The portions for most of the food is deceptively large and all scratch recipes. You will be leaving with take-out boxes for sure. The Service was pretty awesome. Last summer, my wife and I discovered First State, which at the time was still new. Dallas was our server the first time that we ate at First State, and then we were lucky enough to have him again this time and he remembered us. Before we could get a word out he said "Hey, welcome back!" like we had been friends for years. BEST SERVER EVER! Extremely attentive without crowding our table. Very knowledgeable. I suspect that that is a reflection of the whole staff. The hostess was pleasant. A bit quiet but pleasant. The bartender, Joel (?), seemed fun and engaging. He welcomed everyone like they were regulars, and really looked like he was enjoying his job. Even the young kid that dropped our food was on point, setting our dishes in the right places without asking. Making sure that we didn't need anything before he left. The whole experience was great. I'm a fan and we will be back. The atmosphere and vibe was fun and relaxing. Not your standard rush to order, eat fast, and "here's your bill" sit down restaurant. The restaurant is very clean and it is open and spacious. The place has that great neighborhood brewpub vibe feel. We LOVED the beer label walls! I want to do that in my man cave! Awesome idea. The large TVs were playing a variety of sports. The music was pretty good. Maybe a touch loud. They have live music that seemed to be setting up as we were leaving. Apparently they have live music every Friday and Saturday. We wish that we could have stayed. Dallas said that the band coming in that night was pretty popular. All in all, First State was a fun, and delicious dining experience. my only criticism would be that it is a bit pricey. I understand that scratch restaurants are going to be more expensive, but charging someone for a small container of sauce seems a little like nickel and dime budgeting. I had one of their dark beers (I think it was a chocolate porter) and my wife had a margarita. The girls wanted something sweet so they got the chocolate cake and a Smores Cheesecake. It would be 1star if it was not for the ambiance, the scenery and me being with my 2 birthday girls..... Here is the long story because I feel like writing today. First, I was called in the morning to confirm our reservation. I was asked to come early because it is wedding season. I don't know what wedding season has to do with a reservation made a couple days ahead of time on their website but...OK, we went early. On that confirmation call the caller mentioned my note of it being both my mom's (96) & my wife's (??) birthday - which I acknowledged. I thought it funny they asked if you are celebrating something on the rez site, then they acknowledge it 'to me' during the confirmation call, but not even a "welcome & happy birthday" from the maître d' or our waiter to the 2 birthday girls. At 96 my mom appreciates the attention and this is why I put it down. It's not really a big deal but let's just say 'strike one' because it was not at all crowded our whole dining time and the wedding was upstairs. Second, after dropping off my mom, (96 bday) & wife and parking the car, I sat down at the table, was handed a menu by our waiter and was immediately asked -"are you ready to order." Come on dude, have a clue....strike two. You are not a "two eggs and sausage" diner. We ordered drinks. The waiter then gave us plenty of time to finish our 1st drinks and then watch most of the ice melt before he came back to take our dinner orders. Again, it was not crowded at all. This was just a foul tip and not the strike out, let's say. The food took a reasonable amount of time to come out. Baywood has a small, and reasonably priced menu. No complaints there unless you don't like french fries, or salt fries, as they call them. The mound of fries on each plate was twice as big as each entree. A mound of french fries at what is supposed to be "fine dining" is just lazy, unimaginative and an "I don't care" fine dining restaurant attitude, imo. The crab dip appetizer had a fair amount of grease, or butter, or mayo floating on top and did lack the crab meat. I'm guessing they put Old Bay on the homemade chips so 'it seems' as though you are eating crab. I did notice at least one piece of crab though. The ribs were very fatty and they were 'fall off the bone'. Maybe this was because the weight of the fat wore the meat down off the bone. So, after eating and never seeing our waiter, we sit and talk. After this we sat and talked some more. The finally we sat and talked some more. Again there were 2 open tables right next to us the whole night. And, while going to the men's room, I noticed the other dining area was sparsely crowded also. The bar area did look crowded with golfers but this should not have affected the dining areas or our dining experience. The two dining area I saw could have easily accommodated at least 50 more people in just those 2 rooms. Finally, our waiter comes back. I then went to the parking lot to drive the car up to valet my 2 birthday girls while asking my wife to pay. Hey, it's her birthday. Why shouldn't she pay? I, AGAIN!!!, had to wait maybe 10 -15 minutes out at the front door for them to come out. They mentioned the waiter left the check and disappeared again. They, after waiting a good bit of time, actually had to go find the waiter to pay. Strike three..."you're outta here". Well, we are out of there, and won't be back. Baywood is not "fine dining". It is reasonably priced bar food. It is a beautiful golf course with fair bar food, bad service and even worse bottled mixer drinks. Do not go with any higher expectations.
