I can't say enough good things about this dental office! After chipping my front tooth late on a Saturday afternoon, I called about 20 dental offices searching for emergency care. Most were closed, a few took messages, but no one could see me - until this office called me back within 20 minutes. Not only did the dentist offer to stay late so I could drive an hour to get there, but the entire team - Crystal at the front desk and Kim who took my x-rays and assisted in the work - was incredibly warm, kind, and accommodating. They welcomed me in with genuine care and empathy when I was in a lot of pain and feeling panicked. The dentist had me looking good as new in no time and went above and beyond by performing a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the overall state of my teeth. He even provided a second opinion on some recent recommendations from my regular dentist, which I really appreciated. I left not only out of pain but with so much value from this last-minute visit. A fish bone got stuck in between my teeth when I had dinner last Friday. I started to get really anxious as I tried to gargle and used waxed floss, but nothing helped. I called and left voicemail, and within few minutes, Dr. Rutley returned my call and had scheduled me the following morning. I didn't feel anything when he removed the fragment. It was like magic. He also uses a more advanced 3D scan to examine my teeth to ensure I don't have further issues. I would highly recommend Dr. Rutley for his fast response and skill. Dr. Rutley is one of the greatest miracles I have experienced in some time. The day before Thanksgiving one of my crowns broke off. He was able to slip me in immediately. His staff was so warm and kind, especially Maye, who is just a wonderful human being. As I had not seen Dr Rutley before, they needed to take a series of many xrays and only charged $99! My normal dentist charges $250 for only 6-9. Dr Rutley took over 20 for just $99. Thank heavens he is so thorough. It turned out I had a cavity under the crown that popped off... AND he found a cavity in a back crown that my previous (and extremely expensive) dentist never detected just 3 months prior because he barely looked at the xrays. Dr Rutley was able to fix both teeth, one needed a route canal, which I barely even felt (!) that evening. The DAY before Thanksgiving, he and his team were with me until 11pm. He was able to get me into my permanent crowns two days later! This was a a holiday and he got me in, despite being very busy, fixed the issue I came in for, and detected a dire one missed by my original doctor. For an emergency dentist and a dentist with such experience, his prices were extremely reasonable. His team created a night guard for me so I no longer grind at night, which was the cause of the issue. My teeth are absolutely flawless and now he is my new permanent dentist. While I was in the office, I saw people who had clearly practiced zero tooth care or were bleeding out of their mouths in emergency, become extremely rude because they didn't want to pay $99 for his to get a thorough sense of their teeth through x-rays even though they were coming to HIM on a holiday. No other dentist is open on a holiday. That sort of entitled behavior, when D Rutley was just trying to help them with the xray info dire to understanding their needs was just plain ignorant. So the people in the reviews that complain about seeing Dr Rutley on an emergency basis and him asking for x-rays, need to check themselves. He is an amazing doctor. I look forward to going in for my teeth cleanings and appointments. I am overjoyed that I found Dr Rutley and his team. They saved one of my teeth and healed the other. I called Dentistry of Del Mar on a Friday at 11:00am. I had excruciating pain in my mouth due to an infection in my tooth. I had been taking antibiotics for two days but was still i pain and had been unable to get an appointment anywhere else due to the New Year holiday. At 8pm the same day, the dentist returned my call and listened to my concerns about the pain I was having in my front tooth and the left side of my mouth. He then said he would be able to get me in on Sunday at 11:00am. I was grateful. Sunday, 11:00am. I arrive at the office. They're in the process of cleaning tools from the previous day, the assistant informs me. No worries, I wait patiently. 10 or so minutes later, I'm ushered back. It's 11:20. Full mouth x-rays are done since I'm a new patient. Finished at 11:40. The doctor came in at 11:45. Dr. Mark was quick to delve in and assess the issue after I explained the situation. I had 3 fillings that had been filled the week prior and he stated that due to the depth of the drilling I needed to have a coat of anti-sensitivity on them. I'm not an expert, but what I know is that what he did turned my whole experience around. Literally after walking out of his office within 15 minutes my pain was gone. He also mentioned that I grind my teeth, which I knew but explained that that was what was making my teeth even more painful--the fact that I was grinding on them and I didn't have the sensitivity coat on them. I am grateful he was willing to get me in (on a SUNDAY NOW LESS!!) If you have a dental emergency, he will get it taken care of! My friend who is 81/2 months pregnant with twins visited this character . As she is not a yelper , I am sharing her experience for her . According to my very pregnant and incredibly sweet and polite friend , this is what went down : "Experience started with nonexistent bedside manner , he did not explain what he would be working on before he numbed my mouth . He started working on my teeth before numbing took full effect. Painful, obviously. Once work was done and numbing wore off, my teeth were sharp and rough where they had not been previously. When I returned to have them evaluated, he looked and said they were fine . After pointing out to him the teeth in question, he admitted that three of the four of them needed to be completely Re-done . His curious response to this was that he "didn't know how this happened." I demanded and received a refund on said teeth . This was the only decent thing to happen which was only partially decent due to the fact that he refunded my out of pocket , but my dental insurance had been maxed Out by his charges which were not refunded . To make matters worse , when I requested my X-rays to share with a reputable dentist , it took nearly 2 months of basically begging - I finally showed up in person and refused to leave until my X-rays were supplied. This was no easy feat being as how i am as previously stated, on the precipice of giving birth to not one but 2 humans . I have taken the time to make this known so that others won't have to endure the stress and pain that this con artist put me through . " read more

I was a patient of Dr. Rutley for many years. I decided, recently, to move to Solana Family Dental. When I did that, I was told by the new dentist that I needed to have Dr. Rutley's office send, via email, my full set of x-rays because my insurance only covers them every 5 years. I have had the worst experience in trying get MY x-rays from this dentist's office. They have given the run-around with excuse after excuse. I have called about 10 different times being told that I would receive the x-rays later that day. Well, this last time, I called and was hung up on. Why not just tell me you aren't going to send them? Very stressful situation. This is what I get for all of the years I went to this dentist. They show absolutely zero respect for their patients. Dr. Rutley is a life... and tooth saver. He has salvaged two of my failed root canals from an endodontist in Carlsbad. I had them done in 2015. He problem solved and has fixed everything with excellent quality work. He is a perfectionist. My father actually recommended him to me. He really is an expert at diagnosis and performs high quality work. I am so happy! I was in so much pain with these other root canals that in my opinion were poorly done and proved to be so. This dental office is by far the worst, most unprofessional, deceitful, lying group of personnel I have ever had the horrible experience of dealing with. We were overcharged, charged without authorization to charge even more and billed something completely different than what they submitted to our dental plan. He must clearly be in financial trouble to take the time to charge so much and go after every penny that he clearly has no right to charge to begin with. His staff is so dumb and defensive every time you talk to them, it's uncomfortable from the first time you step in the door. Emergency clients are about the only clientele he has. UPDATE : what a joke. 19 days after I post a bad review I get a letter from them saying I now owe money after I have received nothing for 6 months. coincidence? I think not. I will be fighting this. This review is a little over due but I think it's worth posting about to warn others of what they might experience and what to look for when coming to this place of business. (I received an email from them recently that reminded me to post) About 6 months ago I had an accident that left me with a chipped front tooth on a Saturday night. I worked the next day (in sales) and it needed to be fixed ASAP. This is one of the only places I found that was open on a Sunday and could help me fix the situation. At first, everything seemed fine and normal. I have dental insurance through my work so I already had an idea of what I might be paying as a copay. I let the front desk lady know what insurance I had and she confirmed on the amount of coverage I had. Now here is where things get interesting and brought up huge red flags. She takes me back, attempts xrays (standard procedure I guess?) and the doc comes in. Right away he starts going on and on about how I need a root canal and some other dental work done. Weird because I had gone to my actual dentist a month prior and he had written me off with a clean bill of health. Everything was normal. This dentist implied that I had pain on my upper right side (I don't) and when I told him I had in fact no pain and went to my dentist recently and just wanted this tooth fixed his attitude shifted and became irritated with me. Whatever...so then he leaves for a bit, the receptionist lady comes back and shows me my bill. By the way...this is the first time I have EVER paid for any dentistry work done before and not after my visit. Any way...you can imagine my surprise when she told me my total was $100 more than what my normal copay is. I asked her why and she told me she couldn't get ahold of my insurance so they were charging this 'just in case' and if my insurance got back to her and it was lower they would credit back the remaining money to my account. That didn't sit right with me so I declined and told her I would patiently wait until she got a hold of my insurance. Low and behold she comes back 15 mins later and confirms my copay to be what I thought it was. Mind you, it took another hour for the dentist to come back in to see me. This office space is very small (and rather cluttered I might add) so you can basically hear everything that goes on. During this time, I heard a woman come in who seemed quite friendly with the dentist. She went on and on about how grateful she was that the dentist could see her in a moments notice. Apparently a cap or something had fallen off? Anyways, he fixed whatever problem she had while I was in the next room over, just waiting. Even though she didn't have an appointment. Even though I was there first!! By the time I left that place I was there for three hours!!! The actual work he performed was rough. It was painful and he didn't seem to care at all. My tooth is now fixed for which I am grateful but I will NEVER go back there again. Bottom line, if you have other options please reconsider going to this place. Check their fees before going on the chair, you will be charged exhorbitant amounts for procedures either not done or that should be minimal. I had a protruding tooth in the front so Dr Rutley shaved it and left it as is The whole thing took 2 mns.. it turned yellow as a result. I was charged $1000 for that and when I told them it was not finished the staff dismissed me and was really rude particularly that red haired lady at the desk.. I found another dentist much better who actually finished the work, placed a white compound and told me it should never be done that way anyway. Dr. Rutley has been sued by many patients for malpractice. He regularly uses the courts as a method to extract exhorbinate fees out of people seeking relief. I am sure there are a lot of happy customers. But there are even more unhappy customers. Dr. Rutley's chair side manner is the worst I have ever seen. He does in fact pack as many appointments on top of each other as he can and he will leave you in your seat to let the novacaine work a lot longer than reasonable. I am not bitter at Dr. Rutley. I commend his greed and the fact that he is a 24 hour dentist. But the work he did for me was horrible, and all had to be redone. It is what it is, I live and learn to pass along advice to lookup your dentist on the county court records and read some of the complaints against him there. Go to him if your in pain, seek your relief but have the finish work done by someone who isn't trying to cram his entire office full of patients and leave you waiting. Real people have been injured by this dentist and it's okay because he works hard to manipulate the system to his advantage when he can. Keep the money Dr. Rutley. Enjoy it. Sooner or later your going to really screw up someone's mouth and they will take away your license to practice dentistry. Is he a dentist, yep. Would he be beat suited to perform dentistry in the 1700's yes. Because that's how he is going to triage you, in order to fleece as much cash out of you as possible. Go see Dr. Rutley, experience what a lot of people have and I did. Yelling at his staff chairside, jumping from patient to patient and leaving you waiting, sloppy work when it suits him. Dr. Mark Rutley is the most brilliant and wonderful dentist I have ever been to in my life! I live in New York and I was in San Diego on a business trip in a lot of pain when I landed on a Sunday and he took me in the afternoon on an emergency visit. As it turned out I thought it was just a cavity instead it was two cavities, two crowns, and three teeth restorations that needed to be done to get me back in shape without hurting as much as I have been for such a long time!!! Rutley guy is dishonest, cruel and abusive. I decided to get a second opinion on his $40,000 "TREATMENT PLAN" for me. Guess what... he won't give me my xRays or information about three implants that he put in. Without this information I can't get a second opinion or continue the treatment in any other place. For three months he is ignoring my requests for my medical file I have a legal right to. I filed an official complaint with California Dental Board, and still have to go to court to get my file. I wish I could give less than a one star rating for this place. I was a patient of Dr. Rutley, but opted to stop going there as I was humiliated and disrespected by his office manager Candice. She has no morals and respect toward people. They were trying to charge me upfront without billing my two insurances that I have, which is a red flag for potential insurance fraud. It took me about 3 months to get all what they had billed my insurance and me. I noticed that they had over billed me and now they are giving me the run around with this matter, as I am trying to get my money back for the over charges for my services. I don't recommend this place unless you want to get over charged for the services they render to you. Very unprofessional office manager (Candice) who will never return calls, etc. I see other reviews like mine and worst. I gave them various opportunities to do the right thing and have ignored them. I've been going to Dr. Rutley for at least 5 years now. When I initially came to him a crown had come loose from my tooth and my root canal in that tooth was apparently done wrong. At that time I requested a dental implant. He argued that I still had good tooth, so he advised me to repair the root canal. He stated that as long as I continued to go to him as a dentist he guaranteed his work. Of course less than 2 years later that root canal went bad. He then did what he called "heroic dentistry" and I underwent another procedure to prolong the tooth. That failed in about a year. After thousands of dollars, he recommended pulling the tooth and getting an implant. I reminded him that I had asked for this when I initially came to him. His words, "hindsight is 20/20". I went ahead and paid for the extraction and bone graft. 6 months later went to get the bone density scan. Dr rutley requires a consultation before surgically placing the implant. When I walked in they slapped me with a bill for $2300. I live 30 min away, and was not expecting this bill, nor had I been warned about it. I assumed I would pay when I got the procedure. It would have been different had they told me ahead of time. The one front office lady (older woman with short red hair) is extremely rude- both in person and on the phone. The others are courteous and professional. Dr Rutley's bedside manner is gruff and you are often waiting almost an hour in the waiting room. Besides the decent front office staff, the other good thing about his practice are the dental hygienists. They are thorough and professional. The only reason I didn't give this place 1 star. Called Dr Rutley as I needed an emergency dentist for what I thought was going to be a root canal. He was able to see me at 8am on Saturday ( I called at 7am on Saturday!). He did not think that I needed a root canal and prescribed none invasive treatment which has worked perfectly!! I appreciate that he explains everything from start to finish and did not believe in jumping in to perform an expensive procedure if it was not necessary. I was extremely happy with the service I was provided. Dr. Rutley even called later that evening to see if I was OK. Dentistry of Del Mar now has my business. Brilliant service!! read more

Dentist was not wearing a mask, gloves, shield or disposable scrubs. When questioned his response was "I am reviewing wax-ups and discussing them with you, I do not need a mask and gloves". He was less than 2 feet away from me. He was irate. He then opened a drawer which was empty. He had to ask his assistant to bring him a mask as his mask supply drawer was empty. No masks in patient room #1. He thereafter used a mask and gloves. In the midst of my appointment he left the room and went to see another patient who had a teeth cleaning. Whilst waiting for him to return I needed the restroom and went down the corridor and saw him sitting right behind a patient with no mask covering his face. He returned to my room #1 and I requested he put a disposable scrub on as he was with another patient and I do not want to be exposed. He blatantly refused. He coughs and his basic mask, no shield and using the same scrubs patient to patient and for lengthy periods of time exposes everyone to risk of contamination and being inflicted with COVID-19 and other infectious illnesses. Dental office is supposed to be a safe place as safe as can be. The bathroom was not sanitary. The patient rooms are not clean or sanitary. The equipment has residue on and dust. The waiting room is not clean or sanitary. The most concerning is the high risk of exposure due to the dentist refusing to adhere to and take every precaution and measure to keep his patients safe. read more

Didn't even make it into the office. On two separate occasions I tried to get an emergency root canal done. The doctor was the one we spoke with because it was the weekend and he didn't have his full staff. He argued with us over our insurance. He kept saying our insurance would only cover 80% of root canals without actually verifying our it. My insurance covers 100%. I even printed the explination of benefits showing the 100% coverage as well as the amount I still had available. When my husband called the answering service to explain that we would not be going if the dentist demanded we pay 20%. They said they would pass the message along. We never received a call back until 1 hour after our scheduled appointment. The doctor said he received no message. My husband explained our insurance yet again and the doctor simply told him "Good luck with that" and then hung up. I am writing this review to warn others. I don't know what he would have done if we paid the 20% and my insurance paid him 100%. It seems shady and I don't want others to be swindled. He obviously does not know about every insurance plan as he was very wrong about mine. Went to a different endodontist and yes, my root canal was 100% covered by insurance. read more

Let me begin by saying that I have written two Yelp reviews in my life so one could assume I am either happily pleased or don't use Yelp a lot. They are both true. HOWEVER, I am forced to say something in this instance because I do not want anyone going through what I went through and from the looks of the other reviews it appears this is necessary. I went to Dr. Rutley in December for a simple cleaning. I walked out with a $5,200 proposal of things that needed to be fixed. This is fine, I am OK with paying if necessary. However, I am not OK with someone assuming this is going to be done. It was not much of a choice, but a "Your next appointment is...and you will be doing...". Not very professional. The receptionist and dental hygienists are very nice. Dr. Rutley is not. He is rude to his employees and actually yelled at one while I was in the room. I am not sure why they work there, but that is not my problem. He also makes you wait FOREVER. If you have a 45 minute appointment, you will be there for 1.5 hours because he books so many people back to back that he doesn't have the time, or because he is sitting in the hallway talking to the receptionist about his new botox clinic. I literally sat in the dental chair for 25 minutes for a simple quick check up while he talking in the hallway. I stood up, took the bib off and walked out and never went back...this is why. I had a crown done a few weeks before I went on vacation. It was the most painful experience ever. It was the first crown I have had done, so I thought this was normal. It is NOT. I realized this after switching to another dentist and having one done this morning. The crown put on by Dr. Rutley does not fit and is uncomfortable. My new dentist had to remove a bunch of cement left by him on the crown and other fillings he had done. My mouth was aggravated, red and sore due to this. I wish I had nothing more to say, but alas, I do. While on vacation, I was in the most pain I have ever been in (not exaggerating...and I have broken a knee, gotten stitches, had lots of mouth work done, etc...). I had to go to another dentist and have her adjust the crown. This partially worked, but had to take vicodin because of the pain. This made me sleepy and sick, essentially ruining my vacation. When I returned to tell him of this matter, I was told it is because I grind my teeth at night. I do this. I am aware. However, this has nothing to do with it. It is because the crown did not fit, has a hole in it and was not properly done. I am having it replaced when I can afford to. Ah, money, I prepaid (NEVER DO THIS) for another crown and filling before I went through this experience. When I called to have it refunded, I was informed I needed to talk to their account person. Three days went by and no call. I called again. I finally spoke with her. I was informed I would have the $1392 check in 2-3 weeks. 2 weeks went by, nothing. 3 weeks went by, nothing. I called. I was informed that I would get a call back...nope. 4 weeks, nothing. 5.5 weeks later and many phone calls later, I finally received the check. I contemplated not writing this until I went to my new dentist (he's amazing) and realized how a good dentist treats you. I don't wait for the dentist to see me. I don't sit in the dental chair for 30 minutes to "let the novocaine work"...haha ridiculous excuse. When I show up for my appointment, the dentist is there or the hygienist to greet me. NO WAITING...try the concept, Dr. Rutley. I would NOT recommend him AT ALL. read more

I think Dr. Rutley a responsive dentist who wants to build his practice. However, I feel his dental skills are lacking. Here are the facts: 1. Went to have a crown put on broken tooth. Got 2 crowns. Neither fit properly. Both need to be replaced. 2. One crown required a root canal. Dr. Rutley and his dental assistant got in a verbal fight in the middle of the proceedure. The root canal has since gone bad and the tooth now needs to be extracted. 3. Dr. Rutley advised to have all fillings replaced and reconstructive work done on several additional teeth. I sought second opinions from 2 other dentists -- both disagreed with Dr. Rutley. 4. Dr. Rutley was very critical of the dental work that had been done by other dentists. I felt that he was trying to scare me into more dental work than is necessary. 5. Dr. Rutley's fees are higher than other dentists in the area. This is not a problem if the service is superior -- it is not. 6. His office scheduled me for an appointment that I never made nor did I agree to coming in for a visit. I feel this was inappropriate. 7. There was never a follow-up call to see if I was happy with the dental work. Surprising considering how much it cost. read more

He's quick and efficient, not a whole lot of useless chatter or waiting around, because when you go to the dentist, you don't want to hang around. If you're like me, once you're there, you want to get the hell out. I had a botch root canal crown job when I moved here from Texas and was incredible pain for quite some time. After getting nowhere with a dentist in Mira Mesa, who's since closed his practice, I found myself in horrible pain unable to sleep through the night. I googled and emailed Dr. Rutley's office. Within the hour, I got a response and Dr. Rutley planned to meet me bright and early within that time, which happened to be very early on a Sunday. He was fantastic and I walked away feeling no pain for the first time in over a month. I go there now for my cleanings and anything else I need. Dr. Rutley saw me on short notice after a broken tooth threatened to keep me from a business trip. He got me on antibiotics and light painkillers until we were able to schedule the extraction. An impacted wisdom tooth that had broken and become infected was out in less than an hour with minimal pain and discomfort. read more

I wanted to review the good Dr. Rutley right away. My wife had a bad crown from another dentist which led to an abcess. It started getting bad on Friday and by Sunday she was in a lot of pain. Dr. Rutley came in on Sunday on an emergency basis and spent almost 3 hours doing an emergency root canal and saving her tooth (yes, on Sunday!). His fee was reasonable and he insisted on doing a lot of follow up to make sure everything was done properly. He does very good work, but is not gentle, so be forewarned! He also does try and sell you a whole package of dental work though ($$$$) and some of it I found out later was an definite oversell so a second opinion is in order. Overall a good dentist, but I graded a 4 based on the above. read more

Dr. Mark Rutley is an excellent general dentist. He has truly listened to all of my concerns and is both thorough and gentle. I have veneers and few offices have been experienced in how to clean and take care of them properly. I've had cleanings, fillings and a root canal. I knew I needed a root canal based on an x-ray taken by my orthodontist at the time, which is actually how I was referred to Dr. Rutley in the first place. I was scared but he told me it would be a 'piece of cake' and amazingly, it was! I've had him as my dentist ever since. read more

Bad experience... The receptionist wasn't helpful and not friendly at all. My friend asked me to come with her because she is afraid of dentist and they didn't allow me to stay with her. The doctor was attending different customer and screaming inside some directions for the receptionist. For sure you can find a better clinic close by. Dr. You should tell your patient and me when We arrived that I wasn't allow to stay with her, instead of making me stay longer saying that after the x-ray I was allow to get in. Second, you as a service provider should make sure that anyone that is walking through your clinic would receive a good customer service. Doesn't matter if it is a patient or not. I'm just expressing the experience that I had. I'm sorry but bad reviews are good somehow to improve your service and quality. read more
