Not sure I understand why the further west in NJ that we dine, the worse and more amateurish is the service. Don't mean to sound like a snob, but my family is noticing how the wait staff in suburban NJ restaurants appear to care less or are poorly trained about true hospitality when compared to restaurants where we live in NE Bergen county let alone most Manhattan dining establishments. We expected more from our experience at Oceanos frankly. Our server was too quick to clear our 2 out of 3 of our parties plates (while my wife had not yet finished her appetizer) and seemed uninterested and disconnected in her answers to several questions we had about the menu showing no spark of enthusiasm for the chefs' cooking and such. But...the food was pretty good.... I shared a crab cake with my daughter that was delicious with little sign of any fillers. My entree was stuffed shrimp that was good and beautifully plated with roasted halved potato. My wife's lamb chops were delicious, generous in portion and appeared to be of US origin. In our opinion, Oceanos is not a destination restaurant. Would probably prefer The Oceanaire (Hackensack) or even Legal Seafood (as adverse we are to dine in a chain restaurant). read more

I would never have known this place existed if it wasn't for Yelp. I was browsing for a local interesting restaurant the other day, some place that I have not been to yet, when I came across it and noticed it had very good reviews. Their website looked great also, so we decided to give it a try. We went for an 8pm dinner on a Saturday night and the place was packed! They valet all cars and there was a good sized line of cars at the valet. It's probably a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation. I now know this for the next time I go here. They have two rooms. A larger dining room to the left of the entrance, and then a smaller dining room with a bar to the right. We hung out at the bar for almost an hour until they had a table ready. Every single table was full the entire time we were waiting. They give you olives to munch on at the bar. Since it's a Greek restaurant, I had to try their Greek wines. Unfortunately, when I asked the bartender about the wines, she wasn't very helpful at all and had almost no knowledge about them. The Nasiakos Moschofilero is super light and very dry. It's almost flavorless. The Kouros White Blend, also from Greece, is sweeter, a bit heavier, with fruity and floral overtones to it. I definitely preferred the Moschofilero which went really well with my grilled fish. The Oysters Rockefeller were amazing! They were heavier on the spinach and lighter on the cheese, but pure yummy. The Lump Crab Meat Cocktail was a martini glass full of hearty chunks of jumbo lump crab meat, and was delicious also. Whole grilled fish are one of their specialties so I had to try that. I had the Grilled Branzino since I had never tried that kind of fish before. It was served with a lemon roasted potato and green beans. Branzino is a European Sea Bass. It's a lean white fish with moist tender flakes. Everything was cooked perfectly. My friend had the Grilled Lobster with Crabmeat Stuffing. He was extremely pleased with it. We were so stuffed after eating so skipped desserts. On the way out, I noticed a container of individually wrapped mints. I tasted one and found out that they were Ouzo mints. So good! Don't miss the mints on your way out! I can't wait to go back and try more of the excellent food here. It's a great atmosphere. Nice casual yet classy decor. Very comfortable vibe. We arrived for a Sunday dinner at 7:30pm with a party of 9. The restaurant was mostly empty as there were, at most, 2 tables in the main dining area and 2 other tables seated in the bar area where we had a reserved table. We had dined here on 2 or 3 other occasions and had very good experiences. ...which is why it's so disappointing to go through such a sub-par service. Service: While we had no issues with our waitress, we all did notice the unorganized, haphazard, service when the orders arrived. It appeared that the bus staff didn't find out who had ordered which appetizer and randomly places orders on empty spots on the table. We had requested the crab cakes to be served as an entree but it was brought out with the appetizers. When we informed the server (not the waitress) of the mistake, she couldn't have appeared more annoyed. No apology, no effort to correct the situation. Each subsequent plate delivery was met with the same no-eye-contact, didn't-want-to-be-there, having-a-really-bad-day attitude. Not expected in a restaurant that charges the prices they do. ......the same plate of Crab Cakes that was likely sitting under a heat lamp was brought back out 20 minutes later with the other entrees. Food: Mussels Lyonnaise - Overly frozen mussels had no business being served. No flavor with a mealy texture. While we didn't expect fresh-off-the-boat freshness on a Sunday, we certainly didn't expect the kitchen to think it was ok to serve what brought out, especially for $17. Seafood Linguini - The shrimp included was in worse shape than the mussels. I was stunned that a $39 entree could be served with flavorless, frozen, apparently improperly thawed out soggy and mushy shrimp. It wasn't just one or two shrimps in the dish. Every shrimp in the dish was inedible. Apple Truffle - It wasn't until after the waitress talked up the Apple Truffle and got the entire table excited for it that we ordered 3 orders for the table. Minutes later she comes back to tell us that they have none left. The restaurant was empty. This is their top dessert. How does a waitress not know they're out before she takes the order? I can only conclude from this experience that they don't have adequate quality control on Sunday's. We wouldn't expect any of the above to occur at any restaurant that would charge top tier restaurant prices as they do. Expectations should be much higher for a nearly $900 meal. Very sad. read more

Generous portions for all of the appetizers. 7 people shared 3 appetizers and it was more than enough. The octopus was my favorite and the calamari was really good too. They bring olives and a basket of fresh bread as well. The menu has a lot of options including fresh salads, steaks, seafood, whole fish and a raw bar. I ordered the grilled lobster which came with French fries AND asparagus. You can add jumbo lump crab meat stuffing for an extra $19. The actual dish was enormous but there wasn't a lot of lobster meat once I cracked it open. The entire staff is friendly and the service was superb. Oceanos was great! I visited Oceanos recently for dinner and I had a great time. While the restaurant was a little quiet (it was Monday after all...), the staff was super friendly, and the food was great! We tried the calamari (yum), and the tomato/mozzarella salad. I had the appetizer crab cakes for dinner. Everything was really delicious and flavorful. I enjoyed that the crab cakes were nicely done, with a lot of crab meat and not too greasy/fried. This place is a hidden gem. My girlfriend had been wanting to try it for months, and we finally made a reservation for lunch today. Food were terrific, and the staff and management were even better! My girlfriend and I had the grilled octopus, and it's probably one of the best I've tasted. Super tender and well balanced flavor with the peppers and onions, olive oil, and hint of citrus/acid from the lemon. My girlfriend had the almond crusted salmon with pilaf, and it was cooked perfectly. Especially it's something different from the typical mashed potato side. I had the special of the day, which was the pan seared halibut on a bed of arugula salad. The fish was perfectly cooked, crisp outside,tender inside, and not overly seasoned. Highly recommended if you're looking for something light. The best part about the place are the people. They made our anniversary special. I've given them a short notice that I was going to propose to my girlfriend and so they made sure we had the right setting. They put us in the private side of the restaurant, just quiet and romantic. From the beginning everybody were very attentive and super nice. They went above and beyond to make sure that the proposal goes smoothly. They added the message on our dessert just as I had asked. They even recorded it without me asking. As soon as she said yes, they brought us complementary champagne! They made us feel like family. Hugs from everyone which made everything just spectacular. Dinner with friends on a Friday night was extremely disappointing. I ordered arctic char, which was entirely flavorless. No sauce or seasoning, and undercooked. It was actually plated with the skin side up. None of us fared much better than that. The prices are also extremely high, in fact higher than any other local restaurant I can think of. "The Vesuvius is an eruption of flavor and joy!" Needless to say, my step-son (and my wife and I) *loved* the dessert. It is composed of chocolate mousse, dark chocolate ganache, and moist cheesecake. (I don't usually describe the meal in reverse order, but how can you not lead with that quote??) Earlier we had enjoyed the swordfish--which was moist and flavorful, and a snapper and crab meat special that was pretty good, though not great. The assorted accoutrements (vegetables, potatoes, and rice) were ok--not up to the standard set by the fish. We started with the Eggplant and Zucchini chips and the grilled Octopus--both of which were delicious. Found this place on Yelp. We were heading to our NJ hotel from LGA and stopped here for dinner. The fresh seafood and fresh baked bread sealed the deal. We arrived at 9 and sat at the bar to watch the Celtics. The place was empty, but that's expected at 9pm on a Monday. For an app, we had the fried calamari. There was a grilled calamari option, but I love fried foods. The bread was great, i think I had half a loaf. They also had a plate of olives, but I didn't have any. For my entree, I had the Yellow Fin Tuna. It came with noodles, which was prepared in a Chinese Veggie lo mein style. The noodle were awesome! The Tuna was good too. Service was great. When we signed the check, my colleague mentioned the that Oceanos pen wrote very well. So the bartender gave us each a pen to go. Came here to celebrate a girlfriends birthday after another restaurant we booked said they weren't doing outdoor dining that day. So glad this last minute change happened as we really enjoyed most of our food. We sat outside and since it was noon on a Friday, plenty of tables and distancing. We ordered three appetizers: steamed little neck clams, grilled octopus, and tuna tartare. The first two were excellent but the tuna tartare was lacking. Very little tuna and the sauce was overpowering. For entree we ordered the seared scallops and lavraki. Both were excellent. I had a glass of Sancerre which paired wonderfully with our food and my friend had a half bottle of sparkling rose. The waiter was very nice and attentive (especially as my guest is very picky and asks a million questions), however he did have a little bit of body odor. All good as it was extremely humid that day. Overall, excellent experience and though prices were high, portions were great. Will definitely be looking to return! read more

Made reservations the previous week for Sunday, October 4th, 5pm to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Upon our arrival we were escorted to our "Reserved" table by the same woman who took our reservation. Support staff wasted no time bringing us a plate of assorted olives and olive oil along with a basket of the most amazing bread, which was nice and hot. (On a personal note, the presentation of bread is one of the primary things by which I form my opinion on a restaurant) Delicious! Then our waiter Matthew introduced himself, went over that evening's specials, and took our drink order. Our drinks arrived promptly, by which time we decided on our meals. My wife chose the beet salad for her appetizer and I chose the oysters Rockefeller. Both were beautifully presented and delicious! For our entrees, my wife decided on the surf and turf, and I the 10 oz filet mignon. Every facet of the meal was expertly prepared! Nikos came by, introduced himself and wished us a happy anniversary (nice touch). After our meal, Matthew presented us with a delicious complimentary piece of cake. Overall I can't say enough about how positive the entire experience was, and YES we'll be coming back! P.S. I don't normally leave reviews, most places fall somewhere within my expected expectations, so I don't bother, but I couldn't not leave a review of our experience this past Friday. Boy were we disappointed with our meal this past Friday. Maybe it was all the good reviews that led us to believe this meal would be worth the money, it was NOT. Four of us went out for a nice night out and spent almost 600 including tip. I'll start with the fact that 2 of us order the oyster tasting, but only one was brought out and we had to flag down the waiter to bring our second one. There was no description or explanation of which of the five different oysters was which. I actually had to again flag down our waiter, who appeared to guess which ones were which. At 4.50 an oyster with 5 different varieties one would expect it to be presented and explained when it was brought to the table, otherwise i would have just ordered 5 of the same variety. Also they weren't shucked properly and i had to detach from the shell myself. The cocktail sauce had an extremely heavy Worcestershire flavor and the mignonette sauce was terrible. The $27 tuna ceviche was served with ice cold French fries on top, why? McDonald's has better fries. The only good appetizer was the octopus salad. The shrimp appetizer was mediocre. I asked for an extra dirty martini, I had to send that back as there was practically no olive juice. For the entrees, two members of the party ordered the Chilean sea bass. For $55 a plate you would expect a flavorful perfectly cooked fish with a delicious side of risotto. Well, what was received was 2 bland pieces of fish with a risotto that was so bland that a knorr pasta side from the grocery store would have been a step up. I myself ordered the Ahi tuna salad. Between it getting cooked black and blue and rare I told our waiter "chefs recommendation" and it came out well done, I am not kidding. I sent it back, and it came back appropriately rare for a $45 tuna steak and was much better and quite tasty, but the fact that first one was even brought to the table was offensive and the chef should be ashamed for a sushi grade tuna to be served like grilled chicken. I then had to wait while all the other members of the party had their food. The last member of our party ordered a steak, which he said was good, but nothing better than something he would have made at home. Again for a $65 steak I would expect something better than our limited at home culinary expertise. And that was it, no dessert no coffee, just literally the most overpriced and underwhelming meal WE have ever had as everyone was in complete agreement. I see the owner respond to many reviews and that's great, but offering your apologies while raking in a weeks pay for some people doesn't feel super sincere. Asking them to come give you another try and spend another 600 bucks is actually offensive. I know they will say you could have always sent it back we want to make it right, but i don't see how that could have happened, it wasn't one dish that was wrong or bad, it was everything. Sorry but I wouldn't even want to eat what came out to the table after everyone at it sent their food back to the kitchen. It happened with literally everybody being so let down with the quality of this meal. This restaurant is higher than Manhattan prices but it's in Fairlawn, but their offerings do nothing to warrant there prices. Truthfully even if the meal was half of what we paid, the review about the quality would be the same, we just wouldn't fee so robbed. Also don't be fooled, several of the less stellar reviews and the ones that are "not recommended" by Yelp are quite recent. Lastly, having personally been in the restaurant business for half my life, we always over tip, but we only left a very generous 15% this weekend as our waiter never seemed to be available, didn't check if we needed anything after the food was brought didn't explain things and was overall while not unfriendly per se not welcoming in the way one would expect. I'm not sure how a waiter that seemed so inexperienced and lacked menu knowledge would be able to work at an establishment. how management wouldn't have an issue with this boggles my mind.Several other reviews fall inline with our experience, so I know I am not being overly critical. I will give credit to the beautiful outdoor dining area. read more

Brought my boyfriend here for dinner to celebrate his birthday. Parking is valet parking. The valet actually held the door of the car open for me to get out and held the door for us to get into the restaurant. I hadn't seen this done anywhere for quite some time. I thought it was a nice touch. Once inside, we checked in with the hostess who seated us. We had a nice table with plenty of room. Our server, Emily, was pleasant, friendly, and attentive all evening. We shared a bottle of white wine. They serve homemade bread and olives. We started off with Mediterranean spreads for an appetizer which were amazing. Our entrees were outstanding. My boyfriend had a Halibut special that was served with asparagus and vegetable risotto. I had the seafood linguini which was huge. I had to take some of it home. We did not order dessert only because we were so full. Definitely plan to return. read more
