordered the 1/2 Tampiquena. As we were finishing our meals the waitress dropped off complimentary arroz con leche ..... this place blew my mind. I have a dozen of Mexican restaurants I frequent especially the old Nuevo León in pilsen before it burned down, but this place was just great. I felt at home here. The service was outstanding. I had such high hopes about this restaurant after many of my friends recommended it. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as I believed. Let me start off with the good: As soon as I walked in I felt like I had just stepped into a classic Mexican Western. The decor was a beautiful rustic and you get a "homey" feel when you're there. Clearly a staple of Mexican culture. The welcome I received was by an older man who had the warmest eyes and was kind. He let us pick our table which I appreciated. We had a party of 3 + baby. I went to get the baby chair myself, but they were all dirty from previous guests I assumed. Babies are messy eaters so I think I speak for all mothers when I say, we expect the booster chairs to be sanitized, at least be wiped down. Then my dad picked to sit in the most lopsided table ever, of course I spilled my coffee... (it was amazingly hot which I love, except for when it's on my lap). The food was good, well mine was at least. I had pork ribs in sauce and they were exquisite. I can't complain about my dish. My dad and brother complained about the food two days later. Apparently they both had a case of diarrhea and they think it was the refried beans. Thankfully I didn't have refried beans, but baby did and also had a diarrhea during the night. I'm so glad he was pushing my dad's hand away when he was giving him beans, I think he knew better. Lol. Since we all have separate households that's the only food in common they ate that we thought made everyone sick. Then our bill comes along. I went to register to pay. And they have such an outdated register and charging manner that I don't even know if it they have it set up on purpose to go along with the rustic mexico décor or if they just genuinely don't care about what they charge customers. There was a man arguing with the manager about his bill, saying he was being over charged. They sorted the pricing and she refunded some money. Well my turn comes around and I see the total, I notice it's off based on my calculations. It was because she decided to charge me a double dish as well! When I called her out on it, she said she was sorry but it was waitresses fault. I don't even want to imagine that each customer gets overcharged but only a few of us notice and say something. They don't even give you an itemized receipt. I just got the cc total receipt. All in all. I have mixed feelings about this place. This was the first place I ate out at when I first moved to Chicago, and I've loved it ever since. I don't typically like going out for Mexican food (my usual thought is, "I can just cook it myself"). But Nuevo Leon is always my choice if I ever do go out for Mexican. The chicken fajitas are my favorite. Usually by the time I get them though, I'm already full off of the complimentary apps (chips and typically a taco). I also love the fact that they give you like 5 different types of salsas at your salsa. I always have leftovers. They usually give complimentary deserts too.
