What a cool concept!! Glad I got to try this place over July 4th when visiting SB. So many unique breads to choose from. I got the shiitake mushroom, almond date, pumpkin seed, whole wheat focaccia, and charcoal sesame. Had to eat this throughout a week and amongst 6 people. The loaves are pretty massive haha Absolutely loved the shiitake and the whole wheat focaccia and second fave would be the charcoal sesame. Others were good but I prefer the more savory type of breads and they did an excellent job with flavor and each was true to description. Hope I can stop by on my next trip and try some more out in addition to my faves :) read more

When I read about this place online, I knew I had to come to get their bread when I was in town. I got their supersedes bread and shitake mushroom & shallots sourdough. They were both delish. I froze the supersedes bread so I can enjoy them next week. It's packed with pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, and very hearty. Shitake sourdough was so good that we ate it in one day. They use organic ingredients which is a must for flour and the quality is very good. I will have to come back to get more when I am in town next time! read more

Stumbled on this bakery during a PCH road trip. There was a short line but sooo worth the wait. They had a great variety of homemade breads and cookies and it was really fun to see them working in the open kitchen. We got a couple loaves (the jalapeño cheddar was my favorite) and grabbed some cheese from a small shop before heading to the beach for sunset. It was the perfect road trip snack! read more

I was excited to try this place while visiting Santa Barbara. It had been recommended by a friend, plus the reviews were so high. But once I returned to my lodgings with my bread loaves I realized that every single one was burnt in some way. Not sure if I went on an off day but I doubt it's healthy to eat charred bread, plus it wasn't appetizing or appealing. Not to mention, the breads were quite pricey. I don't mind paying extra for higher quality goods but I felt they had given me inferior products since I had to cut away the burned bits. Would make sure to inspect your bread carefully before leaving the store. read more

Cute bakery with great assortment of bread. We were hoping they had bagels and vegan cream cheese for our road trip but unfortunately they did not. We did try the seed cookie which was amazing and very filling. Also loved the cinnamon rolls. They had an assortment of plant based cream cheeses that I would have loved to try. Delightful little bakery! I was excited to find vegan pastry options and fresh hearty seeded breads. I got a hygge bun, a superseed cookie, and a pumpkin seed loaf. The hygge bun was absolutely amazing!! It was by far my favorite treat that I had during my weekend trip to Santa Barbara. It's like a cinnamon roll but not the typical American overly-sugary cinnamon roll slathered in icing that I'm not a fan of. This was the perfect level of sweetness, had a lovely cinnamon flavor, and was deliciously moist and gooey inside. The superseed cookie was also delicious! It was pleasantly not overly sweet and had a nice seedy flavor without tasting solely like a mouthful of seeds. Such wonderful vegan pastries! Surprised I have yet to write a review for a bakery that saved me during the pandemic (nothing than brightens a day more than Bread and Buns) Oat Bakery is a gem hidden, but very well-known, in DT Santa Barbara. The line is always long but so worth it. My absolute favorites and go-tos are Date Almond Bun, Hygge Bun (ya try to not mess up that pronunciation) , and the super-seed cookie. I'm talking MOUTH WATERING, what dreams are made of good. So why 4 stars? On the numerous occasions I have been here - I won't even say how many times to spare me that embarrassment- They are NOT consistent. You'll either get a bun with TONS of almonds, dates or whatever they promise, a BIG cookie , OR you'll be madly disappointed the next week when you pay the same amount for a subpar version of what you waited to eat all week for breakfast. My suggestion is this- look at what is good. If it looks pathetic that day, chances are it tastes as such too. I'll be of course returning, hoping for that fully loaded bun, cookie, or bread. However, I wouldn't be surprised if I have to go back and ask for my soggy, undercooked bread to be replaced. read more

I love their bread !!!! And they have these things called hyyge buns that are like lightly sweet little rolls, they are so amazing. They also have delicious homemade breads with mushrooms ,shallots plain and a seed bread I don't believe has any flour or gluten but I'm not sure.They also Carry these vegan "cheese" type spreads maybe they are cashew that are so tasty. read more

If you're in the area come here and get some bread! They have gluten free options. Their super seeded bread is delicious. The shiitake bread was tasty. The only thing I would pass on is the "chips," If they were seasoned I would probably try them again. This place is a must try. read more

Dear Oat Bakery, Thank you for providing one of the only breads that I can eat. I have an allergy to refined sugar that makes it impossible to buy bread in a store. Your breads are marvelous. Super moist and amazing. I also was in awe of the Super Seed Cookie the first time I tried it. Again, can't buy cookies because of the allergy so what a special treat. However, I will have to say that the cookies have been hit and miss. Sometimes they simply don't taste good at all! Way off to the point of throwing it out but when you pay $4.00 for a cookie plus a tip you choke it down anyway. I talked to a friend about this and she suggested that dates go bad and that was probably why the cookies were sometime not so good. Also it seems the consistency of recipe for this one seems to be off. The 1st time I had it the sweetness was amazing and the cinnamon notes were just awesome subsequent purchases were just so, so in this regard. Hoping that you can do something to move your customer line a little faster. Arriving at 9:08 and having to stand in line for 30 minutes for 1 item is a bit of a bummer. This is even being number 8 in line. I would imagine that you are loosing a great deal of business because people just don't want to stand there that long. Why you started serving coffee I will never understand! This addition only exacerbates the long SLOW line. I wish I had a suggestion how to streamline your process at checkout. Maybe your brilliant bakers and staff can come up with a solution. Seems like you might need a second window or a larger facility. Not a bad problem to have. :-) Maybe ask the customer if they are having coffee 1st thing when they walk up. Call out to someone else to make the coffee while the nice young woman at the front continues with the bread order. Thanks again! read more

This is my new go to for bread in Santa Barbara! Honestly this place has some of the best bread I have ever had and I cannot recommend it more. As soon as i got out of the car outside of the shop, I immediately smelled fresh bread and it smelled so good. Their sourdough loaves are perfectly moist and fluffy on the inside and nice and hard on the outside. I have tried their sage and garlic loaf, focaccia, and mushroom loaf. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything that you choose it's all outstanding. This is a pickup spot so if you get a pastry there is no where to sit but perfect to take to the beach for a picnic. Best find in Santa Barbara!!! We were lucky to be staying a couple doors down and happened to walk into this cute little bakery. The women that work there are just so lovely and you get to see them at work making their breads. We really enjoyed the sweets. They use a date paste instead of sugar and later I found out they are also vegan. You MUST try the Hygge bun which is like a little cinnamon roll baked fresh daily and warm from the oven. We went every day for breakfast and even brought some home to put in the freezer. This was like a dream for me because I cannot have sugar or dairy so I usually am not able to get sweets. We were on a overnight trip to Santa Barbara during COVID and walked by this place. People lined up to get their breads. Saw the prices and walked away. The next day I was walking by again and on a whim, picked up a loaf of the sourdough. Let me tell you, the best freaking loaf of bread I have ever had in my life. Second time visiting Santa Barbara and we could not go home without getting some fresh made bread before we trekked back home. Their bread is dense and delicious with unique ingredients you don't normally find at a bread shop/bakery. Ordered: -house coffee with oat milk = 3/5. I was ignorant and asked for half and half. Hello! The place is called Oat Bakery they use oat milk! Lol. The coffee was decent. My mom wasn't used to oat milk so she only finished half. Would I get coffee here next time? If I didn't have time, yes, but I would prefer going up the street to Caje or Dune. -shiitake/shallot = 5/5. Delicious and the mushrooms are a nice touch! I was skeptical on the mushrooms. I thought it would provide too much moisture to the bread loaf but it makes for great flavor and texture. -sage/garlic = 3/5. Nothing special flavor wise. I would probably not get this again. -date/something salty? = 6/5. I wish I remembered what seasonal bread we ordered the first time we visited. Amazing, delicious breads! I tried the shiitake bread and it was a nice change to the typical bread you find in bakeries. The workers here were super friendly and helpful though I imagine any of their breads would be equally delicious. The bread was super soft and fluffy and the mushroom added a lot of umami flavor to the bread, perfect toasted with some cheeses that I had. Loved it! read more

I found this amazing family owned Oat Bakery. I was strolling on State St. when I noticed the sign on the sidewalk. I love bread & decided to try it. The owners daughter was so sweet & explain that it was her moms recipe. I 1 loaf of the almond date loaf & couldn't resist but to take a chunk & eat it. In simplest terms - the bread is absolutely phenomenal. The charcoal sourdough is a staple and tastes so fresh. The pumpkin seed bread outstanding. With every bite you know you're eating something so simple and something that was baked with great care. You can look right into the kitchen while you order and see their team of happy bakers working together on the next batch. And don't forget to leave without a spread. I don't even know where to start. They're all fantastic, but the artichoke and kale is lifechanging. read more

When I politely asked about it, the employee immediately became defensive and repeatedly insisted that the drink was correct instead of taking a moment to understand the concern. Fortunately, another employee stepped in and offered to remake the drink, which I appreciated. What disappointed me most was the customer service. When I asked the employee for his name so I could provide feedback, he told me that I did not need to know his name and that it was irrelevant for me to know. I found that response surprisingly unprofessional. Mistakes happen. Drinks can be remade. What matters is how customers are treated when they raise concerns respectfully. I spoke with a manager afterward, who apologized for my experience, but I left feeling that the issue was minimized rather than truly addressed. I choose local businesses over large chains whenever possible. That's exactly why this experience was disappointing. I hope this feedback is taken constructively because Dune has built a strong reputation in our community and I would like to see that standard upheld.

What they serve here was unsweetened, so I needed to add sugar, but it was good. On the sweets side, they have cheesecake, baklava... but the dominant sweet here is Turkish Delight. They have a myriad of flavors here, using various Middle Eastern nuts and spices as flavoring. They have the traditional cubed gelatin version, along with a rolled version that is a little softer and less chewy. It is all sold by weight, so you can mix and match.

Anyways, it was dark, a little muddled in flavor, and not as good as other options in the area, in my opinion. That being said, it was in no way bad, and because everything else was closed, I was happy to have had something. It's not the coffee for me, but I think it's plenty good for a cafe drink and a light meal!

While there's no seating and no traditional bakery fare, what they do offer is a delicious variety of healthy, fresh, and wholesome breads that exceeded my expectations. The breads here resemble massive scones, but in reality, they are delightful little rounded loaves. One of their standout offerings is the superseed cookie, which is absolutely amazing. The focaccia bread is nothing short of divine, with the perfect crumb that would make it an ideal choice for a dinner party. This bakery is a true gem for locals who can appreciate the convenience of taking home these artisanal breads. Tourists might be a bit confused due to the lack of seating and to-go-only service, but I would recommend trying something easy to eat on the go, like the superseed cookie, and then coming back for more to enjoy at home. I can't even. So good. Just go. Sourdough. Charcoal sourdough. Everything. Eat it. Smile. Repeat. Seriously the best bread I've ever had and I live in the Bay Area where we don't mess around with our bread. Nothing comes close to OAT. Not Tartine, not Acme, not MHBB, not Della Fattoria. None of it is as good as OAT, which had forever ruined me for bread eating anywhere else. This morning I ate my toast at the Ojai Valley Inn thinking it was a waste of calories because it just wasn't OAT. I have a feeling that will be a familiar refrain from now on. read more

Another great place for certified vegan, gluten free, organic loaves. Have tried The Olive sourdough and the Shiitake Shallot and completely blown away with the flavor, so dense and hot from the oven goodness. Would pile up for weekend getaway! read more

They offer fantastic, cashew, spreads in dill and chive along with some special flavors now and then. Thank you, oat bakery for having sprout craft non-dairy deliciousness there. There are gluten-free breads there's a cookie that has healthy items, including some chocolate chips. The sourdough either charcoal or seeded are our favorites, but you can't go wrong with anything.
