Best sushi I've had so far in Charleston!! All the other sushi places I've tried I haven't really been impressed but O-ku is well worth the visit. A large restaurant with dim lighting, edm/ house music playing, and great sushi! We started out with the spring rolls and the I cannot remember what the second dish was for the life of me but it started with beef. Lol. Both were amazing. The spring rolls and the sauce they came with were to die for. The beef was insanely flavorful and I hiiighly recommend it. For entrees I got the eat your veggies roll which was pretty good for just veggies! My boyfriend got the fuego fiasco and it was very spicy which is what he was going for. My dad got the sashimi and he said it tasted fresh but he would have liked larger portions. My mom got the rainbow roll and loved it. We got fried rice on the side which was also really good, they were not shy with the butter and it made the fried rice amazing. Overall, O-ku's sushi is good, service is great, and ambiance is fun. The portions are a bit small but it's somewhat to be expected at nice restaurant. We heard O-Ku had a happy hour Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 5-7pm and thought why not try it! It was fantastic! They have a set menu for the happy hour pricing now, so not all rolls are included, be aware of that. However I felt there was a decent variety of options I liked at very reasonable prices. We went around 5:15 and they weren't very busy at all, but as the night went on they did get busy, so making a reservation would be good. The drinks were also great, not a bad price for Charleston. O-Ku's food is absolutely delicious! My only knock is that it's a bit pricey. The atmosphere is classy but still casual. Would be a great date spot. You definitely should try and make reservations so you don't have to wait a while for a table. The miso soup was pretty good, a little more salty than I typically prefer but it was a great starter for the cooler night I was there. The Dumpling Dim Sum is really tasty. The pork gyoza and shrimp shumai were light and crispy, not overly fried. I could eat multiple orders of these :) The Fuego Fiasco roll was delicious! A nice little spicy kick to it, the fish was so fresh. Highly recommend! I also got a big eye tuna and a Scottish salmon nigiri that were really good but they were pretty small for the price! Nevertheless, they were delicious. The Sugar + Spice cocktail was really good too. The habanero-infused vodka def has a good kick to it but the sugar rim helps to balance it all out. We stopped by O-Ku for a late night dinner one night after rolling into Charleston for a long weekend. Loved he exposed brick, oversized mirrors, and artwork on the walls. Cool atmosphere. The clientele seemed to be comprised mostly by 20-somethings on dates, and groups of 20-somethings grabbing a quick bite before a nite of pub-crawling, with may be a few out-of-towners like us. A wonderful place for happy hour! I recently visited this restaurant with some friends as I had heard they have wonderful happy hour specials. One of my favorite dishes that I tried was their cauliflower as the sauce that coated the cauliflower had the perfect amount of spice, there is a very generous portion for this dish, and you can't beat the happy hour price of $5.50. I would highly recommend trying this if you are visiting here for happy hour. Our table also decided to give their wagyu tartare a try and while I really appreciated the effort that was put into this dish, I think the wagyu was slightly overcooked which gave the meat a slightly chewy texture. The taste of good wagyu speaks for itself and I wish the restaurant would have cooked this less and allowed the meat to be the star of the show. For my entree, I ordered their chicken teriyaki which I really enjoyed. I do wish they used a little more teriyaki sauce in this dish as some of my bites of chicken were a little lacking in flavor. There is a fine balance between having too much and too little teriyaki sauce and I think that adding just a hint more would do the dish a lot of good. I would highly recommend trying this spot for happy hour as the specials are good and the atmosphere is great! read more

It wasn't bad. Wasn't great either. I'll say it was disappointing though, relative to how good it looked. The menu had words like "nigiri" and "omakase" on it which is usually a good sign. The Omakase option was even $150/person. Again, usually indicative of a good sushi place. The gyoza was just okay. The maki rolls were so loaded with other stuff that you can't even taste the fish (which is probably intentional). I had a piece of otoro nigiri that was warm, and came covered in sauce. I was sitting at the sushi bar and saw it being prepared by a pretty young kid. The service is fine and the ambiance is pleasant, but overall the actual sushi skill is lacking too much for this price tag. Someone who has some money to spend and is new to sushi could have a really nice meal here, but I would absolutely not trust this place to serve me omakase. read more

So this place is really only good for the sushi club overpriced atmosphere. The rolls are unusual small size they looked like mini rolls for $16-18 per roll. I ordered the surf and turf because of all the great reviews and after the first bit you realize how much you don't need steak on a roll. The tuna tataki roll was ok but none of it was close to being worth the price. The worst part was the sashimi we ordered, they give you this tiny sliver of fish for $5. I'm a it torn on a 3 or 4, but the service experience affected the food experience, so it's a 3. It's Tuesday evening. I stop in and ask for a seat at the sushi bar. I'm seated immediately and since it was all open am given a choice as to where at the bar. I take a corner spot. Waitress comes and gives me time to review. She comes by again and takes my order: miso soup, snapper and salmon sashimi, and avocado wrapped roll. The miso is delicious. Hands down one of the better I've had, rich in flavor. The sashimi is fresh and offers nice cuts of fish. The avocado wrapped roll was just okay. The salsa on top was not a good compliment. The tangy flavor didn't mesh well. It was also very unevenly cut throughout. Some pieces were easier, some were "please, excuse me while I chew" types. As I was eating, others were seated and the restaurant begin to fill. I noticed and heard wait staff providing specials of the day, something my waitress didn't offer. Boo. Could something else have wow'ed me? Additionally, there is no soy sauce for you to pour. They pour it for you and it's a lot! The wasabi and ginger ratio was all out of sync. I literally placed the ginger and immediately took it out so it wouldn't be saturated in soy sauce. I absolutely loved the sushi here! From a gluten free standpoint there was no menu, and a lot of the rolls were not naturally GF but the server was well aware of the menu and had great suggestions. The spicy tuna, eel sauce, and tempura were not gluten free. However, they had "fried shoe-string potatoes" and it was incredible on the roll added a great crunch. We made no reservation and we had a hour wait at 9 pm on a Friday night- they conveniently took our number and texted us when our table was ready. The wait was well worth it.
