My girlfriend and I stopped in Dalton on a recent road trip and were happy to find (with a little Yelp Help) this home cookin' gem. Despite our rolling in just before closing time, the service was friendly and the food was great. We both enjoyed the turkey and dressing (she's a vegetarian, but it was so good she changed teams for the night) and the creamed corn was especially good. I had lunch here today. I'm a fan of the traditional southern fare. You have to try to the Brunswick stew, which is a Georgia original. I ordered the vegetable plate and was not at all disappointed. The restaurant is a little crowded and noisy, but it was lunch time so that is to be expected and I understand that it is always that way. The turn-around rate on orders is quick and seems to be very efficient. They have a large array of options for lunch and breakfast with some dessert options and very affordable prices. I will certainly stop by again on my next trip to Dalton. I really liked it. read more

We stopped in for lunch on our way to Nashville. I picked this place based on the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews. I was soooo disappointed with my meal -- the soggy fries and poorly seasoned chicken just killed it. I'm just going to assume I came on an off day, because there's no way a place with so many good reviews could be pumping out crappy food like I had on a regular basis. People were raving about this place, but it was just alright. Had the shrimp plate and I will admit the shrimp were big and taste delicious! The sides were where they came up short. Macncheese was dry, onion rings were what Texans call tanglers or shoe-strings, broccoli casserole was a soggy mess, but the fried squash was pretty good. My friend had the roasted chicken, and again, they offer BBQ sauce because it is so dry. Better bet is to go to the Engine Room. read more

Farm fresh eggs, thick cut bacon you can still see the sizzle on, fresh fruit, biscuits so light they'll do a Ray Walton and levitate right off the plate. My resident grit expert declares these are the best on the planet with cheese. Coffee is full bodied so I hear. Service is attentive, pleasant with a touch of swag. Folks here are proud of their work, happy to be here and it shows. Doughnuts were better when the Davis Bake Shop was next door. But most of the Oakwood is as it had been with the addition of good bobbycue. Johnny was a fine man but bbq was not his forte. Cherry pie is as good as it ever was. Today I was in town for a mediation around the corner. Came in for a late lunch around 1:45 because of the stellar reviews. I had the cube steak, black eyed peas, and greens with unsweetened tea. The place is clean and comfortable. Food was good, but a couple of points... the service wasn't awesome. The staff was lovely and friendly, but slow, my tea sat empty for several minutes before I could get someone's attention and our food was served (server walked away) and we had no silverware. Also, my food could've been a bit warmer. I hate it because all of the other reviewers had such lovely things to say. We decided to head past all the chain places by the highway and I am glad we did. The Oakwood Cafe is a gem in a small north Georgia town. This is home cookin at its best. Our waiter Jeffery was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the half rack of ribs with corn casserole and baked beans. Also had some excellent Brunswick stew. My meal was top notch. My wife had the chicken salad sandwich and she was disappointed. The meat was pulverized to mush so the texture was not to here liking and her fries were cold. Found this place through Yelp - now too far from the highway to Downtown Dalton. The exterior and interior were homey and rustic, give you that feel of stepping back in time. The server was cheery and cordial. I'd ordered the barbecue pork, fresh fruit, and green beans with a yeast roll on the side. The green beans were standard cafeteria fare, nothing to write home about. The fruit was indeed fresh and ripe, not sugary or syrupy. The barbecue pork was better than I thought it'd be, given that it's not a barbecue restaurant. For less than $7, it was a good deal, and I could eat there again. I'm a little more partial to actual family-run diners that serve a smaller, manageable menu with authentically-seasoned southern food items, and this kind of lacked in that regard. We went on a Monday for dinner (only one I know of open for all 3 meals) and the food and service were wonderful. They were a little overwhelmed by all the choices, and both had ribs. Being Fathers Day weekend, I was told that this was my weekend and I got to plan where we eat, what we do, etc. I wanted to choose something different and when I came across Oakwood Cafe on yelp and saw all of the terrific reviews, I knew that our Saturday would include a drive down to Dalton. We were all very happy with our orders. I had the BBQ, potato salad, cole slaw and onion rings. My wife had the veggie plate and I understand the corn casserole was fantastic. The kids were very pleased as well. The four of us each ordered desert and each of us got something different. The only disappointment was the red velvet cake that my daughter ordered. It was very dry. My banana pudding was excellent as was my wife's peach cobbler but it could have used some ice cream on top. My other daughter said her chocolate pie was great but she wouldn't share. This is a great place that I hope to visit whenever we drive through Dalton. read more

This was a cute little find on our way south to FL. We try to avoid chain restaurants whenever traveling, so that we can taste something local and unique. This is a cute restaurant. They have some sandwiches and dinners, but the main thing is to order meat with side dishes. Each day they have different meats and sides available. You can pick all sides or meat with two or three sides. Our meat choices were pot roast and pulled pork. Our sides included corn casserole, mashed potatoes, baked beans, mac n cheese, and cheese grits. The corn casserole was good and unique baked with cream cheese, which was good. The baked beans were also unique and tasted like there may have been pickles in them, but our waitress wasn't sure about that. Their desserts also looked good, but we were full after our late meal. The food came out quick and was nice and hot! This is a cute cafe in downtown Dalton. Parking is fairly easy for a weekday afternoon lunch. Inside, there is TONS of seating. For $7.99, you receive one meat and two "veggies" of your choice with either a roll or cornbread. Not a bad price for the amount of food you receive. The BBQ pork was better than expected for a cafe. The pork was pretty moist but was borderline too flavorful. The roll was a good way to mellow out the flavor. The mac and cheese reminded me of Ryan's or Golden Corral and still satisfied my craving. The fried okra was probably my favorite dish of the three. The breading was light and the okra was thoroughly cooked, although I wished it was warmer when it came out. (It was the first thing I ate.) Also, they had this cinnamon butter spread that was quite good with the roll. I'm pretty sure this was suppose to go on the sweet potato my friend ordered, but it definitely paired well with other items. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. The Oakwood Cafe used to have great food but the quality has declined dramatically in the past few months. Restaurant needs not to be a fast food restaurant but a quality food one! Have had breakfast and lunch there recently and it was just not good. Couldn't eat most it. Servers are trying their best. Don't know what the problem is but it is no longer one of my favorite go to restaurants in downtown Dalton. Great service. Food was delicious. Moist and tender chicken tenders. My husband loved the chicken livers. The chicken and dumplings were as good as my mom's. We liked it so much we came back the following morning for breakfast before heading home to the Midwest. Pecan pancakes were so good. The grits were yummy. Staff was friendly and attentive.
