Ever since our aborted pandemic wedding Oakleaf has been the go-to source for special occasion cakes for my wife and I. We have never been disappointed. This month they created a custom cake to celebrate a car restoration project that was finally completed after a year and a half of work. The cake was beautiful and very tasty - it was a big hit with all the mechanics who worked on the car. The cake was adorned with a picture of the car that was simply amazing, they even got the color correct inside and out. The folks at Oakleaf and very responsive and easy to work with. My (now) husband and I had a wonderful time working with Oakleaf. Liz was fantastic to work with -- we sent her ideas of what we wanted in our cake. We were fairly specific in that we wanted Fall themed with owls as toppers wearing baseball caps (one forward and one backward with the SF Giants logo and the Boston Red Sox logo). It was a strange request that turned out beautifully and totally quirky and us! Aesthetics aside, the cake was delicious. We did alternating layers of chocolate with oreo buttercream and yellow cake with blueberry buttercream. We also did cupcakes with the same flavors. I needed a birthday cake for my dad's 70th and was looking for something to really wow the guests at his birthday celebration. The team at Oakleaf did an amazing job from the ease of communication, helpfulness with my cake selection, and the final product. This beautiful cake was such a disappointment. It was $70 and big enough for about 10 people. We followed the instructions and let it sit at room temperature for 4 hours. nonetheless the cake was very dry and the frosting was greasy. We will not order from this bakery ever again. read more

Very easy online ordering and pick-up process on a designer cake (which is not easy to find around here)! We got the designer Batman cake for my son's birthday, and it was a hit with the toddler crew. Unfortunately, the fondant and Batman decor was way too thick to be edible (like a solid 1/3 inch of black dyed fondant) and made it even a challenge to slice. The buttercream was dry and flaked off from the cake. We followed instructions (left out 8 hours). Our cake ended up being one of my favorite parts of our wedding! When we walked into the venue and I saw it for the first time, I think I squealed with delight. We did a tasting/consultation in advance (and we actually had two separate appointments because we wanted to try the funfetti cake and trust me - it was worth it!) and ended up going with a four layer cake for our wedding of about 120 guests (we had estimated high at 150 before we got our RSVPs back). Our flavors were funfetti (SO GOOD) and vanilla and we chose a mix of lemon, raspberry and blueberry icing and vanilla fondant. Thankfully, our wedding coordinator sent us back to the hotel with a sampling so we could try each and every flavor combo (since it's really true that you barely eat at your own wedding!). We saved and froze the whole top layer and I'm already looking forward to eating it on our anniversary. Worth noting, we also got an assortment of vegan cupcakes for a couple of our dairy free guests and they were also a huge hit! We also got a custom birthday cake for my niece since our wedding fell on her fourth birthday and we heard that was delicious as well :) The bakery itself is so cute and they have a delicious variety of pastries, cupcakes and coffees. read more

This review is based on their customer service/ my ordering experience. I reached out on June 3rd with an inquiry for a custom cake for a corporate event. I specifically shared that I was extremely flexible and could even do a macaron or cupcake tower, but would love to speak with someone to get their expert opinion on what would work best for our party size. Since this is a corporate event, I wasn't too worried about meeting the minimum spend- instead, I was more interested in making sure I ordered the perfect cake for the occasion and really wanted to speak with someone. After a few emails exchanges later, I kept insisting for a phone call, but it seemed like the bakery didn't care to pick up the phone and call. Instead they just wanted to make it clear that their minimum spend on a cake is $350 and they don't deliver (with certain exceptions). They will also charge an additional fee for consultants going back and forth with me on customizing my order - which I was still waiting for. I really did not appreciate how they made the interaction all about the money, and didn't care to ask once what I actually wanted. I called them twice and there was no option to speak with a live person, when finally I emailed them back for the 4th time asking if they don't have the time for a phone call they should just let me know, so I can place an order with another bakery. Finally, a full day later (after hours) I get a call from someone and because I am not working around the clock, it went to voicemail. I immediately followed up with an email sharing that I had now placed an order with another bakery for close to $1,000 because they had taken the time to hear me out and understand my needs which Oakleaf just wanted to talk about their $350 minimum, additional fees and no delivery. I did mention in my email, that they should not avoid requests for phone calls because sometimes customers need their expert advice. I got the most nonchalant response to my email, which further proved how little they cared about this corporate order. I will never be placing an order with this company and they just lost a large corporate client they could have had a long term partnership with. It's about how you treat your guests, no matter where they come from. I am so glad I saw this side of Oakleaf.. Furthermore, if I am spending close to $1,000 on a cake, do I not get to speak with a live person about my requirements?? Is that too much to ask? My email exchanges were with 3 different representatives- I can't even imagine how terribly messages would've been communicated from one person to another at this bakery. It took 6 days to get a voicemail from them. They are extremely money minded and don't care about your needs read more

I ordered a vegan chocolate cake for my best friend's birthday from Oakleaf Cakes and let me tell you, it may have been the best chocolate cake I've ever had. First of all, as a Chinese girl that grew up on Chinese bakery style cakes with whipped cream as frosting, regular frosting grosses me out. Might as well be eating spoonfuls of sugar, okay? But Oakleaf's buttercream frosting is PERFECT. So airy and not sweet, which is important to me. Then came the cake. Oakleaf Cakes made a wedding cake for a very special friend this past weekend. The bride and groom asked for a "Nightmare Before Christmas" theme. From the initial contact, through the tasting, design and delivery, the staff was professional, prompt, responsive and creative. The cake was three layers, and we we able to have three flavors,carrot and red velvet with vanilla buttercream, and vanilla with Nutella buttercream. the cake was lovely, exactly what the bride and groom wanted, and delicious. Amanda opened her original location across the street from my home and business in Winthrop, MA, and I was always impressed with her work, I am so happy to see her business thriving and was excited to use her shop for my assistant and friend's wedding. I was so excited to get this cake. When I got it, I was impressed with how beautiful it looked. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the taste, particularly the frosting. It was super bland and had a gluey texture. It barley tasted like anything independently of the cake. The cake, however, was moist and well flavored. If you want you cake to look good, I would give this place a try. If you want a delicious cake, I would would keep searching for better taste. This is such a cute little bakery, and it's open until 11pm too! I came here after a BSO concert, and it proved to be the perfect place for a late night treat. I came just in time for their adorable Halloween-themed offerings and chose a zombie brains cupcake (vanilla bean cake with strawberry buttercream and cherry pie filling), but I was definitely debating the lemon meringue ghost as well! The one cupcake I've had here was delish! The cake is more fluffy than moist and is the perfect sweetness. The buttercream was also very smooth and not cloyingly sweet. There was also a gummy cherry ribbon that bisected the "brain" hemispheres that added a bit of textural realism - slimy, like I would imagine real brains to be. Their prices are standard - $3.50 for a cupcake, and the girl and the counter was super nice. I will definitely be back! Oakleaf has me won over. read more

I live down the street in one of the dorms. I moved to Boston this fall for college, and this week had been feeling a bit homesick. I thought a cupcake might cheer me up, so I walked down to Oakleaf. I decided to try both vanilla cupcakes: the vegan vanilla with raspberry icing and the vanilla birthday cupcake. BOTH WERE PHENOMENAL. I'm someone who usually wipes all of the icing off of a cupcake (I prefer whipped cream), but the raspberry vegan icing was so flavorful that I ended up devouring the whole thing. I went right on to the bday cupcake which had what tasted like a whipped cream/icing hybrid on top. Both were very moist and not overly sweet. And... I feel a little less homesick. Please stop posting that Oak Leaf makes vegan wedding cakes. They don't. I contacted Oak Leaf looking for a vegan wedding cake. My memory is a bit hazy, but I probably did it because they advertise verbatim on their website that they do exactly that. I get an email back filled to the brim with shenanigans that you can't make a tiered vegan wedding cake. It's impossible. You need to have non-vegan layers or the cake will fall apart. And even then you can't make one big enough to feed a large amount of people. You need to make a small... non-vegan cake... and then supplement the rest with cupcakes. And the sun will crash into the moon and time and space will collapse if you try otherwise. For reference: none of this is true. I ended up going to a handful of other bakeries outside the city who said that a tiered vegan wedding cake was no problem. When I told them this story, every single one of them asked "Was it Oak Leaf?" and laughed out loud about them. We had an incredible cake make elsewhere that was so big our guests couldn't even finish it. We did not need a pork chop layer for stability. We did not need to supplement cupcakes. Oak Leaf has no clue what they're doing, and are apparently a laughing stock in the industry. Edit: To the owner's response... Nothing I've written here is untrue. And you're probably right. You probably did "do your best," and it was horrendously inadequate. read more

Oakleaf has solid coffee that they brew per cup. I go for the Ethiopian light roast. A solid and frills free brew. Oakleaf is a bakery that specializes in custom cakes and there are examples of their fondant artistry throughout the store. As such it was ironic that the pastries were so underwhelming. I figured this would be their wheelhouse but they were forgettable. The Nutella cupcake has winning frosting. It captures that chocolate Nutella flavor without being too sweet. The problem was with the cake, which was dense and bready. Overall, an acceptable cupcake but not one I would order again, and definitely not in the league of Georgetown. Conceptually, I liked the idea of their banana bread, they took a classic treat and added chocolate chunks for taste and texture. The execution was disappointing, the banana bread was dry and crumbly. As such, the texture was completely off and the flavors didn't come together. They had a Free Tasting Event the other day, featuring a lovely array of new flavors to sample. Everything was delish. I've come here too often to count. They're doing great things and this place is so undersold! Pros: 1) locally-owned!!! :) :) :) 2) The ambiance is bright and warm, charming as hell. 3) Specialties - Summer: Cucumber. Lemonade. Just try it. - Winter: Homemade Hot Cocoa -- They have a honkin' huge homemade marshmallow which you can have toasted atop your hot cocoa. (And they have different flavors of cocoa, too...) Oh yes. Today I got the vegan banana nut crumb muffin, and to be honest, I wasn't pumped because really, how good can a banana muffin be?
