Some are plain rude, also have to watch out for expired items and items that were used and put back on the shelf, like a face mosturiser I bought that was half empty and hard as a rock. I have been to a few job lots and this is one of the smaller ones. Frequently they will have limited or no inventory of items included in their weekly internet coupon promotion. If I really need something, I will drive over to the Southington store which is better run. I was in the area, and needed a few things, so I stopped here rather than make a special trip. Pretty much your average OSJL. It's set up a bit differently than most of the others I've been to, but I was still able to find just about everything I needed. Staff was pretty lackadaisical, which is pretty much the standard for every OSJL I've visited. I'd probably go back here if I were in the area and needed something quickly. read more

So, when it comes to the basic business: Things always at least look decent here, especially considering it's a second-market retail store. I know it's harder to keep the shelves and racks looking pristine at places like this, so consider that a compliment. Because of the nature of the business, some stock is inconsistent, but you can still find basic needs like aluminum and paper goods, laundry detergent, housewares and such at much better prices than regular retail. And my wife goes nuts over those "Crazy Deal" things. Anyway, just yesterday, I left my wallet there. I got it back the next morning. Love this place! It is not far from my home and I can purchase a lot of my essentials there! I'm crazy about OSJL because of their Crazy Deals; where you purchase certain items and you get a Crazy Deal voucher to use starting the next business day. For an example, there was once a Crazy Deal promotion where you purchased 10 bottles of Perrier seltzer for $8.88 and you got a Crazy Deal card for $8.88. I also once purchased two high-quality lunch bags (which I actually needed) for $12.00 and got a Crazy Deal card for $12.00. With the Crazy Deals cards, I buy essentials like organic coconut oil, toilet paper, Bob's Red Mill products, and gardening stuff. Crazy Deals make Kohl's Cash promotion look lame. read more

According to their website, Ocean State Job Lot is New England's "Home of Adventure Shopping" where customers can get great deals on quality products at discount/closeout prices. There are some Ocean State Job Lot locations around the central Connecticut area that I enjoy shopping at. These locations have a great selection of household products as well as a large variety Bob Red-Mill products and some hard to find grocery items that I will stock up on from time to time. However, the powers that be at Ocean State Job Lot should not be proud of their Berlin location. In comparison to some of their other locations, the Berlin store is unorganized, dirty and claustrophobic. There is no semblance of organization to the store - I found toys along side gardening tools - and as I walked down the aisle I was fearful that the precariously stacked boxes of merchandise would topple down and hit me on the head. Now I like a good deal - and will go to some pretty outrageous extremes to save a few bucks, but this store is a disaster. Save your time, energy, and patience and head to another location. read more

I was there yesterday: what not to like about this store and it's staff?? The store is absolutely IMMACULATE! And, fully stocked with all of the items one needs ~ and all the things you don't know you need until you see them, and think "gosh, that would be great to have... " Also, the PRICES are simply UNBELIEVABLE! Where else can you find a Quart of first quality, REAL New England MAPLE SYRUP for only $9.99? And, not least of all, the staff is - w/o exception - not only helpful & efficient, every one is polite - indeed, they go out of their way to be positive and courteous and let customers know they are appreciated. I wasn't going to write a review, because I normally don't do that, but the experience I had yesterday at this store left me shaking mad. My stepdad and I went here for AC units, and while walking around the store, I remember thinking "Hmm, why don't I shop here more?" Now I know why. Robert, the "store team leader" was extremely rude and unhelpful to both me, and his staff, when the Debit/Credit Card system went down. Robert insisted it was my card, even though they had switched to cash only while I was standing there, and told the cashier, very rudely, to void my payment without asking me. When I chimed in (because it is MY payment of course) he snapped at me stating "I wasn't talking to you! I was talking to her!" This all happened to be when my stepdad had gone to the ATM, which I can't say was a coincidence. Robert may have been extremely unprofessional to me personally, who was only trying to help an extremely chaotic situation, but what bothered me the most was him taking it out on his employees. Those people are on the frontlines, especially now, and during a situation like this, the best thing you could do to help was stand and watch, and pick fights with customers? A very poor choice in leadership by the store and I feel for those employees. I will never shop at this store again, but I will always remember how horrible the "store team leader" made me feel, and the cashier telling me I should write a review, not blaming me for never wanting to shop here again. read more

It's 6:46 pm on 12/23. An older woman at the register next to me wasn't feeling well and the young man (with a great shape up btw!) recognized this, told her to lean on the counter, went to get her something to sit on and continued to help. He continued to tell her it was no problem and said "don't worry, we take care of our guests" - great attitude! Right before this he was beyond kind and patient with another woman. My cashier Noah was also very nice and got the manager's help to sort out some prices. They honored the sales prices that were posted despite it being the wrong date. I appreciate this. Nice store! I wish Ocean State would give them more staff! They clearly needed help but kept a positive attitude anyways. read more

Not right on the main drag, but if you drive a little out of the way you find this oasis of job lots .. What is a job lot? I know the stores have a ton of interesting stuff for cheap prices, sometimes stacked 13 feet tall. I am one to seek out answers, so i looked at the dictionary .. "A collection of cheap items." I guess that sums it up. This Ocean State store is just like all the others, a collection of cheap items. Cheap doesn't mean low quality or old or junk, it just means inexpensive for one reason or another. Sometimes you can find mainstream name brand products for 50% off or more at Job Lot and if you have the time, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal. This location is good - in the same lot as the Harbor Freight, so when i get my cheap tool fix i stop in and do some browsing next door at Ocean State. There is a dollar store next door as well, but I have not been brave enough to venture in. read more

I shop at the Southington store often, today I happened to be in the area so went to the Berlin store for air conditioners. NEVER AGAIN will I shop here. The credit card system was down so I went to the bank down the street to withdraw cash to pay. While I was gone, the "Team Leader" Robert was incredibly rude to my stepdaughter who was waiting at the store. Telling her he wasn't talking to her and it was her card that wasn't working - we tried 3 cards all from different banks - and the system wasn't working at any of the registers - they went to cash only while I was there. Two cashiers, Graham and Kristen, we very nice and apologetic but employees should not have to apologize for poor managers. We went to Walmart and spent the $300. read more

I special ordered a boat patio table from the Berlin location on May 21st. At week 3 of waiting for the table, I called and they said it still wasn't in. It is now week 7 and I called customer service for my money back. After customer service called manager of store, they located my table and said it has been in the store since June 1st but they lost the special order ticket with my name on it. When I called management to make sure my table was ready, I was on hold for 5 minutes and then either manager hung up or muted herself. Finally I hung up in frustration. Don't buy anything from the catalog online!!! Even customer service rep said this happens all the time. Items get lost or tickets get removed!!! Only buy item in store. read more

I have to preface this review with saying that I like Ocean State as a chain, and some of their other stores are 4-5 stars....but sadly, this one is a turd. So, this review is in comparison with some of the better locations. First off, it's very small and unorganized. Everything is just kind of thrown on the shelves and picked over. I went to Ocean State Job Lot at Webster Square looking for K cups. I found three packages on a shelf and it was marked on sale. When I brought the items to the register I was charged full price after I paid I discussed with the cashier that I was overcharged. She called the manager over his name was Robert. He decided to go over to the shelf where I found the coffee and took The sale paper off the shelf. He claimed that the item that I got was not the item that was on the paper. Clearly he should have really used the customer is always right option. Instead he brought My concern back to the register where I was I told the cashier I was charge the right price. I asked why I wasn't offered one free item as the Connecticut state law demands for items that were wrong up wrong. He said that come out of this law does not pertain to Ocean State Job Lot. I told him I beg to differ and I would indeed Write a review. I thought the manager could've done better. I do you remember him in a managerial position at Walmart on the Berlin Turnpike. Hmmmm? They've moved from one end of a decrepit shopping plaza to the other end, and into a bigger building that used to house A&P Super Food Mart. I've gotten some real steals on name brand clothing, and my husband bought a portable fireplace a year or two ago at such a great price, he went back and bought another. However, shopping here is hit or miss, since naturally, you never know what you're going to find. Plus, the prices can be found cheaper at regular retailers if you're willing to shop around. Not the most pleasant shopping experience, since none of the employees seem particularly interested in customer service. There are always lines and only one or two registers open, and recently on a Wednesday afternoon I waited 20 minutes while no less than three cashiers and a manager attempted to find a SKU for an obscure product instead of maybe using one for a similar product. The manager never made eye contact nor uttered a word to the customers, and actually tripped into me in her haste to "go on break," while the cashier blamed "computer problems" for the poor service which was in reality caused by poorly trained employees. Bottom line: possible lower prices, but is shopping here really worth it? read more

Having worked for this company for a bit I can attest to how terrible this one is. The management is terrible and rude. Before they moved they had no space and the store was a mess, now that they moved they have more space so the store looks cleaner. They really need to invest in an outside trash can with an actual top so their garbage doesn't blow all over the plaza and then they don't even bother to pick it up even though they own the entire plaza now. They have a decent selection of stuff and you can't beat the prices honestly. Pretty much one of those stores you find things yourself cause staff is impossible to find and even if you do the items they get is just overstock from CVS and Walgreen's and shit so they don't always have the same stuff for long nor is there a real way to look up an item or anything like that so its a really hit or miss store. All in all don't expect too much from this place and make sure you are ready for a long check out wait, they have like 9 registers and everyone is register trained yet I've only ever seen a max of 2 cashiers up there at one time. Also be careful in the parking lot in the winter because this past winter they didn't do anything about the ice and someone slipped and hit their head and got taken away in an ambulance. read more
