This is a go to spot for our family. Everything we've tried in the menu is great. Plus, the service is always 10/10 and if there's a wait you can walk around and window shop or catch the live music down the street. My husband and I are normally big fans of this restaurant. Today we ordered a Cobb salad and bratwurst and potato pancakes. The bratwurst was underwhelming, came out tiny and flavorless. My son (17 yo) and I were out running errands just prior to the 4th of July holiday. We were over on 4th street () and decided to stop in at the Oceanview Diner for brunch. The 50's/60's esque decor drew us in, the sights and fragrances of the deliciousness on the tables everywhere, held us there. It was a sunny day, so the area was busy and we had a small wait. No problem, gave us some time to catch up and, 'people with their puppies', watch. The ambience was lively and very, "Northern California", i.e. light and breezy. The food was WONDEFUL. My son had the lemon, poppyseed pancakes, (I got a small taste). They were, fluffy, flavorful, with that marvelous nutty lemon flavor, that you want with this dish. I opted for the potato pancakes, with apple sauce and sour cream. They were prepared to perfection. Golden brown, crisp edges, delicate, tender, moist inside. They all but melted in my mouth at the first taste. In addition to the food, the staff was cheerful and attentive, the gentleman who seated us, was the exact blend of maitre d' and circus barker. A fantastic, amiable man, he was the absolute topper to the entire experience! I would give10/10 stars! Next time, we'll take the whole family! read more

The subpar rating is for service- the couple seated after us next to our table had their order taken first, food served and check before we got ours. Waited far too long for an order of pancakes, potato pancakes and suasage. The syrup came in a container slightly larger than a thimble. Nothing special about the food for the price. Expect a long line. Quality brings demand. I have only done breakfast here but its very good. I split my allegiance between the great buttermilk pancakes and the Souffle pancake. Yum. A friend from Philly vouched for the authenticity of the scrapple. Really good coffee. I know, why mention it, but have you ever had breakfast ruined by crappy coffee? I've had a bad experience here a long time ago but decided to give it a chance today, I work nearby and decided to get a quick breakfast before I start my day, didn't turn out quick lol. The manager or host sat me at the counter and I ordered my drink and food. My latte was made and I had to ask for another glass to mix it up, looked like a cappuccino more than a latte but no big deal. I waited a while for my food and I understand they were busy but when I observed how the food was being made, omg I had to run lol, I asked for my order to be cancelled and to pay for my latte. The manager was furious about it, instead of apologizing she run to the kitchen to ask them to cancel the order,she seemed very frustrated and mad at me. I told her I wasn't going to eat that food after I saw how they were making it, the chef was literally dipping his fingers in the eggs, he was wiping his hand on his uniform. Also utensils were dirty, the people next me asked for plastic forks instead. There was only two people cooking and they seemed so overwhelmed. I will never go back there or recommend to anyone. We went here with an open mind and the only thing that blew our minds were the prices. yes, we expected a bit of an inflation prices but this was a bit much to be honest. on top of the prices..there was a mandatory "kitchen staff 3%". I am all for supporting staff, but with this in mind, we adjusted what we would normally tip to match that mandatory 3%. So i hope that 3% is really supporting the staff.. lets talk prices...and food quality We ordered the Maryland $18 it was basically little bits of corned beef mixed with mashed potatoes like. I was pretty dissapointed to how little meat was even in there. came with 2 eggs and a pastry. The flavor wasnt there..to a point i was using plenty of salt and pepper. then there was the souffle pancake... $21. im not sure if im adjusted to inflation...but thats alot i guess for breakfast? would i come back? very likely not. read more

I recently met a friend there on a Monday morning. We had an expensive breakfast approximately $70.00. We sat for 1 hour and when our waitress asked me if I wanted more coffee the hostess came over and told her in front us to not give us anything else because was had been there 1 hour and we needed to leave. They had multiple tables outside at the counter seating and other tables free. We were 2 woman of color and I felt completely disrespected and offended. We told the manager to no avail. This cute little dinner has all of the classic menu options, and I loved the seasonal holiday options for drinks (e.g. caramel apple and peppermint chocolate). I ordered the Maryland breakfast and my partner ordered potato pancakes w/ apple sauce and a bratwurst. Unlike other brunch areas in Berkeley, I felt that our plates lacked balance, color, and veggies. Also, the main flavor of my meal was salt, which made the corned beef hash to bread ratio a little too high. Really tasty breakfast! I hadn't been here before because it's normally packed on weekends when I'm on 4th street. We happened to be there Monday morning and got a table easily. The food and service were great, the only reason I am taking a star was because a strange staff person who wasn't our server threw the check on our table rudely when we were mid meal, then stepped on me pushing to get to another table when we were leaving. I was going here for decades when it was Bettte's Ocean View Diner back in the day.. I miss the jukebox and the large overhead pie in the entrance.. That being said they're a few thing being different... The Maryland Breakfast used to have more corned beef, now it's more potatoes.. The soufflé pancakes take a bit longer in real life.. still awesome though.. The scrapple is still good but seems more 'mass produced'.. I give it a 4.5 outta 5.. still great but for some reason something's missing.. not their fault.. I will drive up there for another 1.5 hours to go there again in a heartbeat.. read more

Really tasty food, but the kitchen is so incredibly slow. They just can't handle volume when restaurant is at capacity. Front of house needs to stop seating people when they know the kitchen is at max, which would help. 1 hour plus wait from order to food is just not acceptable. read more

This place has very quickly become my go-to brunch spot. There has usually been a bit of a wait when I visit, but that's for a reason, and it's always been worth it! The space is both modern and classic, and always bustling. Seriously props to the staff for holding it down while still providing great and friendly service. My go-to is the Mexican scramble, it's seriously delicious and the perfect savory breakfast/brunch dish. I've also tried their mimosa and their spiked apple cider, both were perfect. I had never had such terrible service in a restaurant/diner before. Never before had I not left a tip. We ate outside and I gave our credit card. They never brought the bill and credit card to us. I had to go inside and they just left the check and my credit card on the counter. I was very lucky that no one took my card. I was so upset over this. I will never go back there again.
