This place is right next to the train tracks, so when a train comes by it can be really noisy--and startling if they blow their horn (which they often do). I was with a group of people and ordered hummus,taco tots and bacon fat fries for our appetizer. It was all delicious. This is a great burger place. We went with friends, and we all enjoyed our burgers. The dessert, I remember not enjoying, but I cannot remember why. However, the tots and fries and burgers were spot on. The prices are good and the service was excellent. I do recommend their seasonal cocktails. My best friend and I really enjoyed ours. They change by the season, and we went at the tailend of winter. They were still winter themed. Excellent! I highly recommend at least coming for the burgers and the cocktails if you drink. When ever we visit Indiana dunes we always stay in Chesterton, In. We always eat at Octave Grill, this time it was no longer there. It was a real bummer! The Bed and Breakfast we are staying at said it had moved. What a relief. We ordered 2 fish sandwiches, the name does not give it justice, it is fantastic, the sandwich came with fries, but I also ordered the beer Mac and cheese. Jeff had two beers and I had two teas. The waitress treated us so well, never have a bad experience. If you go to Chesterton and don't eat here you have made a great mistake. read more

We were in the area for the dunes and stopped by for some food after seeing the good reviews. The space was well decorated and unique. The space is a little small but we were able to all get seated but two of our group had to sit at a different table. I had the Adrian sandwich which is pulled pork with Cole slaw on top. It was good! I really enjoyed the flavors of all the food. We also tried the taco tots and bacon fat fries. I preferred the taco tots more. read more

The Octave Grill is hard to get into, due to it's popularity and size. Regarding the former, we put our name in and received a 60 minute wait estimate. We were seated around the 2 hour mark. The space itself is small and I counted around 18 chairs. And once we were settled in, it did seem to take awhile for the food to make it out of the kitchen. So with that, I could end this review at 3 Stars as I hate to wait and dislike it even more when time estimates are wildly off the mark and things seem a little slow inside. Yet, there is so much to like about this place, starting with: What is a Portland (Oregon) -style restaurant doing in Chesterton IN? I was charmed by this vibe and wood/brick decor the minute I finally got into this place. Second, the food was fabulous. I ordered some odd burger topping combination (which included blue cheese) and it was probably the best grass fed patty package that I had ever enjoyed. I also picked off my friends' tater tot choices (I went for a more healthy side) and found their take on this Midwest staple to be stellar. Then there was the draft beer list, which although small, was well curated from mostly local sources. Who knew that this area of Indiana was such a epicenter for great micro-brews? I chose well with a beer that brewed with coconut and then a second delicious chose from another Northern Indiana neighborhood. Table service was fun, informative, and friendly. My friend Jesse T. tells me that it's run by a husband and wife (our waiter for the evening) team, who actually lived for a spell in Portlandia. I chose this place based on the pretty stellar reviews on Yelp. It is a very small little place in downtown Chesterton not far from the Indiana Sand Dunes. I got here relatively early for the dinner crowd so it wasn't busy at all. I imagine when it does get busy it can be uncomfortable to be there, I would not recommend dinning here on a weekend evening unless you enjoy feeling like a cramped sardine. That all being said, it's a cute place and the two employees working were friendly. The drink menu is impressive for such a small place, a bunch of great craft beer choices, some wine and some super interesting cocktails. Unfortunately I had a drive back to my hotel so I did not partake. Every review suggested to order a burger so that is what I came here for. The two things that appealed to me were the fact that they use grass fed beef and that they offer gluten free buns. I ordered the fried cheese burger but got the cheese non fried to make it gluten free, it was topped with cheddar cheese, olive tapenade and roasted red peppers. It sounded delicious and had so much potential, sadly I was underwhelmed. I ordered my burger medium but it was more toward medium rare. The burger was a bit dry and needed a sauce of some sort to dress it up a bit. The gf bun was good and not papery like some I've had. Nom, nom, nom. So delicious! We were driving through Indiana, stopped to see a friend, and he recommended this spot for dinner. One of the best recommendations ever! The restaurant itself is very small. When we walked in, all the tables were full, but the hostess/server took our name and cell phone number and said she would call us when a table was ready. And after a quick beer down the street, we got the call that our table was ready. The beer and cocktail list were impressive. No lengthy by any means, but impressive. When you have quality offerings, a few of said quality offerings is all you need. I was torn between a cider cocktail and a beer I had never heard of before. I went with the beer. The appetizers were almost overwhelming. Again, not a lengthy list, but they all sounded yummy. We finally narrowed it down to two and went with the buffalo fries and goat cheese fondue. Absolutely loved both! For the burger, we went with sharing the Holy Trinity. Again, absolutely loved it! A unique combo of flavors that were subtle enough to compliment the burger as opposed to overwhelm it. The bun and toppings were all perfect. And the sweet potato tots on the side were also great. Of course, we couldn't pass up dessert. We split the white chocolate chip brownie with vanilla ice cream. Pretty basic as far as their dessert offerings went, but I totally loved it. I'm extremely picky about my brownies and this one was a true winner. I love finding (or getting recommendations for) unique spots like this in random towns. The ambiance was great - casual with just a hint of hip and trendy, and a nice dose of charm. And the service was prompt, friendly, and thorough. All in all, an excellent place for a burger. Interstate 94 is a road that I travel often and I hoped to get dinner at Red Cup Cafe in Chesterton. However, Red Cup closed early (second time this has happened when I've tried to go there) so I checked Yelp for another Chesterton recommendation and found Octave Grill. Ed, our server, was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable and the kitchen was very fast. The food is great with house made dressings and sauces, grass-fed beef for the burgers, cheese from Fair Oaks farms, and a great selection of beer and mixed drinks. We got there before 5 so we ordered 2 appetizers from the Happy Hour menu. The goat cheese fondue was delicious and the Cajun tater tots were crispy and spicy. Both were great with the lavendar margarita. My daughter got the burger of the month with the mango salsa, bacon, and jerk mayo and I had the Hamburgesa with guacamole, bacon, and ancho sauce. Both were very tasty. My only complaint is that they could have had a few spicier burger selections. In addition to burgers, they had salad, soup, sandwiches, and a few entrees. We decided to stop here on our way home after landing in Chicago from a trip to California. It's the classic small town indiana restaurant with a local vibe, friendly people, and fantastic food. We ordered the pickle fries for our appetizer and they were a home run. Crispy coating over delicious fresh pickles were a perfect warmup for our entrees of a perfectly prepared Octave Basic cheeseburger and hand-cut crispy French fries. The welcome or lack thereof received not only on one but two visits left us puzzled. We figured the first occasion was a bad day for the greeter, so we would give it another try., alas....ame result. We didn't feel any animosity towards who we were, we just felt the not so nice greetings were the result of individuals who did not want to be doing what they were doing. To summarize our experience, after we left I said "that was worth stopping for" (on our way to Michigan from Chicago) and my fiancé responded "not only was that worth stopping for, but it might even be worth just driving to Indiana for." We came tonight (Saturday) around 7:30pm and it was packed, but only two groups ahead of us. They quoted us 20 minutes but we only waited about 15. There's a small bar area to the right when you walk in that seats maybe 6 and also has a small bar top facing toward the street and I think you can order food there as well. Inside is small but very cool decor and great layout. The hostess and our waitress were super sweet and extremely efficient. I had a glass of the Sauv Blanc and it was fine for 7 bucks, not great (but I'm picky). They were out of the beer my guy wanted but they have a great selection to choose from. I had the Figgy Piggy burger on a gluten free bun (was shocked they had the option but so grateful, looked like an Udi's bun to me). My guy had the one with the onion ring. We were SO impressed. The meat is sooooo good and perfectly cooked. I ordered it medium rare and it was spot on. I scarfed the whole thing down to my surprise. My guy loved his too and the taco tots he ordered with his were delish. I had the side salad with mine which was also great. I've probably been to Octave dozens of times and have sampled most of everything on the menu. It's all terrific. Starting with their spicy edamame is always good. That and the hummus plate or fried pickles are great choices. All of the beef is grass fed -- making the patties particularly delicious. The burger of the month is always a thing to behold. Inventive flavors and terrific combinations. And, should you grow weary of beef, their black bean burger, and their chicken sandwich is fantastic too. Leave room for desert. They are solid. Excellent burgers worth a trip albeit somewhat overpriced for a tiny spot in Chesterton Indiana in a low rent space. While the burgers were tasty, they were not on target for the doneness ordered. We should've expected as much when we ordered and the server indicated the cook couldn't manage to cook a burger between medium and rare. The decor is sparse but cute enough. They advertised as gluten free so I was super excited to get a hamburger but when we arrived (a dining spot in route to Chicago) their menu didn't have gluten free items and their idea of a gluten free burger was bun-less. What was gluten free were their salads and ice cream for desert. And those tastes were average. My partner (who isn't gluten free) thoroughly enjoyed the taste of his burger and fries. All seating is low-top, wood tables and chairs for two or four. This is a great place to go for a date! Staff is friendly, bathrooms clean. Just not a place for someone with food allergies. Do not judge a book by its cover. This fabulous gem in downtown Chesterton is next to the tracks and its outward appearance belies the beauty inside. The food is exceptional, and the service is friendly and professional. It does not seat more than 40 people, but if you have to wait, you will not be sorry. Drinks are unique and tasty. Burgers and entrees are creative and abundant. Sides are great. The cole slaw is sweet and fresh. Desserts are large enough to share. Frozen key lime pie is a house specialty.
