I've been to Ocean palace a couple of times now along with other dim sum restaurants in the Bellaire area and it's okay. The lines are usually long when you want in and will see a bunch of crowded people along either the front of the entrance or huddling within the waiting area. Do not be intimidated because usually getting a table isn't too bad and you won't have to wait long. Not as many food cart pushers now so the experience overall of dim sum here is lackluster but you can order directly as you see from the menu so there is that factor of ordering without having to wait. The food itself is a hit or miss. I've gotten an assortment of food here and the cheung fun (rice noodles) with shrimp tastes pretty good here along with their shu mai, fried taro balls, and their stir-fried seafood noodles. However, this time I ordered and tried their pork soup dumplings which were not too good. It was very doughy, the soup was very bland within the dumplings and it was chewy and thick. It's easy to take the Dim Sum game in Houston less seriously for a number of reasons: lack of venues, dish variety, and food quality. Sprinkle in a few more factors like a Cantonese speaking staff, affordable prices, spacious options for group dining, push cart nostalgia, and tea options and things can get muddled quickly. I think Ocean Palace is one of the places that comes closest to answering the demand and as a result, is a reliable option for anyone looking for some very solid dim sum. Everything about Ocean Palace is certainly large and palatial and has taken on the same design as the adjacent Hong Kong City Mall (香港城). Even the actual Chinese name (珍寶海鮮樓) would could be construed as "Hong Kong City Jumbo Seafood Restaurant" or "Treasure Seafood Banquet Hall." The Canto vibes are serious, even the phone number (281-988-8898) are as such that it's unmistakably Cantonese. (#1) The spaciousness here is on another level. There's so much real estate here with their giant koi pond and incredibly spacious banquet hall that it can only be truly rivaled by Kim Son along Bellaire. Despite all the space, there's still a wait here, typically in the afternoons and especially during the weekend prime time. I have found that coming early and ensuring one's party is available, that my wait time is minimal. A little luck and a lot of planning goes a long way. Right out the gate, the variety is impressive. I was told the push carts are normally a weekend thing, but most Hong Kongers and myself prefer a-la-carte via a checklist of some kind. They have a lot of dishes here but one thing they don't have is one of my favorite steamed fish balls (鲮鱼球). I'm not sure why since they also serve the beef balls (牛肉丸) but that's not a deal breaker in the slightest. I've managed to enjoy their steamed dishes the most, which include the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃), teochew dumplings (潮州粉粿), lotus leaf rice wrap (糯米雞), shumai (燒賣) and various rice noodle rolls (腸粉) but especially of shrimp and or fried donut style (炸兩). The prices are on the higher end, so that's just something to think about when they will charge even for tea. Most of the staff understands Canto but there are going to be a few Viet friendly staff members patrolling the dining room. There are also private rooms available, which will likely be my next move when coming in with a big group. I'm not a big dim sum person but finally tried this out! I came later in the day (2p) on a Sunday and there was a half hour wait. You can order food by carts or using a paper. Since it was late, there weren't many carts rolling so we chose to order ahead. Everything was thankfully available but because the food came out all at once, some of the food became cold. My favorites are: $5.75 tier: fried pork puff $6.75 tier: the classic shu mai, marinated beef short rib, steamed cuttlefish with curry sauce (so flavorful!!) $7.75 tier: rice noodle roll w shrimp and breadstick (may try different one next time) $8.25 tier: Chinese broccoli (I can't eat dim sum without this!) Ocean Palace has stepped up their game since the renovation back in 2018, and is now become my go-to recommendation for Dim Sum. While they don't quite beat out spots like Golden Dim Sum in the taste department, they come pretty darn close. When you throw in their lightning-fast service and quick food delivery, I find myself choosing Ocean Palace over Golden most of the time. You'll find all your classic dim sum favorites here, from xiu mai to the pork taro puffs, Chinese broccoli, jasmine tea, and more. They've even added trending items such as xiao long bao. Now if you plan on visiting on the weekends, be prepared for a bit of wait; it can get busy real quick. I fully suggest you aim to arrive the minute they open or within the first 20 minutes. A group of us went to Ocean Palace for Sunday dim sum and practically had to roll out because we were stuffed with so much good food! First off, walking up to the restaurant, you know you are going to have a great meal. The restaurant was massive and reminded me of the banquet hall style ginormous restaurants I've been to in China. It also had a moat in basically the middle of the parking lot for bonus points. The actual dim sum experience was great, they had carts coming around as well as some items you order off the menu. The good part is if you don't see something you want on the cart (or perhaps missed it) you could use the menu to order it! The menu also has pictures if you're new to dim sum. My favorites were the Xiu Mai, the shrimp and chive dumpling, bbq pork buns, and custard buns. They also had wonderful hot tea and Peking duck! Came here for the first time with my brother. We ordered the shrimp shumai, pork dumplings, spare ribs, fried Chinese donut, sticky rice salt/peppered lobster, and shrimp dumpling. The spare ribs and dumplings were "meh." The shumai and lobster were amazing. There was an hour wait, but we didn't wait long because we were browsing the Asian Town in the same area. Their cashier system went down and they made a lot of people wait. They didn't even accept cash so they just held everyone hostage without guidance or communication lol. A few people got frustrated because they had to leave and another person didn't get his credit card back for 10mins after their system went down. Anyways, luckily for me, as soon as we were done eating, we didn't wait too long before the system went back online. The staff are fast, but don't really talk to you because it's busy. Unfortunately they only had one cart circulating the whole restaurant so you must order from the menu. Everything we got was tasty, my favorites were the rice noodles with shrimp, shu mai, and shrimp dumplings. Ocean Palace is everything wrong with hype-based Asian cuisine. It's like Kim Sơn but actually unpleasant instead of just meh. It's a bit telling that, despite being the anchor for the Hong Kong Market area with long lines outside, the one thing that made an impression on me was how bland and basic the shrimp filling was. Oh, and the inattentive attitude of the servers, too. But I don't review service so let's move on to the dim sum, shall we? Now I mentioned that their shrimp filling was "basic". In fact, it was also rather tough in texture and flavorless. But why is this important? Well because it is used EVERYWHERE darnit! The shrimp filling is normally the most standard and important filling for a dim sum restaurant, as it is used in Har Gow which is one of the two most common dim sum types (along with Shu Mai), while retaining the versatility to act as a base for stuffings of other dim sum. However, Ocean Palace not only uses this exact same filling for all their variants of Har Gow, but also in their stuffed eggplants, their crab claws (?!) and I'm sure other dishes that we did not try as well. In fact, let me go one step further. This accursed stuffing tastes like they didn't do anything special for it at all. Instead, they just minced the whole shrimps used for Cheung Fun and called it a day. So there you go, one more common dim sum type with the exact same filling. It's like Chinese Taco Bell! But aside from the filling issue, there's something that irked me even more: How they treat their "special" products. If memory serves correctly, Ocean Palace divides their dim sum into a whopping 6 price classes: Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), X-Large (XL), Super (SU) and Special (SP). Most of their SU- and SP- coded stuff feature totemic but at the same time really obvious ingredients, such as ginseng, abalone, and truffle (throwing the "Oriental" pretence at the third dish already). The ginseng Har Gow is literally just the regular Har Gow thrown in a clear broth but they give you 5 pieces instead of 4 and provide spoons so you wouldn't feel too bad about the price (it's 52% more expensive than the 4-piece version). If you drink this little bowl of clear broth whole, you may find just a tiny note of Daeng Gi Meo Ri ginseng shampoo in what otherwise amounts to salted tapwater. Honestly this ginseng Har Gow dish is just amazing. It captures *cough cough* "Eastern values" as a whole: value-wise it makes sense. Prestige-wise it's TikTokkable. Appeal-wise they desecrated one of their national dishes for a fleeting sense of greatness. And if they can mess up Har Gow just to be able to put "ginseng" on the menu, you can be sure they will do the exact same thing to Shu Mai too! Much to my surprise, the abalone on the SP-class "abalone shu mai" didn't taste like canned abalone at all! ...It tasted like King Trumpet mushrooms. Straight up. King Trumpet. Mushrooms. The soft-shell crab Cheung Fun is another "special" (technically "super") dish that amounted to replacing the shrimp in the regular Cheung Fun with a quarter of a baby blue crab chopped into 9 smaller pieces, deep-fried in twice as much breading. I also found it very odd that they had all of these extraneous offerings, and yet didn't have some common ones. WHERE ARE MY SEAWEED ROLLS GO- All that being said, I found their desserts okay and most of their really savory stuff (beef balls and lotus sticky rice, for example) to work rather well. Perhaps it was why they became so popular in the first place. Or perhaps it was good ole money laundering (with a little bit of media bribery sprinkled on top). I've been coming to Ocean Palace for ages, ever since its opening in 1999 and its always been a staple in Asiatown. Food here ranges from Dim Sum on the weekends, to banquets, to elaborate dinners to BBQ stalls. Along with the good comes the bad, facility wise, this place has had many physical updates. I found myself at dim sum this past Sunday and was quite pleased with the newish physical remodeling they done. Its always bustling with people and its one of the few places left in Houston with push carts. I've always felt push carts are a necessity when it comes to dim sum, but recent times, they have fallen off, perhaps due to efficiency issues. I came in a group of 6 folks and ordered the traditional dim sum fares with a special order of a noodle dish. The food wasn't great, and overall was just alright as things were expected to be what it was. It didn't seem we ate alot, and I finished the meal with being only 60% full. The bill came out to be $200, which points to the pricing seems to be at the higher end. Perhaps its the offset the remodeling process, but it doesn't justify just 'OK' food. The atmosphere is definitely what I think of at a big dim sum restaurant. They had a few carts going around, but a lot of it you order off the menu. It was most of the usual things I like to get-shrimp dumplings, rice noodle roll with shrimp, the fried shrimp ball. They were all exceptionally good. We tried the shrimp egg rolls, and they were packed with shrimp, really good! We also got the rice noodle roll with breadstick which was interesting. It was kind of like there was shrimp toast inside. It's a bit far of a drive for us, but definitely worth it. All the service was nice. We'll definitely be back. read more

All the dimsums we tried were so good that I can't imagine how good the soup dumplings would be. The restaurant is huge but there were only like a few people when I went so we got seated right away. Not sure why they close at 5pm... I can only assume they only take reservations past 5pm? bc its not only a restaurant but venue for big parties! The price of each dimsum was very reasonable and it was sooo delicious. My boyfriend and I ordered I think 6 or 7 and it definitely filled us up. Few things in this area are quite as megistic as the entryway to Ocean Palace. I confided in my best friend that I've had a craving for Dim Sum and he suggested Ocean Palace. The decor was beautiful, super clean, well organized and ready to roll. The staff was warm and attentive and we weren't waiting long for our seat. Here's the Nitty Gritty... I'm happy that I had help navigating their masterpiece of a menu. We tried Dim Sum from all over the menu and everything was exquisite. I stopped by Ocean Palace on a weekend for my friend's birthday party. If you're coming for brunch, expect a long wait. They don't take reservations and it's first come, first served. It's a large restaurant but it's super popular so that's something you're going to have to deal with during peak hours. Lucky for me, someone in my party got there right when they opened so we only had to wait 20 minutes or so after the time we all planned to meet. Parking can be found in the lot that serves the restaurant and the other businesses in the shopping center. Ocean Palace is a dim sum experience. If you've never had dim sum, it consists of Chinese small plates that are served family style. You typically order a bunch of food for the table and then everyone partakes in the feast. There's usually a table that spins which makes it easy to share everything. There are a lot of options to choose from. Dumplings are always popular, as are various steamed buns. Those are my go-to's. When I first moved to Houston over 10 years ago, this was the dim sum place to go. I felt like it's definitely gone down hill, or that I've just been to too many other dim sum places and my standards have risen. Firstly, they have a paper with items to order which is fine but when we received the food it wasn't even warm anymore. Ordering carts would have been a better choice I think, as items are still steaming. However the carts rarely came by so I'm not sure what the cadence or wait would have been to bank on that. We also received a dish that was spoiled--definitely smelled bad and tasted sour. We were able to return it to the kitchen but it was unfortunate that happened to our table. It was hard to flag down someone consistently as we had to wait on a few items as well. I don't expect great service for dim sum places, so the low star rating is mostly over the food quality. My family had dim sum lunch here today. Overall the food was good to very good. The way they serve the dim sum here is a bit different than other dim sum restaurants we've been to. Instead of a bunch of carts rolling around with the various dishes, there were only a couple of carts with 6-8 different dishes. If you wanted anything else, you had to order a la carte off the dim sum menu. While this insures that the food comes "fresh" out of the kitchen, for me, it does lose a bit of the dim sum experience. Between the cards and a la carte ordering, we had 8 different dishes (pork spareribs in black bean sauce, xiao long bao, shrimp/port shumai, shrimp dumplings, shrimp noodles, fried pork and chive dumpling, bbq pork buns, clams in black bean sauce). The only one we did not like was the pork bbq buns (too much bun, which was doughy and not enough filling). For me personally, I slightly prefer the food at Fung's Kitchen a bit more. In addition, the decor here is clean but pretty spartan (as opposed to the newly remodeled interior of Fung's) and the service here was only so-so. I love dim sum and this place does not disappoint. I'm originally from the Bay Area and we have great dim sum there. This place is definitely compares. Everything felt very clean while dining here. Hand sanitizer before being seated and tables were spread fairly far apart. I've never been here before so unsure if they had dim sum carts previously but we just chose our orders off a list and it was brought out shortly after. We came here right at opening and did not have to wait to be seated. Started off with tea (a must with dim sum). Got the sticky lotus rice (lo mai gai) and my gosh, unsure if it was just the amount of time since I last had this but I want to say this is one of the better ones I've had. The rice was sticky but not to the point where there was a wasteful amount left stuck to the wrapper. Seasoned very generously and I loved it. I normally just get regular shrimp dumplings (ha gao) but thought I would switch it up and get shrimp dumplings with chives. It was a good switch up but I think next time I'll just get the regular shrimp dumplings. Nothing wrong with these though! Next up we're shrimp and pork dumplings (shui mai). I have always found these just okay, I like them but they aren't my favorite (fav dumpling belongs to the shrimp drink kings). These were tasty! Then we got steamed rice noodle with BBQ pork. I expected for these to be reminiscent of ones I would get in Oakland Chinatown but I was let down. This dish was served with the sweet soy sauce but even with the sauce poured over, the rice noodles were not very flavorful. The bbq pork tasted a bit bland. I always feel I need to eat more veggies when on trips so we ordered a dish of garlic sautéed baby bok Choi. I lovvvvve bok Choi and this was a refreshing dish to have between bites of dumplings. Last up were truffle pork soup dumplings. As with all soup dumplings, it took maybe 10-15 to cook and come out. Very soupy, very flavorful, and they did not skimp on the truffles at all. I accidentally ripped my soup dumpling so there was much spillage :( I could have done without the ruffles and ordered a normal soup dumpling but my boyfriend loves soup dumplings and truffles, put them together and I knew we were going to order it (I prefer the classic soup dumpling hehe) Overall, I really enjoyed my dim sum experience here. Loved this dim sum! Since I've lived in NYC for years, my expectations for good dim sum are high and Ocean Palace nailed it. We arrived around 12pm on a Saturday for 2, and the wait for a table was around 40min. No prob - we hung out at the nearby Hong Kong Market (review coming soon) while we waited for a text that our table was ready. Once we were seated, the tables were very well distanced, everything was very clean and sanitized, and we ordered off paper menus rather than having the typical dim sum carts. We ordered shu mai, har gow, pork ribs, lotus wrapped rice, shrimp balls, fried crab claws, and the rice roll with breadstick and shrimp. Ocean city gets 5 starts because the rice roll with breadstick and shrimp was AMAZING - possibly the best dim sum dish I've ever had (if you've never ordered this you need to). The shrimp balls, crab claws (ask for Mayo with these to put them over the top) and lotus rice were also delicious. The shu mai, har gow and pork ribs were misses for me. All the dishes were piping hot when they came out of the kitchen.
