What makes a corner local market special? Many things of course, but given that the price for this convenience usually means goods are higher, why shop at your nearby smaller grocery store? For starters,the people in charge need to be responsive and kind and yes it all starts at the top. The store manager Valerie, clearly has the experience, efficiency and personality to steer this store in the right direction. Problem? Question? Request? Suggestion? Valerie has the ability to get things done, the willingness to please her customers, the efficiency to get it done in a timely manner and the personality to make you feel very well taken care of. From the deli counter people to the produce and bakery folks, everyone follows her lead. I've not once encountered anyone too busy or snarky to help me and I'm a regular so yes, somewhat demanding. The selection of goods is nice, the rotation of product refreshing and the juice bar/ice cream station is terrific too. Perhaps my only suggestion would be a more plentiful or curated bakery. I do think the clientele would appreciate someone's amazing baked goods. Homemade coconut cake or Blums coffee crunch cake; something more special and different to reflect the quality of this market. Happy to live near Nugget. Was yes skeptical when they took over Paradise market. They have tweaked and twisted this store until they got it right. I love this market from the moment I walk to the door (which is surrounded with fresh produce) to each and every interaction with the employees. The choices are nothing short of amazing. This is the highest quality of food and service. I recently had guests from Sweden, they went to the market every day and loved it so much they said it was a reason to live here. I drove from the East Bay to Marin to shop at the Nugget Market in Corte Madera. However, during one visit I purchased a container of Planet Liquid Laundry Detergent, which had an undetectable puncture in it. I brought it home securely in my trunk and placed it overnight on the wooden kitchen floor. Unbeknownst to me some of the liquid contents dripped out and permanently stained the wooden floor. I informed the Store Manager, who directed me to the manufacturer who denied any responsibility. The Store Manager then referred my complaint to their insurance company, who unsurprisingly "determined" no liability for the damage done to the kitchen floor due to no fault of my own. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, who attempted several times to contact the Nugget Markets Corporate Office but the latter failed to respond. I am recounting my experience to alert fellow customers that, despite the friendly atmosphere and courteous staff, the Nugget Markets is a selfish, indifferent, callous company that takes no responsibility for selling defective merchandise that causes damage to customers' property.. Buyer beware. I will never, ever again set foot in, or spend a penny of my hard-earned money at the Nugget Markets. read more

(For the record, I wrote this review when Nugget first took over Paradise. I wish I could say there's some redeeming quality that makes me want to upgrade my review, but sadly, it has NOT improved. So I cut and paste it here per another Yelper's suggestion since there's now a new Yelp page under the Nugget name.) PARADISE LOST! I am heart-broken over the loss of my beloved Paradise Foods. The changes have been numerous and, as far as I can tell, none of them are good. First, there's the meat and seafood department. The selection of fresh items has been cut in half and the once-beautiful cases filled with varieties of fish, steak, chicken, kabobs, etc. look sparse and uninviting. (The Verlasso salmon at $19.99/lb is disgraceful...same quality as the farm raised crap at Safeway.) Plus there used to be at least two people dedicated to meat counter service; now there is only one. Another disappointment are the prepared foods in the refrigerated section. Not only are there fewer choices, but the prices have jumped. Case in point: salmon with cannelini beans used to be $7.99 and is now a whopping $10.99 for the same product!! The hot case has disappeared though they're are adding a new one, so the jury is still out there. (But the area designated for it definitely looks smaller.) They got rid of the BBQ outside that ran from spring til fall, a huge mistake based on its popularity. They've replaced it with a haphazard display of fruit which is a nuisance to get around, plus I've never been a fan of food sitting outside. The bakery department has been reduced in size...there are no longer fresh items available, just prepackaged ones. The reason I gave it one star is because the staff is friendly and genuinely helpful, plus let's face it, Yelp doesn't allow zero stars. Overall this market is one step above Safeway, but at much higher prices. I don't know who did the research for this area on behalf of "Nugget" (a name that makes me think of a cheesy casino or worse, something your dog left behind), but clearly management does not understand the Marin clientele. Hey guys, this faux-gourmet market may fly in Sacramento, but it ain't working here. Woodlands Market, please take over this location ASAP!! In the meantime, I will only go here for necessities out of convenience. After 14 years of loyal patronage, Paradise Foods is no longer my go-to market. (I give it one year...two tops.) read more

Nugget has some of the nicest employees who really care about what they do and go out of their way to help. They have a great selection of standard and exotic packaged items and drinks. Where they fall down is the lack of organic items, especially in the prepared food section. No problem, we just drive to the Good Earth in Tam Valley which is a 100% organic supermarket/cafe and has fantastic baked goods and prepared food. Will always stop at Nugget for items we might need rather than the local Safeways which are abysmal. read more

It just keeps getting worse. At least they have finally changed the signs on the outside to say Nugget. Here's the deal - we're 6 months into Nugget taking over Paradise. Read all the reviews both for Corte Madera & Novato and the theme is clear. Most customers are not impressed with the 'improvements' Nugget is making - and the person from Nugget who responds to the complaints really isn't paying attention to the concerns, because if she were, you'd expect that you wouldn't continue to read the same things over and over. If Nugget had any business sense, or understanding of the Marin market, they would have closed the Paradise stores when they purchased them and taken the time to transform them completely to the Nugget model. Then, we might have been impressed with a new concept. Instead, it's like enduring having your doctor remove a bandage very slowly from a painful wound. Every week something changes - rarely for the better, and all we customers can do is roll our eyes and mourn what's gone, replaced by something that isn't as good. Example, they're reorganizing the area where the deli/bakery/hot food used to be. Now they have squeezed in a salad bar. But it's not an impressive salad bar. There are lots of veggies dumped into containers that just look dried out. There are some prepared salads and a few protein choices. The containers you put the food in are compostable, and nearly impossible to pull off the stack. I watched someone struggle for more than a minute and then someone came from behind the counter to help her. I wonder how many of those containers are being fingered by dozens of people with dirty hands before a customer finally uses it to create their salad? Now, you finally get your salad in your container and you need implements with which to eat it. Nothing, absolutely nothing is near the salad bar. But keep searching and you'll find it next to the ice cream. Who needs forks & knives to eat ice cream? How about a sign at the salad bar telling you where to find them? I mentioned that to the poor guy helping the lady with the containers and he said 'hey, great idea!'. Well maybe it is a great idea but for what Nugget is charging us customers, they can't figure out something this basic themselves? Add to this the fact that prices are inching up, while the quality continues to slide in the opposite direction. It's hard to find what you're looking for since the store changes from day to day & they're cramming things in at every turn making it hard to navigate. Turning into an epic fail. read more

Usually stop by for lunch. Sandwiches went up 30-40% ($6.99 - 8.99-10.99) and wait times are still long. If you do a custom sandwich you get charged differently depending on who is making it. Made a point of correcting it, they refused. Will not be shopping here anymore. Educated your staff what is extra and what is not extra. How about adding 2-3 more workers during 11-2pm timeframe. read more

I'm surprised to be the outlier here given the first few reviews of Nugget Market that have been posted to date but hopefully others with similar experiences can post positive reviews as well. I really am surprised that others have had negative experiences because my family and I absolutely LOVE Nugget Market and I can't say a bad thing -- they deserve 5 stars. We find the staff to be incredibly helpful and kind, the prices to be a little more reasonable than before the transition (the weekly emailed specials are great too), and the meat and seafood to be high quality. We love the layout of the store and think the renovations were tasteful and well executed. We very rarely have to wait to get assistance and the check out lines are always short. We have two young kids and come here at least twice every weekend and the staff is always super helpful and friendly with our kids. The staff remember are kids' names and offer my daughter her favorite "cheese bagel" whenever we arrive. I feel like they are making efforts to be part of the community and we are glad that they are here. We live in Mariner Cove and are thrilled to have this neighborhood store so close. read more

I love this market. The atmosphere is very cheerful and the layout is easy to navigate. The people who work there seem happy and are truly friendly and helpful. Looking for something? They walk with you to the shelf where it's hiding. They have a great selection of organic and non-gmo foods, and carry many products from choice, small companies that specialize in healthy and/or gourmet products; their produce is fresh and the bakery and the prepared food sections are full of delicious choices. They have little tables both indoors and outside where you can enjoy a treat or a light meal any time of day. Nuggets has the friendliness of a home-town grocery store and the atmosphere of a shop you might find on the Mediterranean. Stopping in for breakfast of scrambled-eggs and fruit makes you feel as if you are on holiday. read more

The customer service here is unparalleled. I frequent all 3 Marin Nugget locations, but the Corte Madera store has the best employees. They are friendly, helpful, and go above and beyond. It's really quite extraordinary. The fruit is delicious, great salad bar, and nice desserts. (best ginger cookie in Marin ) I do think the hot bar and prepared foods from the former Paradise Market was bigger, with a better selection. I keep hoping Nugget will surpass Paradise Market in those areas soon. Keep up the excellent work in the meantime! read more

This is short and sweet but I just wanted to share that I came in here the other morning and got a pretty good croissant! I was impressed, so I decided to share. I REALLY want to like Nugget. Living in MV, my options are spending a whole paycheck at the MV Market, Whole Foods or Good Earth: or going to Safeway, which I detest. I've gone to Nugget several times now and am really on the fence with their performance. PROS: The store is easy to get in and out of and parking is easy. The produce is great and the butcher dept is VERY accommodating and knowledgeable. They also have a great vitamin/health section too. Most staff encounters have been positive. CONS: Management needs to train their young staff on basic customer service skills, especially what NOT to do or say in front of customers. One day I bought a small tub of olive tapenade. I wasn't paying attention when my items were being bagged. I was too busy listening to the conversation between the very young (female) checker and the very young (female) bagger who were commiserating about another employee "who's not all that". When I got home, I carried my canvas grocery bags into the house and placed some of them on the kitchen counter and a couple of them on my barstool which has a fabric seat. After putting away most of the groceries, I grabbed the bags that were on the barstool and when I picked them up, the entire bottom of one of the bags was sopping wet and there was a huge wet spot on the barstool. When I looked inside, I noticed the olive tapenade lid hadn't been taped down like stores always do. Perhaps if the young ladies had been less involved in a conversation that was truly not appropriate to be having in front of customers and instead paying attention to the task that they are being paid to do, this wouldn't have happened. I still get a good chuckle about this interaction: I do my grocery shopping on Saturday afternoons on my way home after running errands. I usually buy a salad or something else to eat when I get home. This day, I went to the deli counter and saw they had a sandwich of sliced chicken breast with pesto and mozzarella, which sounded good. I ordered it and when standing there waiting for it, the young man came back to me and said "I'm sorry, we're out of mozzarella". I looked at him with a surprised look on my face and responded "we're in a grocery store!" He said, "the cheese we use is different". I just stared at him and said "Are you kidding me? This is a grocery store!" I was tempted to reach in my basket and pull out the tub of mozz that I was buying for my caprese salad. I get it...the deli doesn't go walking over to the cheese section when they need more cheddar, however, in a pinch, I would think this would be an acceptable practice until they are able to take the item off the menu. This Grocery chain deserves an award for being the friendliest place in any city, they treat customers right, everyone seems to be highly talented in their respected positions! The cashiers are so friendly, kelly was an absolute joy to talk too and very welcoming, I spoke too Alison who was my cashier and she was very polite to ask how my day was, I'm glad they care, they care how my food was, they care how my day was. I thought Paradise Food market was overpriced, snobby, and unresponsive to customers unless they hobnobbed with Mr. Gilmore the owner, but the Nugget takeover takes the cake!! Paradise had a decent hot food bar, Nugget's is way to small, has unappetizing, uninteresting, and stale looking food selections that rarely get changed during the day, and instead they added a 2 island salad bar which takes up a 3rd of the store, fine, but at the expense of other items? The deli is a joke!!For example, the cold meat counter has about a thousand varieties of turkey, some ham, and maybe hard salami. But unlike Paradise, it has no kosher (I'm from NYC) bologna or salami, not even Boar's Head!!! I can't even get a lowly bologna or salami sandwich? Of course, I could go across the store and buy a pack of Oscar Meyer, but that's like buying Prius instead of a Tesla. However, the true insult are the prices.... While Paradise may have been a bit pricey, Nugget, even with more stores for greater buying power, has raised the Paradise high prices into the stratosphere! A plain personal Caesar salad at Paradise was $3.99, at Nugget, $5.99!! Their prepared single serving Salmon meal was $7.99 at Paradise, and Nugget has raised the price TWICE. First up to $8.99 and now $11.99 !!!!!!!!!!!!! for the exact same size. Now that is insane price gouging, That is but 2 examples. Even the aesthetics is worse. They removed the perfectly fine condition warm wood flooring and replaced it with cold marble that looks like it had been in a mausoleum. Oh yeah! Paradise's outdoor barbecue had tri tip for $11.99 a 1/2 slab, Nugget is $19.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy crapola... this is a travesty, but it will continue as Nugget, even more so that Paradise, continues to cater to the mega-millionaire, Range Rover, Cayenne driving Tiburon elites, rather than the many NORMAL working stiffs with mere $100,000. salaries that have to scrape by in Marin (BTW where I have lived for 40 years) read more

I walked into Nuggets last week to shop for a few random items along with a sandwich and a cup of coffee. I'm a big fan of The Nugget Market located in Tiburon and wondered it this would be a good second location as well. My vote is a Big Fat "yes"! The isles were clean, inventory fully stocked. The salad bar was fully and orderly, and my favorite part was the service people working behind the sandwich counter and coffee counter. The guy who made the sandwich got all the little fixings just right and made a gorgeous and delicious sandwich. The lady who made my coffee was friendly and I could tell she enjoyed working there. The sandwich only cost about $9 and coffee was around $3 - An excellent value! I'm really glad to have found this Nugget Market and will be back again soon! read more

For every day needs like canned good, breads, deli selections, they are great. But the meat market has been a disappointment many times, especially beef products. Today we tried (for the 3rd time) their skirt steak and it was so tough, we weren't able to eat it. I have called two times to tell them how tough the meat was. They always offer to make it right (we've never taken them up on the offer), but I'm tired of spending $16 for a product that is inedible. I am fairly sure they've received complaints before but I'm not sure if they are making any changes. No more purchasing beef of any kind from them. read more

Yesterday, I was shopping nugget with a particular list of ingredients for a French beef bourguignon dish. When I asked the gentleman at the meat counter (named Rudy R. whom I have had good experience with before) what was the best cut of meat for this dish, I was surprised at his familiarity with the dish and knowledgeable reccomendation. Then, as I was trying to choose the correct types of pearl onions (there were several varieties) and correct mushrooms, I went back to get his advice on these too, and found he was advising more like a chef than a meat counter staffer, and seemed to have prepared this dish many times. Other staff at nugget are equally helpful, knowledgeable, and available. I did not expect this kind of knowledge and help especially these days. Also, the ambiance of the store is very attractive and does NOT feel like your usual supermarket or whole foods store, where everyone seems preoccupied and often difficult to find help. We now come from Mill Valley finding the extra trip quite worth it. Produce quality is excellent, as is the meat . Lots of prepared foods too, if that is your bag. Can't say enough about these folks.
