I'm a wee bit of a burger fiend. I've eaten burgers from over 200 places across the country...and when asked my favorite burger, the answer, without hesitation, is the pepper burger from O'Reilly's Pub in Clintonville. From the outside, the joint is easily overlooked as a local watering hole that may not even have a kitchen. Upon entering, the bar is definitely front and center, but there are cozy booths around the perimeter and an enclosed patio for warm weather burger outings. As for the burger, I cannot properly produce the poetry and prose to do it justice, but here goes...It's a half pound patty rolled in cracked black peppercorns, thrown on the grill and topped with cheese and bacon. It always comes from the kitchen cooked just right. The standard bacon cheeseburger experience is elevated by the slight sting of the peppercorns. Pair it with either the sweet potato fries or the onion rings and you are set for a stomach full of burger nirvana. read more

Ham n cheese and pepper burgers- really gross. First time my husband hasn't finished the burger. Bacon tasted like straight yuck grease. Fryer grease or grill has not been cleaned in awhile. Could totally taste stale grease in the food. Ugh!! Hate to say it ..... but taking a break for awhile. We moved out of town so this was our stop through while here. Okay). Very neat little comfortable space. - Other reviews have mentioned the sunken bar and the the juke box, any mention the board games near the restrooms? Super-cool! So, first impressions were suggestive it could be sketchy - definitely locals-bar-oh-cr*p-we're-never-going-to-get-service feel; there's only 1 person working the bar and the floor? We're scr*w*d. The philly cheese steak is an absolute joke. It is about 2" long, with bologna.. Then it is microwaved with craft cheese. This places used to offer a decent menu, but it has gone down hill over the past months.. I don't know if they have new management, or something else, but the food is absolutely terrible. If that is not enough, the service is terrible, and the staff acts like they hate their clients, and their lives.. Awesome local spot with great food and better service. We pulled into town and needed a big burger & a beer after a long day on the road. They have a cool sunken bar with loads of seating and the bartender was awesome. Once we ordered, she gave us some good pointers on things to do and places to go around Columbus. Lots of regulars were there providing a fun and friendly atmosphere. Everyone was super nice. The burger was really good and really big. I had the famous pepper burger while my wife had the regular cheeseburger. Both were delicious and juicy and hard to finish because of their size. True half pounders for sure. No frills neighborhood bar with bar food. The pepper bigger is legendary for the copious amount of black pepper on it. It gives a good burn. A digital jukebox is available inside. There is a bar area and several booths. The patio area provides a good large group gathering place. Ate here awhile back and I remembered the food being good so I stopped in and gave it another try! This time I had the rueben, which was heaven. Girlfriend got the club w/onion rings, and cheese sticks as a starter. Cheese sticks hit the spot and her sandwich looked amazing. Service was extremely slow, dude was just overwhelmed I'm sure. I came to O-Reilly's after hearing that they had good burgers. On a Sunday afternoon, we were one of maybe four parties in the restaurant. There were locals at the bar that seemed very engaged in conversation with the bartender. The bartender/our server did seem a bit more concerned about the regular customers experience than ours which was kind of annoying. I ordered a burger with sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries came with a very runny sauce that tasted like Frank's Red Hot mixed with something else. The fries were pretty standard, but I could do without the sauce. My burger was well-done even though I asked for it medium. It wasn't anything special at all. A lot of ground beef without much flavor. We ordered onion rings to share and thought they were pretty tasty. We did not get any beer or alcohol so maybe I'll sit at the bar next time. I don't know. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great. A nice neighborhood bar and dining option. They sell basic bar food at a decent price and they keep their beer cold. Their bartenders do a good job of making consistent drinks. The alcohol prices are good. Staff is ok, generally friendly but they seem to wait hand and foot on their regulars and find time to serve their every once in awhiles like me. A lot of the Patrick J's regulars transported their bar stools here. They have an outdoor patio that is enjoyable when the weather is nice. If they are busy go in to get your drinks because at times it seems like you are an afterthought for their waitresses. I am a fan of their fried bologna and it keeps me coming back. read more

After driving by the place at least twice a day for five years, I decided to round up a posse one lazy Tuesday evening and what was the what with this Clintonville pub-cum-dive bar. It ended up being part of the subset of dive bars that are my absolute favorite-: the wood-paneled basement dive. What's weirder about the place is that when you walk in, the bar is actually lower than where you normally stand to order a drink. I'm sure that if I was a bartender there I would get incredibly tired of having people with superiority complexes waltzing in there and ordering drinks from me like I was their errant nephew of 4 feet, but I'm sure everyone gets over the novelty of it after a visit or two. The bar has pretty close quarters, but there's a decent amount of tables and booths lining the one wall that are great for hanging out and ordering food at. Speaking of food, it's not too bad here considering how dumpy the place looks. I decided not to get too risky with any kind of fried chicken products (who knows how long they get left in the fryer at places like this) and stuck with a bacon cheeseburger instead. I've never had my socks knocked off by a cheeseburger before, but this burger was pretty damn good. I had a bowl of brown grease on my plate after I was finished, but I really could care less about that considering what actually went in to my body. Whiskey shots here are pretty cheap, which always makes for an adventurous evening of fun and carnage. I ordered two rounds of shots for the three of us, that burger, and a couple draft light beers for a total tab of around $25, which seems more than reasonable to me. The best thing about O'Reilly's is the completely random collection of people that hang out here. It was hard to determine who was a bona-fide regular amongst us tourists from campus, but they treated everyone with equal ambivalence that made me feel like I'd found a new home. I have a fair amount of friends that love this place, but I have to say that I just didn't really get it. I went for the pepper burger, which sounded pretty tasty, but ended up being really overdone. But the real downside was the uneven service. There were huge swaths of time where nobody came by our table, especially toward the end of the meal. I would've understood more if it had been super busy when we were in there, but that didn't seem to be the case. On the surface, this seems like just the type of local place that I'd love to start frequenting. I just wish I'd had a more enjoyable experience. read more

In all fairness I can't rate much of this place but I'm not interested in returning. I came in on a Friday afternoon(3:45pm), the bar was not busy and had two bartenders. I was not acknowledged, in fact I was ignored upon entering and the bartenders seemed to avoid eye contact. I sat down at the bar and waited to be served or at the very least greeted. I got nothing, no "Hello", no "Just a minute" they just went about their business conversing. Then another person entered the bar, got a friendly acknowledgment, placed a drink order got their drink and paid. While I sat under what must have been a cloak of invisibility. Save your time a take your patronage elsewhere. I'm not a strange looking person, I don't have leprosy. I'm a clean cut, well spoken African American man who apparently can't order a drink. read more

I'll start by saying that O'Reilly's is my favorite bar in Columbus, and if it was up to me, it would be the only bar that I drink at. Here's why. The price is right. Last night my lady and I had three shots of Jack, a Bass, and a PBR for $14.50. The pours are huge. Liquor shots seem to hover around the double shot range. Even more if you end up with a heavy pour. Most bang for the buck in Columbus, as far as I know. The food is great and cheap to boot. Sure, it's bar food, but the wings are spot on, every time, with delicious blue cheese. The fries, both sweet potato and traditional, are cheap, you get a ton of them, never overdone, and they come with some kind of mayonnaise that is seriously addictive. I can't get enough. These are my staples, but I also had a bite of one of their burgers one time, and it was super juicy, large, and expertly seasoned. THEY HAVE THE BEST JUKE BOX IN THE CITY. Last night, they were playing Zeppelin as I walked in. I put my dollar in and played a Van Morrison tune and followed it up with The Band after a short internal debate that led me to decide that Van and Jim Morrison didn't make sense back to back, Vans Morrison and Halen would be outright schizophrenic, and to play Van Morrison next to Neil Young would put the two geniuses too close to each other. Luckily, someone else in the room had apparently seen The Last Waltz, and played Young immediately after The Band. This kind of thing happens all the time at O'Reilly's. Also, the juke has a couple albums full of Irish drinking songs, which are always appreciated. The people are awesome. You might run into any combination of middle-agers, urban hillbillies, heavy metalers, woodpushers, DND nerds, OSU fans, or real honest-to-goodness Irishmen, but there is never (excepting St. Patty's day) an unsufferable amount of any of them, and all of these groups become 100% tolerable when everyone collectively realizes that they are in the best bar in Columbus. If it weren't for friends, I'd probably have ignored O'Reilly's. One of many bars on High St. in the strip between Clintonville and the Short North, the fairly plain exterior next to a mini-strip of takeout, tobacco, and an Asian Grocery doesn't do much to attract the eye. It's very much a "neighborhood" bar - if you live nearby, you know and love it. If you don't, they're just as happy that you leave room for more regulars. Built on a long "U" shape with the somewhat sunken bar, you'll want to grab a seat or a table and figure out what you're interested in. Pitchers are cheap, and the staff is happy to refill them, but the supply of liquor behind the bar is surprisingly robust if you'd like a shot or two to chase down. If you're in the mood to eat, they offer plenty of standard bar favorites and a good array of subs and sandwiches, but the hands down winner is their burgers - thick, juicy, and probably taking 5 years off my life, but who cares? The pepper burger, featuring a spicy pepper mix worked into the patty along with thick cut bacon, is probably their "star", but I also like the subtle heat of their Jerk burger as well. The standard chips and dipping sauce that come with a burger or sandwhich aren't bad, but spring the $2 for the sweet potato fries - they're fantastic, delicious and warm without being overly sweet or underspiced the way a lot of places in town do them. When you're ready to go, head for the bar - you'll be rung up there. Don't be surprised if the bartenders know you on sight after a couple of visits - it's that kind of place. read more

The first thing that made me happy was that instead of barstools, there are low, comfy office chair. The magic of Clintonville continues. In my three years here, I neglected to try what I can now say is the best burger I've had in Columbus thus far. I've hit O'Reilly's up for drizzanks--a perfectly adorable, Irishy, local "old man" bar. The bar "stools" are actually like pleather desk chairs which weirded me out the first time went. A couple weeks ago, there was reason to start drinking at 5pm so a friend and I went the closest place possible: O'Reilly's. And then we needed to eat. PEPPERCORN BURGER, ya'll! It's spicy in a crusty kind of way and it's not greasy at at all. Comes with the fixins' of LTO, bacon, cheese and mayo on the side if that's what you're into. Pickle, chips or fries, too. And for like 8 bucks. So I had a little hankering for a burger tonight so I went over and had a few while I ordered "to go." I was a little sad when my food was up because I had to leave--I may become a regular, at least for the burgers. read more

O'Reilly's is the bar geographically closest to my house. It has some downsides, such as: Poor selection of tap beers. Service is often either slow or impatient. Frequent problems with getting TVs on the right sports channels with the volume on. On the other hand . . . Good pepper burger. Good mushroom and onion burger. Good burgers in general. Good wings. I had the burger. It tasted good. It was well prepared (medium-well as I asked) although a little too greasy (grease running off the burger and soaking through the bun) but good flavor. The sweet potato fries were fried and flavorless by themselves but the dipping was spicy and addictive and lead to me eating more fries than I would have otherwise. My plastic cup of Guinness was bad, a bad pour? rusty tap lines? not sure what but a flat skunky Guinness is about the grossest beer in the world. I've worked in enough kitchens and bars to know that food environments can't be totally sterile. I like dives. Just because it is a dive bar doesn't mean that it shouldn't be clean. The table was sticky and filthy before and after being cleaned by our very cool nice-as-hell waiter. Everything was a little too dirty and a little too sticky. The bathroom was nasty like Bernie's-on-a-sold-out-all-ages-show-night nasty. Maybe I'm too old. Maybe it's better at night. Maybe I liked it 10 years ago but not now. We are major burger fans, so we came here specifically to give the burger a try. It was about 2:30p on a Saturday, so fairly empty...although, being a dive bar, there were some regulars. I have a feeling that if I lived closer, I'd enjoy drinking here. As it is, I decided to just order a Coke...which tasted off. Either their syrup was not portioned properly, or the tap lines were dirty. The waitress was just what you'd expect from a dive bar, a middle aged woman. She was very nice, but we had some major problems with service - both from her and the kitchen. First, we ended up waiting about 1.5 hours before we even got our appetizers. Apparently, we caught the kitchen staff between shifts and our food was forgotten. They ended up comping one of our apps for us, which was nice, but still. Apps - we had the fried mac and cheese (frozen, but still actually really yummy) and cheesy garlic bread (made fresh if I had to bet, and very good). We both got the pepper burger and neither of us were huge fans. The meat seemed a little lower quality (or maybe a little lower in fat content, ie a little dry). My burger was overcooked, and I asked for fries and got chips, but by god after 2 hours I was not going to say anything. We got out of there, finally, and won't be back. read more

We went with a fairly large group of friends (25-30) on a Friday night as part of an A to Z bar tour. We pick a bar each month based on what letter we are on. A group members calls before hand to let them know a large group of people would be coming in. As my wife and I arrived there were already a couple tables full of our group with drinks. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer and was informed by the bartender he was going to put everyone's tab on one because there were so many people. Yeah, 25 to 30 people splitting a bill will probably not work out so well. At that point anyone using a tab cashed it out and people were going to pay as they went for the remainder of the night. This is a place that allows people to run tabs on credit cards so it should not have been a big deal. Before I left the bar to go to the conveniently located ATM at GetGo across the street (no fees) I paid $2.25 for my Yuengling light. When I returned from the ATM 3 minutes later I was now paying $2.75 for my next Yuengling light. I didn't know the pricing was a fluid situation there. The male bartender seemed really annoyed that his bar was packed with people buying drinks and made snarky comments through out the night. Someone asked for an itemized receipt to which he responded, "We don't do that here." Towards the end of the evening my wife ordered three Irish Car Bombs, now I had payed $5.50 for a bottled beer and a cocktail earlier so I expected $15-17. The three car bombs came to $22.50. I know, I know it's only a few dollars or a few cents, but I don't like being taken advantage of, especially by a bartender that is not friendly and does not appreciate my business. I'm sure this place is fine for people who are regulars or who are friends with the employees, but if I have to be your friend to be treated correctly maybe you're in the wrong business. For some reason I have been putting off this review but the time has come so here it goes.... I have been venturing to O'Reilly's for a while now and have always enjoyed myself. The layout is a bit strange but you get use to being in a long narrow(ish) room. The beers are priced well and it always seems like the food was as well. The bartenders have always been very friendly to me and the groups I have been with (it helps when you hang out with Melanie B who is a regular) Last night was the first time I ordered food and was very impressed with my grilled cheese and fries. Last night was also a milestone in my bar life, I don't know how I hadn't noticed this before. O'REILLY'S HAS BOARD GAMES! Which turned a one pitcher chill Monday night into a three pitcher intense night of Jenga. We started with Trivial Pursuit but that was a much so we opted for Jenga instead, which Jenga on a tiled bar table is a challenge in itself. Even if O'Reilly's wasn't so incredibly close I would make the journey to this bar even more so now after learning the things I learned last night. All in all I think it is very safe to say this. Wait, what? I haven't reviewed this place yet...shame on me! We've been going to O'Reilly's for awhile ever since we moved to Clintonville four years ago. Our first experience was over winter break, so the OSU college crowd was gone and it was pretty quiet. None the less, we were smitten with the pieced together pub look and genuine local flavor. Upon entering we told Tommy, a bar icon, that it was our first time visiting and he immediately said, "welcome home!" Now that school is back, the place can get pretty slammed, but we don't mind because the staff stays cool and will eventually get to you with a smile. The food is awesome! Our fav picks: fish and chips that are to die for, and a big italian sub that will leave you feeling full. Not to mention, the prices are great. They also have specials almost every night. My husband and I went last night and I could not refuse the special: grilled cheese with tomato soup. I also ordered a side of sweet potato fries, which you should not miss out on. I won't lie, the soup and sandwich combo was not an adventurous meal but I also won't lie an say I don't love a super-buttery grilled cheese made with plain-old American cheese and tomato soup from a can. This may seem a monstrosity to some but it was comforting and delicious. I love all kinds of "fancy" cheeses but as far as grilled cheese goes, it's American for me every time! I digress... To sum up: The good: great food, a friendly chatty crowd, cool bartenders (sometimes you have let them warm up to you), and one of them new-fangled digimatized juke boxes with a decent selection The bad: gets insanely busy on some game days and holidays (ESPECIALLY St. Paddy's day which is standing room only by 8pm), don't go with your heart set on one single item on the menu if you're going late at night...once they're out, they're out There's probably more I could say but that's plenty of good stuff to convince you to go if you haven't, no? read more

Out of all the Clintonville options, this one so far is my favorite. I've hit up O'Reillys a few times with friends, and it seems like a pretty decent place to get my drink on. A rundown of the basics: Food- The prices seem reasonable and the sandwich I had was really good. I haven't had a lot else there other than some fries, but I've heard favorable things about the burgers. Beers- The draft selection isn't too fabulous, if I could change anything it would be this. Bottle selection seemed decent. Prices were about normal, pretty good specials on pitchers. Layout- It's a bit awkward, the whole place is long and narrow and doesn't have a ton of space. There's a decent patio that I didn't even realize was there at first. It gets crowded fast though, as does the parking. If you can walk or bike instead of trying to park here, I would. Service- It's been pretty busy the times I've gone, so sometimes service is a bit slow. It might help if they put another bartender and waiter on staff during busy nights. Other than that, the service is fine. Not always overly friendly but nice enough, seem to joke around with the customers, definitely better than Patrick J's down the street. Everything else- There's parking out front but not a ton of it, so come early if you want to park. Bathrooms were fairly gross and smelly, but it's a bar so that's not new, just be prepared for that. Crowd is decently friendly, though it's always a bit different when I head there so I don't know how many regulars they have. I love this place. I've been here numerous times and the food is always generous in portion and delicious. I get the turkey sandwich and there is always a generous portion of meat in it. The sweet potato fries are to die for, and again, they are served in a generous portion. My friends who accompany me say that it doesn't get any better than the pepperburger. They have always been huge fans of all O'Reilly's burgers. Another friend who comes with us always gets a salad, and it always looks pretty fresh to me. The drinks are average priced but they're never too cold: too many times I've gone here and the beer is almost warm. Service is always great. Definitely give this place a chance if you don't want to be around the 21-22 year old crowd and want decent adult bar with some great food. read more

Went for the first time based on the reviews. First, I will give them a bye on the service as there was just the one person having to serve and also bar tend so service was very slow (not sure why only 1 person during the lunch hour on a Saturday). Not withstanding that, we were disappointed with the food and price. The beers, while crafts, were $7.50 each. Both had sandwiches and at $10+ each and with only chips is also a little steep. But the quality of the sandwiches is the reason for the low rating. I had a Rueben. The corned beef looked and tasted like what I would get at the supermarket deli. The same for the roast beef sandwich my wife had and both were only 4 or so thin slices. I have had plenty of both here in Columbus and other cities and that is not close to the better deli type of restaurants or pubs. I would expect better from an Irish Pub on the corned beef. We also ordered fries that were luke warm and I will write that off because of the shortage of wait staff. Also, neither sandwich came as we requested even though our waitress wrote down and repeated what we wanted on the sandwiches, so I would assume the mistakes are on the kitchen. Oh O'Reilly's. I don't get to you as often as I know I should but I do love you. Truly. From my time of getting kicked-to-the-curb once, I found solace in your grilled cheese and comfort in your cold brews mid-afternoon while I planned my rebounding plan-of-attack. I've had many of times where my one buddy, whom I consider the older brother I've never had, and I have enjoyed Jamesons and caught up on life's debauchery and shenanigans. This past weekend I was entertained by some dude's "whale tale" sitting at the bar-no EFF's given. I respect that! Everyone can come here, be themselves, enjoy a pint and do their thing. And getting back to that grilled cheese...I'm a simple gal and this is, in my opinion, THE BEST standard grilled cheese in the city. I can tell you that the pepper burger is as good as advertised. The sweet potato fries are wonderful and have a good flavor to them that I am not sure that I want to drench them in the hot and addictive "crack sauce" The prices here are pretty reasonable for what you you get. There is a good patio out to the side that in the warmer weather is perfect to enjoy a cold beer with some friends and a burger. The Burgers are a good size, more then enough to eat for a second meal, they hold up pretty good cold as well, not drenched in grease so the bun isn't soggy, but still with a good amount of juiciness. The Beer selection isn't over the top. Sure fine, If I wanted to have 50 taps I'd go to World of Beers. Clintonville has an awkward selection of bars, this is most likely my favorite that I've stumbled upon. read more

Was down the road at Sick Weekend at Ace of Cups and hankering for a good burger. Popped in and was lucky enough to get in just before the kitchen closed. I got the basic cheeseburger. Despite being the end of the night, it was cooked perfectly to temperature. Nice soft fresh bun and fresh toppings. The bartender server also gave me a cookie. So, O'Reilly's is my neighborhood pub. It's a 20 feet from my house and is rarely so busy that there isn't anywhere to sit. They have Yuengling on tap (hipsters) as well as a couple decent IPA's. Pros: Pretty good pub food. Somewhat eccentric staff (although Tom has been like a father to me). Good prices. A Touchtunes jukebox; which is great because you can download the app and the play "All the Single Ladies" without anyone knowing. Hypothetically, of course. Cons: One of the guys who works there is always wearing a shirt with some reference to anal sex. Also, my biggest complaint: the booths. For one, they have these goddamn ass grooves. I have an ass about 3/4 the size of a normal person and I can't find a comfortable place to seat myself. If you have a normal or large ass you'll be fine. And when you're sitting back-to-back with a person in the next booth the seat sort-of rocks back and forth. It's kinda annoying. Overall, great place. read more
