I really want to love this place, but the menu just won't allow it. If they had just a couple meatless, healthy options I would love this place. PROS: -Relaxed atmosphere -Friendly attitude all around -Large beer selection -Fun decor CONS: -Salads all have meat. (Why call it a salad then?) All five salads have some kind of meat on them. Really cozy place with a super cool vibe! The food was comforting and delicious. We went for the 1st time tonight with friends who had never been here either, and it was the perfect spot. I had a half portion of the corned beef and cabbage, and it was perfection! The corned beef was tender, but not soggy or greasy. The cabbage still had a tiny bit of bite left to it, which I happen to like. The mashed potatoes and gravy were savory and creamy. My hubby had the fish po'boy. I snagged a bite! The bread tasted fresh and chewy-the fish was crisp and not greasy at all. Great coleslaw. Our friends had the Apple Chicken salad and the fish and chips-both seemed very satisfied! This is a review of the restaurant/food side of this establishment only - the bar looks like a fun place to be. My wife and I were hungry when we decided to try O'Doherty's Irish Grille. We walked in and were obviously over-dressed and waited to get seated, after about 5 minutes of just standing there I went to the bartender and asked if we should seat ourselves, he said no someone will be right with you, so we continued to wait. I was about ready to leave when the bartender yelled at the server, who was sitting in a booth talking to friends with her back to us. She gets up grabs two menus takes us to the very first table and tosses the menu down. When the server came back she literally kneeled on the floor in front of us to take our order, a beer and a ice tea was delivered and then we waited and waited and waited. Finally someone from the kitchen came out front and talked to the server who was back sitting with her friends, back to the door and the customers. She gets up and comes back with our food. The meat item that we ordered Medium rare was extra well done, the fries were cold. The Irish stew was horrible, no flavor and tough meat. Also when she dropped off our plates she did not offer refills on our drinks which were both empty. The food was terrible the service horrific, would we ever go back - not a chance. read more

Overall, we had a great time. Ate on the outdoor patio and had local Spokane beer before our meal. Our waitress Lindsey was sweet, hard working and bent over backwards to take good care of us. Most Irish pubs/restaurants have so-so food, but O'Doherty's was excellent. I had the fish and chips which was cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh, while my wife had the Butte Pastie, which tasted better than most pasties we had in England. Not really impressed. We decided to try this place today, because we were in the mood for some good ol fashioned comfort food...and Irish food is one of our favorites. Plus, to be honest we were a little hung over. Neither of us really liked our food. Which is a shocker, because food is my favorite thing when hungover. I had the Hooligan Reuben. It was wayyyy too big, too much thousand island dressing, and the bread was soggy. My husband had the Guinness Beef. He just said it wasn't good. Even our bloody mary's were a disappointment. They were over the top loaded with horse radish. I love a spicy bloody mary, but these were over kill. This is a sensitive one. O Dohertys is an old school institution in Spokane that is the anchor for St. Patrick's day. I have only met the owner once or twice but he is extremely funny and a nice guy. I really want to give this bar 2 stars but it is part of the soul of Spokane so it gets 4 stars. Why the discrepancy? The Pros: Great outdoor patio across from the park A ton of history in Spokane The food is solid The cons: If the bartenders don't know you, they don't care.....in fact they barely serve you. The service at the bar is agonizingly slow and bad. The place has a very loyal following (alot of Gonzaga Prep kids from the 80's) and if you are not a regular your money is better spent elsewhere. This fact has kept me from really enjoying the place or regularly going back. If you walk in not expecting to be part of the bars history and don't mind waiting then it is a great place. Ordered the fish and chips, and came out pretty damn dark, and ate more batter than actual fish. They brag about how huge the fish is, but it really is more batter than fish...and don't leave it in the fryer so long! Figured I'd give some other food a chance, so I ordered the Scottish Eggs...I like to try them whenever I run across a reputable pub. They did an ok job with them, but again...too much cooking time, and the outside was overdone. Place has potential, they just need to pay attention a little more in the kitchen. This evening the female bartender on staff was unnecessarily rude. A buddy and I ordered the same beer, drank and went to pay for the bill. When she tried to charge me more, I asked why and her curt response was "He's a family member" -- a status customers who have sung and danced on the bar receive, along with a dollar on the wall to commemorate it. There are thousands of "family members" on the wall (including me) so it's a common thing. When I told her that I have a two dollar bills on the wall, I was met with an attitude and sarcastic, "...Suuuure, that's what they all say." Ultimately, my beer was reduced to the same price. I don't have a problem with how they give their discounts; I have a problem with how the bartender chose to handle the issue, by reacting haughtily and treating me like a liar. My card was issued 8 years ago by the other bartender Alex; I guess everyone always needs to carry their green, cardboard paper, "family member" card or be prepared to have rude customer service. read more

Still it was a nice evening just to sit quietly in the shade and watch people in the park across the street. Eventually a snooty waitress came out and told me that my choice of footwear did not meet their dress standards, so I would have to leave. I argued that we had never had any problems there before but she was adamant that we would not be served. My wife and I got up and left, looking for another place where we could get a beer. We lost the money we had paid for parking and it spoiled our evening in Spokane. If you appreciate snooty waiters this may be the place for you. I won't be back. read more

It was comfortable and not at all crowded on a Sunday afternoon. The walls were adorned with dollar bills that patrons had left with their names or witty phrases (written via Sharpie) on the face of the bill. My friend explained that one must stand on the bar and sing a song to earn a spot on the wall to post said currency. This was my first time eating at this location though I have walked by it millions of time while downtown throughout the years. I was to meet a friend here before heading over to watch a musical at the INB performing Arts center. I was a bit uncertain of the place on showing up since I was early. There was an obviously intoxicated young man outside bopping along to his Ipod and leering at me. I quickly went inside and found a seat. I was quickly given a menu and asked what i would like to drink. I told the waitress I would order when my friend arrived and she came back a few minutes later to get my drink order after I had pondered over it. I order the Newcastle Ale in a pint and really enjoyed it. I am not a huge beer lover but this Ale was perfect for me. I probably will start ordering it when out and about because it suited my taste by not being bitter or having a strange aftertaste. The Ale arrived quickly and was just cool enough plus the whole pint glass was filled almost to brim. I do have to say during my 15 minute wait for my friend...the loud laughing, obviously drunk, group at the actual bar area were very annoying. I know pubs/bars are loud places but that group took the cake! They calmed down as the place filled for dinner service time and the first people getting off work at 6 p.m. My friend arrived and we ordered food. The menu is not extensive but had enough choices. It was heavy on the Irish food of course but that is expected. I ordered the Guinness Battered Fish & Chips and they were the BEST fish & chips I had in Spokane! The fish was incredibly fresh and didn't have the usual fishy taste! The last time I had fish this fresh I was in Seattle a few years ago so it has been a while. The chips (fries) were just vinegar tasting enough without going overboard. The tarter sauce that comes with them was very good as well. I have to say I totally cleared the plate which was easy because it had just the right amount of food on it without being too much. The waitress was just attentive enough without seeming over-bearing and quite friendly as well. She didn't mind us telling her we were splitting the bill after asking if were were ready for paying the tab. She was prompt in returning with the cards after we paid as well. Apparently, poor birthdayed souls may stand atop the wooden bar and sing a jingle (no accompanying music) and staple a dollar bill celebrating the event on the bar walls. This I consider random and somewhat cool. We watched a girl that just turned 21 sing Carrie Underwood as her parents beamed on. Yes, this is a place you can bring your parents. Hey, she did! The goal here was to try something "local." When I travel to another state, I like to sample unique offerings. Here, I had a Canadian beer (started with a k and sound more hawaiian in origin). They were all out of Spokane microbrews. Thus, I can't say that the beer selection is huge. It is not. The food seems like typical greasy spoon offerings. We chose not to partake as we appropriately noted the growing "food babies" in each of our stomachs. Yummy food be damned! I'll admit it. I don't frequent all that many Irish pubs. Even with a name like Hogan. I liked this place, a lot. We sampled many appetizers (Scotch egg, buffalo wings, and some sausage thing - all good), and the corned beef and cabbage, which comes with a healthy mound of mashed potatoes and gravy was a huge hit. The decor is cool, too. A few TVs are up, mostly for football (non-NFL), I imagine. You will also find the walls adorned with signed dollar bills. My unofficaly tour guide told me that if you get yourself up on the bar and sign a song, you too can put a dollar on the wall. read more

The staff here is excellent. That was the first impression. Very friendly, quick to take your order, and constantly checked up on us. I was very pleased. The food wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. My wife and I ordered: Scotch eggs, Guinness beef, and shepherds pie. The Scotch eggs were standard, the Shepherd's pie was different, and the Guinness beef was standard. On the beef and the pie, the gravy was extremely salty. I'd go back for the atmosphere, the service, and I wouldn't complain about the food. The prices aren't bad either.
