I've been here before so when I snapped unnecessarily at David K. in my car due to hunger, I decided to drive us here because he's German (he also was stationed in Germany for awhile) so I was like, "this'll do." And it did. I drank the last of the Dinkel and he had some brats. The potato pancakes were my favorite. We both ate our dishes in their entirety and they were huge! Previously I've been here with my parents who enjoyed it. Lots of old people frequent here so, you know what it is! I always say, "if there are many greys, then we stays!" The potato pancakes were crisp. The schlacht Platte was great. Spicy brown mustard and oh boy, you got something there. The pork chop that came with it was cooked in a way I can't describe. I used to be there for years and I don't know what happened to this place, the waitress was a Houdini and I saw her one time in the two that I was there, the price is more than it should be for all the food, not going back ever , and I hope people are doing it as well, service is horrible and foo should be better for the price . It has a beautiful ambiance and great service. The food is very bland. I ordered the salmon with dill sauce and a baked potato and both had no salt or flavor. We went to the Oak Chalet a few months ago for our Anniversary because it was so "highly" recommended by several people my Husband knew. We wanted somewhere romantic and out of the ordinary so we decided on German. I never had it and knew absolutely nothing about this type of cuisine. Really beautiful restaurant from the outside. The gardens almost gave it a feel of being a bit secluded as it's really located on a main road. But, then we walked inside and everything for me from that point on was just a big disappointment. The interior was a complete opposite from it's outside and we had an unpleasant waitress. The main dishes I couldn't even pronounce and had no description of what they actually were. This woman almost seemed a bit annoyed with me that I was asking her to describe the dishes as it would have been nice to know what I was about to eat!! I ordered the Goulash w/ Spaetzle (which is a type of dumpling) since it sounded somewhat safe. Then my Husband ordered his - the Fried Seafood Platter. Real German sounding dish to me!!! The food came quickly but looked as heavy and awful as it tasted. "Salt" is the best adjective I can think of!! I thought I knew what Goulash was and this was nothing like what I was expecting. Dessert was OK, the Homemade Rice Pudding was thick but good. So, this was my first and last experience with German Food. I will not be going back there but I had to give it at least one star just because of the occasion. I think next time we'll go the obvious route, French!! read more

I am in the "everyone else" category because frankly, I thought it sucked. The food was passable, but nothing to strap on the jack boots and run over for. The place was, to me, a big room in light colored woods with a bunch of farm stuff on the walls. There is a smallish bar - which is wide open to the dining area. The menu is mixed German / American. I came here for dinner with family which gave me a chance to sample quite a few different menu items. For appetizer, we had bratwurst with sauerkraut, a hot pretzel, herring salad, and s soup. All of the appetizers were good, yet my favorite was the pretzel. It was huge, crunchy on the outside, and airily soft on the inside. For dinner, I had the veal goulash. The soup was fantastic, and veal was super tender. I highly recommend the dish if it is ever available as a special again. I sampled a bit of everyone's dish. My main takeaway was the Oak Chalet is excellent at serving veal. I wouldn't hesitate to return and try any veal entree. All in all, the food was outstanding! I think the only short fall is that they only had three beers on time; albeit, three good beers: Hofbrau's Hefe, Dunkel, and Original. As a parting tip, be sure to arrive early. My husband and I went to the Oak Chalet for an early dinner yesterday. For the first 40 minutes we were the only people in the restaurant. The service was excellent. We had a very nice waitress who was both attentive and helpful. My husband had the goulash soup and rouladen. I had the onion soup and the sauerbraten. We had spaetzle with our dinner too. You could tell the spaetzle was not homemade but from a bag. They were flavorless and definitely cooked in unsalted water. All the dishes were bland even the sauerbraten. It was as if they decided not to cook with any salt or seasoning whatsoever. It was very disappointing. We had dined here a few years ago and the food was very good. Perhaps we just caught them on a bad day, but I don't think we'll be returning. read more

I went here for my boyfriends moms 60th birthday. The lighting is a little strange and the place looks outdated. Service was very very slow. There was 6 of us and no one was impressed with their dishes. The food was bland. The only thing that was good is the bratwurst appetizer. The check was handwritten and we could barley understand it. It's a great experience every time I'm here. So far I've been here four times and each one is as consistently excellent as the last. The berliner weisse with raspberry is my drink of choice. I usually get either the jagerschnitzel or the wienerschnitzel. They come with a nice plate of three or four pickled salads as an appetizer. The mushroom sauce that's ladled upon the wienerschnitzel is fantastic. I've tried the dumplings that comes with the other dishes and I love dipping that in the mushroom sauce. The servers are so polite and tend to your every need. They give us extra bread and apple sauce every time and do everything to make the experience so wonderful...as if we were at a family dinner. We visited with a reservation for 18 people to celebrate "Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras", this is a large number of guests for anyone kitchen or server to handle on one ticket but fro the server Maureen and the service team this was not a problem. Hats off for GREAT Professional service by the manager and the entire staff. Needless to say, we arrived in several vehicles but when we arrived at 6:15 the restaurant appeared to have full seating, We met several of our guests in the small bar area and had a drink at the table near the bar. At our reservation time, the manager/ host came to the bar to escort the part of our party that had already arrived to our table in the dining area and advised that he will sen our guests over as they arrived. The waitress promptly came over to check if we needed fresh drinks, provide water and bread for the entire table weather seater or yet to arrive, As guests arrived their drink order was taken and promptly presented. During the entire dining experience, a strolling accordion player was present playing classics and requests Once the entire party arrives the server took the dinner order after advising us individually about the 3 specials. The Cold apps were served immediately once the order was entered into the POS for the kitchen to prepare them. The sign of a true professional server is the ability to take and deliver a complete order without resorting to an auction-style delivery or ask who gets this. Each meal was presented to the correct dinner and as ordered. I ordered the specials "Gumbo" as an app and the "Jambalaya" as a main, all orders came with a house salad. My only problem is I finished my main completely and did not have anything to take home. I had room for coffee and the Apple Strudel for dessert that I shared with my wife (this is as good as it was in the old "Sunrise Village", the owner had before it's closing to be replaced with a strip mall and King Kullen now.) We almost closed the restaurant as service was at a pace to allow socializing but not making you feel rushed. I also tasted the chopped liver app, and scallop main. ALL were well presented and lacked nothing extra. If you are in the Bellmore area or NOT make a visit to the Oak Chalet you will not be disappointed they specialize in German food but have the ability in the kitchen prepare other as the Mardi Gras specials show. read more

My parents grew up eating German food. The type of family that considers potato pancake a delicacy and garlic an exotic spice. They, and my husband and I (more adventurous eaters) considered the food, eh. Bland. I agree with Laura M--the lighting is strange and the whole place looks like it stopped in the 1970s-80s. I have no complaints about the service. But when my husband noted that the apple strudel (not brain surgery) tasted old and refrigeratored, we won't be back. What I do mind though, is getting charged $2.75 for a tiny glass of soda...not realizing they will charge for every refill, and ordering 5 soda's between the 2 of us. LOL. I am a very discerning diner, and my wife and I are quite familiar with Zum Stamm Tish and every other German joint on LI proper, and most other restaurants for that matter. We hadn't been back to Oak Chalet in several years and had a night off from the kids. They are getting older, and we were out for the evening and it's close by. So, first impression, VERY CLEAN, they must be doing OK, nice to see, so many are struggling. Wait staff, very nice, German, and knowledgable. Again, Ive been to them all, all have gone down or are closed, this seemed fresher/cleaner than I remembered ... The menu, same old boring German, but great beer selection. Beer fresh, strong, and good, very good, clean taps, NICE start. Bread basket fresh, homemade, great flatbreads. The Lithuanian Rye was really good, thick crust, but not baked on premis ( i asked the waitress). We each order Goulash soup (since it was required way back when at Zum Stamm Tisch) . The goulash soup was very good, not as good as Zum Stamm in their heyday but better than I had there recently. So, Ok, so far good beer and good bread, ok goulash, great atmosphere and service. Forgot that we were getting a salad too. This was simply REALLY good. A chilled plate of FRESH HOMEADE cole slaw, carrot salad, cucumber salad, and green salad with vinagrette. Excellant !! Attention to detail was obvious, crisp. flavors were popping. The dinners were very good, Yaeger Schnitzel was the best piece of veal I've had ANYWHERE in some time, (and I've been to Mario Battali's places not too long ago). This was better. Cooked right, not burned, tender, and tasty. My wife's sauer braten was really good, with killer potato pancakes. My guess is they use prime rib to start with in a pressure cooker, tender, lean, very good. For a change of pace, this was VERY GOOD, and worth a look by anyone craving a good beer and a great German dinner in a very nice setting. The food is cooked like it should be, with meat grease that emphasizes and adds flavor. Americans do not normally cook this way so i could see why one could consider the dishes here sloppy or heavy. But in truth everyone i bring here loves it, I have two Russian friends who ate everything pickled that they offer here. My other friends also love this place and jump straight into the German section of the menu. Dont be stupid and order something you could have anywhere else, go for the slow cooked meats. I was here last week with my wife and mother for my birthday. I am afraid to say that, although I have lived in the area for many years, this is only my second time here. And the first was Christmas over 20 years ago (and that was only because a house fire made eating home impossible), and while I don't remember too much, it was good. First off, it reminded me of the kitchen of German neighbors growing up. Clean, but on the dated side. The server was a woman who reminded me of Dr. Evil's girlfriend, only blond and older. She was not rude, but on the cold side. I had the Wienerschnitzel, my wife had Salmon, and my mother Jaegerschnitzel. Nobody had any complaints about the food. It seemed like authentic, old school German food. As previously stated, the taps are limited, but the Hofbrau was good. It wasn't the best BD dinner, but I will be back to try something else. read more

We always enjoyed this restaurant. The best German food around and an authentic decor. I have to say, I haven't been since covid and I was a little disappointed yesterday when we went for our 43 anniversary dinner. Apparently the policies have changed since we were last there. No bread, no salad just whatever you order comes with potato and vegetable choice. I didn't know the bread and salad were extra now. We sat with our drinks then ate our meal. It was not the grand celebration I had hoped for. On the upside, I was able to finish my whole meal. read more
