My first time here, I got my husband a latte. I left it on the table and he reheated it hours later and it was still great! I got a light roast and tried it black, the flavors were exactly like the description. We also tried a rhubarb custard danish and some other pastry with cream cheese and guava. I love Oakleaf. I am a Northwest transplant and had wanted a new go-to spot as a café and since it's near my work, I gave it a try. They had a Free Tasting Event the other day, featuring a lovely array of new flavors to sample. Everything was delish. I've come here too often to count. They're doing great things and this place is so undersold! Pros: 1) locally-owned!!! :) :) :) 2) The ambiance is bright and warm, charming as hell. 3) Specialties - Summer: Cucumber. Lemonade. Just try it. - Winter: Homemade Hot Cocoa -- They have a honkin' huge homemade marshmallow which you can have toasted atop your hot cocoa. (And they have different flavors of cocoa, too...) Oh yes. Come to me, sweet sugar fix, come to mama. 4) Service staff is warm, friendly, sweet. Also, I think the alum are local grads from Berklee. Always appreciate oakleafs variety especially with vegan options. Every time I've gone in, seems they have at least 5 or 6 vegan treats and they change often. Today I got the vegan banana nut crumb muffin, and to be honest, I wasn't pumped because really, how good can a banana muffin be? I was hungry and had to get back to work so I got it to go, and let me tell you, it was the best freakin muffin I think I've ever had. I can't even begin to describe the state of EUPHORIA. Awesome local cafe and bakery with great staff. For coffee orders, you can select different beans and it is made to order. While I have not ordered a full cake, the decorations and detail look incredible. I have had cupcakes and a number of different pastries (muffins, croissants, biscottis...) and they all taste so fresh. The cupcakes are very innovative, delicious, and moist. Their gingerbread house kit around the holidays is also cute, very well-done, and so good. Pre-pandemic they had amazing breakfast sandwiches and fresh squeezed OJ so I'm hoping once things go back to some sense of normal, they can bring those back. Ok! I've been going back and forth with myself and my partner for the past few days on how I wanted to go about this review. I've decided that I'm going to just let things flow organically. Oakleafs Cakes is VISUALLY AMAZING. For me I have zero complaints with the way the cake looked in fact I was extremely extremely impressed. By far the best cake I've ever seen in person. Beautiful Doc Mcstuffin 2 layer cake for my daughters second birthday. They even put a bandaid on it like we asked. Very thankful for all of the hard work these guys put into make my cake look amazing for a very special day. I drove the cake 45 minutes in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic on 93 on Easter Sunday and the cake had zero flaws when we arrived. The few people I've seen mention the stability of the cakes as a issue please chill out and don't blame others for your irresponsible care of the product. The cake holds up great in the car. Just have your passenger hold the cake LEVEL and Steady. So now for why I had to unfortunately knock off 2 stars. If it was up to me I would be giving this place 5 stars. 4 at the least but my partner has expressed some valid points and in the hopes of making the most honest review possible about our experience with oakleaf I've decided 3 is an appropriate overall grade. I think people order custom cakes for different reasons. Personally I'm the as long as it looks amazing idc how it taste I don't eat much sugar anyways type of guy. My wife not so much... She hated the flavor of both layers of cake. (We for the carrot and vanilla bean) the cake was crumbling apart and lacked the moist melt in your mouth texture that you expect from a cake. Especially a cake that costs you a few hundred bucks. Again I personally don't care but I know some will do sharing this is key. The fondant was not edible, extreme tough and hard to bite into along with the cake that couldn't stay together. We got a few joking complaints about the cake at the party but we had a bunch of cakes so it wasn't a disaster. I was happy we had the beautiful cake as a center piece which is all I really wanted as a dad I could care less how the cake taste but it was in fact a complaint so in all fairness must be factored In. Also my wife had a complaint about doc mcstuffin's noise-- she didn't like how it was popping out she felt oakleaf could have smoothed it in to mold nicely with the rest of the face but I don't know how that works if that was laziness or if that's the proper way to prevent the piece from being damaged. Overall great visually but if you're looking for a great tasting woow you tasting cake, no so much. read more

I haven't tried their cake, but I stopped by for some coffee and a treat. The bakery is pretty easy to find, and has cute and cozy decor. There are a variety of brews to choose from, as well as vegan and non-vegan cakes, cupcakes, muffins, and cookies. There is free wifi and tables to sit at. I stayed and did some homework. I was very pleased with my experience (with the exception of them being sold out of vegan muffins and not having vegan cupcakes ready). I got French roast coffee and a vegan oatmeal raisin cookie. This visit was just a quick run in to make sure that the right inspiration pieces were there for our decorator. Sarah, was absolutely a delight as always. I tried a Cheddar Chive Scone and a Caramel Latte this time and wasn't disappointed. The young man who made my latte did an amazing job! As for that scone? Yeah, just get it. It's light, fluffy, but just filling enough to get a boost to your morning. The flavor is well balanced and delicate and this might have been better if I'd asked to warm it up. My friend and I have been meaning to try something from this bakery since they opened in the South End/Fenway area late last year. We finally got a chance to drop in today to share the homemade chocolate covered cherry pop tart. It was delicious! The cherries inside the pop tart were tart and countered by the sweet chocolate on the outside. The pastry itself was flaky and buttery, but not greasy. I can't wait to try other desserts from this bakery! I also noticed the cake decorating class going on in the back of the bakery and hope that I'll get a chance to try that too. read more

I paid $125 and waited a week for an 8 inch cake so dry and tasteless it was inedible. The icing was separating from the cake as it was being cut. The cake was breaking up and crumbling as you try to get a fork full. There was not the 'moist' and 'flavorful' experience I thought I paid for or expected - considering all the positive reviews. This cake was purchased for a celebration of my nieces elopement. I selected a red velvet cake with beautiful sage green fondant and ecru stencil flowers. It looked fantastic. Unfortunately, that did not help the eating experience. It was embarrassing -- to sit watching people try to eat enough to make it appear they liked it - but leaving all but two bites out of their slices. I should have taken pictures to show the full dessert plates being taken to the kitchen to clean up. Did everything requested by the bakery - making sure to 'leave it out' before serving. (They told me to not put it in the refrigerator and just leave it out) Picked it up at noon and cut into it at 9pm. I will never purchase a cake from Oakleaf or recommend anyone to trust this bakery with their wedding cake. Awful-Dry-Tasteless-Beware! Cute little cake shop. When I walked in I was impressed by the variety of cupcakes and muffin flavors. The shop has a good selection of cupcakes (around $4 each), coffee, teas and pastries. They are all so beautifully presented; however, I have been let down by the taste. The two cupcakes I tasted were very dry, and the icing in the carrot flavored cupcake was somewhat bittersweet (unusual for carrot cakes). As a vegan you may find a lot of cake options... and I noticed from their menu that you can custom order. Also, if you are getting a cake /sweets for a special occasion , you may walk out with candles and greeting cards, which they also sell here. I really wanted to like this place. I had passed by it twice on my way to a coffee shop and the cakes on display in the windows looked so amazing that I knew I had to try one. I had the vanilla strawberry and the red velvet. I didn't care for the vanilla strawberry- the cake was dry and the strawberry icing tasted like whipped cream instead of a denser buttercream frosting which I prefer. The red velvet, however, was much better and I thought that cake was much more moist with a creamier frosting (also I guess you can't really go wrong with a cream cheese frosting!). At the end of the day I gave it 3 stars because it was an underwhelming experience and certainly not worth the $3 they charge per cupcake. read more

This review is specific to their cake decorating classes. Not recommended. The classes are taught by bakers who are also busy doing other things and leave you alone throughout the class. One also was disdainful of the paying customers taking the class because they were "wasting her time". The space is cramped, making it hard to see the demos. They make you stand up for the full three hours, and there are no breaks or refreshments except extra frosting and cake pieces. The timing of the class was poor. We had to try and watch an instructor make frosting for an hour and then the class time went over while we were rushed to decorate our cakes at the end. It was also difficult to get different colors of frosting because everyone was given one color to use and then told to just work it out if they wanted to get one of the other colors. The classes are a nice idea, but poorly executed. I would not shell out the money for them as you could learn just as much watching a YouTube video. read more

Horrible experience from Oakleaf today. Ordered a cake for my boss's son's birthday this afternoon, I picked up the cake by 12:30. Everything looked great! Then! I put the cake carefully in the car and drove really careful without even hitting the brake or gas, the bottom of the cake started to fall apart! I was so surprisingly shocked!!!! I was so upset and called them and emailed them some pics, then they accused me of hitting the cake with something or dropping it, excuse me, ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?! That cake was a nearly $600 cake my boss picked for her son, do you think I would really drop the cake in the car?! They said they didn't know if they can fix it, and I do not have time to waste with them. Brought the whole cake to a bakery in brookline online, they opened the fondant, cake fell apart immediately, they said there was nothing I could do to the cake, only two plastic support and one wooden stick in the middle, with sticker still on the stick?! Sarah and her team designed a custom cake for my wife's 50th birthday party. Oakleaf created a lifelike Maine Loon cake. It was so lifelike that most of the attendees didn't even realize that it was cake. Coloring was beautiful, and the details incredible, from the glowing red eyes to the tail feathers. Great cafe - made me an avid cupcake eater & iced tea drinker. Overall the ambience of the place is always great and cute, though they run out a lot of their top hits by late afternoon (still plenty of things to eat by closing however). Service is a mix bag: once given a free scone and once they forgot and mixed up the whole order. But it's really the food that stands out here. This is my favorite place to study because it's so close to my apartment. I usually get a cup of coffee and a cookie. I'd actually argue Pavement or even Starbucks coffee is better, but you always have to wait to sit because they're packed with students. Usually I go to Oakleaf around 9-10am and sit at one of the six tables. I read or do homework until a little past noon when they start to get really busy. While the coffee isn't the best, I have tried a variety of their goodies which is what they're known for. I love their cookies! Pick any of them, they're all delicious. I've also had the blueberry and strawberry breakfast bars, which are perfect when you're craving something sweet in the morning. I think the cupcakes are hit and miss. Some days they're dry and crumbly, but other days they're amazing. (I love Georgetown Cupcakes, if you want to use that as a benchmark) But on the good days... they're SO good. Delicious enough that I'm willing to play Russian roulette every time I order cupcakes! read more

I saw a lot of their work on instagram and on their website and I was really impressed with their work. I decided to order a cake for my boyfriend's birthday and I was not that impressed with the work . I felt like it looked rushed and not as detailed as I have seen some of their other work online. Some of the cake was partially not filled in and the fondant was not rolled thinly enough. The cake itself was chocolate with a raspberry butter cream which I really ordered a raspberry ganache. The service was not that friendly and they did accommodate a delivery change but when the owner got there she was not very friendly and seemed to be bothered. A friend and I needed some coffee before taking a late night drive up to Maine. We just needed coffee, but we ended up getting some nice coffee. I got the Sidama roast and it was really good. I love my coffee sweet so I added some creamer. The coffee had a berry like tinge of taste, which I really enjoyed. It was cold and rainy outside, so the coffee was that much more refreshing. Of course, I noticed all the cakes and cupcakes. Always on the look out for vegan/lactose-free treats, I asked about all their vegan options. At 9pm on a Friday, im happy to report they had at least 4 very appetizing vegan options, including a cupcake and some cookies. The barista let me know that they were always changing it up so expect a diversity of vegan options if you can check them out on multiple occasions. Adorable. I love this cake shop. I want to win the lottery so I can get a new cake designed for every holiday for the rest of my life. The cakes are beautiful and the artistry is incredible. There are two large photo books that you can look through of wedding cakes and birthday cakes- each is more beautiful than the next! Also seem to be pretty reasonable as far as custom cakes though (but too be honest I don't know much about this). Came in here to escape the cold one evening after dinner and ordered a hot chocolate with almond milk with one of their homemade marshmallows. The coffee is good but the cupcakes and cheesecakes are very dry and not very flavourful.

I was so exited to try this bakery. I bought several things..... A Birthday Cupcake, (3 days old)-dry, not good. A lemon blueberry cupcake that has NO flavor, greasy frosting on top and is very dry. And a Brownie that tastes dry and old. I also got a piece of banana chocolate chip bread- tasty- even though I asked if it had nuts and the girl said, no. The one thing that was really yummy was the vegan peanut butter cookie- I'm not vega but it was not to sweet and tasted fresh. read more

I've had several of their desserts on different occasions. I have to say their cupcakes are definitely their better baked goods but they're on the smaller side and not worth the price. I've also had the Confetti Sugar Cookie and a brownie and was incredibly disappointed. The cookie had a weird after taste and an overwhelming butter taste and I thought the chocolate flavor in the brownie was severely lacking. If you're looking for cookies, Panera's are better. I've heard great things about their loaf breads and poptarts so maybe I'll give them a shot. read more
