Jeff is super friendly, always accommodating and goes above and beyond what is required of any mechanic. I've brought my car into him several times with an issue, only for him to recommend I take it to the dealer as the repairs should be under warranty (sometimes that's not the case, because the dealership is shady, but I digress). In these instances, he didn't even charge a fee to look at the car. In instances where he fixed the car, I've never had a follow-up problem, and turn-around is usually quick. His knowledge of VW goes above and beyond what even the dealership knows or will tell, and offers incredible tips for maintaining your car. Sadly, my VW is an absolute lemon and I'll probably be selling it soon and going with a different automaker. This means I'll no longer have him as a mechanic. I was quoted $1.5k to replace a part on my 2009 Volkswagen, and when I called another specialty VW shop a few miles away, they quoted me $850. A NOT EXITING STORY NO ONE REALLY NEEDS TO READ About a week ago my 2011 Golf started shifting really rough so I hopped online to try to find a mechanic. A daunting journey in a sea of shady, for sure. Ocean Auto Care came up and had good reviews AND was super close so I figured I'd give them a shot. They way exceeded my expectations. I was looking at having to get some major work done on my transmission (beware the salvage title) and the quote from another dealer was between $1200 and $2400. Jeff took a look, ran a scan (which he didn't even charge me for) and setup to do the work. When he got the car up he did a check of the wire harness and found a broken connection - WHICH HE TOLD ME ABOUT. Totally the opposite of almost every mechanic shop I've dealt with. His small shop is run with dexterity by him and his associates, and his service is impeccable. He is such a nice person and really makes sure everything is done perfectly. Gordan is THE best!!! He has a great professional demeanor and REALLY know Volkswagons. My wife and I were told our Jetta needed a 1k repair, this is after spending 3k this year at the dealer and finding out that many of their listed repairs had not been done! For my own reasons, I'm pretty strict with my VW servicing--it either goes to the VW dealership service center, or a German autohaus/VW shop. So when my clutch finally gave out on me after about 165K miles, I trekked over to the very familiar VW Santa Monica. All I could do was gasp. I understand that businesses have to make money, but did I have "sucker" written on my forehead? I had an idea of how much a clutch for my make/model was, but the dealership quoted me double the price. Enough was enough; I was willing to pay a $100 diagnostic fee and walk away just to prove a point. I decided that it was time find a reliable dealership alternative that wasn't going to send me to the poorhouse. Enter Exclusively VW Repair. Folks, this review is long overdue, so I'll cut to the chase and yelp to all VW drivers to hightail it over to this shop! The other reviewers are correct; Gordon is awesome and runs a really great shop. The value of the service is beyond fair and he actually takes the time to give you a genuine, in-depth answer about what's going on with your car. So back to the clutch. Basically, it was done for about half the price the dealer quoted. The price for the German-made clutch was spot on, service was super fast, and Gordon was able to give me a thorough diagnostic about my car. And without being pushy (which I've experienced at other places) he advised me about repairs that I could hold off on and what shouldn't wait and why. Since then, my car has been in his shop several times for regular maintenance and other repairs, and it's running great. If you drop your car off, it's in an easy walking neighborhood--around the corner from a modern furniture/design store, and a short walk to Santa Monica Blvd with things to see and do if you need to kill time. So if you want super knowledgeable, fair, friendly, and no hassle service, I highly recommend taking your new or older VW (1999 & up--I just made the cut) to Exclusively VW Repair. I'm relieved to have finally found a trustworthy shop in L.A to take my VW to. Check engine light came on and car would die on idle. Luckily I drive a manual and was able to keep the revs up on idle to keep the car from stalling, just enough to get to the shop. Didn't make an appointment, I was in a bind and wanted to drop off the car at the nearest shop and found Ocean Auto on yelp hoping to get lucky. I drove in and Jeff was extremely accommodating. He had a busy schedule that day and I didn't have an appointment, but he promised to try and diagnose my car that day in between appointments. Had 100% transparency, diagnosed my car, told me everything up front so I knew what to expect, and presented me with a list of options and recommended the one that he felt was most cost effective and efficient. Replaced the part, even cleaned my throttle body for free since they had to remove it and noticed it was dirty. I drove away that same day, car runs perfect again without any hassle or trying to up-sell me on anything I didn't need. I've been coming to them for over a year now (Formerly Exclusively Volkswagen) and I have never had a single complaint about the service I've received or the repair work done to my 02 Jetta. I feel like Gordon goes above and beyond. He explains things thoroughly and honestly. My car has 150k miles on it and he's let me know what work is urgent and what can wait until my budget allows for it. I won't take my car anywhere else, ever again. These are guys are the real deal. A light came on in my engine and I took it to Pep Boys, who said my battery needed to be replaced. The light went off and I figured everything was fixed. A few days later, however, the light came back on and I decided I should take it to somewhere that deals only with VW's. First on my google search, this popped up. I called, Gordon said to come by right away. I am so thankful I went to him for this because he told me Pep Boys had lied and ripped me off. He found that a cable had been damaged, and had it fixed in a matter of hours. I'm a 20 year old college student living far from home, so its incredibly nice to know I found a mechanic who is so knowledgeable about VW's and completely trustworthy. Ok this place totally wins in terms of customer service and commitment to doing a comprehensive job. I wrote my initial review with no ill-will towards Ocean Auto Care - just a very candid opinion. Jeff called me today and followed up to tell me that they have resolved the catalytic converter issue. They said that they have found that they can do an after-market catalytic converter. He called me AFTER already knowing that I got it fixed somewhere else -- that type of follow up is rare in any business (unless they are trying to sell you something). Jeff even told me that my review motivated him to dig deeper into the legal aspect of the catalytic converter issue specifically the legality in California. 2 thumbs up for the way they conduct their business... Alas, I still live too damn far away Santa Monica and driving the 405 probably does more damage to my car (and my psyche) then the risk of using a non-VW specialized mechanic. read more

I try to do as much research as possible to get the best deals in auto repair. I was a little hesitant to try out this place, because the prices quoted were so much less than everywhere else I called. And I was even more hesitant when I pulled up to the little garage in an alley. However, I was extremely satisfied with the customer service and work done on my car. Gordon know what he is talking about, and he is not interested in up charging you an arm and a leg for his own benefit. I've been to him a few times... once for an oil change. Once for replacing the light bulbs. And once for my 40K check up. He was great with the light bulbs only charging me $5 to change the group of them that were out in my tail light. And he showed me how to do it myself... which I really appreciated. And for my 40k check up, he was very honest about how somethings weren't necessary at that point... so I was able to choose to wait on some things. And he was still much less expensive than the dealer. Gordon is a funny guy too. I suggest giving him and his business a shot! read more
