This was our first time stopping here at the smokehouse. We're truck drivers and we travel through here often and may give it another chance but was very disappointed with our food. It was not worth the price at all. The service was great, the restaurant had a buffet and there was a gift shop and bakery. The place was packed so we were excited. I ordered the battered mushrooms for app. Hubby ordered the bbq ribs and sauasage, I ordered ribeye for my meal. The mushrooms were moldy, the batter was bland, it came with 2 ranch cups. The steak was cooked to perfection, though there was more fat on it than meat. It was tasty, no sauce needed. The baked potato came with imitation bacon bits, shredded cheese, chives and sour cream on the side so it was not melted when I put them on the potato (it wasn't hot enough to melt.) Hubby had ribs that were falling off the bone with the bbq sauce on the side and it was pretty good. However, his sides were bland. (mac n cheese tasted like milk and thinned cheese) potato salad was plain. Included are some pictures. Mike Hebert and his wife set a new standard for going above and beyond in service when they decided to leave their warm home late at night, go out into the frigid weather, open up the restaurant, fire up the fryer, and prepare and deliver enough food to feed our El Paso Rhinos Hockey team army who had traveled all day and were many times at a standstill, trying to get home on icy roads. I think many of the restaurant's negative reviews were based on guests' buffet experiences, which isn't completely fair. Buffets are not as good as food served to-order. How can you expect gourmet flavor from mass produced food that sits on warmers for hours on end? My wife and I went to lunch and ordered BBQ brisket sandwiches. We didn't expect a lot, which is what we have been getting lately. BBQ places have gotten chintzy with their meat servings. They give us a lot of bun and just a small amount of meat and charge a lot for it, about $10 a sandwich. We rarely even chance going out to BBQ anymore because of this problem. Our sandwiches were $8.50 and they were HUGE! There was so much meat I have another sandwich later. It was good and the service was efficient, friendly, and prompt. Wow - great stop! We didn't opt for the buffet but checked out the nice down-home menu. Fried pork (schnitzel) was terrific as were the perfectly cooked French fries (crispy outside, soft airy inside). BBQ turkey sandwich was big and perfectly smoked and sauced. My husband and I live in Conroe and make trips to San Antonio frequently. Oak ridge has become our dinner stop on our way to SA. We really enjoy the buffet. The fried chicken is amazing! The seasoning is very good. My 4 year loves it too. Fridays they serve fried catfish and it's also delicious. Every time we go the services is very down home family atmosphere. The ladies are friendly and make sure we are comfortable and enjoying our dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant! Our waitress Maria was awesome! read more

I was driving through and stopped here for lunch because of the multiple advertisements/bill boards, the down home look of the restaurant exterior and the number of vehicles in the parking lot. I had high hopes walking in because the buffet had fried chicken, ham, ribs and various other options. Boy was I disappointed. Food was not only very bland, it just didn't have good flavor. The staff only spoke to me when I spoke to them and even then i felt like I was putting them out. They were all very short with me. I definitely did not feel welcomed. When I went to pay, I was shocked to find that my mediocre (at best and I think I'm being generous) weekday lunch buffet was $12.95. I paid wished them a good day and walked out. I have been eating at Oakridge since the 1960's and I was always very happy with everything, but I suppose all good things must end because although the food was ok (not like it used to be) the service has declined, and I went to the cashier to pay and they charged me $2.75 for a cup of hot water! Stopped here on a Sunday midday and it had lots of diners but plenty of staff and seating. We did not try the $12.89 all you can eat buffet but it looked great. My cheeseburger was perfection and the onion rings cooked lightly and crisp like they should be. My husband had the sauerkraut and sausage plate and loved the tender sausage so much we bought extra and took some home. The sauerkraut was german and homemade- yum. I love stopping in here on the way to San Antonio or Austin, as I always order some type of kolache. Their sausage kolaches are better than their fruit or cream cheese ones in my opinion. I put Weikel's and Oakridge's kolaches in a side by side taste test and Weikel's wins easily. The pineapple in the pineapple kolache for instance seems to be a canned jelly sugary pineapple mixture, where as at Weikel's its much fresher. Also, their dough isn't the best either. So in summary, if you stop to get a kolache, try their sausage kolaches. I've never eaten inside the restaurant, but maybe I will one day when I have time. read more

Stopped in last Friday for an early dinner/ late lunch. Don't let the name fool you, Whataburger is more of a smokehouse than Oakridge. I took my son in thinking we could get some kind of BBQ based on the name, and boy, was I wrong. That was the start of the bad experience. I felt like I was eating at a nursing home. The walls and decorations are covered in at least an inch of dust. The table was sticky. Some advice would be to change out the rag you wipe the tables down with every couple of tables. The whole place just needs to be gutted and pressure washed. At almost 40 years old, I was the youngest adult in there by about 30 years. That may be why the food was so bland. Use some spices. I ordered the chicken fried chicken with okra and mac n cheese. Mac was watery and tasted like something you might get in a frozen TV dinner box. Chicken couldn't have had any salt on it. White gravy basically tasted like flour and milk. The okra was the only decent food I finished. I couldn't stomach eating more than a quarter of the rest. We also had the mozzarella sticks for an appetizer. Please do yourself a favor and serve that with marinara sauce. Only weirdos eat cheese stcks with ranch. Lastly, you need to do some training with your staff. Sugar attracts more flies than salt. You won this round by getting way more money than you deserved. I will not be back. read more

We stopped here on our way to Hondo. A buffet was advertised. They have a typical Texas diner menu with barbecue. I had the salad bar which was decent. The potato, macaroni, and other salads were very bland, but the lettuce and the tomatoes were fresh. The buffet looked pretty pitiful. There were beans, watery looking mashed potatoes, fried chicken, barbecued chicken, fettuccine chicken Alfredo, and sausage. There were a few other sides available, but they were unremarkable, and I can't remember them. We did not order the buffet since it looked poor. When the waitress took our order I asked what was on the buffet since several items were undetectable. She said fried chicken, smothered chicken, and sausage. Just go look. It was on our way out that I heard the hostess naming the items which is how I knew what they were. The barbecued chicken didn't look like any I'd ever seen. My husband ordered the fried chicken, and she asked him what pieces he wanted. He said a breast and wing. I ordered the chicken fried steak. When the food arrived my husband had a thigh and a wing. It took about 15 minutes to get the waitress back, and she acted like it was a breast. She brought him a breast, and it was okay.
