Ocean Palace serves decent dimsum with prompt service. A couple remarks about the experience: 1) the tables don't have lazy susan's (spinning table), so when you come with a large party, it is difficult to pass the food and tea around. I wish they can upgrade the tables with this essential feature. 2) the fundamental items - the har gow wrappers did not hold its shape and the filling spilled out easily: they could be thicker. The siu mai tasted more shrimps than preferred, and I wish it had mushroom in the filling to round out the flavor. The chicken feet were lean and tasted off. The beef balls were too savory and did not have water chestnut. Overall the taste and execution are acceptable. Would consider coming again if in the area but not rave about it. read more

Ambiance was wonderful and the food was delicious. I do not see myself returning because of the service. We were a party of 14 & only spent $300 and everyone was starving ... because it felt like they gave up on us. Granted some members of our party came late but we kept ordering dishes. They completely stopped bringing us food. Every single time we would try to place large amounts of food because you know ... party or 14 the host would shake his head and when food did arrive something was always missing. My favorite part (insert sarcasm here) was when the servers spoke to us in Spanish. Despite being a multiracial family, we are predominantly Asian. Hungry Asians who left hungry. My bestie's child yelling "I'm still hungry" broke my heart. When we got the check we immediately walked it to the front to pay so we could get the hell out of there. It's the beginning of my birthday celebration. We will be visiting more restaurants and this was a disappointing beginning. We ended the night visiting Whole Foods then Trill Burgers because unlike this place, they were happy to take our money. read more

I've always had positive experiences at Ocean Palace and have been long overdue for a review. The service is excellent, the food is great, and the large space is inviting. The banquet restaurant is located in an iconic and popular shopping center off Bellaire Blvd. I love their Dim Sum options, and their large menu has something for everyone. On a few occasions I've been able avoid their long wait time, which is also enjoyable considering the nearby shops. Five stars. read more

Ocean Palace is located in the Hong Kong Market area in Bellaire. The place is huge, we came here for dim-sum on Friday morning and it was the order from menu option which is fine. It was not busy but weekends are jam packed here. Atmosphere was clean, service was quick, and it looks like they remodeled the place a bit. We ordered the classics per pictured and also some fried noodles (which was flavorful and cooked right). We were pleased with all of our selections and overall would come back again. They also have additional menu options here such as lobster and seafood which is a great combination with dim-sum. read more

What a great Dim Sum place! This is my go-to when I am in Houston and the flavors never disappoint. We currently live in the PNW and frequently go to Vancouver BC for dim sum since it is one of the best, so to find a place that can match that flavor is always a huge plus. Though I still wish the tea was free (like in our local places), the plates are reasonably priced. Even though the place is very big, if you don't arrive at a reasonable hour, you will be waiting for a table. The service is very friendly and very happy to provide you with recommendations. I love ocean palace, it is my GO-TO dim sum spot in Houston. A staple restaurant with great vibes and the traditional rolling carts on the weekends! It gets very busy at times. Service is fast. Now, the food: 1) Shu Mai: I'd say my favorite in Houston. They consistently do it well. 2) Shrimp Rice Roll: My family's favorite, decent amount of shrimp inside too, and I love the slightly sweet soy sauce on top 3) Truffle Shu Mai: I like this one! It's unique and delicious. Good truffle flavor 4) Fried Crab Claw: Standard, good crispy lightly fried outside with a big chunk of crab meat mixture. Dipped in the sweet and sour sauce, this dish is always a comfort item for me. 5) Turnip Cake: got this once and it was good! crispy outside, desnse-but tender bite, savory not too salty. 6) PEKING DUCK: omg this one was amazing, actually one of my favorites in Houston. I'd say if not number 1 then it's number 2 for me. The duck itself is great. You get that crispy skin and juicy duck meat. But what stands out the most is that instead of a duck soup, you get this stir fried duck meat lettuce wrap side. That stir fry is slightly sweet, savory, and sooo delicious. 7) Baked salted egg lava bao: omg my love. okay this is the dish that I get every single time I come without fail. You get the most delectable bolo (pineapple bun) stuffed with a gritty, sweet, salted egg yolk molten liquid inside. The bun itself is SO good, the texture is slightly chewy, delicious, and you have that sweet crust on top. There are many more I tried but I fear this review would be pages and pages long. We were able get a table on a Saturday brunch time. I'd say this was an above average dim sum / Chinese Restaurant (4-star). The flavors were delicious. The food was freshly prepared. The ambiance was missing the typical dim sum feel with more carts serving the people. I think there were only about three carts that were serving dim sum a la carte. we ordered most dishes from the menu vs getting maybe two or three dishes from the carts. TAKE OUT REVIEW, I'll come back and eat with friends. Food was hot and inviting. I ordered thousand egg congee and a fried stick (you tiao) for a classic Chinese breakfast, and it was so delicious. The food is amazing here, and the service was excellent! The entrace is beautiful, and the vacinity of very clean. Our favorite dish was the pecking duck. Ocean Palace is my go-to / favorite Dim Sum restaurant in Houston! Authentic and delicious dim sum, great service, up-kept restaurant, and fair pricing. They have most of the common Dim Sum items made, and pushed out via the carts. You can order specialty items via the waiter / waitress, where they will make it fresh and brought out to you in a timely manner. I absolutely get my Dim Sum fix every time in the Houston, particularly the Bellaire area. The restaurant has a moderate ambiance vibe, suitable for dates, casual meals, or group reunions/events. When we walked in, the interior was quite pleasant. We were seated quickly since we arrived after lunchtime, and it wasn't crowded at all. The service was excellent; our waiter was friendly and frequently came by to refill our drinks. Before placing my order, I visited the bathroom, and I must say, it was unpleasant. It was humid and had an odor that was less than inviting. The atmosphere instantly shifted when I walked in. As for the food, many of the dishes seemed old and stale. It may have been because I came later than usual, but the beef short ribs and chicken feet had a smell that reminded me of freezer burn. I don't think I would ever come back, but the one thing I really enjoyed from the menu was the congee with pork and preserved egg. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered another to go. read more

Ocean Palace is quite literally one of the largest dining destinations for Chinese dim sum in Houston, located in the Hong Kong City Mall in the heart of Chinatown. This place is HUGE. Given so, expect that there might be a wait. Unlike some of the other dim sum spots in the area, they enter your phone number into the waitlist to notify you via text when your table is ready. This can be a great option if you want to walk around or shop at the mall while you wait. For a party of two on Christmas afternoon, we ended up waiting just under an hour and a half. In terms of food, they have ample selection - bao, Shu Mai, Peking duck, steamed and fried dumplings, veggies, rice noodle rolls, and desserts to name a few offerings. Not only can you order by marking selections on the paper menu but they also offer cart selections for a more traditional approach. A few favorites were the sautéed snow pea leaves with garlic (la dau ha lan xao hanh toi) and the shrimp dumplings (har gow). The staff were very nice but the timing of the meal service was a bit drawn out. Each item is brought to your table once it it ready, often times by different servers, so we received most of our dishes within about 20 minutes of ordering, however one of the dumpling dishes had not arrived until we were about ready to leave. Overall, we definitely enjoyed the food and experience but might opt to visit during a less peak day and time. read more

There are several dim sum places in Chinatown but Ocean Place is one of my top places to go now. I like their dim sums for the value and quality. First time trying the truffle shu mai, and I was impressed by the umami flavor. The pork back ribs were meaty and tender, unlike other dim sums served a lot of fatty meats or the cartilage pieces. We got the chicken feet and steamed tofu skin wraps, they are always classic and can never go wrong. To-go service was quick and always crowded on the weekends but that's not surprising because they got delicious dim sums in town. Great place for family casual gathering lunch on the weekend. read more

I've never missed dim sum from Houston, as much as I miss it now. Anytime when I'm in town, I have to stop and grab some for the road. I know it's not as authentic as sitting down and having the whole experience of the chaos Chinatown has to offer, but I'll take what I can get! Ordering online was surprisingly REALLY easy (considering this is Chinatown, once again). Everything was neatly packaged, including all the sauces. I was metaphorically crying with how good everything was. Particularly, hands down to the Shu Mai, as it had the essentials: excellent flavoring, chopped shitake mushrooms, tobiko, and tiny shrimps adorning the top of each dumpling. This review is years overdue, it's one of the OG dim sum places in Houston and glad that it's made it through some tough times. It's honestly one of my favorite places to go for Sunday morning dim sum. We had some out of town guests come in recently and they needed to leave early and ocean palace opens at 10 am!!! Most other places in town are 11 am. Upon walking in I was greeted by a familiar face, Jackie! He always is welcoming! Upon getting seated we ordered a mixture of dim sum and family style dishes. Everything was delicious, especially the special salt ribs and the siu mai. In addition to their dim sum they have a huge upstairs area where we have hosted various events from rodeo dinner dances to Asian chamber luncheons, it truly is a wonderful venue!!! read more

Varied menu with lots of options. There are a few carts that come around with dim sum and then some you order off the menu. You pay per plate / order. The duck was amazingly flavorful and not dry at all. The sticky rice in lotus leaf was so aromatic as if it was tea and had a nice taste. The other dumplings you can't go wrong with as well. Late afternoon lunch. Found this place through yelp and it was a good find. Great taste Pan fried shrimp with chives dumplings - wonderful flavor and texture. The crunchy wrapper adds to the taste. Sticky rice with meat in lotus leaf - my son's fav. Shrimp dumplings - these are huge and so tasty. Pretty good. Shrimp & pork dumplings Fried turnip cake Chicken feet with black bean sauce - could use more flavor but the texture was great. Sautéed green beans with pork - crunchiness just right. Not ordering again Pan fried tofu sheet roll - not great flavor and a bit on the dry side Shrimp with chives dumplings - the texture is just not working for me. Love the dimsum here, big space and a lot of weddings and celebrations can be help here. They still have some dishes on a cart but lots of items order off the sheet or menu. Peking duck was ok, including a second dish. The fried noodles were good, the chicken feet with black beans and the ginger tripe are both excellent. Service is a little spotty even when it calmed in the late afternoon but the food was good. read more

Well I never thought I'd find such good chinese food in Texas but was pleasantly surprised by the dim sum here. Ordered siu mai, gai lan, egg rolls, shrimp balls, sticky rice, soy sauce chow mein and sesame balls. Everything was good but the egg rolls were kinda cold and the servers missed a couple things I ordered so never got them. Oh well, it was enough food and we were all happy with the experience. Prices were very reasonable compared to California. Hope to go back one day! read more

Im from las vegas and thought our chinese food was better. After visiting ocean palace i am reminded to never stop trying new places. Totally blown away with the flavors and assortment of shu mai and all kinds of food. The duck was insane , the truffle and shrimp pork shu mai was out of this world. When i come to houston my one and only stop is gonna be ocean palace for chinese flavors. Thomas was an amazing server and gave us all the right recommendations and steller service. Every now and then my friends and family typically come here for dim sum. It's not the best, but it's not terrible either. They have all your typical dim sum dishes, and family style dishes, so even if you don't like one, you're bound to find something you like. Whether you like seafood, beef, pork, chicken, or vegetarian, they have every kind of dish for someone. Recently I've been here for family style & wedding meals. Their dishes are decent, and they pretty serve your typical fish maw soup, pecking duck, walnut shrimp, etc. Nothing spectacular, unless it's unfamiliar to you. One thing that really does stand out is their service! Both times I've came here for a family and a wedding event, the service was pretty good! They are so attentive and really take care of their guests! That's quite rare for an Asian restaurant! read more

I've been here twice, and dim sum is honestly pretty good. Take it from a Canto girl who great up eating dim sum at least twice a week! It's a no frills type of dim sum hall (our sticky rice came without the lotus leaf LOL). Flavor is really good, and my friends were impressed! We ordered maybe 6-9 plates and flat noodles, and it came out to be ~$17 per person with tip and tax. If you ever crave dim sum on a random Thursday night, this place will have your back. read more

This is a classic Houston dim sum restaurant. It's very popular, and I recommend getting there before it opens at 10am, especially on the weekend. It is much larger than your typical Chinese restaurant. Service is good, and most of the dishes are solid choices. This is what we got: Congee with pork and preserved egg: such a warm, comforting starter Shrimp & pork shu mai: a classic choice, tastes like it should Shrimp dumplings: also tastes good like it should Pork soup dumplings: so bad. I've been to Ocean palace a couple of times now along with other dim sum restaurants in the Bellaire area and it's okay. The lines are usually long when you want in and will see a bunch of crowded people along either the front of the entrance or huddling within the waiting area. Do not be intimidated because usually getting a table isn't too bad and you won't have to wait long. Not as many food cart pushers now so the experience overall of dim sum here is lackluster but you can order directly as you see from the menu so there is that factor of ordering without having to wait. The food itself is a hit or miss. I've gotten an assortment of food here and the cheung fun (rice noodles) with shrimp tastes pretty good here along with their shu mai, fried taro balls, and their stir-fried seafood noodles. However, this time I ordered and tried their pork soup dumplings which were not too good. It was very doughy, the soup was very bland within the dumplings and it was chewy and thick. Overall, Ocean Palace has been here for a while and it's a spot my family and I come to once in a while but I would say there are better dim sum places that I have tried in the Bellaire area. read more

I initially thought the duck dish was Peking duck, but it was actually the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck. Even so, everyone at my table agreed we still preferred the traditional Peking duck style. The only dishes I genuinely enjoyed were the soup dumplings, cucumber salad, and fried dumplings. Most of the other dishes at the table were barely touched. If you're looking for colorful, aesthetically pleasing food and great presentation, you may enjoy this place. But if flavor is your main priority, this spot just wasn't for me personally.

Service and the kitchen staff is a mess where it's most evident during their busiest hours. At one point, Cantonese was spoken but it also seems that's no longer the case. Previously the food was passable, but now it's near abysmal. Siu mai was hearty, but fairly bland. The same applies to their spare ribs (排骨), beef balls (牛肉球), and steamed glutinous rice in leaf (糯米雞). I felt their custard buns (奶黃包), fried stuffed crab claw (釀蟹鉗), fried glutinous dumpling (鹹水角) and the turnip cake (蘿蔔糕) were dried out. While the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) and rice rolls (腸粉) mostly passed the test, it needed lots of soy sauce + condiments to be worth it. The only winner was their beef chow fun (乾炒牛河), where the beef and ho fun noodles were tender, while also being adequately greasy. The bonus bits of fried egg within were a nice surprise. While the prices range from $3.75-$9.70, a majority of it will average out to be $5-6 a dish. This isn't a terrible deal per se, especially during these times. However, it is a big price to pay for service issues and sub-par quality dim sum.
