There are places that say they have outstanding customer service and then there's places that say it and actually mean it, Oku is one of those places. They say what they do and they do what they say. Everyone knows the sushi here is outstanding and the service generally is amazing. We had really slow service from the sushi bar about 55 minutes to get two rolls. We said something to the waitress, She immediately took care of it. The manager came over, No excuses they owned it. They absolutely made it right. The meal was fantastic , drinks were good and what could've been a really negative experience turned into a very positive one. I will always go back here. I absolutely love this place! We came on Friday evening for a girl's night. There were ten of us. We made a reservation two weeks ago and had to wait about 15 minutes but that's just a busy restaurant for you. The ambiance is amazing. It really is beautiful inside! The service was great. It seems like everyone helps each other, and all of the servers were attentive & knowledgeable. On to the best part - food & drinks! Most of my friends went with a cocktail. They all looked great but I went with a dry white wine, per usual! They have a pretty extensive list, which is nice. The food was truly stellar. We started with the pink Himalayan salt & truffle oil edamame, which was so delicious. I ordered the fried oyster appetizer. This appetizer was outstanding - flavorful, fresh, delicious. My only complaint with this was that it is $15 for five really small oysters. I have had oysters that were just as delicious before, and you get even more for maybe $10-12? Moving on. I ordered the Black Magic (Hakozushi), and this was really great. Basically it is squid ink rice on the bottom and all of the toppings on, well, top. So good! I also got the California roll. They gave us the same fish for the sashimi dish and nigiri dish... How convenient..... We had to order another dish cause after the 8th course, we were still hungry... I'll start by saying the service was absolutely outstanding! Prompt, attentive, and courteous. Super impressed. We went on a Friday evening around 6:30pm. Apparently it was Happy Hour during which they a run 1/2 off maki special. We were already planning on ordering sushi, so this was fantastic! No drink specials as is somewhat typical of Raleigh restaurants. I generally order hot sake with my sushi, but they don't actually offer any hot, so I opted for a glass of Sauv Blanc that was tasty. Here's what we ordered: - Spiced Chili Edamame ($6): Nicely steamed, decent portion. It was literally just a thinned out siracha drizzled on top of plain edamame, so not super exciting. - Black Widow: Hubs thought it was good and he loves fried softshell so he gets those rolls often. I wasn't wowed, but they aren't my favorite. - Niji: It was a rainbow roll and the server said they don't use fake crab which I despise, so I ordered it. I liked it. Avo was nice and buttery and the assortment of fish on top was fresh and tender. - Tuna Wrap: Probably my favorite of them all. It was fresh, simple, and had a fair amount of tuna. - Sake-Ikura: Before you order, beware...the inside is comprised of only avocado. Everything else is on the outside, which is highly disappointing. The portion of fish is incredibly small for whatever reason and the amount of rice to avocado ratio was painful. I deconstructed it to eat it. I asked our server and he informed me that that's typically how the roll comes, so I'd recommend ordering it with salmon inside, as well, and paying the upcharge of $4-5. Or not ordering at all. It had a great flavor, just really lacked protein. Lastly, here's my one gripe of the experience: EVERY roll came drenched in spicy mayo! And I mean drenched. I was so shocked. Generally nice sushi places only add the appropriate amount to the rolls it pairs best with. I'm not a spicy mayo fan to begin with, but I can deal with a little. When I'm wiping it off of each and every piece before eating, that's a different story entirely. To wrap up, I would definitely go back and know to 1. Came here for restaurant week and was impressed as sometimes restaurant week menus can be disappointing. We both got off the menu as well as a roll to split. The fish was fresh and flavorful. They do a twist on the classic sushi rolls and do a good job of it. My two favorite dishes was the salmon usuzurkuri and the sake-ikura roll. There are also some noodle dishes which sound excellent but it is difficult for me to come to a sushi place and not get sushi! Drinks - cocktails standard pricing (12-15/drink). Unique twists on classics. Cute environment. Fun for a small group or a date. Is on the pricey side but not outrageous. The only reason this place is getting 4 instead of 5 is that I'm comparing it to M Sushi in Durham which is my favorite. Visited for the first time for a big birthday dinner. Service was amazing, sushi was awesome and the bartender made the best espresso martini I've ever had. Then the server acted like we were out of line to call her over for a fork. Gave a dirty look and bad attitude about it. She cleared our plates before we were done and without asking, and with an attitude like something was on fire and we all needed to flee. Very grumpy and rushing around. First time here- Right off the bat, the hostess greeted us, ask if we'd dined here before, we had not. She was enthusiastic, friendly and shared some recommendations. Sat down and Marcella was our waitress. She was knowledge about the menu and recommended a lemon truffle sushi roll and the black magic roll. Both excellent recommendations by the way. We indulged in the Wagyu beef "sashimi" and fatty tuna sashimi, several wines and other items. All excellent. Took a chance and checked this place out despite the fact that there weren't many vegetarian options for me. But, whatever me and my husband got tasted REALLY good! We love vegetarian rolls and it was nice that this place had some distinct flavors from what we have tried at other places. We were here on a Monday night and it was pretty packed but since we had already made reservations, we didn't have to wait. The ambiance is very classy and the decor and lighting is beautiful as well. Here's what we got: * Blistered shishitos with togarashi seasonings (this was courtesy the chef) * Yasai roll * Half Kappa roll * Fried doughnuts * Chocolate bento box We definitely enjoyed the desserts a lot! Both the desserts were unique and tasted very good. The chocolate bento box comes with a molten chocolate cake and matcha ice cream. The fried doughnut holes came with miso caramel sauce and the sauce made all the difference. Extra points to our waitress for giving us amazing suggestions on what to get. After mediocre sushi in downtown Raleigh and one place who couldn't bother to even seat me, I was worried my favorite cuisine was out of reach. And then I discover O-Ku. It is next door to it's sister restaurant Oak. O-Ku is the Japanese interpretation of the English word Oak in Katakana... their alphabet which is used to express foreign words. Hiragana and Kanji are used for native language. A friend from out of town and I went there last minute and were seated at the bar. It is a place with a myriad of Japanese dishes with sushi, and sashimi being one set. All of it looked very good. Beautiful decor too. We decided to both try the Omekase. For those who don't know Japanese cuisine, Omekase is leaving the choice to the chef. This Omekase was a 9 course meal including desert. Every dish was better than the last. The first 5 dishes were delicate, tasty, and extreme innovative and raw. The last four were heartier, cooked food, but high end choices. Recommendation...get one Omekase and one lighter fare. It is more then enough food or you will waste it. Chef is well versed and surprised us in his sushi slicing ability. He is as good as any well trained Imported Japanese sushi chef. And his palette is exquisite. This place is pricey but soooo worth it. So happy I found my Japanese place!!! Delicious. It is on my list of places to frequent. So happy!!! read more

O-Ku is everything I've been looking for and so much more. I came to Raleigh to visit my sister and was delighted to find a Sushi restaurant that was so accommodating to gluten free needs, and even went above and beyond as to offer gluten free tempura in some rolls. (As any Celiac would tell you, that is absolutely unheard of!!) The ambiance in the restaurant was 10/10. Music 10/10. Service 10/10. I started with the GF Dillon Shrimp which was incredibly well prepared and delicious. For my entree, I decided to try the Black Widow, Potato, and Spicy Tuna. The Spicy Tuna roll was super fresh tasting, and the spicy mayo drizzle added a nice kick to each bite. The Potato Roll simply blew me away, but the Black Widow had to be my favorite because of the squid ink rice, tempura inside, avocado, etc. Absolutely amazing. Where do I start with this restaurant... i think this is officially mine and my wife's new "go-to" restaurant whenever we want to go on a date. From the complimentary valet in downtown Raleigh (for those of you that live there you know how convenient that it is.) to the cleanliness of the restaurant and restrooms, to the amazing service (thank you Kelly!) we received I had to give O-ku at least a 6 out of 5 stars. It was a good mix of formally dressed customers and a small portion of casual. After observing the staff at the restaurant they're all very professional and always looking out for their customers. We luckily came at a good time to beat the rush and were seated as soon as we arrived. Now, the food... the food was the best asian style I've tasted here in NC. It may be a little upscale, but you get your money's worth. We started our dinner with edamame (steamed soybean), shortly after came our entrees. The entrees were the best! I had the hurricane roll (8 pieces), my wife had the surf & turf ( medium rare steak served on skewers and a cut lobster ). We also had friends who had amazing dishes, I just don't remember their orders. The hurricane was just enough to fill me up, and not feel like I've overeaten. Our party of 6 also ordered a lobster yamaki hand roll, that was the best roll I have ever had. Now, the desserts... because we had a party of 6, we ordered one of each dessert. The mochi ice cream was good, the shaved ice was delicious, chocolate molten lava cake, 3 flavor sorbet, okinawan donut holes, and coconut panna cota. The donut holes were my favorite out of the 6 because it was a very familiar taste and it brought me back to being stationed in Japan. Was looking for a new spot to venture out to in Downtown Raleigh and had learned O-ku opened recently. So, decided to walk in without a reservation, and luckily my party of 2 was seated near the grill / sushi bar within 15 mins. The decor is fantastic and no modern with a purple glow to the whole place. Staff was extremely helpful with the menu and explaining the various dishes. We started with the Tsukemono, which are pickled veggies. Unfortunately, neither my friend or I enjoyed this, but others may like it. I then tried the Rock Shrimp - Oku Style so it is tossed in a honey sriracha aioli. Being a spice lover I had to add some sriracha to it, but this was wonderful and crispy. My friend ordered the Yakitori, and this was simply amazing! We ended up ordering more of this till we were full. They grill the chicken right in front of you when u sit at the grill bar and comes out hot and tender right on to your plate. An interesting and see enjoyable experience! No matter how busy, they always take the time to check in, make suggestions, and all around ensure that your experience is extraordinary every time! ⁣ I have been there half a dozen times by now, if not more, yet every time I am blown away by the quality of food in the quality of service. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of trying several new dishes, which I will "dish" on now! (Excuse my terrible pun) ⁣ I tried oysters for the first time yesterday, which have always been intimidating for me! Luckily, Ian was there to coach me on how to eat them, and now they're one of my new favorite seafood indulgences! ⁣ We also tried the Otoro Spoons for the first time, and WOW was I blown away! These were hands-down some of the most flavorful and uniquely presented dishes I've had at O-Ku so far, and are now fighting for first place on my favorites list with the Tuna Tatake! ⁣ We also had the opportunity to try the Lobster Temaki, which was poached lobster, asparagus, rice, chives, and volcano rock salt wrapped in a seaweed cone! I tried placing an order for pick up through a delivery app but noticed that there was a $3 upcharge for selecting a gluten free option. I called O-ku to place the order over the phone because I haven't been upcharged in the restaurant. The hostess was not friendly and told me that apps always cost more and if I wanted to avoid an upcharge I would have to come in person to place a to-go order. I wish they would take pick up orders over the phone so people with allergies wouldn't be overcharged or inconvenienced. read more

Really 2.5 star rating. I've had a lot of mediocre vegetarian sushi in my life & this was added to the list. Yasai roll was completely tasteless. Even the soy sauce seemed watered down. That was in par with the cocktails being watered down. Other people in the party had fish/seafood sushi & also said it tasted "fine". Best was the Cauliflower Karaage. Pieces were too large to be cooked completely though but the sauce was good and the outside was thoroughly coated. This is is considered a hot dish, but please DO NOT order it as a meal. It's a larger appetizer only. Lastly were the shishito peppers which were undercooked and burnt at the same time; and not in the blistered way they were supposed to be. Topping again was spicy but tasteless. Staff was great, accommodating and pleasant. Atmosphere is super cute. That said, I wouldn't go back. Don't know how this became a chain. read more

I am disappointed in this location because Charleston's O-Ku was five stars in every way and I expected the same here. On the plus side, it's a great location, ambiance and fish quality is top notch. The downsides are the menu in general isn't as grand yet the prices are still very high, and I did find a hair inside one of my rolls. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because they just opened and demand is high. If you do go, make sure you have a reservation or expect to wait for more than an hour. Our server was nice enough and gave us the uni udon complimentary. I'm not sold on this location still and I think it's a shame the menu items are so vastly different even though it's a chain. This was early January reunion with old friends..so Have tried O-Ku Charlotte and in area of RDU and had a real great experience in QC so had to try in Raleigh or course !! Booked through Open Table and great customer service all the way through from initial call to let me know our table had a broken heater and they will keep a table available inside just in case. End up arriving and alternate heater outside available so no worries there. drinks lychee Martinis tasty and they were running behind so ended up having salmon appetizer on the house. Sushi so fresh and tasty. What really impressed me was the curry noodles soup so flavorful and just enough spice to not overbearing and then even more nice the desert was on the house due to NC curfew and they were closing when we were ordering desert -which again they didn't have to do that - great touch of even more superb customer service at the end which goes a long way!! read more

This place is good, however I don't think it is worth the price tag. The interior is amazing and their staff is very friendly. They actually seemed to be a bit overstaffed but probably because they are newer. We went on a Tuesday without a reservation and there was a 30-45 min wait. Thankfully we were able to sit at the sushi bar right away instead. We ordered the o-ku rock shrimp, tuna wrap and the black widow, the chef also gave people at the bar a little dish of salmon in some sauce. The shrimp was amazing and I enjoyed the tuna wrap a lot more than the black widow. Nothing really stood out though, I wasn't thrilled by the flavors and I'm not itching to go back, it's just too expensive for what you get. read more

My boyfriend and I came to O-KU Friday evening during the sushi happy hour. First impression is an upscale trendy decor and a great spot for a date night or girls night! The waitress explained that food comes as it's ready and sharing is typically best. I started with the Pom-tequi and my boyfriend had a beer. The Pom-tequi was really good, though a more filling drink so I just had one and then switched to wine. My boyfriend wasn't thrilled with the beer selection but that could be just personal taste. Now for the food! We had: -wagyu fritters: we both enjoyed these and they tasted good, but we weren't wowed by them. The meat inside is minced so it's tasted like it could really be any meat. -chicken teriyaki: again good, but nothing to write home about. It didn't feel elevated enough to be an $18 dish. -O-Ku roll: this was my favorite thing we ordered. The hamachi was fresh and buttery. -Tuna wrap: we ordered this roll so that my boyfriend who is allergic to shellfish could try a roll as he hasn't had much sushi and I'm a huge sushi fan. I was excited that he really like it! It's not a very interesting roll, but good solid choice and we both enjoyed it. -Potato roll: I was skeptical to order this as I usually prefer rolls with raw fish rather than fried rolls but saw the positive reviews and I'm glad I did. Very different than anything I have tried before and has a great crunch! This is another roll that would be good for a sushi beginner as there is nothing raw. Service was friendly and attentive, almost too attentive where we felt we were interrupted a lot but they just opened and I would rather have my waiter over check than under check on my table. All in all I would be back during the happy hour times. To me the sushi is on par with sushi-o but way better ambiance and not quite at the level of City Market Sushi. read more

Came here with some friends in the week after opening. Everything was well oiled like they had been open for a year or more, so that was very nice. It could be argued that too many folks were involved with servicing our table, but it was nice having a somewhat synchronized service for clearing and such. There were a few kinks - such as the confusion of who should offer lemons/limes for our water, but being over-catered-to is a better problem than having to ask a million times. When we ordered our food, we were asked if we would be ok with it coming out as it was ready - which we were. I enjoy this sort of food delivery. It's hot, fresh, and staggered. I'd say the thing I didn't love: they force you into shared plates. You know, sometimes you come with another couple or group and with different tastes this doesn't work. Especially if some of the people don't like seafood. So 2 people on opposite ends of our table were given their chicken dish on 1 plate. Awkwardly passing it down the table of hungry people (remember staggered delivery - this was one of the first things to be delivered). I get the idea of shared plates - I've worked in the hospitality industry for almost 20 years now - but I hate it most of the time. At least give the table an option, especially if it has been clear that certain people ordered certain things and you've been instructed that the bill should be split based on what is being ordered, and by whom. Cost is a bit high, especially if you don't come during their happy hour. That is currently MWF from 5-7. Interesting choice of days as M-Th might be a better choice to drive business traffic. The chicken skewers are overpriced for what you get: 2 skewers with a little bit of grilled chicken on it. The sushi rolls are quite good, and reasonable. Drinks are in line with other places, minus the beer which is overpriced. This isn't some strip mall sushi place, though - and so if you realize that coming in, you will know that you're going to get better ingredients, and of course it's reasonable to assume at a higher cost for the meal. Happy Hour is when to come. It's a pretty space, though could use some sound dampening panels as it was hard to speak or hear 2 people away at my table. Service was good, food was very good. It's a nice addition and I'd definitely recommend coming. Especially if it's just 2 people who want to share the meal. Bigger groups, until being forced to share your meal is an option instead of a requirement, if this bothers you keep it in mind before booking. I'll be back for some more awesome fresh sushi. I went to O-Ku twice in one week! It's definitely a cool spot for a date or to catch up with friends. I would recommend going during happy hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5-7pm for the half off sushi rolls. Otherwise, I think it's a bit pricey for the quality and size of the rolls ($15-18 per roll). I've tried quite a few rolls there. They have all been decent but I think most of the rolls are missing a bit of that "wow" factor/flavor. A lot of the flavors were similar and just blended together. My favorite roll is definitely the Black Widow! You can ask for real wasabi that they freshly grate. It's an extra $6 (I wish our server had told us the price) for a tablespoon sized blob. I liked trying it, it had a much more smooth flavor, but I don't think it would be worth ordering again. Katana 3/5 - This was my first time trying wagyu so I had high expectations. I didn't find it to be anything special but I am glad I tried it. Tuna Wrap 3/5 - Just an average roll, nothing special. I almost wish it had a bit more texture in it (maybe something crispy). Black Widow 5/5 - This is my favorite roll there. The squid ink rice adds some nice flavor and the soft shell crab adds a bit of texture. Sake-Ikura 4/5 - Also felt like this was an average roll that was missing a bit of a "wow" favor. I think what bumped it up for me is the tiny slice of lemon on top. It helped bring out some of the flavors. Potato Roll 4/5 - My first impression of this roll is that it tasted like a fancy french fry - and I really like french fries! I probably wouldn't order it again unless I was craving something fried, but I liked trying it. Hurricane 3/5 - Again just another average roll that blended together with the other ones. I didn't think it was anything special. Cocktail: Sugar and Spice 5/5 - If you like sweet and fruity, this is a good cocktail! When I went, they were donating profits from this drink to A Place at the Table. Dessert: Sata Andagi 4/5 - A fluffy fried donut hole. This inside was much more fluffy than a typical donut hole. It was yummy and hit the sweet spot for me but it wasn't special enough that I would order it again. The ginger sugar (kind of a whipped topping) was delicious though! Ambiance 5/5 - This is a beautiful restaurant. It's a very open and modern space. Service 5/5 - Both times I went, it took the servers a while to come by with water (5-10 minutes) - but it wasn't a big deal. This place is great. I came in at 6pm on a Friday night and was able to grab a seat at the bar. The bartender was super great. He came over right away and got my drink order. He then gave me a menu and answered what questions I had. I ordered a California roll/ ( sorry I know I am basic) and asked for cream cheese. To my surprise they do not have any cream cheese? This was the only disappointing thing the whole visit. I also got hanger skirt on a stick, miso soup and kimchi salad with cucumber. The food was amazing!! The hanger skirt was amazing. All of the food was fantastic! Would come again and again! Nice thing to note is that all soy sauce is gluten free here :) Also the service was amazing. Super fast and checked in on me often. I could write a book on how much I loved this place. My girlfriend and I had decided that this was our favorite that we had so far. They had beautiful decor. The sushi was amazing, and the menu was put together very well. The drinks were absolutely spot on. The server had perfect timing and was very helpful to make sure we had gluten-free options, which they do! The price is spot on for what we had. I would make this place apart of that perfect night out, and you can dress a little to make it feel more intimate with your loved ones. I can't say enough good things, highly recommended! read more

My overall visit was a great one despite waiting over 1.5 hours to be seated when given a shorter expected time. The staff's customer service was some of the best I've experienced in a very long time. They communicated with me regarding updates with my table and even brought out an appetizer for my friend's daughter when they realized she was getting restless from the wait. Our waiter Jaime was impeccable, acknowledged and apologized for the wait, gave a great overview of the menu, and truly went above and beyond to accommodate for our needs. One of the best sushi spots in town. The rolls can be a bit pricey but the ambience, service, and everything considered makes up for it.

Dined Outside, as you can see from the pictures very nice outdoor dining area. Visited there for a special occasion and wait staff went out of there way to make it a great dinner. They provided great knowledge on the menu. I ordered the chicken thigh entree meat was cooked superbly and the bowl tasted great as a whole. I also ordered a couple of sushi rolls which were all prepared excellently. Additionally I ordered one of there cocktails which again was great. Me and my fiance ate dinner there 05/25. The food and service was outstanding. Paul the GM made us feel super welcome and Eric our server answered any questions we had about the menu in a timely manner. Great atmosphere in there as well. Some of the best sushi I've ever had! read more
